Newbie Ringtone Question

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: sharp903

I have seen a lot of questions about setting an mp3 ringtone on a Sharp903 but I can't seem to get it to work on mine. I have a UK FM model and my provider is Rogers in Canada.

Here are my questions regarding ringtones for my phone:

1. Will my phone play mp3 ringtones?

2. What is the best utility to use to convert any mp3's I have on my PC to use as a ringtone on my phone?

3. I managed to get my WAP working on my phone. Is there a URL I can go to on my phone to download mp3's?

Sorry if these questions have been asked a million times before. Having lots of fun configuring my 903 and eager to learn more!

Thanks

1 mp3s will play has to be under 192kbps, ACC works too
2 Goldwave to edit, some kind of wav to mp3 converter, then itunes to convert to ACC. Use the IMA.mp4 swap trick.
3 you dont wanna dl mp3s cause it goes straight to your phones memory, which is small. buy a card reader and load that shiet.

no problem, sharp 4 life playa.

Posted by: sharp903

Thanks for the advice!

OK, I have used GoldWave to create an mp3 of the eventual ringtone. Then I used iTunes to import it as an AAC file. I transferred the AAC file over to my Sharp 903 via Bluetooth and it now sits in my Sound Gallery on the phone memory as an m4a file. When I try to set it as my ringtone, it tells me it cannot assign due to illegal file. The file was created at 128Kbps and is about 400Kb in size.

Further suggestions??

Posted by: Maikurukun

heh. i'm in the same boat..
i've concluded that it mightbe that we have newer firmware or.. we are retarded. and we totally missed something in the process.

Posted by: sharp903

I think we're just about there...just need to know what totaltoanage meant by "use the IMA.mp4 swap trick."

The m4a file is on my phone and saved to the phone itself (not the memory card) and I can play it in my sound gallery. However, when I atttempt to set it as a ringtone it gives me the error. So close....

Posted by: Maikurukun

lol. lets go beg him and bow down to him.. seee iff he can explain to us whats wrong...

I know whats wrong..
The phone is tricked.. i know its tricked into playing the ima.mp4 file.. but.. its also not playing the ima file.. its refering to the default ringtone instead of playing the ima.mp4 file.

Posted by: dav34

Did you have CBR (constant bit rate) for your mp3?

Posted by: Maikurukun

hmm..
i had mine at 128kbs and 44000hz..
I cut the song down the 30 seconds.

i've tried 96kbs and stuff.. nothign is working. >,<

Posted by: dav34

Those numbers are fine... and those don't matter...
But you gotta check whether it's CBR or VBR (variable)...

Posted by: sharp903

I think I missed the part about "tricking" the phone to play the ima.mp4 file.

I currently have a file in m4a format and would like to proceed. How do I trick the phone? Or how do I do the ima.mp4 swap trick?

Posted by: Maikurukun

ohh.. how would i be able to find the cbr theN?
i think the swap trick occurs when
- step where u set ima.mp4 file to ringtone
then.. delete the ima.mp4 file
then.. rename the mp3/acc and name it ima.mp4.

So, when u look at what the ringtone is in setting. it displays ima.mp4.

Problem is that, it ignores the trick.. and gose sright to default ringtones.. even though its visablly says ima.mp4 is the ringtone.

Posted by: sharp903

Hey...I appreciate your assistance. However, I'm still a newbie here and am not following you entirely.

1. I have a file called XYZ.mp4 that I created by taking about 30 secs of an mp3 I have then converted it to AAC using iTunes.

2. I transfer the XYZ.mp4 to my 903 via Bluetooth and it is saved on my phone not my memory card. I can play the file from within the Sound Gallery.

3. When I try to set it as my ringtone it tells me it is an illegal file.

Q1: do I have to rename XYZ.mp4 to ima.mp4?

Q2: how do I remove the default ima.mp4 file from the phone and move my ima.mp4 file in its place?

Posted by: totaltoanage

noobssssssssssssss arghhhhhhhhhhhhhh! ahha

its cool i was there once.

anyway heres how it works.

1. Make your ringtone and edit cut past etc and convert it to .mp4 format with itunes

2. Transfer it to your sound and ringtone direct, play it to see if it works

3. Move it over to your phone internal memory.

4. Get the IMA.mp4 from that link i gave you guys and put it also in your internal
memory (its small)

5. Your ideal ringtone is lets say ABC.mp4, now rename your IMA.mp4 to lets say
Ringtone.mp4 and set it as ringtone. Getting it?

6. Now after you set the Ringtone.mp4 (IMA initially) rename it again back to IMA.mp4
so you know what is it.

7. Then you take your ABC.mp4 (ideal ringtone that you created) and rename it
to....you guessed it, Ringtone.mp4.

Now if you look up your rintones, the phone will display Ringtone.mp4 and will look up that file to play thus tricking the phone.

You can do this to each individual person.

Am i clear?

Edit: you dont remove the IMA.mp4, keep it...since its vital to your ringtone needs.

Posted by: sharp903

Totaltoanage...this makes it much clearer...thanks.

But what kind of noob would I be if I didn't have another (dumb?) question. You said:

"4. Get the IMA.mp4 from that link i gave you guys and put it also in your internal memory (its small)"

I don't see that link you gave before. Can you tell me what the link is again?

Thanks!

Posted by: Maikurukun

soo. i did everything word for word.
it says: For Voice Call Ringtone.m4a
but.. when i call my own number.. it still plays Carnival du Brazil. and it says Ringtone.m4a is my ringtone.

So its tricked. but not playing the ringtone i want.
Maybe its the acc file i'm trying to use.. i'll reedit

Posted by: Maikurukun

http://howardforums.com/showthread....77&page=2&pp=15

hehe.. total msged that to me before
that has the link to ima.mp4

Posted by: sharp903

OK...here is where I am at and what I have tried:

1. Cut a 30 second clip from an mp3 at 96kbs and saved it as ABC.mp3.

2. I then import it into iTunes where I convert it to AAC format. iTunes saves the file as ABC.m4a.

3. I transfer this file to my Sharp and am able to play the clip.

4. I put ABC.m4a on the phone memory, not the memory card.

5. I download IMA.m4a (unzip it) and put it on my phone memory. I am able to play this file on the phone.

6. I rename IMA.m4a to Howard.m4a on the phone itself.

7. I set Howard.m4a to be my ringtone.

8. I rename Howard.m4a back to IMA.m4a.

9. I then rename my ABC.m4a to Howard.m4a on the phone.

Result - does not work. The phone defaults back to one of the preset sounds. Trying to force it to use Howard (formally ABC) results in the illegal file error again.

DOH!!!

Posted by: totaltoanage

thats really weird. you seem to do everything right. what firmware do you guys have again.

Try it on this ringtone that i maded

Posted by: sharp903

OK, my dumb question for the day...how can I check the FW version on my phone? I have english language on the phone itself but I have seen some pre-loaded themes that look either Japanese or Chinese...the buttons on the phone also have what appear to be either Japanese or Chinese characters beside the English characters.

Posted by: Maikurukun

hmm.. wel.. that doesn't help. =P
is there a re-provisioning thing that pops up everytime u push something?
or you can go to languages - there should be something that looks like
言語___

Posted by: sharp903

TOTALTOANAGE - we're on to something.

I downloaded your ringtone, moved it over to my phone memory and went through the steps you have described and VOILA! It works!

So obviously it has to do with the way I created the sound files.

How I created the sound files:

1. I have AC/DC Back In Black as an mp3. Using Gold Wave I select a 30 second section that I want and save it as a different file in mp3 format.

2. I take the shorter mp3 and import it into iTunes.

3. using iTunes, I convert it to AAC format. I then go to the location where iTunes stores the new file.

4. I copy the iTunes BackInBlack.m4a file to the phone and go through the rest of the steps.

Do you see anywhere in these steps that may be the problem? What bit rate should I use when created the shorter mp3 file?

If you can let me know what settings you use to create the mp3 and m4a sound clips it may help me out.

Thanks for all your help! Much appreciated.

Posted by: Maikurukun

thats the Japanese firmware. AND... lol it didn't work totaloanage. Is there a way to find out if u're firmware is different from mine? and which production is mine?

Posted by: sharp903

Aha...Maikurukun...when I go under Settings, Languages, it says I can pick from traditional and simplified Chinese. I guess that means this has Chinese FW?

Is there something I can punch in to the phone that it will tell me the exact FW version?

Posted by: Maikurukun

hmm~~ it doesn't work for me. I have the Japanese firmware with reprovisioning problems.. maybe if i send it to timsta.. he can reflash and then it will work.. >,<

Posted by: totaltoanage

it should work if you have the jap fw. hell im still on the beta and it works. i believe all fws should work cause ACC is generally supported. Sharp hates to bug the priracy complaints from mp3s, so they use itunes mp4/ACC format.

From goldwave i save the edited ringtone as .wav PCM signed 16bit Stereo. Then i use Switch program to convert that from .wav to mp3. Then mp3 to ACC with itunes.

Heres the Switch program, its freeware so you dont have to pay. Also make sure you have these settings, 192Kbps CBR Stereo High Quality Encoding.

http://s37.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=...2D1762CEU05IZ3Y

PS: You can make the volume louder by going to Goldwave volume change and increasing it by whatever %. I normally increase till i see the peaks touching the box.

Hope this helps, if not then i think its a fw fault.

Posted by: Timsta

isn't taht the picture you send me back in june lol.

Posted by: Maikurukun

hmmm.. omggg. what the hell am i missing.
I've tried goldedit, sony sound forge, your switch program.. acc.. in all different type of formats... i've tried shortening to 30.. then 25 sec. then 20..

i see its tricked. but it doesn't want to play my song. always refers back to default.
grrrrrr.... T.T very sad.

lol.. i should get a professional to do this for me. jebusss..

Posted by: Maikurukun

=P at least i've learned how to edit music in the process. =P

Posted by: sharp903

Folks...I went to Bongo Wireless and had my phone flashe dot a 'hybrid' version that Kevin recommended there. Everything works now...I can set a normal mp3 as my ringtone now.

Posted by: bee

6. I rename IMA.m4a to Howard.m4a on the phone itself.

7. I set Howard.m4a to be my ringtone.

8. I rename Howard.m4a back to IMA.m4a.

9. I then rename my ABC.m4a to Howard.m4a on the phone.

u did wrong:

6, set ima.m4a as tone
7, rename ima.m4a to whatever
8, rename the file u wanna use as ringtone to: ima.m4a
voala it will ring

Posted by: Maikurukun

noo.. it doesn't work.. and sharp903.. theres been alot of bad beef with the hybrid f/w.. i've been reading on this forum. i like how theres no bar at the bottom with the japanese firmware... eventaully i'll get this stupid mp3 thing to work.. omg..

Posted by: Maikurukun

hmmm.. is there anybody which could show me what i'm doing wrong.. it must be something that i'm not thinking about.

when u rename.. do u put in "ima.mp4" or just ima? i thought it might be assumed. ...

thats the only thing i can think might be the problem. >.<

Posted by: D_RiDE

I couldn't get it to work as well.
I have tricked the phone, however, the phone doesn't play the "new" IMA file. Eventhough it's show IMA.m4a, it plays the preset melody as ringing tone.

I have tried both MP4 files, non of them works.

Posted by: Maikurukun

haha.. actually. i read on mobile-review.com sharp forum..
someone said that any Japanese firmware thats beyond 1.5.. this trick won't work.
but they gave a alternative. MMF way.. hehe. its not as good as ACC format.. but it'll do until i get the reprovisioning thing from timsta

Posted by: tt927

Hey Maikurukun,

Yeah, I just got mine flashed to jp fw with repro from Tim. But for some reason I am experiencing the exact same probs regarding the mp3 conversions and getting it to play in the phone. Did you figure a way around it? Cuz I am really sick of that default carnival song.

Any help is appreciated.

BTW...our japanese fw is not missing the bar at the bottom. It is a full screen wallpaper..I believe. : )

Thanks!

Posted by: Maikurukun

lol. ya. same thing.. i dont know how to check firmware versions on japanese firmware.. the usual code dosen't work.

I decided that i would just use mmf.. its on the mobile-forum.com website. in the sharp area. its a sticky.

but.. double check what we said in this forum.. see if you are doing anything wrong. then.. do mmf.. because mmf.. you can tell its bad quality.. but its better than that god foresaken carnival song. lol.

that song.. is a sign of my failure to not play acc on my 903. lol.

how about getting mp3 ringing tones to work on the SX833?

Posted by: Maikurukun

hehe can't help there.. i thuoght the SX833 firmware is mp3 drm-free..

Posted by: zabieru

it says illegal file when i tried setting my mp3 as ringing tone. i downloaded a protected mp3 file n tired setting as ringing tone, its says file size too large. den i cut it down to 30secs, it went back to illegal file.haha.

Posted by: Maikurukun

for mp3 files. i think u have to make it less than 2mb was the rule.
also check the rate.. like 96000kps or something.. in additioin u have to make the song 30 - 40 seconds or whatever.

for the SX833 firmware.. i think the file does not have to be protected.

Posted by: tt927

Hey Maikurukun,

Does that mean mp3 files actually works? That whole AAC conversion did crap for me...even when i cut it to 30secs with mptrim. Have u figured out how to use mp3 files as ringtones?

Thank you!

Posted by: Maikurukun

well some f/w has mp3 enabled. like the taiwanese version. where the Japanese versoin. u need to use MMF format.

thats all. i perfered using the japanese version because i like the extras it comes with.. and i think mff is good enough for a ringtone which will be muffled anyways because its playing from my pants. lol

Posted by: zabieru

maikurukun, i tried you said but, it still says illegal file. Think i'm gonna give up the idea of having mp3 ringing tones for my hk fw. haha.

Posted by: tt927

I have the Jap fw and the Itune conversion to aac does not work. I have downloaded switch to change the m4a files to aac and it does not work. I have mobile music polyphonic 1.5 and can't seem to conver to mmf (or maybe I am not using the program right?!)

I think I give up too...sucks. It would've been nice to have mp3 ringtones.

Can anyone tell me what programs they are using to conver mp3s to mmf?

Thanks!

Posted by: horent135

wow thanks for the instruction, it works!!! it was a pain in doing all the steps but it works, thanks again!

Posted by: blue_days

Mine worked on the JP firmware. I followed bee's clarification and did all the renaming in the data folder > sounds & ringtones location.

Posted by: aznfreak

Okay okay i got a question. Feels kinda noob and probably asked be4

these are my Steps since im using Jap Firmware.
1) Cut my ringtone out (use Mp3 Cutter)
2) Convert from Mp3 - Wav ( Used Ease Audio Converter)
3) convert from Wav - SMAF (Used the Yamaha Program)

but when i play it it has this fuzzy sound to it. its SOOOO different from the ringtones i download. Those song waay more Crisp and sounds more define if you get what i mean >< Any steps i did wrong??
