Problem with V300 - LCD flash and call hangup

First let me state the problem my phone is having, and then I'll tell you what I've done so far that hasn't fixed it.
The problem. Motorola V300. Occasionally, when the phone would ring, I would open the flip phone, the LCD screen would come on/light up for less than a second, then go completely dark for about a second, then come back on, and in the process drop the phone call. You could close, then re-open the phone and it would not repeat this problem. But, I learned that sometimes, you could wait until the backlight on the outer LCD to go off, then open the phone and then screen would flash on, then off, then back on (same as it would in dropping a call). Not always though.
So what have I done? Maybe it was a setting or software glitch. Tried playing with a bunch of settings including power save and backlighting with no fix. My wife let a t-mobile guy in a store mess with it once when she had a problem with it. No telling what he did. But, I've flashed/updated to the V3 following the instructions that were posted on the boards. Pretty nice. But didn't fix this problem. Still occurred. That means it wasn’t a setting. Maybe it's a dirty contact on the inside of the phone. I took it apart, cleaned what I thought was appropriate and put it back together again. I thought that maybe this had fixed it for a little while, but no it still happened. I think less often though. Then I started imagining that after one of these episodes I could smack it in the palm of my hand and it would take longer before it would occur again. But was I kidding myself?
So, I ordered a new flex cable. The old one was bent up in the hinge area and maybe there was a broken wire. So I replaced it. Now, it’s happening more often like it used to. What did I do to make this happen?
I can only get it to exhibit this problem on the opening of the phone. If it was a bad connection somewhere, then it would seem to have to occur when I bent the hinge back and forth. Nope, no deal. I can move the phone back and forth, move the hinge back and forth, but nothing makes the LCD turn on and off except occasionally opening the phone the first time. If it stutters, I can open and close it again immediately and the problem doesn’t repeat.
What do you think? Fixable? Setting? Hardware and unfixable? Has anyone else had a problem like this? Thanks for any help.
