Help with USB Modem detection in MPT

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I've got two Motorolas here, a V3 Razr for myself, and a V186 for my girlfriend. Both are with Rogers. I picked up Phone Tools a few days ago, and it works great on my V3, but it won't work at all on the 186. Basically, it gets stuck at "initializing" when I start up MPT, and if I go into General Setup in MPT, hit the Communication tab and try the Change Modem option, I select the Motorola USB Modem option, during device detection I get the message, "Opening Motorola USB Modem," followed by, "Not accessible or in use by another application." No other app is using the thing, and if I swap phones it picks up my Razr just fine.

Is there something I can do to clear this up? My gf would very much like to be able to slap a few ring tones and wallpapers on her phone, and since I told her it wouldn't be a big deal to do it, so would I.

I suppose this could be considered a bump...

Could this be a defective phone? Is there a setting in the 186 to enable the modem? (I've been all over it and the manual and can't find any reference to one.) Does it possibly use a different cable than the Razr? (Can't imagine why it would.)

I'm open to suggestions.

It should use the same cable. Is your cable plugged into a usb port on the front of your computer? Sometimes phones won't respond or install correctly when on usb ports on the front of your computer, try a usb port on the back.
Reboot your computer, and power cycle the phone. Plug the phone back in, and try querying the modem in the device manager. If it won't respond, then you could try a master reset on the phone. And if this doesn't work, its going to be a problem with the phone, you'll have to send it in for repair.

I've actually been plugging the cable into a powered USB hub. Works fine with the Razr, but not with the 186. I'll get around the back of the thing and give it a try.

Thanks for the advice, appreciate it. I'll see how it works tonight.

Yeah definately try on the back... the ports on the front of a computer are technically on a hub, thats why there can be problems. Hubs + motorola phones = not good

Worked perfectly. As soon as I popped it into one of the back ports, the modem responded fine in the device manager, and MPT worked flawlessly. Odd that the Razr would work through the hub while the 186 won't, but I'm just going to leave the cable in place and access both phones through the back.

Thanks very much for the advice, really appreciate it.

I have been having the same problem using an ICCS bluetooth dongle since I don't have a cable. Would it also matter for the dongle which USB plug is used? (I have a laptop with 2 on the side and 2 at the back.)

I only think it matters for phones over USB cables. Of course the BT dongle might have similar issues. Is your dongle not working at all?

I also have been trying to hook up mpt on my new v557. everytime i hit connect usb cable i get a message that says cannot find a device. I even tried a usb port on the back of my pc and it still don't work. When i go to device manager and test the driver its says installed correctly.

What version of MPT do you have installed, and what version of windows? Did you query the modem in device manager and get a response? The V557 requires MPT 3.25 or higher. If you're at a lower version, then do a live update.

Once you get get a response from the modem, then you can manually set up MPT to use it. I'll give steps if you get that far.

I think so, it is detected by the Widcomm driver and I can also pair it with Widcomm, when I try to connect to MPT the wizard identifies the phone but can not complete the pairing. The dongle keeps blinking - I don't know what that means.

Since its not a motorola bt adapter, MPT can't communicate with it. You'll have to set up the pairing manually, and then set up MPT manually as well. Lemme take my lunch here, and I'll give the steps to do that for you when I come back.

Maybe I should just write a sticky... I end up answering the same questions over and over

Okay, with the widcomm drivers, right click on the BT icon in the system tray, and select quick connect, and DUN (dial up networking). Search for your phone (make sure its in "find me" mode first). It may open up a connect to internet window, if it does, just cancel it. The phone should be showing as a Bluetooth Modem under windows, see if you can query the modem in device manager.

If that works, then lets go from there. Let me know what version of MPT you have.

Thanks, I tried the quck connect for all the services with the phone being paired already. Nothing connected. I think this cheap ICCS dongle is useless.

Thanks, i updated mpt on line and it works great.

Thanks again.
