Kyocera Slider Remix questions

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Dreadite

Hi guys. Today I purchased the Kyocera Slider Remix through alltel and its a great phone. However, there are a few things about it that really irritate me, and I was wondering if there are hacks in order to get around them.

The first thing that irritates me is I cannot transfer pictures that I take on my phone to my computer, whether it be through bluetooh or USB. Maybe I am overlooking how to do it, but I am assuming the feature is locked.

Secondly, I cannot transfer files through bluetooth at all. It appears the only feature bluetooth supports is a headset, and that is unacceptable. Is it possible to unlock other services through bluetooth?

The last thing that irritates me is that you cannot assign an MP3 as the default ringtone. You can assign MP3s as a contact specific ringtone, which makes no sense whatsoever. Does this need to be hacked, or am I stupid?

If anyone can provide me insight into these issues in order to prevent me from returning this phone, please do so.

Thanks for any help in advance.

do a search. i think some of these issues are addressed...either with a fix, or as something you'll have to deal with.

Posted by: Dreadite

Alright. I searched, and found a good deal of information. Unfortunately I couldnt find anything directly addressing the issue of transfering pictures from my phone to the computer and why I cannot set an MP3 as my default ring tone, but I can assign it as a contact ring tone. If anyone can provide an answer, even if it is a "What you want to do isnt possible, sorry.", I'd be very happy.

Thanks.

do you have a TF card for the phone? i think you can move pictures from the phone to the card, then you just put the card in your computer. that would be the best way i could think of doing it if your other attempts haven't worked. i hope i didn't come off as too much of an *ss, i thought some things had been covered (that i've seen) but don't have one yet so i haven't paid to close attention. another question, did you do a search in this subforum? or the whole forum? there might be some info if you search the alltel subforum if you havne't already. i'll be getting a remix around the 10th of feb, so i'll be screwing around with it and will hopefully get some info out to people as to what can and can't be done good luck in the meantime though.

Yeah, I have the stock 16mb transflash card for the phone right now. I have a 512 mb on the way from ebay. I got software that allows me to transfer pics from the phone to my computer, but I still havent figured out bluetooth. Bluetooth file transfers really arent a big deal to me now that I have the USB situation under control.

However, what still puzzles me is the problem with trying to assign an MP3 as the default ringtone. It just doesnt make any sense.

Posted by: thefaceeater

you have to change the extension of the mp3 to .mid and save it in the saved sounds folder. then go to the media section on your phone and from saved sounds select the saved mp3 and assign it as your default.

bluetooth on these cannot do file transfers (i know it sucks)

The MP3's you want to use as your default ringtone must be saved in the saved sounds folder. From there, you can assign the MP3 as either the default ringer or as a contact ringer. Highlight the MP3 you want to use as the default and select options: assign: default ringer.

Works for me.

What exactly do you mean by change the extension? I didnt think you could convert MP3s to midis? Is there a program for this...?

Posted by: thefaceeater

no you dont actually change the extension. just rename it to .mid rather than .mp3t

Posted by: berry_lthird

I have never had to rename the files to .MID on the Remix so long as I save them in the SAVEDSND folder on the transflash media card.

Posted by: thefaceeater

well i have to do that to all mine. i dont know what to tell you

Is there a size limitation to the MP3 files? Whats strange is I do have my MP3s to the saved sound folder, and they refuse to be assigned as the default ringer. They can only be assigned as a contact-specific ringer. Weird, I know.

try shortening the file name. i had that problem because the name was too long so i shortened it and it worked

Haha. This is ridiculous. Still doesnt ****ing work. There has to be somethign retarded I am doing wrong. I tried making the file names 3 letters long, to no avail.

I have never had any problem as minor, yet as frusterating as this on ANY phone before.

Posted by: jeremyherl

Same problem with ringtones. Can only assign as a contact ringer. Not the default ringer.

Posted by: thefaceeater

have you tried more than one file. because some files wont work for me either

Only the ones that came on the phone work.

Posted by: berry_lthird

You might also try making sure the bitrate is correct and not something the phone would not like. My guess is that the phone will not play .MP3's that are larger than 192k, but I can't be certain. It may also have a problem with .MP3 files that are encoded using VBR (variable bitrate) encoding.

If you have an .MP3 file editor, you can try checking/changing the file's bitrate and make sure that it is CBR encoded (constant bitrate) rather than VBR.

When I have some time, I will investigate and see what I can turn up.

*shrugs*

Posted by: jeremyherl

I have tried just about every file that i have and none of them can be set as the default ringer.

I too am trying very hard to find out a way to set a mp3 as a default ringer

Posted by: Ira Feuerstein

I am trying to do something very simple..

Transfer 190 names from a Sony Ericsson to the KX5 via bluetooth...sounds easy, huh?

The Sony can easily transfer all data to my pc via bluetooth...everything is transferred fine.

The problem comes when I try to transfer the data from either my pc or from the Sony directly to the KX5. EVERYTIME I do it, it looks like it works, but ONLY 30 numbers are transferred...It stops EVERY SINGLE TIME...

So..I thought maybe that 30th entry was corrupt...so I deleted it in the Sony, deleted all contacts in the Kyocera and retried...Once again, it only sent 30 numbers, but this time it just went one farther than the one I had just deleted.

Kyocera has no idea what is happening...I called them multiple times.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Posted by: beyondwireless

if anyone as questions plase ask

Posted by: beyondwireless

correct myself real quick you need to save the ringtone as a midi file and then go to saved sounds on your phone and copy the file and place it in the ringers file

Posted by: thefaceeater

do you know how to axcess the custom menu that you can enable on pst on an alltel kx5

Posted by: beyondwireless

WHAT DO YOU mean by custom menu like the short keys like holdinh up sand whatever

Posted by: BoredKender

us with alltel dont really know what the "custom menu" is, just that it is something you can enable in PST, and we have no idea how to get to it after that step

Posted by: SLIDIN SMOOTH

ok fellas i been reading ur disscusion and which i know of a few answers. 1 the bluetooth on the kx5 is locked up tight u need a code to put in phone so you change the bluetooth capabilities "by the way i dont know the code yet but if some1 else finds pleaze tell me" 2 if want and easy to put files on ur card anywhere pop ur card in the sandisk adapter so its full size and if u have a laptop if should have a port for it and some new computers do if not u can get an adapter for usb port on pc. 3 the deafault ringer thing is complex wat i have noticed is that alot of the kx5's are different and different setups work for it. on mine in order to put at deafault ringer i must save to savedsnd folder in a very small size with .tim at the end . 4 as far as saving regular music to listen too, what ever extension u must use for ur phone it most likely wont recognize the extension unless u put a space between the extension and the file for example ( young joc- i know u see it .tim) if save like this (young joc- i know u see it.tim) or wat ever extension u use most likely wont recognize it also u cannot use ripped songs of a cd thats custom made needs to be genuine to work best like if u download a song or get off brand name cd so it has artist name and name of song along with album then for sured to work

Yup! This is how I do it!

Except I use a USB TransFlash adapter instead. That way, I can xfer files quickly from different computers without having to connect the phone every time.

I am also having the same problem.

Posted by: crackur

dude, you have to rename the file to MID that you want to be the default........but you have to make sure in your tools, file options that hide extension is unchecked before you rename it to whateveruwant.mid

Posted by: drewc4

You can move pictures with the TF card. Once you have assigned a ringtone to a contact it is now in the internal memory of you phone under ringtones. Unassign the ringtone you want as defult ringer from that contact and you should be able from the ringtone menu assign it as default.

Posted by: drewc4

Once you have assinged a ringer to a contact it is saved in the ringers file in the internal memory of the phone. Once in this file it can be assigned as the default ringer. Just remember to change the ringer on the contact. Unless you want a contact ringer and the default ringer to be the same.
