Good GPS mapping software

Is there any good, reasonably priced, gps sortware, that gives audible turn by turn directions. I have messed around with mapopolis a little but thats about it.

I used to use Mapopolis but did not like how you had to add the seperate maps. Routis is much better for mapping over large distances.

Copilot and Destinator both offer smartphone versions as well, reviews of both seem to be varied, I have never used either...both are kinda pricey, but Destinator is slightly cheaper.

If you can give up the turn-by-turn requirement, MS Streets and Trips comes w/ a smartphone version that works w/ a GPS for general nav capability. If you get the 2007 version, you'll get turn-by-turn in the PC product.

What about TOMTOM MOBILE (from the Netherlands.... )!

It is a really FULL FEATURED application. I have heard that there are also USA maps for TTM... but I never "found" these....

But really consider this as a serious option! Look for details: here

I use Mapopolis and find it to be an excellent smartphone app(once you understand some of the bluetooth issues)
It costs $100 for a year subscription of Maps and my Altina BT GPS cost around $100. This is by far the most inexpensive solution I could find for US navigation on an MPx220.
Mapopolis no longer has the issues mentioned above, you can load all the maps for a state or states and map freely between them. Make sure you have 4.6 or better.
I travel extensively in the US and heavily rely on Mapopolis to get me where I need to go.

I believe that TOMTOM mobile for the smartphone is available, but not packaged w/ US maps yet...someone here recently responded that you could use the US maps from another package, like the PPC or Laptop product...so that would definitely be an option, but like Copilot, more expensive if the goal here is to keep the price down.

Mapopolis would be one low-cost solution...

Destinator SP is a bit more, around $125 for the US version...

I've never used either.

I just bought MSFT's Streets & Trips 2006 for $30 (great deal for the i-Blue USB adapter plus S&T at Semsons ).

The software comes with a WM5 version but it's pretty stripped-down. I can pair my i-Blue GPS unit and with the proper map installed it shows me exactly where I am with a bunch of waypoints (restaurants, etc..) as well. No directions or anything like that but you can use push-pins. Like I said - pretty stripped-down but it works well. Easy to zoom in and out but you have to stop the GPS feature in order to scroll inside the map (otherwise it keeps centering on your location).

One trick is that you need to manually save the maps you use to your phone. I've exported some of the main cities I travel in from Streets & Trips and saved them on my phone (Atlanta inside loop is about 800K).

*Sidenote-
I love my i-Blue GPS unit - it comes with a wall and car charger tat you can use for your 2125 as well. May as well kill 2 birds with one stone.

TTM is great i use it all the time and by copying the needed software onto a larger sd card and adding a my documents folder to contain music video and pics you get all that you need every where you go on one card as for US maps none are listed on there web site but that doesn't mean it s not possible to get some from somewhere that do work with it let me see what I can find

TomTom works with TeleAtlas maps.

tomtom maps of USA on Amazon

I have a TomTom standalone device, the GO 700 right now, and I think its' great. I also know they use TeleAtlas maps. Overall though, I've been very impressed.

It appeared to me that the GO 300 and 700 do not include maps of Hawaii. Is that accurate?

I'm not 100% sure about that but can look into it. Why do you say that? I would assume both the 300 and 700 would cover Hawaii.

I use iGuidance from inavcorp.com. I tried several of the others but found that iGuidance was the best one for me. it is definately worth a look if you are traveling in NA.

i love iguidance on the PC but i understand it doesnt work on the hp 6515.
im back from hawaii now, but the reason i dont think the 300 and 700 have HI is because all their marketing materials that i looked at said contenintal US and i found references to AK being on a separate add-on CD which led me to believe HI might be the same case as well.

Heh, heh, TomTom does have US maps. They can be "found" in the logical places. I have looked at the Navigator 5 for Palm OS, (runs on the Treo 650). Great looking app that really adds value to a pda or Smartphone if you have a bluetooth GPS.

Tom Tom does indeed have US maps, the question is whether or not their standard map pack included Hawaii (which is now a non issue as I've already been there and left and used the demo maps from Mapopolis which didn't exactly work as well there as their San Fran map. In HI I was shown driving through the Pacific the couple of times I tried to use the app. Works fine in San Fran though).

Posted by: CurtisPulley

Sorry I couldn't find out about the Hawaii stuff sooner for the 300 and 700. I'm still not sure whether they do or not, but I woudl imagine the 700 would b/c of it's larger hard drive.

Posted by: robr

I think I found what made me question whether HI was included or not... if you go here:
http://www.tomtom.com/products/sect...=210&Language=4

You'll note the silouhette of the included areas and HI isn't shown. Perhaps it's just an oversight.

I just checked the 700 I'm using, and it shows Honolulu as a viable address and has a map of the city, so I will assume that it has the whole state included on there.

good to know, thanks.

Just ordered CoPilot Live 6 for SmartPhone ( for my 2125 ). I called the dude at copilot, and he gave it to me for $99 for the continental US maps ( a savings of $100 off ). Also, ordered the OnCourse SiRF Star III Bluetooth receiver thru buygpsnow.com. A friend just got this receiver as well, and says it's pretty incredible, and he's had a couple of other receivers for comparison purposes. Size wise, that receiver is slightly smaller than an LG6000 cell phone.

Will let you know how it goes....
