GPRS/EDGE coverage map.

Hello folks,

I am looking for T-mobile GPRS/EDGE coverage map. Does anyone have one? I looked into T-mobile coverage but did not see any GPRS/EDGE coverage but only voice coverage. Look at Cingular and Verizon Wireless coverage map that provides difference between voice and data coverage.

A few years ago, I went through Kansas during my vacation. When I was in western Kansas, I ended up phone-only icon on my sidekick phone (Westlink). Later I looked into T-mobile coverage and it said just coverage but did not mention voice, data, or both. I do not still know which coverage - voice, data, and both.

Thanks!
Tim

The Kansas coverage has dramatically increased in the past two years. There has been alot of EDGE rollout with Cingular, but I cant confirm on the other local carriers like Western Wireless, etc. From the appearance though, alot of work has been done in Kansas. I could hardly use GSM at all outside of the cities 2 years ago, and now it's nearly seamless in most of the rural areas I travel frequently in KS. One of the big reasons I just switch to T-Mobile is that their coverage is almost replicated of Cingular's coverage in Kansas now. Same coverage for me and huge discounts + tons of extra minutes =

For parts of Northern California, Southern Oregon, Southeastern Idaho and Western Wyoming, this is the EDGE and GPRS coverage, via Cingular's Affiliate, Edge Wireless-

What about DC Metro?

Is there any indication on the phone if it is in an EDGE coverage area? Is there any indication that you are connected via EDGE? my phone is an MDA if it matters.

Thanks

Yes, most if not all newer phones will show an "E" to indicate that the site your phone is connected to has EDGE on it.

Kansas is so flat though, coverage is a piece of cake compared to out here

I have never seen the "E" only the "G" icon on my MDA (HTC Wizard from TMO). Even when in areas that are listed as 100% EDGE. Am I doing something wrong?

Where Canu Guys See A Complete Coverage Map Of Edge... Im In New Jersey And Was Told By T-mobile Reps That They Dont Have Coverage Maps

Posted by: cheerioboy26

There are no coverage maps of GPRS or EDGE publicly available.

Posted by: ilvla2

Any idea why cheerio? Is it just because they haven't gotten around to it?

All I know is that T-Mo rocks in south central Kansas (South of Wichita)!!! I had Cing for the last 4 years, 2 of which were on GMS and I had virtually no coverage in my home town. I just made the switch and I have a full 5 bars sitting in my living room!!! I say to T-Mo!!!!

Posted by: jeffro01

where do you live south of wichita? I have a lot of experience with the network in that market

Jeff

Posted by: shady1475

30 miles south in Wellington.

Posted by: jeffro01

cool, i had a friend that lived there but i haven't spoken to him for awhile lol

A new site (well relatively new) went online at 47th st S & Meridian, depending on how you come into wichita that may or may not help you lol

Jeff

Posted by: shady1475

Well I usually go up 81 and through Haysville then out by the airport. I've been really happy so far with the coverage. I hope they don't let me down like Cingular did. Glad to hear from someone who's got knowledge of the network around here. Take it easy Jeffro!!

Tmobile does not utilize edge icons. Other than a speed test or asking CC if edge is available in a given zip code there is no real way of knowing.

Posted by: ilvla2

I'm getting an E on my T-Mobile SDA right now, I'm actually on Edge Wireless's (Cingular Affiliate) network though, but still, if they don't use EDGE icons, it shouldn't show up, roaming or native network, should it?

I'll use the engineering menu on my V551 to detemine the type of data services present since its reading the settings directly off the cell site I'm connected to.

Check out the MDA/SDA forums there is a registry hack you can use to get it to display, I;m in Houston and get the "E".

I talked to a CSR just a month or two ago and she told me there's no EDGE in Sacramento yet. I figured it's a big enough market they would have upgraded the network here by now, but I guess not. The bay area is enabled though.

if you have a motorola v360 or v330 all you have to do is one or two seem edits and you get that nice little e. i have it on mine right now

So, there are no EDGE maps publicly available? And since my phone doesn't specify if I'm on an EDGE network, there is no way for me to tell?

Bummer.

Posted by: Donkey

On the Moto, it'd change for G to E, not sure about the Nokia.

Posted by: SurrealNetworks

T-Mobile's phone software usually disables the E icon, displaying only a G regardless. Unlocked non-tmobile phones will display the E or, as others have mentioned, software or registry hacks will enable it. My mobile site has an easy to use cab registry edit for the SDA/MDA.

Any news on EDGE service here in NYC?

Cingular and Edge Wireless (a Cingular Affiliate) both show where EDGE is avaliable on their networks, I have yet to find any others that do that.

Edge Wireless-

I'm located half way between Ukiah and Willits on that map

The Purple on those maps is EDGE, Green is GPRS only.

Cingular has 3G in Austin now, come on T-Mobile

bumpin' for a tmo Edge coverage map - how about Cali and Nevada?? or do I presume the current coverage maps (I/m traveling up this weekend up the 395 to Mammoth and Reno) would give me the answers?

Posted by: ilvla2

I can't speak for those areas, but for NorCal, S OR, SE ID and W WY, if you go back to the previous page I put up the EDGE provided by Cingular's Affiliate, Edge Wireless, a T-Mobile Roaming Partner.

Posted by: mettmann

yep - missed it! - thanks!

Posted by: ilvla2

De nada! I live about 8 miles north of Ukiah on the CA map, this is all Edge Wireless territory.

Posted by: campusrunner

I have access to E/GPRS maps, they are huge (some as high as 14MB)! They are not as detailed as T-Mobile's on-line coverage check tool but they give a better idea than what is normally available. Let me know what is needed and maybe I can e-mail them to you.

Anything in the illinois area?

Posted by: Soul814

Yea, I was looking around for an EDGE map a while back and I couldn't find one. Anyways anyone got one for NY?

@campusrunner hey if you can provide me a link, I can try to upload it for everyone

Hey guys, I haven't forgotten about you! With the holidays, it has been nuts!

I'm trying to upload the maps that have been requested thus far, but the site will only allow a 14kB upload. Even cropping out areas in the image that are not needed (ie map key, areas that were not requested, etc.) and zipping the file with WinZip, the best I can do is go from 980kB to 148kB. ANy suggestions?

Also, I can not link to the site as it is a secure site and I'd be canned for sure for sharing login information. I could however e-mail a map to anyone that PMs me with an e-mail address. I'm sure this would be okay as I do not see the difference in showing these maps to customers in our store and e-mailing them over the net. Honestly, they should be posted on the T-Mobile consumer site.

I can also tell you that for the most part, T-Mobile only has EDGE in metro areas and close by suburbs. For instance, I'm in the Denver market and we only have EDGE from Ft. Collins south on the I-25 corridor thru the Denver metro area (nearly all suburbs too), Castle Rock, Colorado Springs, and ends in Pueblo. This is as of the map's publication date of 05.AUG.2005 and as far as engineering says, not much more has been added aside from indoor repeaters.

Here is a nice start-up EDGE coverage map:
EDGE Coverage

Posted by: ilvla2

T-Mobile's EDGE coverage in NorCal isn't good at all, all you have to do is go 10 miles or so outside of Sacramento and it's back to GPRS, while Cingular and Verizon are on with 3G. It's the same story thoughout much of NorCal, except for areas served by Cingular's Affilitate, Edge Wireless, they pretty much blanket their areas with EDGE, and they serve rural and small towns in CA, OR, ID and WY, I'm not sure why T-Mobile is so far behind.

It looks like T-Mobile has decided to skip or delay their deployment of EDGE and save the effort and money for their upgrade to 3G. Since, EDGE requires both hardware and software upgrades I have my doubts that T-Mobile will want to spend the time and money on what they perceive as a technology that will bring low returns on their investment.

EDGE is quite limited in terms of what media content and services it can deliver.

Is the CAPS LOCK key on your keyboard broken?

I am hoping for anything faster. Whether it be 3G or even EDGE. Nothing here except GPRS west of Minneapolis.

Any idea when 3G might roll out, or will rural areas not get 3G either?

I would like to see a EDGE map of the Minnneapolis area. Thanks!

I know that EDGE extends a fair way out from the Minneapolis area. Eden Prarie, Edina, etc all have EDGE, even though it is a fair bit spoty at times. Where abouts are you? (If you don't wanna say on the forum, PM me)

Posted by: abenusa

Hutchinson which is 45 miles west of Mpls. Community of 13K people. Glencoe which is south of here and has 1/2 as many people has EDGE. Also Cingular has EDGE out here. Go figure.

Good point, I hadn't even thought of that iownjoo.

Does anyone know if there is EDGE coverage in Florida for T-Mobile? Thanks!

Posted by: .:Drake:.

Bump! does anyone know?

Posted by: danska

I get edge around tampa when im down there. You should be able to call customer care and ask them. They should know.

Posted by: abenusa

I am living in rural Minnesota where there is only GPRS, no EDGE. So when T-Mobile finally rolls out 3G (probably years out here) does that mean EDGE will automatically be enabled as well? Reason why I am asking is that I am considering buying the T-Mobile Wings PPC (has EDGE, but no 3G) when it comes out in a month or so and wondering if I will ever see EDGE one day.

Does anyone know what the coverage is in the DC Metro/Northern VA area?

My boyfriend got a sidekick 3 the other day, and although I LOVE the phone- the Internet appears to be pretty slow on it. I'm looking into getting an SK3 as well, but I currently have Helio which has great signal strength everywhere (piggybacks off Sprint) and blazing 3G Internet pretty much everywhere in the area too. Would it be silly of me to switch?

Posted by: abenusa

I would like to know where the maps are coming from too.

If someone could show an EDGE map of the western Minneapolis western Minnesota area, that would be great

Posted by: SJSMR2

Anybody know coverage in Folsom, CA or Cameron Park, California. Both are about 45 minutes from Sacramento.
