store experience..not fair

i don't work at cingular. but i read the cingular forums and when it came time to add a line, i figured that i would go into the corp store at my mall and do so..
well, i go into the store and the guy was cordial, etc. i said i wanted to add a line, and he asks for my number and name and tells me that the contract will be extended for two years, which was fine (even though i thought for some reason that it would only form a new 2 year contract on the 9.99 added line and leave the main line alone). Fine, i can deal with that.
next, he tells me that i need to add a 9.99 media bundle to my plan for one month to add a line. it's at this point that i start to get a little skeptical. 9.99 just to add a line? i'm already signing a two year contract.
moving on, the guy asks me what phone i had in mind. well, i looked online and SIX phones were for free and the nokia 6030 was 19.99 and the nokia 6102 was 29.99. i had enough money on me to pay for these phones if there weren't any free ones. i did expect to be offered a free phone in the store, since there were 6 offered for free online, and i said..well, i'll get whatever's free, im not really picky...
there were no free phones available in the store. HOW can the stores compete with cingular.com??? I was pissed, not at the guy, but at whoever is pricing the phones so that you are pretty much paying 80 dollars MORE if you go into a store. i think he said i could pay 80 dollars for the nokia 6102, and that that was the cheapest phone that they had. i felt bad that i had to leave the store, for no other reason that while i wanted to give this store some business, it would have been STUPID to do so! I would have paid 20, 30, 40 for the phone..i would have paid a $36 activation fee..but to be binded by a 2 year contract and STILL paying $80 for a phone? when i can get the same phone online for free?

i just thought i'd share this..i don't think the stores have a fair shot, if they have a shot at all, at attracting customers. opinions?

^^EDIT^^i'd also like to add that the store is right next to a radio shack..not across, not diagonal, but right next to a radio shack. there was one person in the cingular store and i'm pretty sure they were arguing about something on a bill. cingular is going out of its way to screw this store and others like it.

When did you go to the store? And how do you know it is corporate? Right now we have around 4 - 5 phones for $30 or less. And yes, the 6102 is $29.99 after the $50 MIR at the corp. stores.

And, for the record.. you do NOT need to renew the contract on ALL lines. If he told you this then it was a straight out lie.

Think about how much space rent, utilities, commissions, base pay, benefits, etc, etc, etc is for an actual store, then compare it to running a website.

I dont get customers who feel things should be free.

Well you could call Care and complain but they would probably add a line for you too. Heck they dont want you to buy from us because of what the above post said, more overhead and such in cor as compared to websites.

Why Is This In The Agents And Employees Forum... This Is Going To Be Closed

I have read this 3 times and still am amazed. All the OP would have to do is search number one. You would have seen 10 threads about people wanting to know why online deals are so much better. You pay for convenience in the store... You get to ask a person questions, learn about the device, and make them some commission. Online... they dont pay ANY commission, you dont talk to anyone, and there is VERY little overhead... so there are cheaper prices

You can always get it online, but don't expect to recieve help in the store when you have troubles with the phone you recieved in the mail. Call customer care; "We can't (wont) do anything about it" Typical customers will think this is crap. "Arent you cingular?" " I got this from cingular!"

The store covers commissions, bills, utilites, wages, insurance, etc... a normal business.

The $9.99 media bundle add is a scam. It's not required to add a line.

If you don't want to pay anything but just the tax, get it online; No ones stopping you.

As soon as the rep said that you had to add the media bundle I would have thanked him for his time and left.

It's one thing to be pushy and offer medianet but it's another thing to tell them that they have to get it.

To the OP, I wouldn't feel bad at all.

the prices of the internet v. the prices in the store are not even comparable. what i was trying to say in the OP was that i understand it costs more money to run a whole store versus paying someone to sit in front of a computer and answer a phone. however, there is no comparison in prices. there is no middle ground--even if the phone itself was 9.99 online, the stores might have a better chance. i almost don't blame the rep for lying to me, apparently, about signing a new 2yr for both lines and trying to force a 9.99 media bundle..i very well might have been his first customer all day at 7 pm.
