If you live in Japan, it can be useful... it's not for scanning barcode or text, but QR code (a square shaped code with square little dots instead of rectangular with bars)...

You can find these codes on magazines advertisement or internet, etc... and usually the code represent a URL of their website... so you don't have to type the address to your cellphone...

That's about it... oh yeah, and if you got nothing to do, it might be fun... for some people (not me though)... :P

Note: I'm not sure if the Euro version can scan the QR too...

The only decent use I've found for the barcode scanner is on this one Russian website that has barcodes you can scan that take you to links. It's much more efficient than entering a big long URL manually, and it's pretty cool to show your friends how you can aim your cell phone camera at your monitor and download a game seconds later!

Oh yea now i remember I read that on the mag. before.

Yep, a ton of Japanese magazines (almost all of them) use QR codes in their advertisements to take you to a product website of some sort. Or a lot of times, you see them on websites so that you can scan it, then bookmark it on your phone to look at it later.

Here's one for anyone who's wanting to test it out:

Remember to autofocus with the call button before you scan.. it helps a lot.

Can be helpful in corporate situations. Inventory etc...

It might be in emergency situation...
Otherwise a proper scanner would be faster... since the phone's one takes time to scan due to focusing...

Here they are.

I find the text scanner useful for scanning in business card numbers...you can then call the number directly without typing it in.

Indeed - you would never want to 'do' inventory with a phone! But if your company uses codes for inventory tagging etc - your phone will at least be able to read the codes in a pinch...

Isn't gonna blow your bill away?
I just think that it would be kinda troublesome to download it from a PC...
You scan it, then send the link from your phone to your PC and then download it...

Maybe links for games would be reasonable...

in hk i saw a special tv advertisement you can buy movie tickets, concert tickets online scan it into the phone and then use that as a ticket. i think same as transit tickets. and i think you could pay your parking meter with it ... pretty cool.

I think movie is a bit too much too games and URL is cool...maybe ringtones.

Isn't 'too much' entirely dictated by download speeds and cost? I know using GPRS/EDGE type speeds and cost it is fairly obvious that a movie would be too much...

Packets aren't slow and expensive all over the world...

Can you guys scan the QF code on your PC screen?
I'm using TFT 17 inch monitor, and I can't get my V902SH to scan the damn thing...
But, I'm pretty sure that if I print the codes out, it works...
Maybe it'll only work with LCDs screens?

I dunno, my momitor is pretty old with low refresh rates, but my 903SH can still scan 'em.. Takes a while though, and if you dont focus it doesnt read at all :/
