Homemade SLVR L7 miniUSB to 3.5mm adapter

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Bubbleman

I have no idea where to buy a ready made adapter so I made my own and plug in my Sony earbuds. Those from ebay don't work cos they don't amplify the sound. I know Cingular sells one online but I can't buy it from where I live. And the headset in the package is not very good.

If anyone needs the wiring diagram I will gladly help you out. BTW the pic above is taken with my L7.

Posted by: rmens

Very nice. Does it provide stereo output? I would like to see the wiring diagram, could you post it?

Posted by: scottio1

Nice work there sir! I'd love the pin schematic so I can do the same!

3.5mm adapter
Cut and open up, there are 3 wires (red, green/blue and yellow)

red = earth
green/blue = right ear
yellow = left ear

miniUSB/EMU adapter
Cut and open up, separate out the wires. There are 6 wires (red, black, green, white, gold, silver). Carefully strip off the rubber housing on the red, black, green and white wires to expose a bit of the copper underneath.

Moto handsfree
Use a flat screwdriver and ply open the top panel carefully.
Once opened up take out the pcb and cut away all the connecting wires. Pull out the wire stopper at each end and put them on both your adapters before soldering.
From the top view:

We can begin soldering now:
1. Solder the RED wire on the 3.5mm adapter to point 8. (Earth)
2. Solder the GREEN wire on the 3.5mm adapter to point 7. (Right ear)
3. Solder the YELLOW wire on the 3.5mm adapter to point 2. (Left ear)
4. Solder the RED wire on the EMU adapter to point 3.
5. Solder the WHITE wire on the EMU adapter to point 4.
6. Solder the GREEN wire on the EMU adapter to point 5.
7. Solder the BLACK wire on the EMU adapter to point 6.
8. Flip the pcb over. Solder the GOLD wire on the EMU adapter to the point under the BLACK wire point (6).
9. Solder the SILVER wire on the EMU adapter to the point under point 1.

Ok you are done. I hope my description is clear enuff. Assemble everything back together and your adapter should be ready to use! There is no need to edit the gain table as the sound is now properly amplified.

I understand everything but the adapter we are soldering inline . . . .what is it, what does it do, and where do I get it?

YOU ROCK!!!!!

What are the pinouts of the Mini USB side? Which cable is used for what?
I want to connect a Nokia (with the cut button) or a Motorola (without the cut button) handfree to a V3. How do you adapt it to work?
What are the pinout of a handfree with cut button on the 3.5 or 2.5 mm side?

Thanks

Posted by: aznpharm

just did mine... thanks for the diagram... really helped out

Posted by: divang

is there a point for the hands free module being there other the amplifying the sound? because if a call comes through then you press the answer button on the hands free but the mic is ALL the way by the phone lol

Posted by: aznpharm

yeah when I did mine... if left my mini usb side really long for that reason... plus i have the short cord sony earphones... so it helps that too... love it...

really comes through when I want to listen to bubba sparx say BOOTY BOOTY BOOTY BOOTY ROCKIN EVERYWHERE!!! in public

Posted by: divang

When i bought my phone it came with the Motorola usb to 3.5 headphone jack, and the Motorola stereo/headset usb jack

heres' the usb to 3.5 headphone jack, it has that little dongle thing in the middle like the stereo/headset but you can't answer calls with it like the other, so you have to disconnect when a call comes through unlike the other one. but at least you can use your own headphones

Posted by: cdrasmu

Do you know the pinout for the USB to 3.5 converter?

Thanks

So you can try to find it in your area.

Bubbleman, Is this picture taken with your L7 phone camera??
It's pretty clear for a micro mode you have there!... great!

Posted by: graywolf316

ok so i got 2 Q? 1. can u still answer calls with it or do u have to disconect.
2. how the h3ll did u get ur pics from ur L7 to look that good?

Posted by: roots4x

Can anybody post a picture of the ICs on the board? High-rez, if possible.

Posted by: cyberoidx

Hey how about adding a 3.5 mm audio input

i know its possible.. since you've done it.. which one connects to the mic on the pcb?

I dont expect stereo aud inpute (line in), but mono should be fine for me..

Actuallu it's kind of hard to get to the actual adapter from the main cingular.com site. Try this link for SLVR L7 Accessories:

http://onlinestorez.cingular.com/ce...q_id=2877100015

I got the adapter for my V3i. Although I miss the headset capabilities, the music sounds infinitely better with a real set of headphones.

I kinda wish they had an adapter similar to the SE Walkman phones where the mic and answer button are built into the adapter and there's a long enough wire so you can clip it on your collar.

Posted by: cyberoidx

You can do the se thing in this method, dont cut the thicker cable THAT short.

Posted by: QuakerOatz

Great stuff!
One question though, if the purpose is only to attach your own headphones to the PTT headset, why not just cut the headset cable and solder on a 3.5" adapter?

Why bother cutting and then resoldering the mini USB end? I must be missing something here.

Posted by: cyberoidx

Ya, the ptt button and the mike are only attached to the right earphone..

the left one is not on the same wire.

Atleast on my headset.. :P

Posted by: QuakerOatz

Oops that makes sense.... DOH!

So does the PTT still work with this mod?
It looks like it doesn't as the PTT and mic are now a couple inches from the phone, not dangling under your mouth so the mic wouldn't pick up your voice.

Would it be possible to simply cut the earbuds off a quality set and cut the stock ones off the PTT headset and solder the quality earbuds on the existing PTT headet?

Voila, PTT and quality stereo sound.

Posted by: desi_daru

yah i would also like to know if u could jus cut the ear buds off and solder the wire to some high quality ones

Posted by: cyberoidx

that would be an obvious yes.

you will have to remove enamel from all the wires.. which is a pain.

You will still have the microphone and answer button casing and of course the 3.5mm jack so you can plug in any standard stereo headphones.

I'm going out of town for a week, but I'll definitely order a set and test it out when I get back. It will spare my from butchering my stock headset. =p

Thanks for the tip nabeed.

http://www.tangshop.com/motorola-ra...otorola-v3.html

These are great too very small and cables really short..mine just shipped .. hoping to get it in 2-4 days! will send pics and feedback on how they work.. i heard many adapters have low volume problems? anyways if your gonna buy one this ones way better for value!! i actually broke my v3i headset just buy having it under my pillow! lol now im using v3x headphones so i dont want to risk breaking those either.. but the $7.95 one actually has a microphone built in so you can still talk! Handy!

Does anybody knows if this could be done with a simple usb to mini-usb cable, I mean cutting it off and mixing it with the 3.5 jack!?

I emailed the store and didn't get any reply, didn't try phoning yet. Might have to contest the credit card charge...

Guess I'm going to have to go for the real $20 Motorola part from Cingular.

Does anyone know what that "dongle" in the Motorola EMU to 3.5mm converter does? If it's essential, presumably there was never any chance the cheap part from tangshop was going to work...

whats up; do you know how to put a program on the slvr where you can put more songs on it than itunes allows?

I'm guessing that both the OEM stereo headset w/ mic and the 3.5 mm adapter through Cingular both have some sort of amplifier that works though the EMU. Either that or the cheap adapters are simply wired incorrectly.

Posted by: mobileobsession

I just placed an order for the $6.95 3.5mm to EMU adapter w/ mic.

Note, that this adapter is different than the adapter without the mic that was ordered previously.

http://www.tangshop.com/35mm-audio-...otorola-v3.html

I figured it was worth a shot especially if it actually works since most moto phones use the EMU/USB port for the sounds and not one freakin' mainstream manufacturer other than motorola has a decent headset to fit this kind of port.

I took the least expensive shipping option so it's a $10.90 gamble. I'll cross my fingers and let you all know if it indeed works or not as soon as I recieve it.

Posted by: earlyberd

Hey guys.
I've got a question regarding the wiring of my own little adapter project.

I have been wanting to create my own EMU to 3.5mm adapter for the longest time, but I'm not concerned with it including the mic so I can still answer calls with it plugged in. Plus, I'm not really in the mood for cutting up my brand new hands-free set that I bought with my phone.

I found a set of headphones that belonged to one of my old Panasonic CD players, and it includes a remote attached to the cord. So basically you plug the remote into the CD player, and the remote has a 3.5mm jack that you plug the headphones into. So I got to thinking that it might serve well as a 3.5mm jack to solder onto the end of an EMU cable, saving me the trouble of having to go buy one from Radio Shack.

Opening up the remote revealed that there are four wires that go into it, presumably a left, right, signal, and ground. And after chopping up a 2.5mm to EMU adapter that came with my phone (which I would have never used for its original purpose), I found it to have four wires as well, presumably a D+, D-, VCC, and ground.

Now on the solder points on the remote, Panasonic was nice enough to label the right channel and left channel as R and L, and the other two are labled as SIG and CON or COM (I can't really tell if it's an N or M, because the bottom of the letter is sorta cut off).
Basic knowledge of USB and 3.5mm jacks told me that the green wire of the EMU should go to L, and the white should go to R.
But I'm still fairly new to this, so I've never seen wires labeled as CON/COM or SIG, and thus I don't know where the red and black wires should go.

If someone could tell me where the red and black wires go, it would be much appreciated. I'm also unsure of this actually working, so if you have a reason why this would not work, please share it.

OK, I just got the adapter and it's absolute crap. The mini-USB/EMU plug is sliding back into the casing so I can't even plug it in correctly. When I try to push it into the jack slowly all I get is a loud buzzing noise while the music still plays though the external speaker. =/

It does look cool, too bad it doesn't freakin' work...

Posted by: masterb

I have bought a miniusb to jack stereo adapter from ebay for less than 1$, to use for my v3i. It has revealed to be a crap (thats what u get for a buck..). Volume is really low, and my sony headset dont plug in very well.
So i decided to take my cutter and open it to see what's inside. First I cutted the rubber near the jack. I noticed 3 wires, but they were not insulated as usual with plastic, but only with some smalt!! (the same material that's used to insulate the copper wire in solenoids).
After that, I taked out my multimeter and I tested the resistance between them, and I got that 2 wires were shorted!!
So why not open the miniusb side? Here we go. The minusb side revealed me that the Left and Right channel were shorted, and soldered to the pin 5 (the first keeping the connector in front of me).
Most important, there is a resistor(100K) between pin 5 and 4. There is an electrolitic capacitor (47u) between 1 and 3. Finally, the third wire come out from the pin 2.
bye

Hey, 1st post.. Great thread! I've been looking everywhere for a guide to make this conversion.. I am new, though, to hardware modding/soldering, so it might take me a little time to research before i get into trying it out.. It sounds great though!!

Anyway, what i want is someone to plz repost the pic with the 3 wires.. Its gone offline again. And maybe one of the whole thing built. I only have the 2 soldering pics.

Also, i'd like to know what accesories are needed for this. Apart from the moto handsfree and the 3.5 jack adapter, do i also need an mini-usb/EMU adapter(whatever that is)? Thnx!

I can't any of these adapters onver here, and from an online store they don't deliver in my country. The only thing i cold find is a mono handsfree that actualy have a good sound..but you know ..2 is better than one http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/4893.htm
Could I actualy do something with this to adapt a decent stereo headset?

Posted by: masterb

you have to search for s200 adapter and try to modify it, or you can buy on ebay from usa the syn1505. I opted for the first one, hope to be able to do it.

Posted by: midknyte

Has anyone tried these wiring instructions (from pages 1&2) against the earphones that are available on ebay? Thanks.

Posted by: Siobhter

Don't buy the Tangshop adapter! It does work on my L7, but the volume is crappy and it sounded like mono. I opened it up and sure enough, only two wires to the headphone jack!

Anyway, don't buy this one. The motorola brand adapter is ok, if you don't mind paying for it: $20 at a cingular store, $17.95 + S&H at http://www.cell-phone-accessories.com/syn1504.html.

Bottom line, you get what you pay for. I will be able to use the headphone jack for the hack Bubbleman posted, so it's not a total loss.

Dunno anything about this seller, but I googled the SYN1504 and found this for $7.99.

I keep finding references on google for both a SYN1504 & a SYN1504A, but I'm not sure what the differences are. I went on the Motorola.com site, but searching syn1504 weirdly came up empty....

Whoah man, and I thought I had a good deal on my headset adapter from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Head...4/dp/B000M83Y1W

Roughly 10 bucks for the OEM Genuine Motorola Adapter. Shipping was $4.95. Reasonable vs. the Cingular price of $19.99+tax.

Posted by: sui_winbolo

Crap, ordered one of those crappy adapters off of ebay, talk about buyers remorse!

Not even worth it to send it back. Looks like I'll be buying the official adapter.

well the one I ordered off Amazon works perfectly.... its the OEM Motorola one, just for .. 9 bucks :-)

i ordered an adapter off of ebay too... =[ but im not worried about handsfree or anything i just want to listen to my music through my 'thump' earbuds. but i cant figure out how to like change the setting to play thru the earphones cuz when i plug them it it is still playing music through the speakerphone... so what should i do? thx.

Posted by: SnowRaptor

Seeing the PCB, I could note the solder points for the MIC.

If I soldered a pair of wires and put the mic away from the adaptor, it should work fine, right?

Unfortunately the MBW100 watch is only compatible with Sony Ericsson phones and only certain models at that. The W810i, the K790a the S500 or the W580 are the most compatible with the North American market.

Hey partner my english is not very good so Ill try to be brief.
You have my answers, could you make an schematic of this miniusb to 3.5 adaptor?? please i need to undestand firts 1.-How the cellphone knows or detect the adaptor or a any handsfree so u have one opened and if you are cool you can test with a multimeter the pin outs, cause i have to figure it how i can built an adaptor usin a original motorola handsfree and charge the cellphone at the same time and i found how the cellphone detect the charger pluged in it, but i dont know whicht is the diference between detect a charger and a handsfree, maybe some kind of shortcircuite betwwen the pin x and the 1 ,2 3, or 4 of the miniusb pinouts. So please friend post this info to everybody I spend a lot of time searching information but noone knows or think my dudes.

2.- I am wonder if you try too to find the ic number of your adaptor because is a great idea how the manufacter knows how to decode the audio data of the cellphone and convert into a analog signal for the headphone also tho get the signal to the mic, you have huge source of info in your adaptor cable so friend please please try discover all my questions , here in my country i cant found this cable adaptor to open it and make all this test, so keep in mind would be great to make a homemade adaptor using a motorla handsfree and cahrge the cell at the same time bat i need to know how to set up the adaptor in order to the cellphone understand that it has to send audio data and receibe the charge for the battery. also at once we know how to decode audio from the cell phone usb port because you has in your hand the ic chip and the cbles and the capacitor , you just nees to copy and draw onto a paper how is wiring and copy the values of te resiitor, and capacitor and the number of the ic, and where this wires goes trough the miniusb pinouts terminals,. so please please help me friend , and one more time apologices my english

Hello.
I have not quite understood very much this guide lol. English is my secondary language.
Will the sound be any louder with this homemade adapter?
I bought a Stereo Headset for V3/L7, the sound sucks, the Mono Headset that my L7 brought sounds a thousand times better.
I don't understand the first part of the guide, where there is no picture.
I have to basically resolder the miniUSB plug? and where the headphones go I have to cut and put in a 3.5mm plug?

In some of the middle pages the guide was reposted with images, so it's clearer.

The sound won't be any louder, only will sound better if you stick quality phones to it.

The instructions are about soldering a female 3.5mm jack so you can stick your favortie phones to it.

well divang can we make this thing up, i dont think its difficult to make this but for tht i need the pin diagram of the mini usb port of my phn or just tht of the phn's headset..
Actually this accesories of motorola are very costly n they burn a hole in my pocket if i go to buy it frm them, so i wanna make one for myself.. plz giv me the pin diagram

If I put a female 3.5mm adapter to the miniUSB plug directly, with no amplifying circuit, is the volume the same as when listening with the common stereo headset included with the phone?
BTW, has anyone tried that yet? and stick some headphones with integrated volume control?
Probably install some Java mp3 player with equalizer and raise the volume from there

If the volume is the same as the mono or stereo headset for the L7 without the amplifier, I might just wire directly the miniUSB to the female 3.5mm adapter. it's enough volume for me...

I would like to know this as well. Has anyone tried this, or is this thread as dead as week old fish?

I did the soldering on the origibal motorola PCB as described on the second page of this thread and it worked like a charm.
