anyone know of any motorola ptt phones coming to cingular soon? i wanna get the ptt but dont like the phones they have now i like the look of the nextel motorolas so im wondering if cingular will be getting anything like that in the near future.

Posted by: brody4

if you like the look of nextels get the i930 and unlock it... throw your sim in and pretend you have ptt.

Will the i930 work on the Cing PTT network if it is unlocked? Very nice phone!

no you wont be able to use the PTT on cingular. its iden technology which is totally different. you would only be able to use it for voice calls.

no you cannot use the i930 at all on the cingular network. cingular is GSM, nextel is iDen, very different technologies

The i930 does have a GSM radio in it as well as iDEN. However the i930 operates on foreing GSM frequencies only (900 and 1800)

Okay I should know better than this since I've been on this board for over a year, but I am now curious... Could I get a Motorola i830 to work? If you asked me before I read this thread, I would have told you no, but now I wonder if it's possible...

back on topic here, i have seen some info about a moto ptt coming in the next few months, i believe march is what it said as the preliminary timeframe. it was a variant of the v300 series, cant remember the codename, but there is one coming from moto, so time will tell

if moto wanted to get on the kodiak ( cingulars ptt ) bandwagon, i think they would need a partnership with kodiak first then start looking for phones to put it in.

Posted by: tendura

Our Motorola rep told us that there would be a ruggedized moto for cingular ptt eventually. When? I have no idea.

Posted by: bklynkid82

There is a moto v400p with ptt that have been out since v400 came out it was just never popular in US because no carrier was offering the ptt service. You can get specs on it here:

If its not KODIAK Ptt, I don't think its going to work on Cingular Ptt. iDEN and Kodiak are different standards.

all i know is that the roadmap ive seen for future production shows a moto ptt variant of the v300 series. so if moto and kodiak r in need of some sort of partnership, i would assume seeing it on the production list would imply that is in the works

iden wont work with cingulars PTT, below are the upcoming ptt phones

Z520a W/PTT
V361 W/PTT

Is this thread a joke? NEXTEL PHONES DONT WORK ON CINGULAR. Now yes the i930 has GSM roaming but I am pretty sure that this only means ROAMING. Meaning you would need to have a nextel sim in there with nextel service. And Brody, whats wrong with you? You laugh and say it like EVERY nextel phone can be used on cingular. Learn about cell phones. IDEN and GSM are very different. And NO MATTER WHAT... the PTT would NEVER work on cingulars network.

Hey celltechy, the device is an iden+gsm phone, as long as the device works on the appropriate bands there wouldn't be a problem using a sim card from any particular gsm provider.....such as Cingular. Just unlock the bad boy, insert your Cingular sim card and you're good. Even though there aren't a lot of places where Cingular uses 1900 only, *it can be done*. If not, use the thing on t-mobile, they're 1900 everywhere. So yea, brody is right...

*Kiko points at celltechy and goes OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO*
The irony in that name eh?

I didnt deny it would work. I said I am pretty sure that you would need a native sim card. I was wrong, I will admit that. I was unsure of the way nextels roaming works. I dont know if you would need a roaming agreement in place. That is the only phone that would work though.

Indeed, however oatmeal is your only choice as of now. And yea, the i930 is the *only* nextel phone with gsm bands.

I know that smart remark wasnt at me... cause dude Id hate to have to address the problem bostonian style

It was to everyone on this thread...nobody here has any intelligent information to offer and people need to quit speculating and wait until concrete info that can be proven is available before running their mouths about this that and nothing.

Posted by: tendura

I don't believe ANYTHING I hear, inside Cingular, or outside until I see it. That's just the way I roll. No speculation, no guessing.

Posted by: djfeeney

If you guys are done waffling on the i930 issue, I'd like to chime in as an i930 owner.

Mine is unlocked and I can put my Cingular or T-Mobile SIM into the phone and have excellent GSM voice service and GPRS data (Cingular only).

I have experience with this because in my business travels I spend one day a week in a non-Nextel service area. So, I went to the local Cingular store and procured a prepaid SIM for use that one day a week when I'm outside my home network. It is native that way and not roaming.

Bottom line... works like a champ. The DirectConnect (DC) or PTT will never work on the Cingular system because the actual PTT takes place on different freq than Nextel.

Don't suppose any of you know how to make the v3 PTT enabled do you?

Posted by: DWHECKLER

Motorola is now listed as a handset client on the Kodiak Networks site.

That is probably because there is a Motorola PTT handset in field testing.
