new to blackberry. questions....

cingular blackberry 7290. i use OS X. on blackberry OS version 3.8.x. is there anyway i can upgrade to 4.x on OS X? i tried using virtual PC but the blackberry desktop software doesn't detect the blackberry when i plug it in via USB. any solutions?

i dont have the blackberry data plan w/ cingular since i dont feel i need it since i wont be using the push email, etc. altho, i want to be able to use AIM on it. do i need a third party software for aim usage? will it be charged as text messages?

please help!

Wow a bump a whole hour after your first post. If you want to update your BB OS you'll need a PC period. No way around it at this point and Virtual PC won't work. If you want to use third party data apps IM, Web, SSH etc. you need a BlackBerry Data Plan, no BlackBerry Data Plan no email, third party data apps, web etc. no there's no way around it. Sounds like you bought yourself a really expensive Phone/PDA for voice and SMS.

I imagine now that PocketMac has been licensed, this functionality would be forthcoming. Who knows how long that might take though.

Maybe its a refurbished 7290 in which case it wouldn't be so expensive. What do they run now, 60 bucks?
