Disappearing POP mail from sp5m WM5

Greetings,

I searched and could not find yadda yadda yadda. The issue is I have my WM5 SmartPhone (i-mate SP5m) checking POP mail every 15 min. It's Gmail, and I use the pop.googlemail.com:995 address instead of gmail to avoid the certificate issue. Anyway... that's not my problem (or maybe it is, who knows). The issue is that I'll sometimes be alerted to a new message, I see the "partial" envelope icon with the Sender and Subject in the inbox, see the status up top saying "Retrieving X of Y", and wait for it. When it finally completes, it disappears from the Inbox. No idea what is happening. I don't see a setting for "display only read messages" or something bizarre like that. Sometimes it alerts me only when the message is completely downloaded, and it doesn't disappear. Strange.

Any ideas?
