Verizon Treo 650 Bluetooth? Forget it.

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

After buying and returning six different bluetooth headsets that others have recommended on various forums and websites, I have given up. The Verizon version of the Treo 650 just doesn't do bluetooth headsets well. I even tried the Treo Bluetooth headset.
This is why some Treo 650 users are happy with their headsets and others aren't. There is some difference between the Verizon Treo and the others.

Palm tech support says to hard reset my Treo to solve the problem. Hasn't anyone else reported this problem? They don't seem to know that anything's wrong.

Please, If you have a Verizon Treo 650, and you know what I'm talking about, send an email to support@palm.com and tell them about it.

My Treo 650 is now 11 days old and I still have the option to return it. I love everything else about it. Maybe I'll just use a wired headset and hope that Palm will address this issue.

What problem are you having? The Treo can't voice dial from the headset at all, that's a factor for ALL Treos - but what you can do is get a headset that has a built in voicetag system.

well mine is not the verizon.... mine is the rogers treo 650.. and i have the motorola h500.. so far no problems.. best one i've had... only concern i do have.. is the sound volume is a lil low though...

Posted by: hsattin

The Verizon Treo does not produce enough volume with Bluetooth headsets.
...and the mute trick does nothing with Verizon Treos. The outgoing sound isn't as good as the others either. Now I have to pay another restocking fee to return another headset. At least the Verizon store didn't charge this fee when I returned their headsets that I tried. Palm should have also fixed the volume problem with their handsets also so we all wouldn't have to buy and run VolumeCare. Other than that, my Treo has worked fine. Strange how the Treo 650 acts differently depending on which carrier we choose.

sound is a BIG issue for me, I have it on Verizon and bought one MOTO BT headset and couldn't ever hear anything so I got rid of it and dont use anything.

Posted by: hsattin

Mike, you have the right idea. Don't bother trying other headsets either.

Posted by: Jivs

i don't know if this will in fact fix your problem with sound, or if you've already tried this...but have you tried the program Volumecare. I installed it (althought I have not tried it with a bt headset) and it increased the volume on my headset and everything else including speakerphone greatly. Try the demo out and see if that works first.

Posted by: hsattin

VolumeCare works great for the handset Jivs, but does nothing for the Bluetooth headsets.
I am now working through this with Palm Tech Support with a series of fruitless emails. Now they tell me to install the Verizon Treo 1.04 update, Version 1.04a is already on my new version B Treo.
If all Verizon Treo 650 users would complain then they might just see that there is a problem.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Now Palm is telling me to do a Zero Out Reset to restore the Treo to its "factory fresh" state. They need a slap upside the head!

Posted by: Croix9602

<--Has the Treo branded headset. Has no problems. Loves it.

Posted by: Jivs

I remember a problem with my palm zire 71...i called palm and they didn't really help me..in fact they confused me!
but strangly, i created a thread in this forum and someone from palm wrote in and told me what i needed to do!
hopefully the same will happen here!

I have the same issues the OP has. I just got my treo yesterday. I had a moto e815 with hs850 headset which worked perfectly together. With the Treo the HS850 pairs perfectly, but it doesnt work. If I open the boom the phone responds but you cant hear anything in it. I have to talk on the handset.

Posted by: hsattin

I asked Verizon if they knew about this problem and/or if they possibly had a fix for it.
They replied:

"I apologize for any inconvenience this may present; however, for security purposes, it is not possible to release the requested proprietary information regarding the release of new equipment and accessories. However, more Bluetooth technology may become available in the future."

Like their sig:

"We never stop working for you!"

Wirelessly posted (Treo650: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; PalmSource/hspr-H102; Blazer/4.0) 16;320x320)

It has been my experience that when you are dealing with proprietary, stick with proprietary. In other words, use the Palm headset (which is a Jabra, if I'm not mistakn) with the Treo. My wife uses my old Moto headset with her a950, and has no issues, but with my Treo that beautiful headset is worthless.

However, as I said earlier, I hae the treo headset and have no issues.

im also having problems with my 650. i dont use a headset but my car has bluetooth. there is always stattic, the person on the other line can barely hear me and sometimes when i get in the car it doesnt even connect. now the reason i know that its a 650 issue is because it worked perfect with my moto e815. does anyone know if this issue has been fixed on the 700w along with the dropped calls issue?

I have the Treo 650 from Sprint and the Plantronics 640 bluetooth headset. It's lousy. I can't go more than 2-3 ft from the headset before static interference sets in. Other head sets as well. I think the Treo bluetooth signal isn't very strong.

After searching online for anyone that is happy with any Bluetooh headset for the Verizon Treo, I ordered the Plantronics 640 yesterday. After trying headsets that others have raved about online, I now know that all online reviews are not a reliable source. Many reviews I have read are in fact written by people who have not even held the product in their hands. Do we trust the opinions and reviews of someone who is selling the product? Finding an independent honest opinion of someone who actually uses the item with the Verizon Treo 650 isn't easy. I don't care about voice dialing or music listening. All I want is a bluetooth headset that fits and genuinely works well with my phone while the phone sits in its case on my belt.

By the way, where within the Treo is the Bluetooth antenna? Has anyone messed with it yet?

This site has thorough reviews of bluetooth headsets as well as smartphones. The reviews are excellent. http://www.barjohn.com/

Great link Cellheader. Thanks for sharing.

For my last try I ordered a Plantronics Discovery 640 for my Verizon Treo 650.

It's Loud! I've finally found one that's loud! Not only that, it's comfortable, light and doesn't flop around. I now have to put it to a real life test.

It's a known fact that bluetooth implementation (driver?) in the treo650 is plain suck period

Posted by: cellheader

Not well known enough apparantly as Treo has yet to provide a firmware update to rectify the issue.

It's possible to reflash a VZW Treo with the firwmare from another CDMA one. You have to use Tokenwriter to change the carrier variable inside your phone, and then reflash and enter the correct data settings. Everything you need is on shadowmite.com and palm.com (the flashs are here).

I use a Treo 650 Cingular branded (unlock). I've used the Treo branded BT headset. It just has a mind of his own, it connects whenever it feels like it. You can never rely on it to receive or make a call. the sound quality is so so. So I finally gave up and threw it in the garbage were it deserves to be!

I think the 650 has alot of problem with BT headsets, and Palm knows about it but they simply ignore the issues. The 650 will soon be phased out, therefore they will not pay much attention to it, and spend more money trying to resolve and old issue. So we have the option of switching to the new700 (be it CDMA or GSM) and hope that it works well with any BT headsets.

I also read all the forums review on BT headsets for the Treo 650, none of them are reliable in my opinion.

So, I will just use my wired headset that was originally in the box, and I suggest save your money and time, it is simply not worthed.

Just my 2 cents.

It isn't necessarily the headsets that are unreliable, it's the Treo's weak BT signal that lays at the heart of the problem.

Regarding your statement that "the 650 will soon be phased out," what is your documentation? The fact that the 700 was released does not imply that the 650 is going away soon. Someday, yes, it will go away. Soon? No.

IMO the Bluetooth in the Treo 650 is its only weakness. The implimentation is just flat out horrible. Mine does not like to stay connected and I have tried about 5 headsets with it. I hope that the next treo has better implimentation. Has anyone had the same problems with their 700w?

u tried the moto h500 yet?... it has not disconnected on it yet.. except when it runs out of batt.. but so far the best one i have tried... alot more comfortable than the hs850 i had too...

I have tried several BT headsets before finally purchasing a treo wireless headset from Buy.com for $55 about a week ago.

Has worked perfectly so far.
