Metal 8390

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: GNOSIS

My 8390 with new all metal cover, purchased from "lovemoments" on eBay. It has a brushed look mostly everywhere, except it's polished chrome between the chrome keys and above the screen. "Nokia" is engraved into both front and back metal covers. The phone is a bit heavier than usual now, but it's still relatively lightweight.

I'd be happy to post larger photos if someone could tell me how to post photos larger than 25 Kb.

I like, I like! That's one sweet phone you got there, GNOSIS. Have you noticed a difference in reception (I know that some metal covers affect reception)?

BTW, you have to host the pics on your own server if you want to post pics larger than 25k.

Posted by: GNOSIS

I was concerned about that myself, but so far, no reception problems. The top antenna area on the back side is still original black plastic... just has a metal battery cover.

Oh, I guess I should warn you of the problems I have with this cover. The volume buttons don't work at all, so I set it to max level before putting on this cover. Also, when I first received it, I had to carefully bend the tabs so they'd fit the phone correctly. I felt like if I bent it too fast or far, it'd break. Thank goodness it didn't, because I absolutely love this cover. I was obsessed with my 6500 flip cover for awhile, but now it's metal!

Posted by: juhn

might be a problem when the phone's back aint facing the tower you are on...
currents will be induced in the metal front as the em waves pass through it and your brain =)

afaik, thats why the 8810 was pulled off the market after a short while.... rx/tx problems due to the metal housing...

Posted by: GNOSIS

As long as I look cool when I'm getting brain cancer, it's OK.

Posted by: Gatorade

is it heavy? or light like aluminum?

Posted by: GNOSIS

Good question. I don't know, I think it's fairly thick aluminum because it does add some noticeable weight to the phone.

Posted by: ianrulz123

If you want to post bigger pictures I will host them, just email the pictures to me @ ianrulz321@hotmail.com

Posted by: GNOSIS

The 8390 typically weighs 2.9 ounces. With this metal housing, it's now 3.80 ounces, which is 30% heavier. The 6310 weighs about this much (3.9 oz).

Posted by: GNOSIS

Thanks for posting photos for me, ianrulz!

Posted by: ianrulz123

LOL, no prob. That cover looks badass too, i wish there was one for the 8265.

Posted by: Ryan1524

really nice...!!!
congrats..

they should also make matching keys...the blue and white doesn't suit the brushed aluminum look...but still really nice..
and i see you got full signal..nice..

Posted by: GNOSIS

Yeah, I'm thinking of getting another keypad. What color keypad do you all think would look best with the metal housing? Chrome keys to complete the metal look? Or some color? How about this crystal keypad with silver underneath?

Posted by: smarc

I am in love with that faceplate.
Now I must decide.....chrome or flip?!?!?

Hmm... choices, choices. I think a chrome keypad would be too much metal on the phone. The crystal keypad w/silver undeneath sounds intriguing...

Posted by: smarc

I think the Black crystal jewel keypad will look good with the metal housing.

Posted by: Tito71

Just got my Metal faceplate from ebay too (Item #1949239994)

I'll give some feedback when I'll get it.

Posted by: Melisande

Man, now I wish that I hadn't sold off my 8390 so quickly

Posted by: Tito71

I will use this white keypad with it:

Posted by: Ryan1524

i think the chrome and the white looks good..the black might work too...as long as no colours...

the chrome i'm talking should be like the OEM keypad's softkeys, navigation and send/end button...basically the chrome part of the OEM keypads...

the black and white should either be at least be at the OEM crystal's quality...

OR..what would look really good is the matte dark keys used in 6590s...the brushed metal looks a lot like 6590...and the chrome keys i mentioned before..would make it look like a slider-less 8910

hm...sorry...i'm rambling on....and i don't even have the metal plates yet...

I know it's not the same, but you get what you pay for:

(There are also different shades and tones, along with "crystal" keypads)

Just a note on lovemoments and eBay, if you buy somthing from him the stuff (in this case my metal faceplate for the Nokia 8390) is leaving from Hong Kong even if it says Canada when you are searching on ebay.ca for stuff located in this Country...hmmm...

i think it means LOCATED and AVAILABLE to canada...
but from the feedbacks..he looks like a pretty reliable seller..

In the dark, with original black/white/chrome keypad. The white buttons and screen obviously are not that bright... just a photo effect.

I just bought a faceplate from Lovemoments (that's me in the recent feedback). Yes, they do ship from HK, and the shipping can take a little while, but they're good on their word. When I didn't receive my faceplate for a while, they were going to send another one for free (thankfully the first one came soon afterwards). Friendly folks, I do recommend them

Posted by: wireless t-dot

Thats one nice housing! Why can't Nokia make OEM one's like that!!!

Posted by: GNOSIS

This metal 8390 housing is OEM, according to eBay seller "lovemoments". However, I doubt this because it has some visible imperfections on the outside and there are no markings or logos on the inside of the housing, as I believe all genuine Nokia housings/covers/faceplates have.

Posted by: Tito71

GNOSIS: Is your Metal Silver faceplate really fragile? (for scratches, marks, etc.), if it is... when I will get mine next week, I will not be tempted to use it as my main faceplate....;-(

Posted by: GNOSIS

I haven't exactly tested its durability in any way intentionally or accidentally yet (knock on wood), but for the week that I've had it, I feel that it's sturdy and scratch-resistant enough to have on all the time. No scratches, marks, or dents yet... but again, I have been very careful with it. I could be wrong, but I don't think it's painted at all. I think the metal color is from the metal itself. Judging from only a week's experience with it, I'd say it's a high quality aftermarket housing.

Posted by: GNOSIS

Oh, it just keeps getting better... read this!

This 8390 metal housing fits on the 6590.

I just went to the AT&T store and did it myself. Perfect fit. I was not allowed to put in my SIM card, so I couldn't verify that any or all of the buttons work (phone won't show the menus without sim). However, it is a fact that other aftermarket 8390 housings and keypads, if they fit onto the 6590, then the buttons will work. Keep in mind that the volume buttons do not work on the 8390 with this metal housing, so they probably won't work on the 6590 either. Anyway, when I turned on the metal 6590... oh my goodness... the brilliant blue screen turned on and also lit up the center column of keys (2,5,8,0)... never saw anything so pretty in my life. I had to ask the salesperson for a tissue to dry my eyes.

You know what? I'm fired up!!!!!!! I'm going to go back right now to purchase the 6590. Anyone want to buy my 8390?

I wonder if the 6500 OEM housing will fit the 6590?! 6590 flip!!!!

Posted by: GNOSIS

I changed my mind. I'm keeping my metal 8390.

Good choice... I prefer the white backlight of the 8390

Posted by: Fitso

haven't posted for a while...but got to say that that case is sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Posted by: GNOSIS

Thank you all for your compliments and suggestions! It's been almost two weeks now that I've had the metal housing on, and it's been awesome... except for the non-functioning volume buttons = no voice dialing Besides that issue, there are no others! The housing has shown NO signs of wear and tear whatsoever. Any more questions? Feel free to ask!

I also got a metal face for my 8390 from lovemoments. I ordered the white/silver keypad from him also

Still waiting for mine, nice pictures! how much time did you have to wait to get the faceplate? and can you raise and lower the volume on the side of the phone?

It took 5-6 business days to get to me. Yes, I can still use the volume up/down buttons on the side. The only thing i noticed, that i didn't like, was the fact that it doesn't go on quite as easily as the plastic faces. I'm sure it's because its metal. I love having this face though, because no one around here has it!!

Posted by: GNOSIS

Man, WTF. How is it that your volume buttons work fine, and mine don't work at all?

How do all the buttons on that Asian keypad feel when pressed, compared to OEM?

Maybe your volume buttons aren't lining up quite right. The Asian keypad feels exactly like the OEM piece. It's that same hard plastic. I wish Nokia would make a solid silver keypad (like the menu buttons), that would look a lot better.

Posted by: Mr. Chow

wow looks nice, if i knew the made metal faceplates for the 8390 i would have not sold it. damn i wish they had that for the 8290.

Still waiting for my phone now... it's being unlock and return to me this friday.

Oh you are right! my digital camera was back to 1600x1200 setting...

Posted by: ikonosin

Does anyone sell keypads for the 8390 that are all chrome (like the send/end/menu buttons)? I think that would look a lot better.

Posted by: FrOsTi3v0

it works for the 6590?

Posted by: GNOSIS

Yes it easily fits on the 6590 as well. I figured this out myself when I tried it on the 6590 successfully at the AT&T store. I was not able to check to see if all the buttons worked though because the they wouldn't let me put my SIM card in the metal 6590. I have a feeling they all work except the volume control, just like my metal 8390.

Posted by: Tito71

I will not be able to put my comments for the Metal Silver Faceplate on the Nokia 8390... GNOSIS (and all other Nokia's fan) it would mean a lot to me if you could take a second
and go to the member feedback forum and read my story
under Assamiea (look for my feedback Tito71).

THANK YOU

Hi everyone,
I decided to buy a new keypad. I decided on crystal chrome. Check it out! Compare these photos to the ones I originally posted on the first page. I feel like my phone, and my life (he he) is finally complete. I actually prefer this aftermarket keypad to the OEM... it sticks out just a bit more making them more responsive.

Posted by: GNOSIS

I actually like my phone more in the dark than in the daytime now... just like I do with my women. The colors on this keypad are awesome. All chrome background, clear crystal overlay. The numeric printing is blue. The up/down and send buttons are green, and the end button is red. The keypad isn't quite as bright as shown in the photo, the picture's just overexposed. If anyone wants to see higher resolution photos, just let me know. Or if someone will let me post my pics on their server...

Posted by: iGrooveLA

cool! where did you get the keypad?

Posted by: GNOSIS

eBay seller vmanforbunn for dirt cheap!!!

Pics for GNOSIS:

Posted by: GNOSIS

FYI, these photos are not overexposed. That's about how bright the keypad really is.

The one of the blue keypad looks really nice, too bad its cut off a lil bit.

Posted by: iGrooveLA

thanks for the info! can you tell me exactly which keypad that is??? is that the crystal key pad blue??? clear??? he has a bunch. are the keypads really good quality??? good feel like OEM?

Posted by: GNOSIS

8390 Crystal clear

I was really skeptical about buying such a cheap aftermarket keypad, but I have been proven wrong... so far. Maybe it will fall apart next week. I doubt it though. It's crystal! It feels just a little bit more "pushy" than OEM, and I like it this way. They're the same keypads that are sold in that hard plastic packaging, as you may see on other auctions. The package just says "Crystal Keypad" on the front.

Posted by: iGrooveLA

thanks for the info! i just bought 6 of them! can't beat it at that price! should get them next week sometime! however, i was outbided on the metal 8390 faceplate...grrr.

Posted by: GNOSIS

8390 with aftermarket Crystal Clear keypad. Notice that what used to be the solid chrome keys now light up. The only thing "clear" about this keypad is the crystal... it's chrome underneath the crystal and it's smooth and very reflective, like a mirror.

I walked into a cell phone store in Chinatown and I showed the salesman my metal 8390. He offered $30 USD for it but I refused. A day later I went back there and he said he knows someone in China who will get him one for $10 USD. I asked if he could get more and of course he said he didn't know... (in other words, "No way I'm hooking you up, you stupid American! I hope North Korea wins!")

So is the 6500... all the good 8390 shiznit is from Hong Kong.

Posted by: Balzz

I just received the metal housing. It looks great from far, but the fit isn't quite up to OEM standards. I'm a little disappointed...haven't decided whether to keep it on or not. I actually like the extra weight it gives though.

Had to perform a little percussive maintenance and it looks great now.

GNOSIS,
I've been looking for that 6500 flip faceplate for my 6590 since you posted pics a month or two ago. I can't find it anywhere. Please keep me updated as to whether you can make it fit based on what you just mentioned about buying a 6590. Thanks in advance.

BTW, where are you guys finding keypads for the 6590? I can't find them anywhere.

Posted by: GNOSIS

email Billy at bc@gogotelecom.com for an OEM 6500 housing. If you mention Dr. Jason, he might give you a little discount. He has one on eBay right now, but he actually prefers that you order through email, not eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...&category=20369

I still haven't heard of anyone who was willing to risk $25 USD to see if the 6500 would fit on their 6590. You would be the first, the pioneer, on the leading edge, on the forefront of discovery. Go for it, man. Do it for the team. Do it for your country.

Posted by: flyinvr6

I hear ya....I am feeling pretty bold right now. I may go where no man has gone before. Does the 6500 flip have those tabs at the top of the faceplate?....or do I need to mod it by removing them? Thanks again.

Posted by: GNOSIS

I don't have one near me... I can't remember about the tab placements. Ask atong, I know he has a 6500.

Posted by: GNOSIS

6590 keypads: http://super038sg.com/

The 6500 and 6590 are both 6500 series phones, so if any phone should fit the 6500 housing, other than the 8390, it would be the 6590. Simple logic, right?

Posted by: flyinvr6

Thinking that my current 6590 would let me make calls without rebooting itself would also be simple logic, right? That's a great link....thanks! Of course they are selling that faceplate for $50 which is ludicrous. I may give your buddy a call. Looks like a nice piece. Thanks again for the info.

Posted by: GNOSIS

I will be receiving my new 6590i this Saturday and I will put photos of it on a new thread I'll call "Metal 6590 / 6590i". Yup that's right, 6590i with the 8390 metal housing

Posted by: dementor

Man I can't find the same faceplate as yours ANYWHERE... any ideas? I'm in Montreal, Canada.

Posted by: GNOSIS

Looks like Daydeal.com now has a metal 8390 housing different from mine. It's also on eBay starting at $10 USD, the same price that Lovemoments is now selling hers at.

It appears that it's the same mold, except it's ALL polished and the battery cover has a rose on it. Lovemoments' metal housing is only polished on the top front, the rest is a brushed matte finish... and I like it that way, I'm glad it doesn't have any more polished areas. Polished metal constantly picks up finger prints and oils and smudges every time you touch it.

Yup, the biggest asian mall in toronto(Pacificmall) is sell that one for $35 CDN, me and my friend tried it, it doesn't exactly fit snug plus the keys on the right side(end talk, 3, 6, 9) don't work sometimes, The faceplate itself doesn't feel really heavy either. Now my friend is looking for a chrome-ish faceplate cuz this metal faceplate doesn't fit properly and it has a rose on the back, anyone is Toronto know where to find a chrome case(doesn't have to be metal).

I have this faceplate for my 6590 and it looks awesome. Can't use it with a holster though because it'll get scratched up. By the way....it's not metal, it's a chrome looking plastic faceplate. Either way it looks nice.

Posted by: wakko98

How are the keypads. Plastic? The description said metal? Does it add any weight to it?

Posted by: GNOSIS

Keypads are separate, up to you to find what you want. Yes, the metal faceplate will make your phone 30% heavier, as much as a 6310 phone. It feels good though, in my opinion.

Which image is from the phone with the clear aftermarket keypad? I really like the look of the first image, and I'm trying to buy a pad on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...item=3011416466 Is that the correct item, from the first picture?

Both of your quotes are of the same keypad, just that one is on the metal 8390 and the other is on the original 8390 faceplate. The ebay link you provided is for a 3390 keypad, same seller, same color, same everything... just not for the 8390.
