MarkyBerryUtils

(Reposted by popular demand from BlackBerryForums.com)

Free software recently written by me, for my own use and inspired by BlackBerryForums.com users. Enjoy!

Important note: To enable hotkeys, turn off "Dial From Home Screen" setting in Phone->Options. (You can press the phone hotkey before dialing, anyway). Hotkeys do not work on 71XX series, so you have to manually launch via icon. However, hotkeys works from PocketDay as an assigned key if you need hotkeys on the 71XX series. Alternatively, you can assign either of these mini applications to the Convenience key on the left side of 71XX, or either of the two on the 87XX series BlackBerry units, for one hotkey access. To obtain free source code to MarkyBerryUtils, see the BlackBerry Development section of BlackBerryForums.com.

MarkyBerryUtils Wireless Download:

Download Quick Note Via BlackBerry:
www.marky.com/files/bb/QuickNote.jad (Version 1.0 - Feb 4, 2006)
PURPOSE: One hotkey access ("Q" key) to immediately jotting down notes that is automatically copied to the clipboard. Good for taking notes in a mad hurry, such as writing down spoken information, etc -- Faster than using BlackBerry MemoPad because QuickNote it is a one-button instant text editor. Exiting by hitting Esc automatically saves your note into the clipboard for pasting. You can then use "Paste" to paste the text in another application such as while composing email. Requires BlackBerryOS 3.6 or later.

Download Quick Compose Via BlackBerry:
www.marky.com/files/bb/QuickCompose.jad (Version 1.01 - Feb 4, 2006)
PURPOSE: One hotkey access ("C" key) to immediately composing a blank new email message. Requires BlackBerryOS 4.1 or later (Includes 8700 or an upgraded BlackBerry). This readds the missing missing Compose shortcut icon from earlier BlackBerryOS software, while using the new convenient New Email interface of OS 4.1. Thanks to Ramble at SRA for the first version of the code provided.

Allow me to make this "sticky."

Posted by: Mark Rejhon

Thanks, but I don't think it is really worthy of a sticky. There's much more worthy software than mine. So let's make this thread worthy of being a sticky, let me take advantage of it by giving shameless plugs of other people's free BlackBerry software creations. Some of the best free BlackBerry Software are the following. Copy and paste the below into an email message to your BlackBerry, then click to dowlnoad wirelessly Over-The-Air. All freeware, no registration needed.

Google Maps Mobile
Wireless Link: www.google.com/glm
The Official Version! Yes, it now works for BlackBerry. Draggable, scrollable Google Maps on your BlackBerry. Best thing short of actually having GPS. Enough said. If you have problems, alternative unofficial Google Maps viewers can be found at www.freek.ca and www.bblocal.com.

Berry 411
Wireless Link: www.thebogles.com/berry411.jad
Desktop Link: www.thebogles.com/Berry411.htm
The best White Pages and Yellow Pages search software for the BlackBerry, this also has a built-in bonus of movie showtimes lookup and weather lookup!

BBToday
Wireless Link: blackberrytools.sourceforge.net/OverTheAir/bbtoday-1.5/BBToday.jad
Desktop Link: sourceforge.net/projects/blackberrytools
A very nice miniature PIM "Today Screen" that displays your appointments, number of missed phone calls, number of waiting new emails, as well as today's weather, as well as your favourite stock quotes.

BBReply
Wireless Link: blackberrytools.sourceforge.net/OverTheAir/bbreply-1.1/BBReply.jad
Desktop Link: sourceforge.net/projects/blackberrytools
Ever wish you have multiple different editable "Reply-To:" addresses when writing emails on the BlackBerry? This is the solution - you can now have customizable Reply-To: when writing emails on BlackBerry.

BBLight
Wireless Link: blackberrytools.sourceforge.net/OverTheAir/bblight-1.82/BBLight.jad
Desktop Link: sourceforge.net/projects/blackberrytools
Configures your BlackBerry light to stay always-on when out of holster. Or automatically turns on backlight when you hit a keypress (a problem on older BlackBerry models)! Be warned, this application affects battery life!

BBWeather
Wireless Link: blackberrytools.sourceforge.net/OverTheAir/bbweather-0.74/BBWeather.jad
Desktop Link: sourceforge.net/projects/blackberrytools
Display weather forecasts on BlackBerry on one button click, much faster than BlackBerry Browser. For entering a new city into this weather forecast application, you need an 8-character city code. (The city code is 4 capital letters followed by 4 numbers. Just grab those codes matching this pattern from inside the URL's when viewing weather forecasts at www.weather.com or www.theweathernetwork.com on your desktop PC, and save the 8 character code into the BBWeather software, and viola.)

Posted by: Mark Rejhon

QuickNote updated to Version 1.1. Added Options screen with adjustable font sizes and an auto paste option (for those interested in editing the Copy & Paste clipboard)

googletalk for blackberry's should be added here. it is a great new free bb program.

I keep getting an error message after I try to install the BBLight:

The following modules could not be loaded because their digital signatures were invalid.

I've tried downloads from different providers but it keeps coming up the same.

Has anyone come into this before & how did you resolve the issue?

Thanks,

Lisa

Posted by: phone-aholic

hello Lisa

I've been trying for weeks to get an answer for this issue myself! My desktop Manager wont acknowledge finding "software applications designed for your device". I have contacted Rogers, Blackberry, and Handigo - each of them advises to contact the other for tech support. Please let me know if you get anywhere on this - i have purchased tons of stuff from Hanigo but cannot load it.

If you want to write something of value, then try an Excel viewer..

We could use a good one for the BB that is FREEware..

BBLight gives you extra setting for the screen. Including the option to keep it on all the time (how useless) and such. I didn't find it overly useful.

WOW thank you so much BBlight worked great for me

Can anyone recommend an IM client I can install on my Blackberry 7290 that will let me do AOL Instant Messenger? I can't believe Cingular or AOL for that matter doesn't support an app.

how do you "install" these things? just got my bb 7290 today.

I could be totally off with this advise, but I believe you are getting the message because your memory is full. I've been experiencing the same issue and have noticed other program giving me messages about memory room.

I just did an OTA install of BBWeather on my 7105t. Seemed to go smoothly, but unfortunately all I get is the error message "Error: Could not find a service book entry for IPPP" when I run it. I got the location code from weather.com.

I got that same error when I tried to install the Mapquest app on my 7130e. After doing a quick search, I couldn't figure out what to do about it either.

I found the answers here: http://www.blackberryforums.com/bla...pip-no-bes.html
You need the wap settings for your carrier. I put in the T-Mobile wap settings and disabled the proxy for BBWeather and bingo! Up and running.

My opinions

Google Maps = The ****, loving the quality of the images and simplicity to use

Berry411 = Tons of help, my only problem is 411 doesn't seem to be working for Canadian phone #'s, must be using US database

eMSN = Waste of time, slow as hell not even worth it (M choice = browser = ebuddy.com)

Posted by: Master Splinter

Funny I find this post today. I just went and downloaded Google Maps by mistake while I was in class and shared it with everyone that was there. It's just tight for no reason. The images are good and it's easy to use. It loads super quick on my 7130c too! Thanks for all the other suggestions folks.

Does anyone know how much data Google Maps uses, I'd love to use it but I'm afraid that I will go over on my data limit.

I can't seem to use the white pages on Berry411. When I put a last name in search and wheel click on white pages it returns no documents found. Yellow pages work great.

Thanks for the links. It's a big help to a new BB user.

It tells you as you're gettin around the program. I just had it find one location while in satellite view, and that was 591KB. So, hope that kinda helps put it into perspective....

I ended up finding out that our BES is restricted as there are now virus' for BB devices. Our administrator has blocked all download functions which is why I wasn't able to load this program onto my BB.

I hope this helps.

Works fine for me and I'm in the Caribbean, and I just got back from Paris and it worked fine there using Orange. You shouldn't have any problems using it in England or anywhere you have GPRS.

Also I just downloaded Google Maps and the satellite view is ****** great! Now when I show off my new Blackberry Pearl instead of hearing "cool" or "nice" I hear "damn" and "wow".

It loads fine, but I have a 'null' error message when I try and log on.

I've just downloaded Google maps, and it loads fine, but then I get a 'nullPointerException' error message, when I try to use it...

I'm on Voda in the UK, in good GPRS coverage. Can anyone help?

I'm not a Blackberry expert but it sounds more like a software error than a network problem. Have you had any problems running other software that you've downloaded?

I haven't downloaded anything else, but I'm experience that 'call lag' problem, so I'm just updating to .70 and we'll see...

Thanks.

You may want to try LexSpell : a fully functional and free spell checker for BlackBerry by BEIKS.

It lets you do your job and, if you like it, you are free to spend money on it, but there is nothing that forces you to do so. Kid of like WinZip.

They want $10 for it and then I believe you need to purchase the dictionary too. I'm very happy with the totally FREE BBCorrector.

Wrong on both points:
First, they do not WANT money for it. They barely tell you they'd appreciate your $10 , should you decide to give them. There is nothing that forces you to pay.

Second, you do not need to purchase anything in order to use LexSpell.

Have you installed it recently? I did, and everytime I try to use it, it says:

"No dictionary found! java.lang.ClassNotFoundException"

Then I press OK and get:

"Selected dictionary is empty!"

It also often pops up asking for registration code info. So how did you install v1.2 without these above issues?

Posted by: kolev

I just followed the complete instructions at http://mobile.beiks.com .

What you get happens when you follow the instructions half way through and do not download the language wordlist database.

BTW starting today, there is a new version of LexSpell out there and there is also a British English word list for download as an alternative to American English.

Full disclosure: I work for BEIKS.

Posted by: trainrunna

well thanks I found another site that has some good stuff...

http://www.blackberrytoday.com/software/popular6.html

some of it's free and some its shareware but the caller id program allows you to load ringtones and pictures to the BB's through the usb cable

I am using the bb7100i and it works fine...
but it's only a trial...
most importantly it shows that we can load ringtones directly to the 7100i...
now if one of our tech heads can figure it out...

Thanks...that seems a lot better. I originally started the install the first time from Opera not the Blackberry browser. It then did the download and sent me over to Blackberry browser. When it did that I believe it lost the steps 2 & 3 for me. I had no option for those when I did that. However this time I did and was able to complete those steps. It also this time asked to reboot which it didn't do last time.

I will also say that I find it very slow compared to BBCorrecter and it has the nag screen to register at the end of every use. That to me isn't Freeware.

Do you have plans to make this app FORCE to check spelling every time before you send a mail note much like Outlook does now?

There is no way this is slower than any OTA service, including BBConnector. Under rare circumstances your OTA connection may be faster - and in future in may only get better and better - but presently, the time to send a request and receive response alone is about the time it takes LexSpell to get its job done.

On the freeware issue...what is freeware to you? Is using Google search, for example, free?

To us it is something that gives you 100% functionality without forcing you to spend any extra money.

I must say this is a new distribution model for BEIKS...and that is easy to spot when looking at other our products.

LexSpell follows the model of one of the most successful such applications, WinZip. In all truthness, I myself am not sure WinZip has been openly advertised as free, although many users have called it free, including myself.

As long as you can take 100% functionality without time restriction I still think you are getting it for free. Or should I be saying "at no fiscal cost"? :-)

Posted by: jonyb

I tried the BB411 and searching the white and yellow pages gets no results.

Also, on PhonePix, it only lets me use 1 ringtone.

Posted by: Cartman13

with lexspell and one have a error when trying to spell check an email. when it gets to the end it says add or ignore but shows nothing. i hit ignore and it give me an error. weird.

Posted by: kolev

I understand you seem to have a problem with LexSpell and I am very interested in what exactly it is as we are already heavily working on LexSpell 1.5, but I am afraid your post is a little unclear on the exact setup under which you get the error to display.

Could you kindly clarify?

On a third read, could it be that LexSpell is simply unable to generate a suggestion?

E.g. it won;t show any suggestions for something like "adlkjslfkjsf" because there is nothing even remotely similar to that in the word list.

Does anyone know how to install jar files via USB on the pearl? I have a whole ton of games I downloaded when I was using my SE S700i, I would like to see if they work on the Pearl. However, I have no idea how to install them. I moved them onto the memory card, but can't seem to navigate media manager to the right folder.

If you know how to install JARs via USB, please let me know. Thanks!!

I can't get it to work on my 8800.
It crashes badly and I have to reboot the 8800.

Posted by: kolev

8800 and OS 4.2.0 in particular break some backward compatibility issues.

On top of that, not all problems can be duplicated on a simulator - one needs an actual device.

It took us nearly a month to get our spelling checker ironed and it would have hardly been possible without the help of beta testers.

So...give the developer a call.

From where they stand they may think the application is working fine.

these three apps are great for the pearl. Now i can change my pearl to whatever color I want to match my theme.

Posted by: gregosdge1

just a question about this site phonezoo does it spam your phone? you have to enter your phone number and model # and carrier, there is no option just to have it e-mailed to you, i dont think i trust it, has anyone used this before and if so what if any problems have you had.

Posted by: cdp1276

Does anyone know how to refresh BBWeather so I can enter in some new cities? I have known as I just migrated over to a new device and it locks up my 8800 everytime I go into the app now saying I have no defaults set. However I have no way to enter a default city.

If you use the Today theme you'll be able to see upcoming calendar events on your home screen. That being said keep in mind that it will only display 2 at a time.

When trying to install bbweather, it goes to a screen that says no weather profiles specified and just stays on that screen. I cant do nothing to escape that screen, I have to keep turning my phone off and on. Any Ideas?

Once that message comes up, press the trackball once to bring up the menu and again to set up a profile. Enter the zip code of the area you want the weather and you're done.

Well, I just pulled the trigger and have a pearl on the way. So I thought I would look for some games. I found some FREE B&W games at http://bb.magmic.com/BB/dl.html. These do not have support anymore but they might still run. There are games such as texas holdem, checkers, blackjack, cribbage, freecell, hearts, klondlike, alien land er, and break fast(???). I have to let you know that I haven't received my phone yet so I don't know if they will work.

when i attempt to open bbweather in my home page, i get an icon that says "error and that the settings are not correct, but it pretty much freezes, and i have to do a hard reset. anyone know what the problem is? i need a weather app badly, thanks

Could one of you wonderful dev's figure out how to turn on the flash so it can be used like a flashlight. I Soooo miss that feature of my last phone when looking at the back of servers or under seats in the theatre. 4.3 has it on for the video camera function so I know it is doable. Be awesome if it could be turned on by the side buttons. THanks!

I would LOVE to be able to do that (use the LED flash as a flashlight). I would $$ PAY $$ for the software to be able to do that.

For all you spreedsheet users. It takes a minute to get used to it but after playing with it you will get the hang of it. They have a version that cost money but they also have a free "student" version that does pretty much the same thing.

Not to bad.

If you simply want a program that will use a solid colour on the screen, you can install this one from getJar: Q-Disco Light. It's free and "Turns your mobile into a flashing disco light or night reading light."

You can select a colour to display on the screen. Personally, I think simply turning on the screen does the exact same thing but hey, this one has solid colours and you can change between colours.

I don't know of any apps that light up the LED.

I have to say, there is a serious lack of decent games for the blackberry! DOes anyone know where I can find good games? I'm looking for a good texas hold 'em poker game for BB. I found an amazing one called Mermaid Poker Challenge -- it had amazing graphics and easy to play on the phone, but every single round the computer players would fold, even if I checked. retarded. They must have screwed up in the programming.

It's called parenting. Try it. Either your kid unlocks the phone for you upon request or it gets taken away. Simple as that. Doesn't cost a dime.

I partially agree with what KG4PEQ said above. Your kid should not be withholding anything from you... ideally, but realistically, kids will always have secrets. Although I really shouldn't be giving out parenting tips since I'm not one myself.

if you want to go further than that, you can try to use some social engineering, if you want to be sly about it -- although this probably isn't the best idea because you want your kids to be able to trust you. Ask her something like "i heard that you could do ____??____ on a blackberry, can I try it out?" Then if she agrees, either ask her for her password, or try to watch her type it in. Again... not the best solution, but a possible solution nonetheless.

Did you download it onto your computer or directly into your phone (OTA)?

Use your phone's browser...goto the link and it'll direct you from there and install into your phone.

Google maps is nicely done. Enjoy

there are a few different apps you can try:
- JiveTalk (not free)
- Nimbuzz (free)
- EQO Mobile

Posted by: Pegb856

Empower email viewer is a great application. http://getempower.com From your Blackberry Browser. The standard version is fine for everyday use, however the pro version is a bit faster and more feature rich. There is a free trial. I should point out that it is rumored that the new 4.5 BB OS will have html viewing abilities when it is released (hopefully in the 1st quarter of this year).

Also there is aMaze GPS which is a free mapping application, however it does have a few issues with BB phones. I suggest trying it and seeing how it works for you.

There are so many useful apps listed in this thread, but are they of any use to someone that doesn't have the BB data package on the Pearl? Features like GPS, weather, dictionaries, etc... Can I use them "offline", especially GPS?

And what about a stop watch...Just about every other phone out there has one, why not the Pearl? Any apps?

Oh, and En4cer, I know the Pearl has a unit converter built into the calculator. I would imagine other BBs would have a similar feature. Just open the calc, enter a number, press the menu button, and it will allow conversion to metric or from metric.

I don't know of a GPS app for the BB that has all the maps stored on the phone. If you find one, let us know.

About the stop watch, I have 2 apps on my pearl Stopwatch (more features, but a slightly confusing interface) or TalkTimer which has a much more simple interface with nice looking large digits (easy on the eyes )

If anyone knows a nice looking weather app for the pearl, please tell me. I hate BBWeather. The interface is garbage!! A nice interface like the weather app on the iphone would be nice. I know ppl hate when someone references the iphone, but they simply have nicer looking interfaces. 90% of the apps for blackberry have garbage interfaces. It's like 6yr-olds or ppl who have never heard of photoshop and only know how to use excel are desiging the GUIs. I believe the weather app on the iphone is made by yahoo. DOes yahoo have a weather app for the BB?

Just remember that the trackball on the Pearl is the only model you can change the color on. The 8800 & 8300 series phones do not have the multi colored lights , just the white one.

Happy Berrying!

For the sake of anyone else who comes across this thread, only the 8100 Pearl supports these applications. The 8130 CDMA Pearls only have the white trackball LED.

You guys awarre of a program called "FileLock"?

From GetJar:

it can lock a whole folder.the app starts in last folder that you was and get the password only at the begin. If you say `no` to access permission only once a time,it will be failed to access to your files for ever.you must install it again. NOTICE: In some nokia phones you must set permissions :"Read user data"&"Write user data" to "Always" or "Always ask" first.you will find it in information section.Otherwise it gives an error:"Access denied".

Link.. http://www.getjar.com/products/5964/FileLock

It's UI kinda sucks, but it does just as advertised..Locks certain folders or files on SD card..Now no fear of letting someone "look" at your phone. Basically I think how it works is it renames the files you lock to .lck files and keeps their normal file extensions there, but when you unlock a file/folder, it takes the lck off. I like the prog none the less, and it can potentially evolve into something great IMO. Sorry if you guys have already seen this but...

Meh!

Posted by: adamm22

Why not just use the security feature that's built into the blackberry? It locks the entire phone.

NICE APP. I've been waiting for a decent weather app. I tried out BBWeather, but the interface is ugly. I then found out about the weather PUSH services from Weather Push services (link only accessible from BB) and it was a bit better, but the updates were based on when you installed the PUSH service. The interface was nicer than BBWeather, but it didn't update when YOU wanted it to. It updated either once or twice a day on IT'S OWN schedule with no way to manually update it.

This application is by far the best especially with a dynamic icon! Thanks for the link oakpel! much appreciated!

I know on my Pearl (and assuming your Curve), I can open up Calculator, type in a number, hit the menu key and choose "to metric" or "from metric" and a list of conversions will pop up to choose from.

wow this app is AWESOME, the best I've come across. The last "good" one I came across only updated twice a day (thanks, I can look out a window to get better updates!) This one can be set to update as little as every half hour! And it's a nice interface.

here you go guys...

TrafficEye

It's made by The Weather Network ... same as the WeatherEye application that oakpel posted on the previous page. Just type your phone number in, select your carrier and press Send. It will send you a download link via sms msg.

Nice program. It lets you view traffic cams, gives you updated traffic conditions, current incidents (accidents, congestion, scheduled/unscheduled road construction, etc). Nice little app. I especially like the traffic cams!!

NOTE: I think TrafficEye is only for Canadian users... sorry to all the other countries.

btw, anyone know a good TV Guide program for Canada?? I found the free TV Guide Mobile by Handmark, but it seems like it's only for US users. I downloaded it just to check, and it's an amazing little app... too bad only for US.

no prob.

yeah I'm so pissed about youtube not working with my Pearl. I'm with Telus and the support from Telus said they were "working with RIM to fix the problem" and that they have no idea when it will be fixed. For some reason I have a feeling that they aren't putting too many resources into fixing it. I think they'd lose a lot of money with the ppl who are using the unlimited data plan if they were able to access youtube.

btw, it's not a problem with the streaming video sites.. it's a problem with TELUS!

Anyhow, just curious, but how would you install it after you copy it to your memory card?

To get the jar files, just enter your mobile phone number on the TrafficEye site. When you get the text msg, it should give you a direct link to the jar file. Just write it down and download it from your computer.

well, its not technically illegal, but its not really legal anyways. You can 'technically' get free internet access if you have the $15 Unlimited BB Email plan if you use third party software as it can't distinguish the difference in data (right now).

Therefore, I can't use any of the first party software to surf the net on my phone, so I can't download anything. That's why I needed the files so I could install it directly from my Memory Card, and as of right now, the Opera Mini Browser doesn't support that kind of download...

I am getting a "forbidden error" when trying to install google mobile on my Telus Pearl.
Any thoughts?

Hey guys just curious if there's a good application available where it will calculate my minutes used based on my rate plan, I found Phone Minute Tracker which isn't too bad, but was curious if there was anything better, also if there was something that would track data used? Thanks

when you say "it can't distinguish the difference in data". do you mean Telus or the phone? And when you say First party, do you mean any pre-installed software from RIM?

So you're saying that if I got Opera Mini on a blackberry that has only the Email/IM (no browsing), I could browse for free?

IT = Telecomunications Company.

From what other people have mentioned, RIM can distinguish between the data that is being downloaded/uploaded, however this information isn't being shared with the Rogers/Bell/Telus (as of right now) and no one knows what thats going to change.

By First Party softwore, I mean pre-installed software, and any software that is developed by RIM (or Rogers).

But yes, if you have a blackberyy that only has Email/IM (ie. the $15 UL email plan) you can surf the net at no one cost via Opera Mini.

Check out this Rogers thread:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1311443

I'm not sure if it works for Telus, but I know it works for Rogers, and there is a thread on the Bell board that states it works with them as well.

Hi -
i have a question about this Opera Mini. What about apps that use the internet to update themselves ie: Pocket Express, weathereye? If I was to get the $15 UL email plan from Rogers, would my all my apps still work that use the internet to update themselves through this Opera Mini????

you need to change the internet setting
so under settings>advanced options>browser options> make sure it says internet browser not WAP Telus thing

then take the battery out, put it back in and u should be good to go

You can buy awesome games here:

Bplay.com

read the topic name ...

"Popular Free Software..."

Everyone knows where to buy apps and games... we don't all know where to get the free stuff... hence the origin of this topic.

That site is NOT worth it. It has sneakware (ie pretends to be free but isn't) and sent my phone into an endless loop so that I had to pull the battery. Just warning everyone....

True, but some of the pay sites offer free games; not many I admit, but they do nonetheless.

Hey exstasie... ok good news, I installed Opera Mini on a friends phone who does not have browsing as part of her plan and it works. She has not checked her charges yet -- I told her to use it a bit, then stop using it and check the charges in a day or so online. If she's being charged, then that sucks, if not.. ten that's awesome!!

Anyhow, I'm just trying to install google maps on her phone. I was able to download the jad/jar files to my computer and copy them to her microSD card. I went to the media player, then went to explore and went to where I copied the jad/jar files. I selected the jar file and it seemed to install fine. When I tried to run it, it gave me a weird error message:
Code:
Error starting gmaps $2d210 $2dbb$2d42_L1: Module 'gmaps $2dbb$2d42_L1' attempts to access a secure API

Anyone else having trouble with this? Status just sits there and says "GPS active and updating."
