Help! Can't delete ROM file from 2125 (Cingular Tune.wav)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm trying to load GoodLink on this device and there's not enough storage. I'd like to delete this file, but it won't let me! It keeps saying it's read-only/write-protected/in use.

I've changed it so that it is not the default ring tone, and I've tried to delete it from both my PC and directly from the phone.

Try changing the file properties from the File Manager. Use the File Manager on the phone, don't use the PC. Uncheck the read-only, hidden and system attributes and see if that lets you delete the file. It may not work for a file in ROM, but it's the best I can think of.

Thanks... I did try that, too - no dice.

Someone else answered this in 2125 thread. You can delete the one in the sounds folder but not the one in the windows folder. Also if you don't have enough memory......

Cingular ceased distribution of the 2125 for a period of time. Listed below is their reasoning. If any of you have had issues installing GoodLink...well, this is why. Either way, some of you who want their devices...well...JUST RIGHT, might want to look into the re-flashing process.

Overview:

Approximately 2,000 Cingular 2125 Smart phones were incorrectly flashed by HTC, the device manufacturer, resulting in a reduction of user-available memory by 3 MB. This shortfall resulted in installation issues for the GoodLink OTA installer, which needs approximately 13 MB to function.

To fix this issue, shipments of Cingular 2125s were halted as of December 22, 2005 to reflash existing inventory and prevent large-scale customer dissatisfaction due to malfunctioning units.

New Cingular 2125 units have been received from HTC and existing inventory has been reflashed, allowing Cingular to resume shipments of Cingular 2125s on January 6, 2006.

To determine user-available memory, please follow this procedure:

1. Go to Start - Settings.
2. Press 0, then 4.

The "Available Storage" should read 15.22 MB for a new device. If it reads 12.22MB, the units should be re-flashed.

The vast majority of users should have no issues with the firmware on the device. The firmware is the correct version and all applications, with the exception of the GoodLink enterprise email solution, should function normally.

GoodLink users will have an issue since GoodLink requires close to 13MB for initial installation. If the user does not intend to install GoodLink, he/she should be able to use the device without any changes.

By the way here is the link to the HTC Americas site. It has links for the manual, support and FAQs.

Oh yeah and the ROM

The ROM update on the HTC site did the trick to free up enough memory to install GoodLink.

It's curious, though - my phone technically already had the same version (1.8.42.14) as on the ROM update. But, it did free up 3-4Mb.

I still can only delete the <Cingular Tune.wav> file in the \Application Data directory, not the \Windows directory.

Even though the image version is the same on the update, there is a ROM change. And it fixes the memory problem.

I'm glad that fixed your memory problem. You can't delete cingular.wav in the windows folder.

veblen, generally there is no way to delete ROM or READ ONLY FILE.
That's why it is called READ ONLY.

Did doing the ROM update mess up any of the programs that you installed prior to the update? I would like to do the update to see if it frees up any memory for me, but don't want to risk goofing up what I've installed already. Thanks.

the ROM update wipes out everything and starts you over, so you'll have to re-install any programs you loaded.
