Winamp Mobile (LightPlayer) for Motorola SLVR L7

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Just an FYI

As a person who has stores that make a living selling on eBay, let me say do not buy the headset adapter on eBay. I ignored the other posts and now I have two crappy adapters that are useless and do not transmit sound very well at all.

Just got the one from Cingular / Motorola.. you may pay 3x as much, but it works great.

I should have listened.

After reading through all the problems in this thread I was a little afraid to try Lightplayer, but I got it working perfectly on my ROKR the first time using the instructions in the first post. Here's what I did:

1. Changed USB connection to "Data/Fax Connection" through "Settings->Connections"
2. Connected phone (when prompted for drivers for each of the new devices, I pointed to the "P2K_Drivers" folder from MMM)
3. Launched MMM 0.37, it picked up my phone right away and loaded all the info (took the oppotunity to back up all the apps already installed)
4. Under the "Phone Memory" tab, clicked "Install->JAR file..." and pointed to where I had unzipped Winamp Mobile 1.0.jar
5. Once it was finished uploading to the phone, I right-clicked on Winamp Mobile in the app list and selected "Access->enable"
6. Clicked on "Restart" and waited until MMM status read "disconnected" to unplug my phone

And voila! I launched the app from my phone and it worked on the first try.

Couple of things I have noticed:
The internal phone memory is "/c/mobile/audio/" -- if you have created any categories, they are created as subfolders of this main one. e.g. I have "MIDI" and "MP3" categories so I had to add "/c/mobile/audio/MP3/" to get all my files recognized.

The TF card is "/b/" -- by default sounds are stored under "/b/mobile/audio/" just like the phone memory, but you can store them anywhere as long as you add the directory in Lightplayer. Obviously though if the songs aren't in /mobile/audio you won't see them in the phone's sounds menu.

Lightplayer doesn't seem to handle file formats any better than the default sound player unfortunately... it tries to play VBR files but as soon as the bitrate gets too high it will jump to the next song. Are people converting their mp3s just to play them on the phone? That seems kind of silly... I was hoping with a 3rd party app that the file handling could be improved, but I guess Lightplayer is still using the phone's internal sound routines?

This has almost gotten me off using iTunes, but I would like to see 2 things added:

1. Automatic scanning of subfolders
2. Improved file handling (e.g. VBR and higher bitrate files)

The first one is probably an easy fix -- if I had access to the source I could probably add it myself. Second one is probably not so easy, but I'm guessing someone has written mp3 routines in Java -- could these be plugged into the code?

These 2 programs work a bit differently so I'll tell you what I found regarding each of them --

Motorola Phone Tools
Make sure you have the latest version of MPT by using "Setup->Live Update". The latest version is 4.04, so you may have to run it more than once to get all the updates. MPT wouldn't recognize my ROKR initially, but once I updated to 4.04 everything was fine.

Also, MPT doesn't seem to care if your phone is in "Memory Card" or "Data/Fax Connection" mode when you connect it. If it's in the wrong mode, MPT will switch it for you.

Motorola MIDlets Manager
For MMM your phone has to be in "Data/Fax Connection" mode in order for it to be recognized. Switch your phone to that mode, connect it, and when prompted for the drivers, point it to the "P2K_Drivers" folder for each one. Once the drivers are all installed, launch MMM and it should pick it up just fine.

This is only what I did to get my ROKR working, but hopefully this will help you.

Oh, well. At least iTunes is pretty good on the SLVR and runs in the background. I just wish you could hook up the SLVR to more than 1 PC to make changes to iTunes on the phone. That's the limitation that really grinds my gears (even more so than the 100 song limit).

My Rogers branded ROKR also has "Details" instead of "Hide". If you think about it though, why would they have this function enabled when there's iTunes on the phone? They want you to use iTunes... unfortunately

If you're talking about transferring from iTunes, then I can understand. If the file you're transferring is higher than 128kbps, iTunes first has to convert it to 128kbps AAC before it transfers it to the phone, so it seems like it's taking much longer.

But if you're talking about the USB Mass Storage speed, then that's unusually slow... I find it's about 2mins for a 5mb file.

yeah, this was just over the USB2.0 mass storage connection, or through the motorola tools software. Maybe the software is less than optimized

It's just because the phone is slow at reading the TF card... using the SD adapter and a USB 2.0 memory card reader is remarkably faster, however you can't transfer iTunes songs this way or use most of the functions of MPT.

But if you're using Lightplayer, you don't need to use iTunes

Posted by: e-powersellers

Really, iTunes won't let you load songs on the Transflash card and you must transfer via iTunes only.. That @#$@# glad I decided to go with unlocked and Java players.

Have you tried formatting the transflash card in your phone? I know several others have had issues until the card was formatted by the phone. Once formatted, copy the files to /mobile/audio

Posted by: blakravhen

just finished formatting the TFcard, moved my mp3s inside the audio folder and tried winamp again ... no files ... so I tried clicking on list, folders, types, player mode, i pressed and held #7 key and tried clicking play, nothing ...

now, with "itunes mobile" how do i make it read my mp3s?

these files should come with a little "read me" notepad attachment file ^-^ i'm good at following directions, but most of these programs come w/o any, same goes for that "monster pack" thing, i tried looking for instructions cause I deleted my original Itunes from my V3i and some dude told me to do the MP thing to recover my files, now ... I have it in a folder, but how do I install it? didn't come with instructions, i went to the website and it explains about flex/flash/flux/flush/crap thing but nothing about monster pack or what programs to use with it ...

Everything in my phone works fine, video, pictures, ring tones, bluetooth, web browser, etc all good except for the iTunes which I managed to delete by mistake, I would just like to find a way to re-install it if possible and not have to delete everything and end up with a brick.

V3i (unbranded,unlocked, ... now w/o iTunes ... duh!)
bootloader
0A30
SW Version: R47A_G_08.D8.35R
FEM for GSM: version 500
XP skin
512mb TF
card reader/blootooth dongle/usb

Posted by: e-powersellers

Did you follow these steps?

Remove WinAmp from the phone or iTunes whichever.
Once removed restart the phone
Format the card
Install WinAmp according / exactly as the instructions say in the OP
Reset

Should work.

nope, nada, nothing, deleted all players, rebooted, formated the card, rebooted, launched MMM, installed Winamp Modern Mobile's Jad file, access was enabled, rebooted, transferred 2 mp3 songs to the audio files, rebooted for just in case and good luck, but didn't work.

I'd be happy with the player that comes with the phone if it could play a song list and if it would allow me to listen to the song while closed, I'm still trying to get DAP to work on my phone again, that's the only program that when did install it ran smooth, but lol none of my ringers would work, nor my alarms ...

As far as iTunes goes...did you install the java app via Motorola Midlets Manager 0.37? Uncheck signed & CORElet. Restart phone. Recheck CORElet. Restart phone. Put phone into Memory card mode. Reconnect to your computer. Run motoTunes. Hit "scan mobile", see if it finds your phone, it should then build the iTunes database (based on what MP3s are currently in your /mobile/audio folder on your TF card).

You can check to see if motoTunes has done anything by browsing to your phone/TF card in My Computer, check to see if there's an iTunes folder next to the mobile folder in the root of the phone/TF card.

Also, if/when you're in motoTunes and you see your phone with the iTunes "do not disconnect" screen, once you're done synching it with motoTunes you can then unplug it and it *should* put you right into the iTunes main menu.

Hope this helps.

well, what did you DO!?

Posted by: blakravhen

Yes did all of that Scargo, did it over and over and still nothing, the only program that actually installed and ran fine was DAP, but I can't get it to work again, I remember DAP read all my MP3 files automatically from both the phone and the TF.

The thing is that when I installed the Jad it didn't have anything checked, i rebooted, then i checked corelet and rebooted again and this "corrupted files" crap would pop up, this is with all programs, now if I install them and just ran the program they seem to initialize and run fine, but they just won't find my song files, then I tried installing them and only clicking flip and signed, rebooted and nothing, I've reformatted my card, uninstalled the programs, re-installed them in different ways, corelet/signed/flip were checked, unchecked just to see if one of those times it would run but nothing ...

What if I was to purchase another phone and just copy/paste all the folders, would that work? maybe I'll go for the V3x this time

Maybe your firmware is corrupt on there...I couldn't get iTunes to work with my DCR_RB flash, went back to DAR_RB and it worked, then re-flashed DCR_RB and now it works...maybe something's just off in your phone. Are there any available firmwares out there you could flash your phone with (and get a clean slate/start)?

Posted by: blakravhen

went to planetmotoxand downloaded this :

Monster Pack iTunes
S/W Version R47A_G_08.D8.35R.sbf
Flex Version: GSPSLQAT677DY061
Bootloader: BOOTA30
Language Pack: 0034
VST: 0003
Stock/Unlocked
iTunes Superfile for the iTunes supported platform only!!!
[12.6mb]

looked all over the site for some sort of help or information as to how to install/run MP for iTunes but there isn't anything, so in the meanwhile its just sitting there in a little folder til I figure out how to, would this re-install my Itunes?

That's the only thing that I'm having a problem with, other then that I'm extremely happy with my phone, best phone I've ever had, I just have to learn to SAVE files before messing around lol

I second that. I tried to get a few of the files from www.motosource.org, but no luck, the server is down. Anyone else have them???

Posted by: j0nb

i had to move servers, and get a new domain going.

I will re-post the files very soon.

Posted by: j0nb

all 4 skins has now been post on motosource.org, enjoy!

Posted by: Mechinyun

Hey Jon, looks like motosource.org still doesnt work

Posted by: jshayden

motosource.org still appears to be down. If someone would email me the files, I will host them until it comes back up.

Josh

Posted by: soccerjohn

Can anyone confirm that this will work for the E398. If not then I guess I'll be the guinea pig.

Posted by: j0nb

guys my website was never down. There seems to be a problem with the dns server for some people. IF you are not able to log onto my website, please email me at jonp(at)shaw.ca with your location. I'm gonna try to figure out where the problem is.

A change in DNS can take a while to propagate through to all the DNS servers around the globe, so that's prolly why some people can get to your new site and others cannot. Some DNS servers can be kinda pokey to update their records.

If you don't mind, you could give the actual IP address of your new site and people should be able to get to it that way until the DNS server records have been updated, but that's up to you, of course.

Posted by: brok3ball3r

i cant get on the host site either? any suggestions?

Posted by: alahstar

ok guys. i know the links give are down. so here's a little something. hope it stays up. if u got trouble message me and i'll e-mail them to you http://rapidshare.de/files/16484828/WINAMP.rar.html

Posted by: jshayden

Thanks,
Josh

Hello i from Russia and i not understand you can run itunes on Motorola v635 or not? If you can do this please read me how yoy do this and give me link for normal itunes

Posted by: soccerjohn

right now iTunes won't work for V635. Hes going to work on one that will, I think.

Posted by: Alex100

Thank that you answer what really well mp3 player you can say me for v635

Posted by: hytran

iTunes is a bit off-topic in this thread, I'd say. iTunes will not work on a V635 until someone comes up with a way to install corelets on that phone. And I hightly doubt that anyone will as the firmware doesn't appear to know about corelets, whereas, let's say, a V360 (a newer phone) does.

That said, the Digital Audio Player that comes on the V635 works just fine. Or you can install the same software with a different skin called mTunes (search for it). Or you can wait until j0nb gets back into the swing of things and we can all test his LightPlayer version for the V635. The current version gives an application error.

Posted by: motopilot13

can the winamp lite be hiden so that i can access phonebook or messageing while mp3 is playing?i heard that i tunes can do that.

Posted by: richardsayzz

i've been searching aroud and can't find this light player...anyone have a link for this software...also does it have the search feature like in PC winamps with the key "j"....that would be a nice feature...

Posted by: j0nb

available on my site, www.mobilesource.ca

Posted by: mifune_trail

Hey huys I actually have an LG phone and tried installing it. It didn't work so well... DUH! and the keys went all weird and stuff. Well that doesn't really matter. I was just wondering whether is it possible to enable a mobile phone which CANNOT play OGG Vorbis files PLAY OGG files via this WINAMP program. It will be sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cool if it can. Is it possible to insert codecs into this MIDLET?

Posted by: milerand

I am total noob, But I read the whole thread and can figure stuff out. I have a cingular (locked) l7. The only mod I do is put my own games on it. this is important.
I loaded winamp with MIDWAY as a java app after I made the JAD. If you dont know how to do this do a search they are easy to find. I reformated the TFcard with the phone, I got the latest version of MMM connected it and was patient enough to wait for the program to recognize the phone. It took like 1 1/2 minutes but then worked fine. I followed the instructions from the Original Post so the winamp could read the card. everything was cool to this point but it would not read the AUDIO FOLDER. If you drag and drop a lot of files a sub folder is created. Winamp cant read through a sub folder. So i put the songs right in the AUDIO FOLDER and SNAP. it works awesome. I left iTunes alone as if I dont bother it it souldnt bother me. So now I have drag and drop dirctly to the TFcard. I dont know if the 100 song limit is still in effect as I only put about 50 on there so far and it takes about 10sec per song.
hope this helps somebody. it is worth it

does anyone have a picture of a L7 runing the wimap?

Posted by: Shirohagen

OK so I've got the moto4lin prgram working (even though it seems pretty unstable and interferes with my mouse/trackpad control while the phone is plugged in) and I've used it to upload some skins with varying success.

How do you upload java files? The upload button on the kjava screen is grayed out even though my phone is connected, so I can't choose the local.jar files I want to send up....

Has anyone successfully uploaded java games etc to the V3i using moto4lin? What might I be doing wrong?

Posted by: my merc 4

hmm so i have the program installed on my v3i, but i can't seem to figure out to add songs. it doesn't see any mp3's in the audio folder. i even did the enable all command still getting nothing

Posted by: chasefreak

so does this work on a v3i
pls let me know

Posted by: serpico7100t

I installed motoTunes and created a Playlist#2 on my V3i (Playlist#1 was created and transferred via iTunes). The transfer of Playlist#2, which was ~30mb, took only 4 minutes, a much faster transfer rate than I was getting with iTunes (both transfers are to the phone, not a card reader, so I'm limited to USB 1.1).

OK, now the bad news: after disconnecting the phone and starting iTunes on the phone, Playlist#2 shows up, but I cannot see any songs within the playlist.

When I launch iTunes on my PC, I get "iTunes cannot read the contents of the mobile phone Razr V3i".

Also, sounds player can and play the songs in Playlist#2, but cannot see the songs in Playlist#1.

Suggestions?

omg this is a long thread !_!
ive got the slvr
ive managed to get games and ringtones working rather easily
my os is ubuntu dapper
to get those to work im just uploading via usb cable to folder on card while in phone: ringtones for that and kjava for those.. key is to just tell phone to switch devices
but getting audio stuff working nicely is a little harder.... regular audio that is
i cant seem to get yalls lightplayer/winamp/itunes thing going at all !!
now given ive had this thing all of a few hours .. im a little impatieint i know... and ill be reading back along this thread....
but!
is there an easy way to take out itunes?
if i have the razr motorola disk can i use that to rip out the thing in this?
ive seen talk about on reflashing phone to use motorola stock mp3 player which is great by me.. ive a large collection.. ive no intentions of giving apple another dime :P go go cdroms?
meh
anyway a nudge in the right direction might be nice.....
btw
tried changing directories or rather adding directories for the apps for this thread.. no go.. prolly they just dont work eh :/
o yeah
and how can i tell what version slvr i have?
[cingular+itunes-got today so prlly v7? ]
thanx in advance for any help

Posted by: kms-lai

if you have itunes on your phone, you need to use itunes on your PC to transfer songs.
I can never get light player to work, you can always use the DAP player, if you dont have it, you can find it on this forums with a little search.

Posted by: starscalling

DAP player? i still dont get what that is.. sorry :/

Posted by: kms-lai

it's motorola's very own java music player, very similar to light player

Posted by: jaysexy212005

how do i install these players in motorola razr v3i?

Posted by: starscalling

on my l7:
when i go to My Stuff > Music i can see the stuff i put in the card via usb
and folders in card/music/ seem to be counted as catigories
figured that card is /b/music/
and i can get the phone to play most of the files i just toss in there.....
i take it the DAP player is something different though......

Posted by: starscalling

mm also///
has anyone tried making a symlink or binding folders from linux >??

Posted by: djneo

this is all too heavy on me..im in two minds ..3 rather, wether to instal 1.light player 2.itunes or stict to d ole conventional motorola DAP for da heap of music i got!!
ne suggestions?

Posted by: keiri

Install iTunes (1000 song hack) then use motoTunes to transfer the songs to your phone.

Done.

Well the interface is amazing, but how you go backward and forward? and It could be hide? I mean just like Itunes (One that I hate )

not trying to sound ungrateful, cause this program seems awesome, and i would love to use it. but...

at least 10 people have asked if this even WORKS with the e398.
and NOBODY has answered that simple question.

every single "i cant connect to my slvr" and "my folders arent being found" question is addressed, but the fact that we e398 users are getting an 'application error' message doesnt seem to deserve any attention.

PLEASE, anyone who has solved this, or simply knows if this will or won't work, please let us know. (reading through 19 pages is alittle frustrating when theres no answer to the multiple questions asked)
thanks

You need this step to DAP search for your mp3 folders:
- after it has finished installing, Winamp Mobile should be on the list, right click on Winamp Mobile, select "Access" -> "Enable" Note: this gives winamp mobile access to the tflash and internal memory.

Now the player should work fine in e398!. Try it you wont loose anything

If i install this on my SLVR, will it transmit my music via bluetooth? to my headset?

Posted by: SiR_gPm

there is no way you can play your music via bletooth since this is a hardware related!

Hi this works in a nice way. Love the way instruction being given.
Small Correction in the 5th Line " change the language" instead of "4th " it is the "Fifth TAB"
Second "If it is not shown "Connected" then the computer send a messege "New Hardware found". Please remeber that Driver files are in the directory named as "P2K Driver".

After finally finding a way to get Light Player to work on SLVR L7, i decided to build a winamp mobile skin for the Lightplayer. The good thing about this is that i built the skin right into the jar, so if you install this you will automatically be using the winamp mobile skin.

To Install:
- first download Winamp Mobile 1.0 (LightPlayer) and Moto MIDlets Manager v0.22
- unzip motomidman, and open MotoMidMan.exe
- unzip Winamp Mobile 1.0.zip into a temp dir (Ex. C:\Temp\)
- plug in your SLVR L7, and you should see bottom left "Connected"
- if motomidman is showing in russian language, click on the 4th tab, and change the top drop down menu to "English"
- after you have connected your phone to motomidman, click on "Phone memory" tab
- click on "Install" -> "JAR File..." and select the unzipped "Winamp Mobile.jar"
- after it has finished installing, Winamp Mobile should be on the list, right click on Winamp Mobile, select "Access" -> "Enable" Note: this gives winamp mobile access to the tflash and internal memory.
- now click on Restart, and you should see Winamp Mobile installed.

Any problems let me know, will be releasing another LightPlayer skin soon, working on a Itunes theme.

Hello. I have a problem with Winamp mobile on my Motorola V360. I can install it, it starts, no problem, but i can't add files in the list. It seems that it does not find the MC. Could it be because i installed it on the memory card and not in the tel memory? Pls help

1. go to mmm and right click on that app and give it full access
2. in the app add the exact folder your songs are in... /b/mobile/audio by default for regular system use/play for stuff on the tf

download iTunes Mobile v1.2 (LightPlayer)

if you want, you can run both winamp/itunes on your phone at same time, it will not conflict each other.
