In order to make this upgrade working, you will need to delete or rename the VENDOR.XML file located at:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader\VENDOR.XML

I also upgraded 2 additional 7290 devices, no problem so far.

here's some instructions i found on Pinstack.com:

Confirmed upgrades:
Blackberry 7105t
Blackberry 7100t
Blackberry 7290
Blackberry 7100v
Blackberry 7100g
Blackberry 7100r

Follow these instructions and you should be able to have OS 4.1 working for you too.

1.) BACK UP YOUR DATA! - I can't stress how important it is to get a good backup in the event you need to retore your data.

2.) Verify that you are using the latest version of Desktop Manager. In the Desktop manager program on your PD use the Help menu and select About Desktop Manager. The latest version is 4.1.0.8. If you need the latest version follow this link.

3.) Download OS 4.1 from this link.
For 72xx bluetooth, download BlackBerry 7290 Wireless Handheld Chinese 4.1
For 71xx, download BlackBerry 7100g(TM) Multilanguage 4.1

4.) Install 4.1 using the .exe file you just downloaded.

5.) Delete the 'Vendor.xml' file ( C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader ) Or search your computer's hard drive for the "vendor.xml" file. Once you find it, delete it.

6.) Connect your device to your PC via the USB cable.

7.) Open Desktop Manager. It should recognize that there is an upgrade for your device. ('Vendor.xml' must be deleted for this step to work) Follow the prompts and you will have OS 4.1 installed in about 15 to 20 minutes.

Good luck and of course, myself nor pinstack.com can take responsibilty for any problems that may occur. I will however extend my assistance if you need it.

Troubleshooting:
If after OS install while connected via USB the hour glass spins allow your Blackberry at least 20 mins to load Do Not unplug

Known Issues:
Pocketday doesn't work with 4.1 except on Blackberry 8700's

Does anybody have any screenshots!

Posted by: jrsmooth

Just updated two more 7290, no problem at all.

except for the default 'all mailboxes as seperate icons' part and the friggen 'must use microsoft's bluetooth drivers (which are VERY buggy and unreliable compared to WNDCOMM's more generic ones) for bluetooth sync...

i like it

screenshots on a 'berry are kinda tricky, unless you go the route you see just above.

someone at blackberryforums was working on a fix for this, but it would still be a wired execution.

speaking of bbfo, there are plenty of screenshots of the 4.1 themes users are coming up with, based on the Insight theme you see above.

as for images of the interface changes, i haven't seen any yet, but those tweaks and changes are mighty!

i'm still using the t-mobile theme so its basically the same with more functionality...

What do you mean "all mailboxes as seperate icons"? I have 5 email addresses going to my BB and they all come into the Messages Icon. I would love to seperate mine out, because they are from different jobs and can be a little confusing at times who's asking for what. Is this a setting you have or a bud that cant be changed?

I have a 7290 w/ ver 4.1 (love it so far) on T-Mobile, running both BIS & BES.

Thanks

I have 6 addresses coming to mine

When i loaded 4.1, initially i had 7 mailbox icons.

1 for each mailbox then the general one where all messages also came to.
if a message was deleted/changed/replied to from either the main or specific box it would reflect that change in the other.

I just hid the other 6

is this when using the included BB Insight theme, perhaps?

after my 4.1 installation, the "default" tmo GUI was active. i took a stab at the Insight, but didn't like everything being on one screen (that's entirely too much wheelin' to do!) so i went back. never gave it a try after i resent my Service Books, so maybe i would've had too many mailboxes, too.

i use the hong kong csl 4.1 os on this 7290.
its not really stable for me as for now, i cant delete some emails from previous OS backup : data not recognised. so i have to go in backup and restore and advanced to erase entries manually. Besides that bluetooth sync works fine and i was able to finally install my 8700 styled theme for 7290.

Did you use the 7290 file from the above link, even though it said Chineese?!?
If it works...

Ok, I did this upgrade on my 7100t and it all seems to work, except I cannot get the O2 theme to run. Vodaphone, TMo, etc. are all fine but O2 causes a javascript error...any ideas?
