I have an older Powerbook G4 with IrDA. I wanted to know if any form of
tethering was going to be possible between the 2125 and the Mac.
Since my phone/usb cable is unavailable at the moment, I thought I would
have a go at getting things working via IrDA. Lo! It works!
It boiled down to being able to use one of the existing modem connection
scripts shipped w/ 10.4..., in this case, the "Sprint PCS Vision" connect
script.
Assuming that you're familiar with the Mac network configuration GUI, you'll need
to do the following:
1. While not strictly necessary, create a new "Location"..., call it whatever
you like..., something like "IR".
2. Set "Show:" to "IrDA".
3. Click on "IrDA Modem".
4. Set "Modem:" to "Sprint PCS Vision".
5. Set the checkbox for "Enable error correction..."
6. Clear the checkbox for "Wait for dial tone...".
6.1 Set the checkbox for "Show IrDA status...".
6.2 Set the checkbox for "Show modem status...".
7. Click on "Apply Now".
8. Click on "PPP".
9. Click on "Dial Now". You will be presented with an "Internet Connect"
dialogue.
10. Click on the "IrDA" button.
11. Either using the existing Configuration you're presented with, or
creating a new one, enter the following values:
Telephone Number: *99#
Account Name: ISP@CINGULAR.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
12. Using the IrDA icon in the Finder menu bar, make sure IrDA is
enabled.
13. On the phone, "Activate" the IrCOMM connection using the Modem Link
application.
14. Make sure the phone and laptop IrDA ports can see each other.
15. Click on the "Connect" button from the IrDA configuration you just
entered in step 11 (in "Internet Connect").
It should work.
Thereafter..., to use the new setup:
1. On the phone, Activate "IrCOMM" using Modem Link.
2. Set the Mac's location to "IR" (or whatever you called it).
3. Make sure IrDA is enabled on the Mac.
4. Click on the modem icon in the Finder menu bar.
5. Click on "Connect".
On the way to getting this working, I think on "modaco.com", somebody
posted the Audiovox5600 modem connect script for the Mac. I may
revisit this when I get the time, to see if things will work better.
I was a little surprised that the Sprint script worked, as it incorporated
what I would assume were some fairly vendor specific AT commands.
There are probably other ways to skin this particular cat..., but I
thought it worth sharing the news about the Sprint script.
Cheers.

Sigh. I knew this would happen as soon as I posted this. You could
just look at:

and

Since I don't have BT on the Mac..., my googling didn't include it. So
just for yucks, it occurred to me that the connect scripts probably
didn't care much about the exact inter-device connection technology...,
so I threw BT into the search..., and got some very useful info.
See above.
