Nokia 6101 (non-OEM) CA-42 cable problems! HELP!

Hello,

I just bought a Nokia 6101 phone and I am pretty please with it so far. I decided to buy a CA-42 data cable for it off of eBay. It arrived today but I have not gotten it to work yet. I know it's not "Nokia brand" but it still should work. It came with a CD for installation.

I have windows xp sp2.

I plugged in the phone first. (maybe this was wrong?)
Then I ran the installations, everything was installed (PC suite, driver, etc.)
Then I clicked on:
'Found New Hardware
USB Serial Controller C'
Then I follow the new hardware wizard, but it says cannot find necessary software (searched CD and harddrive)

What am I doing wrong!? I have tried almost everything but nothing works. I even uninstalled and reinstalled but nothing.

Can someone please help me!?

Regards,

blazen101,

It sounds like you are not having the right driver AND it does not sound like you are having the ORIGINAL Nokia CA-42. Recently, some fellow members have got the aftermarket / knock-off CA-42 with the Texas Instrument TUSB3410 RS-232/IR-to-USB converter inside...

IF the driver for the TI chip is not compatible with your version of CA-42 or it has the Microchip PIC12C508A microcontroller and the Prolific PL2303 USB-to-Serial bridge controller inside, Google the driver with the different keywords.

In the past, I have compared the differences among the ORIGINAL and the aftermarket / knock-off data cables. They work in quite different ways...

Three things:
First - I'd say that the non-Nokia branded cable could be a big mistake. Oh sure you can do as HC and others here say and really dig and fight with the software, drivers and search trying to figure out which chip is installed in the cheap Ebay cable. My advise is to just buy a Nokia branded CA-42 cable.

Second -what are you trying to connect the phone to? The Nokia PC Suite software is free from Nokia and will connect the handset to your computer so that you can make backups, install ringers, wallpaper, themes, etc. You're not really saying what you're trying to do, or what's going on, when you say "have not gotten it to work yet". Work how? Work on what?

Third - (for later on when you get the software to connect) it is advised to install the cable driver first. Shut down, re-start - then install Nokia PC Suite. I made that mistake the first time and had to completely un-install everything and start over.

Hope this helps.

steveschbr,

Do not get me wrong... In fact, I recommend ORIGINAL Nokia data cables from the beginning! Finding the driver that can work is one thing but it may NOT work as the same as the ORINGINAL!

I have opportunity to disscet the cables and see what exactly inside. I also observe and compare how different cables interact with the computers... http://65.254.44.186/showthread.php?t=717691

Once again, many aftermarket CA-42 as well as the ORIGINAL DKU-5 are having the limited UART speed at 115200bps while the ORIGINAL CA-42 can go beyond that (at 230400bps) with the 1x or EDGE handsets. Of course, you may argue in the real world envrionment, the connections are still like 56K dail-up modem.

I consider the major advantage is about the stability and reliability. With the ORIGINAL CA-42, the clumsy driver / emulation will not be there. It is also truely hot plug-n-play, rather than messing with the COM port. You know, when make changes to the COM port in the computer, (e.g. changing COM port #) it may require reboot. Not the case with the ORIGINAL CA-42.

Anyway, there are many crooks selling aftermarket / knock-off cable as "ORIGINAL"! Sometimes, they copy the exact packages of Nokia (especially those in Asia-Pacific market) except you will not find the Nokia registered trademark. I have bought one CA-42 at a Nokia Professional Store in Hong Kong and it is impossible to get scam there. However, the packaging just looks very like those aftermarket / knock-off on eBay or elsewhere!

HC - no offense intended. I think what you are doing here is very helpful and insightful!

I was just trying to warn him (and others) of the potentially GIANT pain the *** this feature can be with the wrong - or conterfiet - parts. I know that the very last thing I want to do is kill hours trying to figure out how to get my $35 in savings to work on my handset!! Just not worth it to me.

steveschbr,

E X A C T L Y ! I have got burnt before, so I know what you mean. I have also help out fellow members here to look for the right driver for their cables... In the end, it would never work like mine.

I think DKU-2 (or perhaps the newer CA-53) would be the only exception that okay to go with aftermarket / knock-pff solution as it is simply straight Pop-port to USB cable without any chips inside like CA-42 (or the older DKU-5). Otherwise, as I have mentioned before, it is very critical if one who want the cable for doing wireless data connection (i.e EDGE or 1x).

Hey guys,

I just want to say thanks for reading my thread and actually taking the time to respond. I really do appreciate all your input.

HC, thanks for the detailed information. I downloaded the TUSB3410 driver and installed it but I don't think it is the right driver. My Hardware Wizard still cannot find the driver/software for my CA-42 cable even when I point to its location. The driver that came with it (on a CD) comes up as the 'CA-42 USB Serial Driver' but the wizard does not recognize it, so I'm guessing its a dud.

Steve, thanks for trying to understand my problem too. I will definitaly purchase the original Nokia CA-42 cable if I can't get this to work. I just want to try everything possible first. To answer your question, yes, I'm trying transer files to and from my cell phone through Nokia PC Suite.

The problem is that PC suite is not recognizing that my cell phone and cable are connected. Windows is recognizing the cable but can't find the proper driver/software for it. So I'm assuming until it can find the right driver/software, it won't be recognized my Nokia PC Suite or even function at all.

Additional Info
-------------------
This is the cable I purchased:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...item=5855625021

Under Device Manager the cable shows up as:
'+Other Devices
-USD-Serial Controller C'

On the CA-42 cable is says:
MODEL CA-42
S/N WT048000317

Is there a way to find out which exact driver I need for the cable?

Any additional input and/or help would be great and truly, very much appreciated.

Regards,

Then try what he has suggested... "IF the driver for the TI chip is not compatible with your version of CA-42 or it has the Microchip PIC12C508A microcontroller and the Prolific PL2303 USB-to-Serial bridge controller inside, Google the driver with the different keywords."

* Uninstall everything

*D/L the 6101 PC suite from the Nokia site

* After installing, connect the phone.

i stupidly bought this cable too.. "CA-42" with s/n WT048000317 from what I can tell it uses ArkMicro UART ark3116 chipset.. and there only seems to be linux drivers for it

I found drivers for the cable, which is also sold as a dk-5 cable, KQ-U8A cable, and various other cables for tons of different phone manufacturers, so hopefully this will help some one:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=13JA6IXI

or download the ark 3116 driver from: http://www.citronid.com/download.asp

unfortunately it looks like my phone simply doesn't support the data cables as it says "enhancement not supported" and there's no settings for a data enhancement in the enhancement settings area. guess i need to go get a IR dongle instead
