A Foregin Problem

Well, i'm not sure who to ask, or what to do, or if it is possible but... here is the problem. My girlfriend is from Colombia (south america) and for christmas i bought her the Razr V3 8.26 and i thought that she could get her sim card over there and get the phone activated, because as i understood it wasn't going to do her any good to buy a sim card in the united states. Well she has tried to get her phone activated over there but they are about three or four versions behind what i bought her, and they have no idea how to get the information/software they need to activate it. Does anyone know how to get around this, or is there a way. If there is a file or something i can send them that would work, but in all honesty i have absolutly no idea about modifying or workin on cell phones. The companies down there who actually do that thing are telling her that she just has to wait untill the version she has gets down there (in about three months). If anyone has any ideas on what needs to be done and has the patients to explain it to someone who knows nothing i would really appriciate it. Thanks all.

If the provider she will be using is GSM, then all they should need from the phone is the sim card number, and IMEI. If they won't activate that IMEI, then just get and activate another phone, and move the sim card over.

the problem i think might be that, that phone, when i bought it here in the united states i did not purchase a sim card. Because they told me it wouldn't be any good out of the country anyways. She already had a phone down there and thought she would be able to switch the sim card over (because that is rather common for them down there) but now they are telling her they don't have the software or programs to do that because the version of her phone was newer than what they currently have avalable down there. Does that make any sense? Hey, and thanks for posting help.

No, doesn't really make sense.... All she has to do is put her sim card in the phone. She doesn't need to contact her provider. Again, doublecheck to make sure her provider is a GSM provider.

he probably bought a locked phone and they probably cant unlock it? sounds like the issue to me

Well If She Can Get Asim Card Over There Then It Would Work With The Phone. But Maybe The Phone Is Locked And Needs To Be Unlocked To Make It Work. But Why Did You Buy A Razr When She Can Get A Decent Phone For Cheap When She Opens A Account.

I'm not sure if it was locked or not, all i can say is i got it from best buy. Reasoning for not gettin her a phone down there, is because they are much more expensive, and she does not have the money to buy it (even with a two or three year agreement) they just cost more down there. I don't believe the phone is locked though, they just seem to be having problems getting the sim card functioning..... but like i said i'm pretty stupid when it comes to cell phones so i suspose anything is possible. thanks for everyone time though and the sugestions.
