what is "enter subsidy code"?

hi guys,
my pal dropped his v400 in some water and broke it. so, i used the parts to fix my v300 (screen). then i shopped on ebay and found nother v300 (broken) so i used those parts to fix the v400! but, now when i turn it on, it says enter subsidy. it was on cingular plan and i put a cingular sim card in it. is the phone shot or how do u get a subsidy?

subsidy code means the phone is locked for some other carrier than what your sim card is made for...you need to have it unlocked.
