Choosing a Treo 650 Deal

I've noticed that the deals for phones tend to be much better with 3rd party retailers. I've been an AT&T/Cingular customer for 10 years, but they're unwilling to offer me any special deals on hardware or service. Given the customer acquisition cost, it makes you wonder! but I digress...

I'm interested in getting a Treo 650, and have found the best deal to be either a refurbished Treo through Cingular at $140 with a 2 year commitment, or a new one through Buy.com at $155 with a 2 year commitment to Cingular as well.

I'm wondering if there are any distinct advantages to buying directly from the provider? And, does anyone have any experience with buying from Buy.com?

Also, it appears that the Buy.com offer is for new customers -- would I need to cancel my current plan with Cingular and sign up for a new 2 year plan via Buy.com to qualify? Seems dumb, since I could just as well sign up with Verizon, transfer my number, and be a happy camper!

Thanks for the advice,
iFrank

I like to buy through the provider so that if something goes wrong, you only have to call one company instead of 2 or 3...

Also, I don't think it's as easy as cancelling and re-signing. Last time I checked, you would have to cancel for a minimum of 6 months to qualify as a new customer. So, if you have your eye on Verizon, maybe now is the time to go and get yourself a 700w.

Can you sign up for these deals if you're already a Cingular subscriber? I am -- but my contract has long ago terminated!

Have they fixed the problems with the Cingular branded 650s? I have heard horror stories about the phone locking up and having memory 'leaking' issues.....

Yeah, those were fixed with a firmware update a few months back.

Thanks - Think I'm gonna git it a try..I hear you have to buy software to use .wav and .mp3 ring tones but what the heck.
