p2k tool and p2k man won't connect

Here's the deal, I want to edit the gain table to increase earpiece vol. I have read all up and down these forums and have done a bunch of stuff but cannot get p2k tool to connect with phone. If it helps, I didn't buy a usb data cable (have one that works though). Result, don't have moto software disk to install. can any one help!!! Using windows xp home.
