Well I've seen that there is a lot of doubts in this matter. I'm a little bit far of being a master but I have learned some (sometimes with a bad experience) and I want to share It with you.
First of all you have to know that a Flex is the version of software that makes your phone run (like Win XP, Win 2000, etc on a PC). Flex version is a group of features in that software, that make your phone the way it is and also identifies itself as one of a particular group (model).
Let's make an example R472_G_08.18.34R_PDS002_LP0039_DRM0001_JPJAVA_G_08 _R47_06_00_05R_SE6685AXXL10E9_BOOT0820_1FF (V547-551 fullflash file)
This is a fullflash file. It has a flash (R472_G08.18.34R) PDS, Languague pack, Java, Flex (SE6685AXXXL10E9) and Boot Loader you can recognize it because all of them has an usual FF ending. This file erases all the information inside your phone and installs a new version.
You could have only Flex files, Langpack files or any of the other components by itself. That are useful when you only need to modify certain parameters.
You need also a bit of software to do all this modifications.
Basically:
Motorola Mobile Phone Tools (Using 4.04)
Motorola Phone Support Tool PST (Using 7.2.3)
Multiflashflex Tool included in PST
P2K Drivers (Using v 2.9.0.0)
Motokit 1.06 or P2K file manager (Personally I prefer Motokit)
LeaderGl Flex Editor 10.0 (When you want to take the risk of modify your flex)
There is a link where you can find the most of this software.
Remember:
1. Always to read a bit about your phone before doing anything. Not all phones are the same for Example V600 is a TRIPLETS based phone and V600i uses the R376 series (talking of software) but they look the same when you have them in your hand. Flashing a phone with a wrong software could kill it forever.
2. Always make a backup.
3. Make sure that the file you are using is not locked to any carrier unless your phone is locked to a carrier and that is the carrier you are using (Ex: Cingular software to a Cingular locked phone no problem). If you use the wrong file your phone will be locked.
Once you have installed the software you will need to connect an USB cable, you can get it from ebay, amazon, a dealer near you, etc. They are pretty easy to find (SKN6311B (I like this a lot because has a slot to plug a charger so you will never will get your battery dead)is motorola OEM for almost all phones, V3 uses a mini USB like the one in digital cameras you could even use the one of yours)
These are the steps to fullflash almost any V series phone.
1. Make a backup of all your stuff wit Mobile Phone Tools (ringtones, photos, videos, phonebook, etc.) everything will be lost during the procedure.
2. Make sure your battery is fully charged, if not charge it first. If you run out of batt doing the flash please say goodbye to your phone.
3. Sometimes is useful to take out the sim card specially when you have it locked. Some phones don't recognize the keypad after flashing and you won't be able to unlock it. (don't worry that thing can be fixed)
4. Turn the phone on and conect it to the cable.
5. Connect the cable to PC and run PST. The program will recognize the phone and will install it. During this process It will ask for the P2K drivers, browse for them and let the program install it.
6. When the phone is correctly installed you will see in the left inferior corner Device: P2K Motorola Port: USB
7. Browse for the fullflash file, select it.
8. Double click over P2K Motorola and the program will tell you "Changing the device into flash mode"
9. The screen in your phone will turn black and then a text like this will appear: Boot Loader X.XX SW version XXXXXXXXX Battery OK USB Ok to transfer. Click on the flash button and follow instructions. Is difficult to get lost. (It lasts about 4-5 min)
10. Don't disconnect your phone during this time.
11. When It finishes your phone will turn off, and PST will ask for flashing another phone?
12. After this your phone is ready to use, but if there is something that you would like to modify, like the langpack or a different flex or anything, this is the time.
13. Open Multiflashflex tool and close PST and use it to change the langpack, do the reflash or install the new flex. The procedure is similar. The major difference is that here the phone will appear already connected and identified you will not have to double click on the device to activate it will change automatically to flash mode when you start the procedure.
14. Motokit is a nice program where you could modify the text in the outer screen, the text when GPRS is active, Browse for your phone files and a lot more. If you want to do something like that this is the time also. If not you're done.
15. Re insert SIM turn it on and begin to personalise it and reload it with your stuff.
I hope this steps could help some people. If someone wants to add or correct something please do It.
Good Luck to all of you.

Nope, I like it, I think is very useful reading this before starting flashing your phone.
BTW: If have a E1000, but i don't know, what is with 32bit and 64 bit versions, and what i should use R26LD Flex, U_80.xx.xxx flex or U_83.xx.xxx flex? And the flash also R26LD_XXXXX or E1000_XXXXX? Thanx in advance, if you could help me i'll be verry happy.
