FAQ1: Nokia Data / Connectivity Cables DKU-2 DKU-5 CA-42 CA-53

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: HC - NO "i"

Folks,

Recently, there are many fellow members asking about the Data Cables for their Nokia. Well, I ask the moderator HF 25 to help me with this sticky thread.

Before we go on, the data cables we discuss here are ONLY for the Nokia handset models with Pop-port. If you are using some models that require special cable go underneath the battery silo or connector looks nothing like Pop-port, those are not covered here!

1. How different are they?

First, look at the pictures...

DKU-2: It is straight Pop-port to USB cable. It does not appear to have microcontroller or USB-serial bridge inside the cable. The cable connectors are in Black color.

CA-53: It is replacing the DKU-2, both are electrically identical but CA-53 is RoHS compliant without any hazardous material in manufacturing (more on this later). The cable connectors are in Gray color.

CA-42: It is replacing the DKU-5 for most newer compatible handsets. It eliminates the software emulation but doing the Pop-port to USB conversion right at chip inside the cable. No more virtual COM port will be installed and - which is totally different from DKU-5. It behaves more like a true plug-n-play when a handset is attached. Speed can go beyond the DKU-5's 115200bps limitation (at 230400bps). The cable connectors are in Blue color and the USB side is about 7cm in length, which is longer than DKU-2 or CA-53.

DKU-5: It is the older design with serial port emulation and there is a speed limit at 115200bps. NOT a good idea for today's high speed packet data connection. It is also very clumsy with the driver. The cable connectors are in Black color and the USB side is about 7cm in length, which is longer than DKU-2 or CA-53. Please note: the current version of Nokia PC Suite NO LONGER supports DKU-5.

For more detailed discussion, please check out http:///www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=717691

2. So which cable is the one for my Nokia?

http://www.europe.nokia.com/nokia/0,,79898,00.html
http://www.nokiausa.com/A4494180

NOTE: there maybe still discrepancies in the above sites but the general rule of thumb... CA-42 supersedes DKU-5 while CA-53 supersedes DKU-2. Just newer cables are NOT necessarily backward compatible with older handset models.

3. Where can I find the ORIGINAL drivers of cables?

It comes with the CD in the package. However, you can check with Nokia for the current versions as well.

http://www.europe.nokia.com/nokia/0,8764,81912,00.html

4. Is it possible to use DKU-2 / DKU-5 / CA-42 / CA-53 to charge the phones?

NO, those cable are strictly for data connection. Unlike some charging stands or music stands, those cables DO NOT have the pins for charging the handset via Pop-port.

5. How come the connector does not seems to fit the phone / too tight?

The Pop-port is designed as is. Do not be afraid you will break it, just make sure the Nokia or the "arrow" logo facing you like the second picture shown above, align with your handset's Pop-port connector. Then push it in. That is it. When you disconnect the cable, just pull it out.

6. The ORIGINAL CA-42 / DKU-5 cables are quite expensive and hard to get elsewhere but Nokia itself. So is it the same to get one on eBay or my neighbourhood phone dealer? It save me half of the cost!

Well, even if you just use the cables for transferring ringtones / wallpapers / themes / images / music files and not requiring high-speed wireless packet data connection, sometimes, it is still NOT worth the trouble. Why? Read the frustrated stories from our fellow members...

... there are more if you S E A R C H here in HoFo and beyond!

Many aftermarket / knock-off CA-42 cables, in particular, are just aftermarket / knock-off DKU-5 with the different look and packaging! Many of them are still using Microchip PIC12C508A microcontroller and the Prolific PL2303 USB-to-Serial bridge controller to mimic the original DKU-5 (NOT even close to a CA-42). There are also some cables are using the Texas Instrument TUSB3410 RS-232/IR-to-USB converter while some others aer using ArkMicro ARK3116T USB-to-UART Controller (Thanks to frantik for the tips in http://www.howardforums.com/showpos...61&postcount=47). The outcome is these alternative designs make the cable behave DIFFERENT from the original CA-42, so incompatibility / unstable issues may arise. Without the secretive Nokia firmware, it is very different to follow how the REAL CA-42 works.

Sure, most of them comes with the "drivers" on the CD-ROM. However, there are also many of them on the same CD-ROM! It is like a compilation of drivers for different brands / models. Try one by one may still not recognized properly by your computer. Try to find the drivers at http://www.citronid.com/download.asp or Google the keywords of the chips mentioned above (or the read the resource table / Hardware ID when detected by your computer) may yield some success to get the right driver.

So the decision is yours... To save your precious time and efforts or to save some money? To me, time is money - even for a hobbyist / enthusiast / Nokia-freak like me

7. Is there any other alternatives that can save some money and hassles then?

Well, it depends on your Nokia... If it comes with IR or Bluetooth connection capabilities, then getting a IR or Bluetooth dongle may be better served in your situation and beyond.

8. What about the DKU-2 or CA-53? It sounds very straight-forward as Pop-port to USB connection. So is it okay to grab the aftermarket ones then?

Maybe. The thing is that many Nokia models that use the DKU-2 have got one inside the box when you get the handset! And, I have seen some large carriers even packed the Nokia boxes with an aftermarket / knock-off DKU-2! (Well, I do have an original one though from a 6230b but last time, when I bought a Nokia 6230i at CSL/0101 shop in Hong Kong, it cames with an aftermarket / knock-off cable ) Since the DKU-2 does not appear to install driver for anything more than the phone itself, I give the aftermarket / knock-off cables a little benefit of the doubt in this circumstance.

Now, about the CA-53, some Nokia models that use the CA-53 have got one inside the box when you get the handset too. I have yet to dissect, determine or compare the difference / significance between the ORIGINAL and aftermarket / knock-off ones. All I understand, it officially has reference of USB2.0 compliant. But you know, USB2.0 architecture uses the same cables and connectors as USB1.1 compliant products! Just that DKU-2 has never claimed to be USB2.0 compliant. It could be just the material of the cable (i.e. better shielding, the strands of cable, etc.)

*UPDATES regarding the differences between DKU-2 and CA-53: Fellow member, AirTango has a tip from the source at Nokia... the CA-53 is basically working in the same way like the DKU-2. So they are electrically identical but the material it uses, would meet the RoHS directive / material safety standard in EU (for more information, please refer to http://www.rohs.gov.uk/ ).

Meanwhile, fellow member, 'LilRedDog has claimed about the great experience with the CA-53 and suggested it does make a difference from the DKU-2 when doing wireless data connection with the compatible handset:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=891041

9. Are you an engineer or working for Nokia? Why should I believe in you?

No, I am not an engineer in the field and I am not working for Nokia. However, as I have mentioned before, I am a cellphone enthusiast / Nokia freak! More importantly, I have burnt by the aftermarket / knock-off cables before and have wasted my time and money on something totally avoidable. So believe in me or not, it is all up to you. No hard feeling and wish that I can offer help.

--

In summary, I still recommend you to consider the ORIGINAL data cable - especially when doing high-speed wireless packet data connection and you do not have Bluetooth access. The stability, reliability is sometimes worth for the price.

I am having trouble conecting my Nokia 3220 to my PC with my DKU-5 (I didn't get any drivers or CDs with it. I have tryed downloading every driver on Nokias website but it still doesn't recognized the phone is their all I have in Device Manageer is it shows up under Other device as USB Device and no drivers. Can someone help me

steve

Posted by: HC - NO "i"

firemanstevesmi,

Greetings. It is almost certain that you are NOT having an ORIGINAL Nokia cable and therefore the Nokia driver will NOT work with your aftermarket / knock-off cable! Try Google with the keywords, TUSB3410 and Prolific PL2303 drivers.

Again, your story is very common.

Posted by: Gonwee

I'm pretty sure i have an original DKU-2 cable. And it doesn't work with PC Suite. I've tried the cable drivers and diffrent version of the PC Suite software.

Posted by: HC - NO "i"

Gonwee,

If you are using the 3220, the DKU-2 is NOT the right cable - DKU-5 or CA-42 (recommended) rather! BTW, as I have mentioned above: Check the corresponding cable for your model at Nokia sites... http://www.nokiausa.com/support/pcs...your_phone.html

Posted by: lazyaznboi

I'm also pretty sure I have the real cable, only I have the CA-42, which I'm pretty sure is the right one for my phone, which is the 3220. Anyway, I installed the drivers, installed the PC Suite, and made a back up with it, and that worked fine. The problem is, everything else doesn't work. Well, that is, everything else I've tried. I've tried doing a file transfer, store images, and create a wallpaper, and none of them have worked.

For the file transfer, it gives me an error when I first open it, saying that the operation couldn't be completed. Then I go to my phone and try to open the directory, and I get the same message, and there are no folders or files in it. So that just doesn't work at all.

For the store images, I select my phone, and the greyed out buttons (store now, settings) dont become solid, and I can't do anything.

For the create wallpapers, I can get the images all prepared, and then when I press update to phone, it says it fails to do it.

*Correction: I just tested the text message feature, and it works fine, but I didn't get the cable for that.

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Posted by: HC - NO "i"

lazyaznboi,

Sorry to hear your story. However, have you tried the 3rd party programs like I have suggested (e.g. MobiMB)? Also, where do you get your CA-42? Do not be so sure about the authenticity! There are so many crooks in this world... because I have seen them all the time.

Is there ANY cable/software combination, Nokia or aftermarket, that transfers data via Macintosh?

Gene B.

Posted by: NOKIA S60/N-SER

Ok somehow I got a fake ca-42 cable, I get the prolific usb device message. I found the driver and installed it ok. My computer and NPC now recognize the 6101 when I plug it in. I can transfer data but I cannot use the modem function (OTA). I cannot use my phone with my T-mobile EDGE/GPRS either. These all work fine with my S60 (N90 and 6260) phones on the true nokia CA-53 cable.

I found the stand alone modem driver from nokia, but I don't know where to install it. would this be the driver i need? I guess I'm asking does PC suite One Touch Access look for the driver for the phone or the driver for the cable? My cable driver should be ok, or maybe I am missing the modem driver portion for the cable. Anyone know where or how I should be installing the nokia 6101 modem driver

Posted by: NOKIA S60/N-SER

Ok, I got this generic CA-42 data cable to work all functions, even modem. And it wasn't even that difficult.

Uninstall all previous attempts first.

Leave cable unplugged

I had to install the driver for the cable, you have to find driver from manufacturer; Prolific usb, uses the PL2303 driver, the other Texas Instrument you have to use the TI-virtual serial port driver.

Install Nokia PC suite.

Plug in cable and phone to PC, wait.
It will first recognize the usb cable, then install the drivers, then it will recognize the phone then install the drivers for the phone. Does your pc recognize your phone?

To use EDGE/GPRS modem function, you have to download the modem only driver for your specific phone from Nokia website. Make sure you are downloading the .inf for the modem driver only, not the cable driver.

Right click, install modem driver.

After driver is installed automatically.

Go to control panel/Phone and modem/ select add. Choose Nokia, then find your phone. Click next, everything should be automatic. It should show a COM port your phone/modem is configured to. Click ok. You're done.

Now in PC suite, connect to the internet with OTA. You may have to select your phone from the drop down box.

One thing I found out is that the com port is set on the Usb port you configured it to. So to use your phone as a modem, you will always have to plug it into the same usb slot you installed your phone on.

Posted by: HC - NO "i"

NOKIA S60/N-SER,

Thanks for going on with tips for after-market / knock-off cables!

The reason why it is better off to use the very same USB port everytime is that, the way of how these data cables are installed in Windows. It creates a specific COM port, configuration for every incident, then the program settings, modem settings are set to work with it. If you plug it in another port the next time, everything will be changed!

There is a way that works for me: Force all hidden devices to show in the device manager and delete the items that no longer current. Also, in the Modem & Phones, delete all the previous detected ones and let to add it back again by itself.

I purchased a ca-53 from ebay since i just wanted to see if i could use pc suite to manage my contacts better and get the pictures off my phone to the pc.

I installed the drivers that came with it.. and then downloaded the latest verions of PC suite. But experiencing the following problems. I did contact nokia and they just suggested installing the latest version of pc suite.

it doesn't seem to recoginze the phone or sync I did notice that the usb data transfer is grayed out.. should it be once i installed the cable drivers.

It sometimes tells me to insert the a memory card, i have 4.01 mb available on the system info so not sure what that means, do i need a memory card to make this work?

Since I have infrared should i use a bluetooth instead, i've read the transfer rates are slow?

Thanks in advance for any help

I am a software developer looking to purchase a Nokia phone. I havn't found anybody complaining that they have trouble sending java games/apps to the phones over the standard cables.

My question is: Do all/most Nokia phones allow you to transfer games/apps across the standard cables? Is this dependant on the provider?

I have experience with other phones, and most are restricted by the phone carriers. With other brands it's easy to find people complaining and having to use BitPim and such to force apps onto the phones, but I don't see those complaints about Nokia's. I really need to be able to send apps to the phone with the cable, so I can avoid having to use the WAP browser and either paying for bandwidth, or paying for a subscription to a phone carrier.

Has anybody had trouble with certain models or carriers restricting game/app transfer at all? Will the Nokia PC software work on every Nokia, without having to worry about the carriers?

Also, since I'm paranoid about purchasing useless hardware, has anyone purchased specifically from Rogers in Canada, and been able to use the data cables for games/apps?

Thanks guys. If this isn't the right place to post, than let me know.

Cathe,

1. Try reliable 3rd programs like Mobius/PX and MobiMB instead of Nokia PC Suite in this case, you will be pleased with much more simple, user-friendly UI and powerful than PC Suite in certain categories.

2. Have you tried the latest Connectivity Driver from Nokia? Please check with the link I have mentioned at Nokia European / US site earlier. Using Bluetooht or IR is your preference. IR is not necessarily slow depending on how much / big the file transfer are going on.

hooble2,

Welcome to HoFo!

I do not believe it will be a big problem most GSM models because most GSM carriers are not locking down their offering models. However, the trend in North America is always toward "value-added" services. So I will not be surprised Rogers or other GSM carriers will follow most CDMA carriers have been doing since the beginning.

Carriers can ask Nokia to toggle some features in the firmware / PRI file like Assigning ringtones with DRM or in your intrest, installation apps / games / ringtones with PC Suite. If you have access to the service programs from Nokia (Phoenix and Diego), then you may find those item toggles.

However, there are other programs exceeding the limitation of Nokia PC Suite available like I have mentioned before. So it is not all impossible.

I have to ask the Nokia technical manager a little more about the cables. He told me that the only difference with the CA-53 vs the DKU-2 was that is was environmentally friendly. Meaning less or no lead in the the cable. I guess I will have to email him and get the straight 411.

AirTango,

Thanks for the new information, as I have suspected for the longest time there is little difference between the two cables. USB2.0 architecture uses the same cables and connectors as USB1.1 compliant products! I guess the EU regulations regarding the material safety for all gadgets must play a role here.

Good, I do not need to disect both to compare Now, I need to ask moderator to help me to update with this piece of news.

Posted by: AirTango

No Problem HC - NO "i". As soon as I get some more feedback from him I will post it.

Posted by: AirTango

He responded and said that it was the only difference.

hi NOKIA S60/N-SER ,

i ve followed ur instruction given in post #10. i have a nokia 3220 and a prolific CA-42 cable. i can transfer data between phone and PC. but i am unable to connect to internet. when installing nokia 3220 driver, at one stage it asks under which COM port should the modem be installed. i have a doubt there. my prolific cable is installed under COM5. and while installing nokia 3220 modem it asks whether i want to install it under COM1 or COM5. which port should be selected there?

i ve tried both. in both cases, i first use nokia connection manager to connected to the phone, which is successful. after that i go to Nokia PC Suite > Connect to internet > Connect. when i do this, the phone automatically get disconnected from the PC. and in the phone a message is displayed saying "Enhancement not supported".

Thanks.

I felt the need to post here after getting a generic DKU-5 USB cable working for my Nokia 3220. This will probably work for other Nokia phones as well. The prior post where another user got their data cable working was the only other source on the internet it seemed of a success. Here's the process:

1) If you haven't bought a cable yet, seriously consider the true Nokia brand cable - it will save you from a lot of headaches. If you are a technical expert with a lot of time on your hands, proceed though these directions.

2) Take your generic cable, but do not install the drivers. Uninstall all drivers and Nokia PC Suite if you installed them prior. Run Avast Antivirus on the driver disk that came with your generic cable - mine was infected with a trojan virus (eBay special) which led to unbelievable slowdown of the computer, and required a reinstallation of Windows...

3) Install the Prolific serial to usb driver (this assumes you have the Prolific chipset, as my cable does). This driver makes the USB cable you bought appear to programs as a serial cable, which the 3220 phone requires. The official Nokia cables for this device are serial cables: http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?ID=31

4) Install the DKU-5 driver. If everything goes smoothly, you should have the DKU-5 Connectivity Adaptor Cable listed under Ports in Window's Device Manager in the Control Panel: http://www.nokiausa.com/support/software/dku5/driver

4) Install the newest Nokia PC Suite for your phone model. Do not connect your phone to the cable until the installation program tells you to. Make sure the serial port is selected for its search. If it does not detect your phone, try another USB port. The installation program is USB port specific and requires you to always use the same USB port once installed. Your computer may slow to a halt during this process; if so, a reboot is required to free up the COM port: http://europe.nokia.com/A4144907

5) You should be able to do file transfers, backups, etc. of the phone now if everything installed correctly - the Nokia PC Suite should show a phone connected. If you have troubles with detection, try reinstalling the Prolific or DKU-5 drivers. Also, if the DKU-5 driver is in the control panel, you can change its COM port (Properties, Port Settings, Advanced) which may solve your problem.

6) GPRS Modem installation: if you have everything working to this point, proceed with this step. Go into Nokia PC Suite under Connection Manager. Uncheck the box next to the serial port (IMPORTANT). This disconnects the software from your phone. Go to the Control Panel and add a modem. Select it from a list - the Nokia phones should be available, which are installed by the prior programs. Select your phone, then it will ask for a COM port to install the modem on. Go the Device Manager in the Control Panel and note which COM port the DKU-5 is on. The modem must be installed on this COM port to work. After installation, you can go back into Nokia PC Suite and enable the serial port. Go to Connect to the Internet in Nokia PC Suite. Setup a connection for your service provider as the settings are different for each. Let the program dial and with any luck, you will have a working GPRS modem! (You may need to reboot first as Window's dial up networking and Nokia PC Suite conflict with one another, so only one method may be used or the system becomes unstable, rendering your modem unreachable.)

So hopefully a few of you will get your GPRS modems working with Nokia phones using my many hours of work for the above instructions. The instructions are from memory as well, so there may be a few spots where you need to do some of your own internet searching or apply your own technical knowledge to the problem.

I am writing you from my computer using the Nokia 3220 GPRS modem right now over my DKU-5 USB generic cable! It is possible. Good luck!

Posted by: HC - NO "i"

mslezak,

Thanks for helping out further, it is valuable for many fellow members.

However, as I have mentioned, while some knock-off / after-market DKU-5 / CA-42 are still using Microchip PIC12C508A microcontroller and the Prolific PL2303 USB-to-Serial bridge controller to mimic the original DKU-5 (NOT even close to a CA-42), there are also some cables are using the Texas Instrument TUSB3410 RS-232/IR-to-USB converter. So we have to dig deep in the hardware IDs in Device Manager to find out which chips they are really using.

is there a way for my nokia 8800 to connect to the computer?

Posted by: Moderator HF 25

You can use Bluetooth to connect 8800 with computers. However, the topic in this FAQ doesnt cover wireless data connection.

Posted by: zhukOZ

Hmm I also bought a generic CA-42 cable...can't get the supplied CD-driver to install. When the "Found new hardware" box pops up & click on it, a new box that says "Files needed: the file 'ser2pl.sys' on USB-Serial Cable Diskette is needed" appears even though the disc is in...just won't read that particular file I'm guessing...

Well. Serves me right for trying to save some $$ huh Genuine Nokia cables are $A70 here compared to $30 for the chinese fakes. meh. what can you do!

I'm going to get the nokia branded-cable. And that's uh, NOKIA. NOT "Nok"

Posted by: zhukOZ

Damn. The authentic Nokia cable doesn't work either

Unfortunately the Nokia support number is staffed in the Phillipines and no one there is any help..../sigh.

After 5 seperate guided attempts at uninstall PC suite/reinstall I am tending to think there may be something up with Nokia's site & and PC suite software/link.

Initially, it took 1 hr 45 mins to download PC suite (yeah I'm on dialup lol) but now it takes less than one second to do the same . One operator @ Nokia support thought that there might be something wrong with the site's software and/or the link, but all subsequent operators have denied this could be the case. The actual cable appears to be functioning OK...drivers installed automatically etc. It really seems to be the software...

All I want to do is get the damn photos off my phone....no downloading ringtones etc....nothing else

Posted by: tsk1979

Hi,
I searched these forums for DKU-2 connection with Nokia 6265 but things are not working out. I will explain the problem.
I connect my phone to the Laptop via DKU-2 cable, and the phone asks me whether I want to use in storage mode. I say yes and my SD card inside the phone shows up as a drive in the computer. I can transfer files etc., Via explorer.

If I say "no" then phone says "Data Enhancement connected". After that I can use windows XP to use my phone as a modem. It shows up in modems. I can dial to my service provider too to get internet access.
But PC Suite, well thats another story. It says no phones connected. I have installed latest drivers from Nokia website and have tried 6.7, 6.8 and 6.82 drivers, but with all of these I am unable to use PC Suite with my phone.
I doubt there is something wrong with the cable as its working just fine with Windows, its just the PC suite which is the problem.

I even tried the step by step approach
1. Disconnect data cable
2. Bring up PC suite
3, Click on get connected and select "cable connection"
4. It asks me to connect the phone
5. I connect the phone and when it asks wether to connect in storage mode, I say no
6. The phone flashes once "Data enhancement connected", but the PC suite keeps on waiting.
I tried synchronize and refresh etc., but nothing is working.
Any tips?

Posted by: HC - NO "i"

tsk1979,

Greetings and welcome to HoFo!

In PC Suite, goes to Manage Connections and check the box, USB (DKU-2, CA-53, DKE-2, CA-70).

Posted by: HC - NO "i"

zhukOZ,

Do not be so sure about the authenticity of a Nokia data cable! Seriously, I have seen SO MANY counterfeits looks EXACTLY like the authentic ones.

thats already done . I have tried all this.
There is maybe just one thing which could be the problem
My cable driver is 6.82 version, but PC suite is 6.8 version. So I guess I will upgrade PC suite too and then reboot the PC.
One question to all though, my phone flashes "Data enhancement mode" just once when I say no to "storage mode".

Bingo! Driver versions conflict is always on the list of troubleshooting. I suggest you to FIRST remove the PC Suite, then remove the data cable driver. Then reinstall JUST the PC Suite.

does the 6.82 PC Suite(downloaded from Nokia) contains cable driver?
In that case I will uninstall all and then install just the PC suite.
BTW is there any free third party program available to replace PC suite?

tsk1979,

The current version of PC Suite is certainly having the drivers that you need (and beyond, for all Nokia models). And, of course, there are other 3rd party applications like LogoManager Pro Suite and Oxygen Phone Manager II. I particularly like to use MobiMB of the Logo Manager Pro Suite because it is simple, straight-forward to transfer files (and powerful to "discover" more about my Nokia )

I tried synchronize and refresh etc., but nothing is working.
Any tips?

Exactly what I've been trying. With the same result....bar that storage mode you mention

Well I read the cable serial No. out the the Support Line & they said it was genuine....not that that necessarily means anything lol

So if it isn't in fact a real nokia....I sure got ripped @ $70

Are you being sarcastic or what? Others come to point out things you may overlook, that's all. Some crooks can counterfeit money too! So what's the challenge to copy the exact packaging, labels? Cost them a few more bucks at most but could sell at the price of a real one.

Try to run the PC Suite Cleaner: http://www.europe.nokia.com/A4144912

Posted by: zhukOZ

No I'm not being sarcastic; sorry if you thought I was. The generic cables are $30 compared to the $70 I paid for what was meant to be a genuine nokia product. That's all

I have also run the nokia cleaner more than 5 times following support line instructions...doesn't help things any further.

Hello. I have a nokia 3220 phone and a made in China CA-42 cable that I got new for $6.50, including shipping, from ebay. The cable didn’t work when I followed the regular directions (no phone could be seen when trying to connect with PC Suite version 6.82). When I spoke to a nokia tech person and followed all his instructions, the cable still didn’t work. He said it was because I didn’t have the official nokia cable.
But when I followed ap0003’s suggestion, found at: http://discussions.europe.nokia.com...=6424&jump=true I got the answer that I tried and works!
Ap0003 wrote: “Using that advice I went to Control Program, Add Or Remove Programs, selected PC Nokia Suite, selected Support Information, and selected Repair. Then I selected PC Connectivity. Selected PC Connectivity Solution, selected Change, and Selected Repair. After this when I ran PC Suite it recognised the connection, I could see the 6280 in the list of connected phones, and now I can backup the phone numbers, download photos. It can be made to work, so don't give up!!!”
So thanks to all you folks who help create these papertrails for us all to figure these tech things out

Hello,

For completeness you may wish to mention in the FAQ that there is another chipset used for the cheap ebay knockoff CA-42 cables. The chipset is "Ark 3116"

Once I found the correct drivers I have been able to access the memory card and other functions on my 6101 via Nokia's PC Suite. Haven't tried the more advanced features yet however

Posted by: Moderator HF 25

Thanks for the help. Please provide more detail info like the brandname of the chip and link to the driver, then I'll inform HC-no-i add it to the guide.

Posted by: frantik

The cable looks identical to the nokia brand cable ca-42 shown on the first page of this thread, only without the nokia branding. Label says

CA-42
S/N: WT048000317

The chipset is ArkMicro ARK3116

The driver provides a virtual serial port and is available here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=13JA6IXI
or here: http://www.citronid.com/download.asp

I used the drivers from the megaupload link so I can't confirm if the citronid.com drivers work.

It's not the best cable in the world.. so far it seems the only way I can get it to work is to reboot my computer while the phone is attatched. I have not been able to get it to reconnect once I disconnect it from the machine without rebooting. Also the phone will say "enhancement not supported" about 60% of the times I connect it. Disconnecting and reconnecting usually solves the problem though.

I should have spent my $8 on an IR dongle :\

Update: I figured out how to reconnect the cable without rebooting. You must go into the windows device manager and disable the device ('USB Data Cable' under ports) and then re-enable it.

hi i have a nokia 6165i cell phone and i recently purchased a USB cable (not from nokia but a knock off, from amazon, claiming that it works for my phone)

anyhow it came with a driver and with the PC suite, both were installed ok. also when i connect the usb cable to the phone my computer sees the new hardware, and the phone says it's connected...so everything looks fine, right.

however when i run the new hardware wizard, it cannot find the driver, and also when i open the pc suite, and you know how it starts telling you how to connect your phone...after the step to plug the cable into the phone it doesn't continue...the pc suite also doesn't show my phone connected and it is not in the list.

no matter how i try to add the hardware it says that my driver is not installed...but IT IS! i even point it to the folder!

i am about to go insane over here, can someone tell me what's going on and why it doesn't work???

BTW, the disk i got has the ca-53 driver on it

thanks!

Have you tried to get the current version of directly from Nokia? Read the first post for the link. But, you can also download the PC Suite comes w/ the current driver set once and of all at Nokia http://www.nokiausa.com/support/pcs....html?noflash=1 Uninstall yours and install the current one.

Posted by: szilvus

you're the best, it is connected and working!!!

one question though, how on earth do i store the pictures to the phone? Right now they are all stored to camera...but it looks like it has to be stored to the phone memory to be able to upload them to the computer.

looks like the pictures i take are stored by default to the camera and not the phone, how can i change that?

thanks soooo much!

When I connect my phone a nokia 6111 with a knockoff DKU - 2 cable a popup appears stating that a problem occured during hardware installation and the hardware may not work properly. It is obviously being recognized though or this would not even popup. Any ideas?

Hai all, nice to join this great forum

I've bought a CA-70 cable for my 6275i, so far I can use this cable for MobiMB & Diego without problem.

but I have a question, is "CA-70 = CA-53+Charger" or "CA-70 = CA-42+Charger" ?

I've searched using google about CA-70 but not found the answer

thanks

Posted by: TheMafioso

CA-70 is CA-53+Charger according to what i've been able to figure out from what i've been been reading on the net...
Let me know what kind of speed r u getting with CA-70, i hardly get around 6-7Mbps while transferring data from computer to phone..

What can I do about an arkmicro usb to uart problem? I have the CA-42 for nokia but it says it can't find a driver for it. I'm using vista.

Posted by: grafiky

Dear HC,

I have red a lot and i know you have long expirience with this problem. I'm informatic and i can tell you that i have tried a lot of things. But i can't install my CA-42 cable driver for my Nokia 6100...

I have used the five latest versions of PcSuite and Nokia cable driver, the original one, more that i find... but nothing.

Vista post this message:

-
This problem was caused by a compatibility issue between this version of Windows and ArkMicro USB to Serial Ports.
ArkMicro USB to Serial Ports was created by ArkMicro. -

I know that DKU-2, CA-53 y DKE-2 are like usb cable but that CA-42 is cable serie (serial port) so i think that Vista don't recognize the emulator of serial port buy usb (or something simiral). Because the "USB-UART Controller" is always in the Device Manager and i give it all the drivers of nokia and nothing.

Do you know any driver for USB-UART Controller that make the port recognize the drivers of Nokia?

I don´t know if you understand a little my problem.

Thank you because reading it.

Rafa

For vista there is a problem with the driver security issue that comes with the installer. Go to microsoft's page and download your driver for vista, the latest one and it should work fine.
