i-mate or qtek?

Okay, what is the difference? is the phone a sp5m, or an 8300? I'm confused to the max!

HTC makes the "Tornado" which comes in two styles. The style you referenced is the media version. I-Mate is a company that buys the phones from HTC, and so is Qtek. There might be slight differences in what either company (more likely I-Mate) adds in terms of software. But in short, same phone, different branding.

Hmm...Any BIG differences?

Same phones, different labels. IMHO the difference is support. i-Mate has a good web site and limited on-line support. Qtek is sketchy. It is my understanding that they are partnering with a US company for support here, but as of 3 weeks ago the site wasn't up.

On the other hand Qteck is strongly rumored to be releasing AKU2.0 this month. . . If you can find it!

Also, the qtek comes with a 2 year warranty, whereas the i-mate comes with a 1 year warranty. Also, I believe the i-mates come with carrying cases and the qteks do not. I'm not sure, but I think i-mate loads some type of anti-virus software that sometimes bogs the system. Just what I've read, but I can't verify. I can verify that the qtek doesn't appear to have it.

Yes, i-mates have anti-virus software from CA. I hate CA software and immediately did a hard reset to wipe it out. And iJITSU is correct on warranty. iMate also does come with a case but I am using my SMT5600 case because I like it better.

So from what I have read, I should get the Qtek? I don't need a case, I can buy one later.

Qteck = lower price and longer warranty. i-Mate = shorter warranty, better support. Pick your poison!

Another thing to consider if you buy an imate SP5 you can download the latest operating system (ROM) updates directly from www.imate.com website. These updates can only be downloaded if you own an imate and not a qtek after you register the IMEI number on the website....

If you buy an qtek not sure how easy and where to download these updates.

For some people these update are not a show stopper but for me it was.

Just my 2 cents.

grr now im torn idk which one to get anymore

Talk with David at MMB about the upcoming support site for the Qtek. It is not up as of today (http://www.soundsolutionsam1.com/) but he may have current status.

I remember making the same decision when it came to buying a Qtek or I-mate, or SP5m or Qtek 8300. What I found was the Qtek makes better sense for ME. Qtek has a 2 year warranty but no online support unlike www.clubimate.com which also carries a 1 year warranty.. If this isnt your first smartphone and have bought Imate before then you already know how bad the customer support is. The live support isn't worth anything and all my problems were solved on howardforums.com

But Qtek from what I have read is owned by HTC and is their in-house sales company. They offer no customer support but because owned by HTC they release their ROM's well before I-mate who has to customize the ROM(which usually makes things run worse). Two things I would suggest to ensure best support of the product would be to buy from MADMONKEYBOY who has an excellent reputation in helping you with a Qtek warranty and visit www.xda-developers.com for the Qtek ROM updates. From MADMONKEYBOY's posts I have read he works with www.soundsolutions.com very closely which is a QTEK USA rep.

Anyhow, that's what I understand and believe. If this is your first smartphone then I-mate may be a safer first-time purchase so that you can gain life-time access to club-imate.com but after that Qtek may be your best choice.

I don't doubt this at all, but I have never seen it and David at MMB didn't mention it to me either. That is pretty significant and for me it would have pushed me to Qtek and not i-mate. For the record, David did tell me that Sound Solutions was taking over USA support and he gave me the above listed URL.

And thanks for the link to XDA-Developers! You can never have too many resources like that.

Sounds like I'll be going with Qtek from madmonkeyboy when I get the funds. dwest, you'd make a great sales rep, heh!

Qtek looks better :P

What's that program you load onto Windows Mobile, that changes the interface of it to look nicer.. not much description, but that's all I can really think of. They actually charge you for the program, but last I knew, it was in beta testing and free.

I have an i-mate SP5m bought from Dubai. It is Boxed Pack as good as new with all accessories which also includes a stereo headset and leather case. I used the phone for two weeks as back up to test wifi et all. I have now moved to a CDMA plan. I will sell this phone for US $436, Add $25 for DHL shipping. I accept Paypal. Phone ships from NYC. PM me if interested.
