Dismantling a670 + Pics

WARNING: Do this and break your phone, its not my fault!!!!!
WARNING: This is for informational purposes only, and will VOID your warranty. The only reason why I did this is because I have no insurance on the unit and warranty expired.

ALSO: Please excuse the Image Resolution (If images were smaller they would loose detail under JPG compression, this way they are not so big to download, yet have some detail...)

One of my a670 (VZ) decided to throw a blue screen of death.

Motherboard replacement helped it work , though when you swap a motherboard the ESN obvously changes and you need to call your carrier, I was lucky andother a670 (I had 1/2 a phone - screen half broke off)

Here are my notes and pictures (click on the line 10 photos - sorry if too large)

The phones two halves are disassembled easily.

The lower part + motherboard is secured by 5 (not 4) screws. You will need a good small screwdriver.

Dismantlement.

A) To help you work remove un-needed stuff from the phone.

a.1) remove the battery retention clip, and the external
antena jack cover (small amourphous plastic - falls out automatically somtimes, (revealing the 5th screw)

a.2) Take out the transparent onboard antenna protector.

a.3) Extend antena all the way.

B) Remove 5 screws retaining bottom part of the phone (the part with the keypad) if the screws do not come all the way out, don't pull them, they are designed not to fall out completely.

C) You can now separate the phone back cover from the phone [ CAREFUL, it has a speaker, with a cable that needs to be unplugged so don't just pull the thing off]

Also don't pry it with a screw driver, use something soft and plastic, otherwise you'll ruin the soft plastic parts.

PIC 2 and 5 Phone backplate + Speaker Connector:

D) After you have removed the back cover, close the phone. The motherboard depicted here is retained just by plastic, before removing it, CAREFULY DISCONNECT the LCD Display JACK that looks GOLDEN orange, and goes to the other half of the phone. (In the LCD part that jack IS PERMANENTLY SOLDERED NOT LIKE ON LG PHONES so if you BREAK IT YOU'll NEED A NEW LCD DISPLAY not just a small RIBBON CABLE)

PIC 3 - Motherboard:

PIC 8 - Display Connector You need to be real careful with:

Once you remove the motherboard/PCB from the phone plastic you should end up with something like this:

The keypad rubber should fall out (if it is stuck, its because of some substance that got in) carefuly take it out, don't peel it like a sticker - it does not have any connections.

PIC 10 - Keypad:

----- TOP HALF of the Phone --- EXTRA CARE ---

The top half of the phone is openable by

A) removing the two plastic stickers that cover screws right below the front (BIG user display) - then CAREFLY AS ALWAYS unscrew, then pry the display COVER off - Study this PIC to see where the screws are. Display cover is held
more at the edge tip of the phone where the earpiece is, so pry from the (BEND/SWIVEL base)

PIC 6 - Display cover:

The display assembly IS _ONE_ along with rubber glued RING speaker and EAR SPEAKER. Those are soldered to the display assembly, don't rip the wires off. The display
assmembly as you can see extends the plug to the bottom part of the phone. So if you happen to have a phone thats (in two parts - flip snapped off) then you'll need a new display assembly from a healthy phone - not just a ribbon cable like on some LG's.)

------ CAMERA REPLACEMENT COMPLETELY advanced ---
Taking extra care not to mark up the display, you can detach the rubberglued speakers and pull away the dual display module

You wil see below it a camera with a connector that you can detach, (don't break these ribbons please).

If you did not use rubber gloves (or even if you did) I suggest cleaning with Lens Cleaner (you can get them cheaply @ LensCrafters) or a Camera store - (DONT USE RUBBING ALCOHOL OR ANYTHING THAT LEAVES LINT)

Why do I say this, well you would hate to look @ a perfect fingerprint that you cannot wipe off from the LCD pannel
without disassembling the phone.

Also an air can can blow out any dusts/particles that may have endded up in the phone (either while disassembled or during operation) - The number one source of rattle though is not things loose in the phone but the onbord antenna.

By doing this now I have a working [non bluescreened] a670 phone again. VZ took $20 from me to activate it with a new ESN though .... :-(.

Thanks

I flushed my phone down the toilet last night. I amazingly got it back, 3 inches wedged in the S turn, close to going down the main sewage system. I followed your directions to take my A670 apart to remove the water spots from my displays. Thanks so much you have given me a great service!

Great job on the How-To. Are there any other models this How-To would be the same as?
