New Car... Some questions ~

Yesterday my partner got his new babieee, Carbon bronze pearl Accord EX V6

Anyway, we're babying this car until after break in, he doesnt even rev it over 2500rpm

But my question is I was flipping through the manual and no where does it mention how often you need to change oil and you should follow what the "oil life" computer tells you. The manual does not have maintenance schedule according to number of miles, but it says to do maintenance according to the symbol the computer displays

Can we trust the computer to tell us when to do maintenance? or is it better to do it a set number of miles?

What would be the best time to do 1st oil change? Should we switch to Mobil1 synthetic for the first oil change?

The last thing is we're debating in getting extended warranty or not.... But since we're in Florida, we can only get it at MSRP... Which is much more expensive than other states. Do you guys think it would be worth it to get 5yr/100K for around $1200USD?

Thanks

Congrats...!!!

Changing the Oil for the first time is debatable...at ClubRSX there were arguements...changing it early will remove harmful deposits/metal shaving (???)...on the other hand I read you have to leave it in so in can fully lubricate the engine and its components...!!!

I got the dealer to change my '02 Acura RSX after 3,000km...used 1 of my 2 free oil changes

When I switched to Synthetic...I waited around 20k/km...used Mobil 5W-30 for a year or so but later switched to Castol German Syntec 0W-30 because Mobil 1 was burning...!!!

I would really pass on the Extended Warranty...after all your partner did BUY a Honda...!!! That was my reason.

How long do you plan on keeping the car? How many miles do you put on a year? Determine if you're going to run out of the warranty period soon enough that you would even own the car long enough to make the investment worthwhile.

skip the extended warranty. those are huge profit-makers for dealers/retailers for a reason.

I dunno... I've got a Lexus ES300 which are NOT prone to any problems, and I had a memory mirror module go bad on me at 57,000 miles, but my extended warranty saved me $300 out of that one. I personally believe that warranties are ALWAYS worth it. I don't buy anything without an extended warranty.

Congrats on the new car though! The Accords are great vehicles

extended warranty with honda is useless

a. because the car rarely has problems and if it does it will show up way before the warranty is up
b. honda likes to point at its customers when problems occur (cocky bastids) yes they make good cars, but they have the worse customer service

and my suggestion and honda dealers usually recommend is leave the oil change off until atleast the recommended interval for your car (you should have got a brocure, i know both my cars even have a manual stating what type of service to do at what milage).

I believe newer hondas its 8000km (convert that to miles, im sry im canadian ). Leave it in for that much if not more (not way more, maybe 100) and then do the oil change.

Keep it regular oil changes until 16k (2nd oil change) and then switch to synthetic. I personally recommend 0w30 Castrol Syntec (german stuff check bobistheoilguy.com for several happy users). Mobil 1 synthetics are good too...

Honda dealers recommend you do your first oil change at 8000 kms, because the oil has special additives from the factory. After that, I believe your suppose to change your oil at regular intervals.

Obviously it won't say in the manual when to change the oil. Its common sense to change the oil every 5000kms or 3000 miles.

btw, when you mentioned computer. Did you mean the maintence light??? That light comes on at recommend service intervals. So far in my car it has come on at 16000 kms. I didn't get it serviced. I just reset the light myself. Although I do the regular oil changes, and maintence myself.

I think we'll skip the extended warranty since the majority thinks if there are problems they will come up after the extended warranty anyway... Im glad we didnt get pursuaded and buy it on the spot

I guess we'll do the oil change around 5000miles the first time and go a few times regular oil for 3-5000miles then switch to synthetic

Thanks guys for all your input
