DivX and MP3 Recommendations

I was using MMPlayer for a while, but it kept locking up my phone and I read on this site that it was very resource intensive and can cause this. So I downloaded TCPMP and that seems to work great for MP3s, except that I can get it to play through my headphones, it will only play through the external speaker on the back of my Treo.

Also, I ripped a movie to DivX and it is very choppy. What file size/bit rate, etc should I use for ripping movies specifically to watch on a Treo?

Thanks.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

Well to listen to mp3's i use pocket tunes. but i've always, even with tcpmp, could listen to music through my headphones. mind you, i use a headset to headphone jack converter, but i can listen to it.
to rip divx movies or even xvid movies to my treo, i use to use pocket dvd studio or even pocket dvd wizard until i got lazy and just transfer the entire movie onto my 1 gig sd card without converting. but if you don't have a large card, those 2 programs are amazing!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 95; PalmSource; Blazer 3.0) 16;160x160)

I have a 2gb card so plenty of room, but the video is still choppy...file size is 700mb

headphone adapter? I guess I can get this at radio shack.

also does ptunes work on the 600?

Posted by: Jivs

well the headphone adapter i dont know if you can find it at radio shack. you can find it off the palm website for sure, but its a specialized part so it'll be a little harder to find and commercial retailers.
do you use tcpmp to play video? i use it and its fine on my treo 650. maybe you have something slowing your treo down in the backgroud? did you install the right codec on your palm?
it should work on the 600, i haven't tried it but i use to use it on my zire 71 and the site said its made for the treos

I use TCPMP. I never installed any codec, the software said it would play DivX and XviD so I never thought a Codec was needed. I tried shutting down all programs, soft resetting the phone and then playing a video with nothing going and it worked better, but was still pretty choppy.

Posted by: Jivs

well the tcpmp i downloaded just had the basic player. but if i wanted to play divx, xvid, and some other formats i had to install separate codes that i could download at the same time. they were just separate .prc files
if that doesn't solve it, maybe you should try a hard reset (but make sure you back everything up before). my palm just recently was "turbo" draining on battery life and only gave me a an hour of talk time, so i just did a hard reset and it worked it was fixed. maybe there are rouge apps in the background killing the resources

When I installed TCPMP, it came with those codecs. So yes, I have them.

How do you do a hard reset? That isn't the button on the back is it? I thought that was a soft reset.

Got my headphone adapter from the palm website and it works great.

Now I need to find out how to rip these movies. I will download the software mentioned below, perhaps it rips at a lower bit rate for smaller viewing screens.

Also, does pocket tunes work on the Treo 600?

Posted by: Jivs

yup...pocket tunes works for treo 600 for sure. it's actually really good because it optimizes the 5-way navigation on your treo. to rip movies use pocket dvd studio or pocket dvd wizard. i dont even bother to rip them anymore...i guess im just too lazy!

Posted by: kc5hwb

So what do you do then? If you don't rip them, how do you get them on your SD card?

Posted by: Jivs

I just transfer them directly onto the sd card without ripping them. Its the same way you would put it on with ripping them, but I just put it on without ripping them. But luckily, I have 1gig sd card so I have the space.

How do you get a movie to fit on a 1gig card? Ive ripped movies to back them up and i can only get them to 4 gig

Posted by: Jivs

really...well i just download shows and movies sometimes...
but the movies that i download are generally 1 gig...but when i dont really rip dvd's though...

Posted by: kc5hwb

ok, so they are being ripped, just not by you. You can't be putting a whole DVD on a 1GB card....most DVDs are 5GB or larger. Even if you just did the movie portion, you would still have 3-4GB. So you are downloading them, already ripped, and just putting them on your SD card, I get it now. You through me with the whole " not ripping" thing, implying that you were putting the whole DVD on a 1GB card.

My card is 2GB, so I have plenty of room also. A friend at work told me to try PQ DVD so I am gonna play with that and see what I can get. The 700MB movie fit fine on my card, but it was real choppy. I am guessing that I didn't have the settings right, although it did play great on my computer.

Really, that's a little strange. I've ripped pretty big movies and they to have been about 700mb. when i play them on my treo its not choppy. actually, i use to use mmplayer and it was choppy because it used too many resources. but i use tcpmp and its fine. it might by the movie, but most probably its your treo, maybe rip it on a lower bit rate? or maybe there are too many programs not giving you enough space on the internal memory?

Posted by: wicked 98z

So where can i get these programs?

Posted by: Jivs

tcpmp can be downloaded for free! other programs, like pocket tunes, mmplayer, and the video conversion software like pocket dvd studio/wizard all come with trial periods, after which you have to buy. you can download them from www.palmgear.com
