My 6230b flashed to 5.50 unbranded w/ NETMONITOR!! thanks Evan/iunlock!

Hey guys!

I am back to using my ol' faithful, my Nokia 6230b until the w810i or the n80 comes out. The thing I missed most about my 6682 was celltrack and fieldtest. I remembered the days of Chippery9 when people were getting netmonitor on their 6230bs and other DCT4 Nokia phones. I talked to Evan @ iunlock, and he said that he figured out how to put Netmonitor on the 6230/6230b with 5.50 unbranded firmware!! I cheered with glee to say the least.

For those of you that don't know Netmonitor is, it's really cool tool for anyone who is into phones like we are. It lets you monitor the GSM network, particularly the network that you're connected to. You are able to read the current network you're logged onto, the frequency and chanels you're on, the neighboring chanels, and a bunch of other super-nerdy statistics.

For more information on netmonitor see these links:

toolhead's netmonitor FAQ: http://65.254.44.186/showthread.php?t=418257
netmonitor guide: http://www.techgsm.com/page/nokia-n...netmonitor.html
some more goodness: http://www.phones-direct.ro/uk_netmon.htm

As soon as I could, I got in my car and drove over to his shop and he flashed my phone. I now have netmonitor!!

If you guys want netmonitor on your 6230/6230b, go over to his site,

www.iunlock.com, go to the online shop and it's just a $10 extra for the 6230/b. Very worth it!

I'm sure Evan will have more netmonitor versions for more phones in the future.

here are some pics:

Here we see my 6230b connected to channel 139 and receiving -89 dB of signal. The "85" refers to 850mhz. There are more screens as well. For instance, some will tell me that i'm on 310-410, or cingular's network.

I am so jealous. Are you able to set it to which tower you want to connect to? Mac Ace told me that was possible with the 6230 net monitor....

Posted by: boston_errol

I used to do this on the 668x field test so i'm pretty sure it's possible with this 6230.

Posted by: The Mac Ace

yes it is possible 0113 is the code! get yours flashed macizcool

Posted by: macizcool

$40. is a lot for a broke college student. I had to justify paying $$$ to buy the phone in the first place.... I may have to wait on this one, but I am happy to know it's available...

Posted by: The Mac Ace

sell the e317 to pay for it or the 4020

Posted by: Chopz

Question for you boston. Can you access menu 01-20 in your version of netmonitor? The reason I'm asking is that there are two types out there. Fieldtest and Engineering version.

Posted by: The Mac Ace

what does 1-20 do?

Hah, I wanna keep the e317 for now... And I doubt anything I get for the 4020 will be enough to pay for anything.... Maybe a 6-pack

Thanks for the support, guys

I decided to do a little special on this service. It's now only $5 additional to have Net Monitor firmware

Posted by: The Mac Ace

evan, did you get the 8801 netmonitor yet?

Posted by: evan_silbert

Not yet, but I'm working on it. I'll be adding the Net Monitor option to several Nokias on the site in the coming days. I just did 6230 and 6230b first since it's such a popular phone and we flash them every day.

Sweeeeet, I just jacked mine into the charger to send you a full battery. I knew I put off upgrading to 5.50 for some reason...

edit: why is it when you need that small box the most, the only thing you can find is a box the size of a bathtub? sheesh.

Posted by: carsmovies

The latest firmware for the 6230b is actually 5.51 and not 5.50. Is netmon not available for version 5.51?

Posted by: evan_silbert

Not that I know of, at the moment.

Posted by: The Mac Ace

evan which version of netmonitor do you have? field test or engineering?

Posted by: evan_silbert

As I know, this is considered the Field Test version, but I'm waiting for Errol to report his results with the menu mentioned earlier in this thread. Unfortunately, I don't have a 6230b on hand at the moment.

Posted by: The Mac Ace

ok, could you get ahold of the engineering version?

Posted by: evan_silbert

This is the only version I have access to at the moment, but let's wait to hear if it has the menus you want activated.

I'll try to remember to bring my 6230 tomorrow and test it.

Posted by: The Mac Ace

thanks evan.

Posted by: boston_errol

"0120" returns "NO TEST 01-20"... is this the code you guys want me to try?

Posted by: The Mac Ace

yeah thats the right code. damn... see if you can get the engineering one evan

Posted by: evan_silbert

Thanks for testing that, Errol. As I suspect, it is Field Test.

He's not gonna be able to get the engineering one cause only Nokia employees (engineers) have access to it and unless an employee is somehow prepared to steal the firmware out it's not gonna happen.

don't challenge him

Posted by: evan_silbert

Guys... let's be nice

We just offer the Net Monitor (Field Test) firmware because people have asked for it and we will always try to have the firmwares people want and need with the fastest possible turnaround time!

Posted by: The Mac Ace

yeah please dont challenge him... my chippery9 ed could do that hehehe

Yep, that's the one I wanted you to test. For the average Joe the version that Evan is offering will certainly give you the details you need. It will show you what tower your phone is using whether it's an 850 or 1900 tower, what the signal strength of all the nearest towers in your neighbourhood are, if your call is encrypted, what voice codec your current call is using (AMR or EFR)....etc. The Engineering Mode as carsmovies pointed out is a flash for internal use only.

carsmovies: What's Bongo's current 6230b netmonitor with firmware version?

Posted by: The Mac Ace

its been so long since i had it-what did the 1-20 do again?

last i checked (just before xmas) Bongo's latest w/ netmonitor was 5.24 and Kevin said he didn't expect a newer version...

maybe if enough of us were interested it would be worth it for him to try to invest in the latest...but it is expensive for him as far as i know so it may take a lot of us willing to pay him for it...
i know i am...i would pay a lot more than 5 bucks especially if i can drive to Bongo instead of paying to send a phone to the USA and back, the risk of it being lost / damaged etc and the hassle of replacing / re-customizing etc if necessary (plus i prefer to use my favorite phone every day)

I don't even think that chippery9 had access to the engineering netmonitor. My 6230b (that I got from him) has field test.

Bongo could also put on V5.50 with fieldtest but a fyi, the one that's being used is not a firmware with the fieldtest built in but a firmware with a patch which i've been told isn't necessarily the best kind of firmware.

Hey everyone... funny how I find this thread an hour after I sent my phone to Evan. Ironic, huh? I knew people recommended iunlock.com, but I didn't know he was a regular on the forums!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting my phone back with netmonitor and finally being able to prove that t-mobile is lying about EDGE in my zipcode! (network traffic my butt... they don't want to admit that there is a mistake on their list of EDGE zipcodes!)

SHOUTOUT TO EVAN: You've got to come out to NY with a store (like we discussed... )

Wait, the "patched" firmware is what bongo is using, or what Evan is using?

The patched firmware is what Evan is using. Bongo is not advertising this firmware because it's a patched one.

Oh. What are the disadvantages of this flash?

More importantly, am I better off w/out it if its a problem? I don't NEED netmonitor, I just thought it'd be cool to see and test stuff.
If its going to be detrimental somehow to the performance of my phone in any way (stability, response, reception, etc...) then I'll want just a regular firmware!

Can anyone who's gotten this from Evan confirm anything?

There is no evidence that the firmware we use behaves differently than any other. Our customers who have had this firmware flashed to their phones have been very pleased as far and have not reported issues.

In essence, all Net Monitor capable Nokias have the firmware to display it. They are only told not to. Firmwares that are set to allow it from the beginning are no different from those that are changed later.

By the way, Mordy, my business partner is going you-know-where in a few weeks to spend a weekend there and check things out. It may be more probable than we thought before.

got it for the 8801 yet?

Posted by: evan_silbert

Hopefully soon

Posted by: The Mac Ace

hopefully with 3.80 too

Posted by: macizcool

So does anyone have the 5.50 version without the Net Monitor? I was just curious if that version allowed network select.... No one ever told me that network select would be enabled

Posted by: evan_silbert

For most people, uncustomized 5.50 without Net Monitor allows network select, even with a Cingular sim card.

Posted by: Dishe

Out of curiosity, what does network select allow you to do?
I'm assuming its something I can do even with the netmonitor enabled, right?

Posted by: boston_errol

you can enable it yourself with logo manager and some other software... its somewhere on hofo if you search.. either nokia forum or cingular phone forum.

it lets you search for available GSM networks and register onto them. it's especially usefull for cingular customers that live in markets that have not been integrated yet, or t-mobile customers who live in extended roaming areas and have access to additional GSM networks, etc.

Hey Evan.. I'm ready to send you my 6230b but have a couple questions, I purchaced some software (moontime, tells the phase of the moon) and it was delivered via mms. Will I loose that and all my installed software when phone gets flashed?

Do I need a 32K sim to be able to do network select?

Interesting question: when you purchase software for mobile phone how do you get it replaced after flash or repair or new phone purchase?

Thanks!

Posted by: evan_silbert

In our tests, most, if not all Cingular sim cards will allow Network Select with unbranded firmware on the 6230b. It is possible that a particular variation does not, but we have not encountered it.

Unfortunately, all applications in your phone will be lost when your phone is reflashed. You may want to ask the company that sold the application to you if they will issue another license for the same IMEI in the event that you send your phone in for service. Hopefully, they will accomodate you.

You can use a program like gammu (http://www.gammu.net/) to read the filesystem "raw", and copy the actual JAR files off of your phone. Using a generic bluetooth dongle and a linux box, I'm able to slave off everything on the phone (a lot of stuff you never see normally). You can also use it to make good backups of all your contacts, sms, mms, etc.

Posted by: makoona

Thanks for great information.

Evan, Will the original OEM software be on the phone? beachrally, golf, corld clock, translator, converter II?

I'm not linux savvy, but I think Mobi MB might let me move the jar files onto my computer and back again.

Seems like at some point mobile phone software developers will need to find a way to offer backup copies... just like computer software has, for paid software.

Posted by: evan_silbert

All factory installed ringtones, graphics, games, and applications will be in the phone.

Posted by: billsmith1

When do you plan to start flashing phone with v5.51 firware?

Posted by: LosAngelesRider

Can you ennable Net Monitor on the N90?
