Motorola E815 or LG vx8100 - which one to choose?!

not sure which phone to choose? i am thinking about switching from Sprint to Verizon and I'm torn between the E815 or LG8100. Please give me your honest opinion about which phone is better. i'm not familiar with Verizon service - so any info on that would be appreciated as well.

i'm a basic phone user - meaning i make and receive calls, text messages, and the occasional picture share. i want to be able to receive and send text msgs while i am on the phone. meaning i don't want to have to end the call - log on to the internet to read the msg - i had that problem with a Sprint phone i previously had.

custom rings: necessity! i want to be able to download special ring tones (real music not the keyboard rendition). i like the new option Verizon provides with callers hearing their ring tone when they call - which phone works with that service? (also, are there any sites out there that you can download ring tones for free to Verizon phones? there's one for Sprint phones that i use all the time...)

phone to PC: i want to be able to download pics from my phone to my computer - which phone has that capability?

the 8100 will do it with BitPim & cable/Bluetooth
i can put mp3s on the SD card and play them. also using bitpim, i can send mp3ringers to the phone.

i never used the E815.

do you have any complaints with your phone (8100)?

I have had both, I started out with the 8100 but the signal was poor at my work so I ended up trading it in the for 815. The signal is stronger with the 815, my husband kept the 8100 & sometimes I will have signal in places he does not. Feature wise they are very similar, however the 8100 take a SD card & the 815 take a mini-card. I have loaded music onto both & they both work well however the external speakers on the 8100 are better. The screen on the 815 is a bit larger than the 8100, both internal & external but the 8100 seems to take a little bit clearer pictures than the 815. Just my opinions, good luck with whatever you choose !!

I recently traded my 815 for the 8100. I didn't get good call quality with the 815 at all. I liked the 815's user friendly menus and large fonts, especially the large clock display on the outer screen. But the call quality was so poor that I was constantly asking people to repeat. My husband travels all over the US and he had the same problem and also had a lot of dropped calls. When we returned them for the 8100 the Verizon rep was surprised, but also said that they do get bad batches from time to time.

We love the 8100...absolutely love it. The call quality is near perfect and that's the most important aspect in a phone for us. The phone feels more substantial and better built. The moto felt cheap, especially the hinge...it was really flimsy.

The cameras were about the same on both. I expected to have a huge delay on the 8100 after reading that that was a problem. But it's only about a second or less. The 815 may have been a little faster. I think the pictures on the 815 were lower quality...a bit more grainy and pixelated.

One weak area in the 8100 is the voice dial...not good at all. Annoying actually. Too many commands to utter for the phone to finally dial and it usally gets it wrong anyway. It's faster to just punch in the number or look it up on the list sometimes.

Our last phones were the LG 4400 and we really liked those and the voice dial on those worked really well. You had to record the name of each contact in the contact options and that was a bit time consuming, but it always worked when you used the voice dial. I miss that feature.

Good luck with your decision. For me, hands down, the 8100 is the superior phone.

Very interesting! I have an 815 and love it, and have experienced absolutely zero problems. My wife has an 8100 and she loves it, and has experienced zero problems. And, we both traded up from 4400's (but we kept both of them, "just in case").

My only complaint, and this has nothing to do with verizon, is the poor performance of the Moto H-500 Bluetooth headset I purchased. It's fine when I'm working around the house, but put me in a noisy environment and it folds like a house of cards. I'm waiting to see how that tiny new Moto "in-ear" headset sounds.

Good luck with your purchase!

the voice command on the e815 is great. hit the side key and say "call john mobile". you can even say "call 222 222 2222" (or any # that might not yet be in your phone) one of my friends i have in my contacts as "Dre2k" and it gets that no problem which made me laugh the first time.
thing i hate is looking up contacts. on my LG6000 i could type "ba" and it would list all contacts starting with "ba" on the 815 you hit b it lists all the "b's" then go to hit "a" and it switchs to list all the "a's". must be really annoying if you have it filled to the 1000max contacts.
i had the same decision to make. i went to the store to look at both a few times. i went with the e815 and i have no regrets. a big reason i went with the 815 was that on these forums there were so many posts about this phone. it took over the entire motorola forum and a bunch of people posted guides to unlocking all the features. at the time i didn't see anything like that for the 8100 but now there should be alot of info on 8100 as well.

edit: almost forgot both of these phones were switching up and down in price and i almost got the 8100 cause it would have been free with every2 online then it went up to $50 and the 815 became the free one.

on the e815- cnet said it doesn't have "analog roaming"- is this an issue in rural areas?

(I know, I'm asking this question in a couple of threads- but I'm on the cusp of getting this phone, and this was a last minute record-scratching issue. I'm in rural analog areas from time to time.)

Neither phone has analog.

My 8100 has external Play, Pause/Stop and Go Back keys on the front cover for the mp3 player. Love that ( I don't think the E815 has those, but I could be wrong).

Posted by: nashmoto

The E815 doesn't have the MP3 player external buttons, but the external camera button also functions as a stop button when MP3s are playing

I have owned the Mororola E815 since the day it first came out. It is by far the best phone I have ever had. It has never failed me and Verizon service is superb now. I am thinking of upgrading to the new Mortorola W385 but only because of the $100 credit on the E815 and the fact that the newer phone has a longer battery life and is a tad lighter and thinner.

I did read the comparison reviews 2 years ago between the LG vx8100 which came out just after the E815 and most reviews favored the E815.

Also, I have "paired" the E815 with the Motorola HF 820 speaker that clips on the visor of your car and can be taken off and used next to your computer or in another car. It is fantastic blue tooth hands free comunication!

Hope this was helpful.

E815 has extendable antenna, which I need in many hospitals and in weak RF areas.
Also, you can set both soft keys and the 4 navigation keys to shortcuts!
I frequently use Datebook and Calculator which I assigned to up and down arrows. Right arrow is pictures.

Hospitals call us in emergencies so we cannot have voice-mail.
I made that left soft key into Call Log. Right is Contacts.

So nice to instantly go where you want without having to Menu and scroll and intiate and again scroll to and intiate feature.

Of course, with the later model, Motorola 325i, Verizon took that all away.
We're allowed ONE assignable down arrow.
Though you don't want it:
You SHALL have ^ as Mobile Web
You SHALL have > as Get It Now
You SHALL have L soft key as Voice Mail

My e815 is the best phone I've ever had; it will require a supreme act of intelligence on Verizon's part (by offering a totally uncompromised phone with superior performance) for me to switch out of it; either that, or a lifestyle change on my part that mandates the purchase of a Treo or similar product.

As for the RAZR 2 or whatever it's called? I just don't like these Razors. Their architicture doesn't appeal to me.
