8940 faceplate removal?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hey all, I just got an 8940 for myself and my lady. Since our phones are identical i decided to buy a faceplate for mine to make it a little easier to spot. Has anyone actually changed a faceplate on this model yet or know where i can get a quick tutorial on the appropriate way to do it? I'd hate to only have this thing for a few weeks and break it. I did read that i might need a philips head but i can't find any other directions on how to get it open. Any help would be...helpful.

thanks,

Plurge

I figured it out last night...here goes.
First, wash your hands, you don't want to gt anything messy.
flip open the phone, just above the screen are two screw covers, one to the top left and one to the top right. you will notice a little hole on the bottom portion of the covers. You will need to gently lift up these covers by prying under the squares. Once those are up, you will need to remove the one under the screen. This one is a mirrored finish bar. Use the same technique to take this one out.
Once the screw covers are removed, then you can remove the screws. Don't improvise, the best way is to get a small philips head...anything else could strip the screw. Now that all four screws are out you can lift the old face plate off and put on the new one. Screw in the four screws, put the screw covers back on and your ready to go.
The process was no nearly as hard as I had originally thought, hope this is helpful.

Like I replied to you on cellphonehacks, using an exacto knife or razor to pry/leverage the cover off, does the least damage.

thanks again for the info. Hope I didn't plagiarize you in any way. I actaully did it with the end of a fingernail file on a swiss army knife. It didn't leave any marks fortunately. Cheers.

BTW, that just voided your warrenty..

I think that goes without saying, if there are telltale signs of the removal.

just making sure HE knew that..lol. yeah...if your phone does have some problems later one, just put the old faceplate on and they shouldnt notice

I wasn't to bothered with the warranty part. I've still got all the old phones that i can use if this one kinks out. But, fortunately, I've got a spare faceplate in the event that the girlfriend scratches up hers.

The faceplate being scrtatched up wouldn't necessarily void the warranty, but the signs that it had been removed (screwcaps missing, or looking as it they've been removed) would.

when I got my second 8910 (first one had gotten a bath with me... I was txting, and it slipped... long story...) it didn't come with the little rubbers over the screws... wasn't thrilled about that, but hey... it was a free replacement...

I can almost guarantee it was a refurbished handset. That seems to be common.

no, actually, it wasn't a refurb... since I'm friends with the techs, when I get a new phone, it's a NEW phone... lol... they grab a new box, and just swap handsets, i keep my battery, and get a new handset, and my busted one goes in the box, and they send it back to get refurbed... it pays to have friends in high places, lol

If it was new, it should have the bumpers, shouldn't it?

I hope they didn't trick you, or that they were using retail boxed refurbs.
