Flashing a V550 with the R376_G_0E.67.02R Monster Pack?

I just recently purchased a V635 and I've been learning how to flash it now over the last 2 weeks, I've already flashed it 4 times now using RSD Lite 1.9.1 and have had lots of success taking it up to the YAGER 90R Monster Pack, I suffered from the reverse flip during the first flash but I did a reflash and fixed that problem, continued to flash it again beyond 6FR Monster Pack experiencing the problem with using P2KMan to remove ringtones and causing the Ring Styles menu to not allow access. That is why I did the 90R flash which resolved that problem, even been using various programs to learn how to do seem edits like for changing YAGER's modification with the 90R so I could have the 3GP video option back instead of having to record in MP4 video format (which I don't like much and have had no end problems trying to render MP4 videos on the PC). So far things have gone great, just been using Motokit to change the volumes for the phone as the YAGER modification was way too loud when I flashed it with the 90R MP.

The next thing I want to try is to flash my friend's phone which is a Vodaphone V550. I don't see any reason in him keeping his branded menus etc.. which is why I want to try and flash it to see what it will be like. I've read around the net and from what I can gather it tells me that I need to use the R376_G_0E.67.02R Monster Pack which should change his V550 into a V620. Only question really is what exactly will this update do to my friend's phone? I've seen on some other threads that people are complaining about the quality of the camera (I gather they're talking about for photographs only) to be suffering a loss in quality after the flash is applied. I also read somewhere that people have taken a V550 and flashed it with the 02R update and it's made a mess of their java games. The big question is will this happen to me? Will I experience any reverse flip during this firmware update and also what is it gonna be like after I've completed the flash? Is there much point in doing this or should I just leave his phone alone. What about the battery life, will it make it better with a flash and will it make the menus faster like it did with my V635?

If anybody here knows anything much about what I might be getting myself into here with my friend's phone I would be very grateful if you could share your knowledge with me, maybe somebody can suggest some more positive results about going ahead with this idea. The last thing I want to do is damage my friend's phone and end up with him having to buy another one just cause I did something I shouldn't have done. I'm using the USB cable I got with my V635 to possibly flash his phone which I gather is the same for both the V550 and the V635, also I'm gonna install the Mobile Phone Tools v3.0 which I have on a disc for the V550 which goes by the name of PC620. I've already tryed the same drivers I used for the USB modem for my V635 but they didn't work for the V550 so I'm hoping that it'll be okay with the PC620 disc..

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

I was hoping that somebody might be able to reply to my post before tonight as my friend will be coming round with his phone and I might be tempted to flash it. If anybody knows anything about V550 firmware then please let me know ASAP. Thanx.

You have to imagine the purpose of this thread, which is to post problems and solutions.

Just because 1 or 2 people experience problems with a perticular flash doesn't mean that all people will experience this problem. Most likely the flashing process went wrong or they seem edited something to mess up the phone.

Basically the Firmware is the hardware side which will provide battery gain, signal gain, video performance gain, etc. It could also hither performance, but usually not.

The flex is the software which is comprised of "seems" and can be edited via specific software. This allows menu setup, additional features made accessible, etc.

I would just take it one step at a time. Make sure you use "Flash Backup" on his phone that way you have a step back if anything should go wrong. Make a full backup, and test it. Nothing is worse then thinking you have a fail-safe, and finding out you don't.

Once you find you have a successful backup then i would just go crazy with it. I do recall, I think, that the V500 series was a tad picky with the software that was installed because it had special features that the other phones didn't have. So if you flash to a V620 you might not have the extra features that make the phone special.

Check out the firmware number and make sure the first half are at least the same. This will tell you that the flash was intended for your model, and that the ending half is a newer update. It is read in HEX and is 2 digits and ends with an R usually.

6FR = 6(15)R
8BR = 8(11)R
etc.

Thanks for your reply. I did go ahead and flash his phone last night without doing a backup of his original vodafone firmware too and it seemed to work pretty well. I was a bit worried because I'd never flashed a V550 before but it went ok and there didn't seem to be any problems. I had to make a few changes afterwards like do a seem edit and put some of his files back on his phone again but everything went well so I was glad.

The only thing that maybe was affected was perhaps the camera wasn't very good still, dunno if it was like that before really but it wasn't all that great neither was the video camera, a bit jumpy but I said to him that he should get a phone with a better camera like the V635.

There wasn't any problems with the Java games either, they were fine, all in all I was pretty pleased with the result and the menus were much better than before, more responsive than anything.
