Does anyone know how Cingular deals with customers that have a ATT phone and wish to use a cingular sim card in the phone?

The manufactorers will not give any support on this matter!

As long as the phone is unlocked, no problem. Keep in mind if it is locked, Cingular will not provide the unlock code, it would be your responsibility. The manufacturer will also not provide the code either. You could either pay someone to unlock or read the phone threads to find out how you can unlock it.

Isn't the SP supposed to keep records of the unlock codes and at their descretion, give them to you if you need them in such a way as to not damage your business with them?

no.

why does this thing require at least a 10 character response? oh well.

The original service provider was AT&T and Cingular is not obligated to supply the unlock codes. Please read the threads about this in the forum. This question has been asked many times, many ways but the answer is the same. You can pay to unlock the phone, that is your choice.

Uh, no. Some providers (T-Mobile) do that as a courtesy, provided you meet some criteria (have service for X amount of months, paid X amount for the handset, etc.) Cingular Orange also provides the codes, following pretty much the same criteria as T-Mobile. ATTWS didn't provide them, and Cingular Blue seems to be continuing that policy, though some people have reported success.

Now, what I'm wondering is - I'm getting a Cingular Orange V3 tomorrow (bought it from a co-worker for $40), and I want to unlock it. Orange provides unlock codes, but not to Blue customers. So I'm probably gonna hafta get someone else who has an orange account to call and get the unlock code for me.

Is it still Cingular's policy not to unlock ATTWS phones?

I can't find the thread suggesting one way or the other.

I just experienced that yesterday at my local Cingular store, so I would say 'yes it is'!

And they just told me on the phone they couldn't/wouldn't do it.

I may try again in a few days.

Do I hear CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT?

Seriosly, Cingular, T-mobile, CorrWireless, etc. are getting a little too big for their britches....

I find it absolutely detestable that these companies will not support customers. Especially if you own the phone, IE the contract expired, or if you have bought the phone. I collect older phones, but I had to ditch one of my LG's because I could find no way that I could unlock it without spending 100's of dollars on a box.

I would love to see the looks on the exec's faces when someone actually steps up to the plate and serves them. AND YES I do believe that we have the right to use devices which we own. These guys have no right to lock a phone and then never supply the unlock code when they have it right in front of their faces.

What about their arbitration clause? F*** that. We aren't complaining about their service, only that they have locked a device which we own.

In Alabama, US, some cities have passed ordinances stating that no parking lot or otherwise interested party/business may "boot" a car without allowing the owner to pay $20 or less to "unboot" it. For you people that have no idea what I am talking about: a parking boot is a device which clamps onto a wheel of a car that locks the car in such a way that the car cannot move. This is usually done to people who have parked their car in places that they shouldn't have. For years, that was OK, but eventually people who weren't advised that they should not park in an area were "booted" and charged $500 in some cases. Other abuse followed....lawsuits rose, and then, people got fed up and the local government took a stand! YAH... same principle here...!

Good luck with that, not very likely.

Talk to 1-866-293-4634 and tell them that according to the recent policy chage (that you have heard), ATT Customers are allowed to have unlock codes made available upon request. Talk to them, they would surely listen to you and take the necessary details about the phone you want to unlock (IMEI#) and will send you the unlock code (subsidy code) and its instructions...

You don't need a wish of luck from anyone here...its your privilege.

Is there a recent policy change? And how recent is it?

When I was thinking about going to t-mobile, I called them and asked if they would unlock my att phones. They said no, but that Cingular might. The t-mobile rep implied there might be some legal obligation to do so, but was vague about this. I did ask, hypothetically, that if a t-mobile customer wanted to go to cingular would they unlock a phone? And he said yes. I've also heard that Cingular, and other companies, will unlock a phone if you tell them you are going to oversears and need to use your phone there, with the expectation you will return home and resume service. You could try that.

I did however recently migrate from att to Cingular. They said they would not unlock my phones for use with them. I have Nokia, though, which are supposedly a snap to unlock. Google your phone and unlock.
