I am ready to chuck my old nokia brick and upgrade to GSM and data capability.

Equipment:
I have axim x3i with PPC 2003, used for mostly outlook functioning (but not email really)
and dell 700m laptop that is always with me.

I can buy a phone (2125?) to hold me over until the next (better than edge) data technology is implimented. Although wireless is nice, I don't think I would need the 8125. It would serve as an excuse to settle for edge for a long time. Although the keyboard is nice, it is larger and bulkier, and I ususally have my backpack whereever I go anyways but like my phone in my pocket.

I am looking to use the phone as a phone, data planner, and as a modem for my laptop. Is there a phone I can use to act as a modem for my laptop and get charged by minutes instead of by data amount?

If absolutely necessary, I can also go with Verizon, and maybe tmobile, my long time GF has cingular and cell to cell is really important.

Also, if I go with a 8125, wouldn't I have to get a PDA plan, and spend more money (I am a college student)???

Thanks for your comments.

I currently have the 2125 and it certainly does everything you ask. Infact, it is tethered to my laptop right now, and my cable internet has been acting up as of late. I dont know of any data plans that charge by minute as opposed to data usage. If you get the 2125, you can get the unlimited data plan for $20 which isn't bad. If you wait and purchase the 8125, they will try to charge you $40/month simply b/c it is a "pda phone".

ok, so I went instore, and played with the 2125. They were out of stock, but claimed they could do the retention plan I wanted. The only thing I didn't like was not being able to stylus the screen. only because text input was more difficult. I tried to set an appointment in the calendar, and well, maybe it takes some practice. I will definitely have to carry my x3i- at least for several months.
