Motorola E815 Crashing

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So this problem started happening when I decided to get a TXT messaging plan so I could send lots of TXT's. It is not all the time, but maybe once or twice every two days, so maybe one out of every 50-70 TXT messages I send, both replies or new messages, when I first get to the screen where I can type in my message, the phone will freeze and reboot itself. Just recently, it has been doing a very odd sounding beep along with it when it recovers from the crash. It is a beep I have never heard before this, not low-battery or whatever. Anyways, I talked to a friend that works for Verizon and he said the V710 had this problem and is known, but he had never heard of this problem on the E815. I was wondering if anyone knows if this is a typical problem or if I should try to get a replacement phone. I have hacked the phone step-by-step to enable transfering to and from a Transflash card (Even though I dont have one) and to get it to work with MPT to transfer ringtones, but I didn't think that would be related to this problem.

I heard instances of this happening on the V710's, where a simply firmware update fixed it. However, he also lost all the original unrestricted Bluetooth features as well. It's unlikely for the E815 to have that problem, but I could be wrong. One thing I found with my V710 was it constantly reboots and shuts itself down. People said it was software related, but I personally found that the battery terminals were a bit corroded on both battery and phone itself, that causes a loose connection. Even though the phone was getting a solid 4.0-4.2vdc through the two terminals, unless it gets a solid thermostat signal from the battery, it screws with the internal charging system and sometimes causes voltage and current fluctuations, causing random reboots. You might sometimes even see it, when your phone displays "Unable to Charge". A easy solution is to clean the terminals with an eraser which rubs off all the grease and oxidation on the terminals. That alone fixed my freezing and reboot issues. Not saying this is a fix, but definitely something to look at.

When my phone dies, it basically freezes (the screen) and then goes like blank, then comes back without a background, says no service, loads the background, and then gets service again.

I had a similar problembut, I think mine was attributed to the Transflash. Every time I tried to access it, the phone would freeze. I bought a new card and haven't had a problem yet.....

I don't have a transflash card, just hacked the phone setting so I could transfer stuff if I did have one, I Was told that also helps with USB cable transfers.

i have not hacked my phone in anyway and my phone blacks out somewhat frequently as well...its rather annoying....

also sometimes if i leave it to charge overnight, i will wake up to my phone being frozen and have to turn it off and back on to get it working again (which means no wake up alarm)

I have had the same problems with text messaging too much. I think the best solution is to delete your inbox and outbox after every 5-10 messages

From Mark Venture's site: http://mark.cdmaforums.com/E815_Firmware.htm

8720_01.1E.00 (aka E815 01.1E.0R) current Verizon release version. While there have been NO "official" release notes as to what fixes are included, there are some informal lists and discussions available in the thread -> E815 01.1E.0R (8720_01.1E.00) firmware available...

3. Some people report problems with Bluetooth - headset disconnecting in a way that requires reboot of the phone to reconnect. Some people do not have this problem.
4. Alarm now functions when you have a missed call or text on the screen..
5. #777 DUN tethering requires a different hack (info can be found on Mark V's "How To" page)
6. Vibrate is significantly stronger
That's about it
There is no official documentation for what was actually changed.

I had 4 E815s within 3 months, and they all had the txt msg freezing problem. It's a common problem with that phone.

I have the same problem with my phone. I have tried all of the suggestions above and still have the same problem. I would like to add that it does not matter if the message was sent by another verizon user, an internet email address, or extension @vtext.com and @vzwpix.com. Could this be attributed to having a transflash card in the phone? I think a friend of mine who has the same phone doesn't have the transflash card but still has the crashing problem. A call to VerizonWireless customer service was no help ( not suprised). They claim not to be even aware of the issue. FYI I started a thread a while back... same type of replies....

ok, I wanted to let everyone know I believe there to be some undocumented update to the firmware on this phone. I went yesterday to my local verizon store and asked them to flash my UNALTERED phone and I noticed a few differences when it was done.

1. iTap dictionary had more words in it
2. startup screen now included some VZW (black and red) anamation
3. NO CRASHING on txt messages from any source to either domain (vtext.com or vzwpix.com) I have received over 100 messages since the flash and it has not crashed/reset yet.

I did have a problem with my address book when it was done, I had some custom catagories that were there prior to the flash. Any contacts that were in those catagories were somehow corrupt. I could not edit the entry. When I received a txt message from them it would display the number instead of the name. I had the VZW store backup my address book, do a master clear, restore my address book and everything has been fine since.

The S/W version was and still is 8720_01.1E.00
I have a e815.

I have my 5th E815 now, and this one too has the txt msg rebooting/freezing issue, but not nearly as often. Dropping a 1 gb Tf card in it and trying to format froze it up today.

I copied all the files and folders from my 512 card to the 1 gb and it seems to work. I guess this phone can't format the 1 gb cards.

My next phone is the LG 8300 which is sitting in the box in my desk drawer. It was free so when the E815 dies, I'll switch to that. I paid for this Moto, so I'm using it until it dies.

Mine's never done this until recently...within the past couple weeks...i'll get text all days and it will happen a few times here and there...REALLY annoying...same with my charger...whenever I use the in house wall charger...most times it will reboot my phone. If I use the one in the car...no problem...i guess I should try cleaning with the rubbing alcohol. I'm getting tired of the phone...my get a new one anyway.

Mine seems to turn itself on when charging. I shut it off, wait a few seconds for the screen to go black, plug it in and then it seems to start back up. UGH!
