MPx220 Stay connected to internet

I've had my phone for a couple weeks now, and I'm really frustrated with the way the damn thing conencts to the internet. In some java apps that use the internet connection, they can't trigger the phone to connect. How can I force the phone to stay connected without having to install a 3rd party app?
