I use the iPaq 6515 and am trying to get the downloads for the GPS tracking system to show customers how its done. I've searched and found things for TomTom's updates for a new software but haven't found anything to buy or download maps to truely use it on the phone. Anyone have a idea on what site i can pick up the stuff to get it going?

Also if anyone knows if this runs off RF or just the PDA portion would be helpful for customer information. Like if im not in GSM network I want it to still work if I'm off network.

Try iGuidance. I use it on my iPaq 3715 along with a Bluetooth GPS receiver.

Also check this.

Look in your manual, there's a url to go to for the GPS software. There will be a special link on there to recieve a free copy of MS Pocket Streets for use with the GPS. I bought this device last week, and had this all set up. It was very cool.

ok, well I downloaded that long ago, yet when i click on Pocket Streets on my programs list, i get a lot of nothing! It opens up and has a window that shows:

Folder: All Folders (with a drop box with nothing else in it)
Type: Pocket Streets Maps(*.mps) nothing else in the drop box

then a spot on the bottom that has like.. name: folder: date: and so forth.

I cant seem to find anything else with this on how to view squat!! Its highly annoying and don't find any other place in the PDA to go further in this. Book doesnt navigate you much past how to get a version of the pocket streets.

Any further info you can spin would be helpful.

Microsoft Streets is very basic, oh you have to go and download the maps so you can open one up. Go with MAPOPOLIS instead it is more productive with GPS, love the voice prompts and MAPPACKS. You will awe your customers more with MAPOPOLIS as you can show them the things they can do and enjoy using the GPS feature on the device. The GPS is what mainly sold me and GSM doesn't hurt either as I travel a lot. Now I have a 128/128 upgrade instead of the 64/64 MB and wifi SDIO SD card with a 1GB Mini-SD card installed. GPS is a separate system from GSM. GPS connects to the many GPS satellites to get a fix not GSM. Your GPS receiver must acquire at least 3 of the 29 GPS satellites to get an acurate fix. Mine max out at about 9-10 satellite picked up at one time.

still getting nowhere.. i went to Mapopolis and saw wehre i could download a map. I tried the trial one just to get a glimps, yet when i put it in my PDA i open the file and get a error stating i must run the application first. I cant find a way to run the application. What the heck am i doing wrong?

Ok so i'm gettin a bit further for once... still messing with it, but i've got milwaukee's map up at least!

I haven't tried Mapopolis, but I've used MS Pocket Streets and it is a joke compared to iGuidance.

Pocket Streets cannot calculate routes much less give turn-by-turn voice directions. It is more of an atlas with POI and GPS capabilities displaying your current location. It is an awesome backup program. You can use it in conjunction with MS Streets and Trips to generate maps for use on your PPC, but the maps are limited by distance.

In contrast, with iGuidance, you get route calculation, turn-by-turn voice guidance, and you can load as many maps as your memory card can hold. You can generate maps by City or by State. On my memory card I have 6 Northeastern states' maps taking up just 225MB.

P.S. Did you check out that link I posted previously? It's an article that discusses the 6515's AGPS feature. They describe how it is used to assist in the TTFF without requiring more power for the GPS hardware.

Can the 6515 be used like a regular PDA without a SIM card inserted? I thought about picking one up just to avoid having to carry around a separate GPS device, but the amount of onboard memory kept me away.

I opened up the link and read a bit, but kept looking for a download program. You can use the 6515 without the sim, but I havent tried to see if GPS works without the network. My guess is that it will but just havent tried. I'm still in the process of tryin to get COM1 to pull some type of feed from a satelite. I was in my house but i think i need to be more outside or in the car. Havent looked today as of yet but i will momentarily. Thanks for the tips on that iGuidance. What type of cost was there in that program? Pretty much I'm going to get whatever system works and looks the best so i can demo it to customers if need be. Work will reimburse me so its not a huge deal as long as its not terribly expensive.

Isn't the 6515 independant GPS device?? If so, I cant seem to locate a satelite. Com1 keeps stating its "checking COM1" with no results. My store has 4 HUGE windows and im right next to one.

IGuidance is not supported for your phone do not buy it. Just use mapopolis.
Go this this forum they specialize with the 6515 http://mobilitytoday.com/.

Hey I'm having the same problem trying to locate the GPS satelite on my IPAQ, can you tell me how you got it to work?

Thanks.

Posted by: CingularEmploye

sure, i got it to work now. You put on some type of application for GPS right? If not try Mapopolis for a demo map or something. Once you get some type of software you can see GPS on the phone. Change port to Com7 and hit search. YOu should be able to see satelites at that time. It will take a few moments to get a lock on ya but it works pretty good.

I had one of the first hw6515's to hit the store. I had already done my research on GPS software. Go to www.pharosgps.com, and download their Ostia software. Once you have done this, you download their "mapfinder" software to your PC. When you install the software to your hw6515, it will configure the com ports, and enable your GPS function for you, just follow the prompts. You must then download the maps using the "mapfinder" application. You can download DETAILED street maps for ALL 50 states, but you can only download 3 maps per day (don't know why). I am in outside sales and I use this software EVERYDAY. It is flawless, and you can even incorperate up to the minute traffic info provided by Pharos, for planning the best route.
