I'm not seeing many comments on the hp 6515? Is this thing overpriced, have a fatal flaw, bad reputation? GPS on board a pocket pc platform intrigues me. Anyone have one/use one?

Picked up one last week. Good Reception. Good EDGE. Getting used to the size. Well made. GPS works good with Mapopolis. Love the MS Voice Command. So far very well pleased.

I bought the hw6515 and love it, though I am sad to say it will be going back today. Although not for any problems I found with the device. Mostly because it just didn't work for what I need. I am going back to a phone and PDA. I found I need more phone than PDA. Heavy PIM user, very little meassagins use.

Really great device, the hw6900 series will be even better. Go with a bluetooth head set if you get it. If you want to use the GPS get TomTom or Mapopolis, as they are for door-to-door navigation. Pocket Streets just shows your where you are, not how to get there. The maps are also incomplete. Just most of some cities.

As for over priced.... just a little. Go read the CNet user reviews of the hw6500. For business users, it is a great device.

if you got any questions I'd be happy to answer them.

Wirelessly posted (eimajuno's: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; PalmSource/hspr-H102; Blazer/4.0) 16;320x320)

Its a nice devic but it has one fatal flaw, it does not have WM5. If it had that plus wifi, I would have bought it. I have played with it, right asimplefarmer, and I liked it. Sure it pretty big but once you get over the size, its a great phone. Another thing I do not like about it is the price. A little much imo since it is kinda outdated. If you are looking for a windows device I would suggest getting the 8125. It has more in it and its cheaper.

But it does have built in GPS and 2 (two) SDIO slots!

I was wanting a 8125, until I realized that is had no keypad, except on the screen. I spend 1500-2000 minuntes a month on the phone. The average phone call is only 5-10 minutes. I would be pounding in phone numbers on the display hundreds of times a month. It wouldn't last a year or two under those conditions. That is where a phone like the hw or treo has an advantage for business users. Keys to type numbers into.....

So back I go to a PDA and a Phone.

I cannot recommend the device. I had one for a brief period and the phone quality just wasn't there. That and it was simply too big for me.

There are numbers on the keypad so you can dial from there..... The dialing from a screen is just a bad idea for me. If/when I get a job that I don't talk on the phone nearly as much. I will seriously consider the hw series or an 8125 or the likes.

Nice phone, just didn't work for me.

Great device. I haven't gotten a complaint from a customer yet. Missing a lot of features that I'd want, like wi-fi and WM5. But if you can live without that, this device rocks.

I echo that. Built-in GPS should be on all these devices. Is the 6515 the absolute best? No. Is another one? Not really. I'm real happy with the overall performance of mine and didn't realize how much I could use built-in GPS until I had it.

I believe HP WILL release Windows Mobile 5.0 for the hw6500 series. They have no choice, if they want to compete with the Treo then they will need their phones to support Push Email.

Also, Windows Mobile 5.0 better utilizes square screens. We will also see more software compatible with 240x240 screens because of the Treo 700w. People thought that HP wouldn't release WM5 for the hx4700 but they did.

In fact, I guarantee they will release WM5 for the hw6500.

Also, Pretec makes a miniSD Wifi card that you can use on the hw6500. People say it sticks out, but it actually doesn't.

No WM5 for the hw6500. HP has already stated that.

Though the hw6900 to be released in Europe in the next couple of months will be WM5 and wifi. It will lose the SD slot and retain the miniSD.

In my opinion, it is one of the better phones cingular has. It got the best reception out of my treo 650, bb 8700c, and nokia 6682. Huge fatal flaw, is that it can't really go more than a day with out a charge. It eats batteries, and they need to get it so the phone dumps it own chache, without you manually doing it. I literally could feel the phone get hot in my pocket if i left applications running on it. And by applications, I mean anything, even solitaire.

Personally I can't wait to get my hands on a 8125.

had the phone for a week and took it on a business trip.

pros:
very nice keyboard, easy to use well thought out.
lightweight.
plenty fast as far as performance.

cons:
older os.
physically big, not comfortable in the pocket.
power button badly placed, would get turned on and make calls while in my pocket.
battery life poor, would barely make it through the day and i didn't use the gps at all.

Overall the device definitaly had good points and i was tempted to keep it, but the annoying power button, low battery power, and pricetag made me take it back.

Exactly the info I was looking for and now I'm disappointed. The 6515 is pretty nice for me and I can afford it, but the 6900 will be way out of my range for a while. Oh well. Thanks for the info.

This sucks. There doesn't seem to be a "perfect phone" for me and it's p***ing me off.

The 8125 doesn't have a freakin' number pad and is alittle thick, but it has a 4:3 screen and WM5.

The hw6515 has just a 3" square screen (which won't be bad later when more apps support square screens because of the Treo 700w). It has a keypad AND a GPS. But lacks pocketability and battery power.

So far, no perfect phone for most of us - awesome phones, but not perfect. All require compromises on what all we want.

I did not like the 6515 square screen at all to start, but got used to it and now I can live with it all right. The screen is square so you can have the keyboard "right there". I didn't mind the slide-out keyboard on my SX66, but find I much prefer the easier access.

As I've said before, the BUILT IN GPS is a deal breaker for me.

The supplied belt holster is great for me. I broke the hinge (my fault) and HP overnighted a replacement at N/C. It does fit in my pocket if needed. A tiny flip phone fits in my pocket better, but I'd rather have more features out of my pocket than fewer features in my pocket.

I have always charged my devices next to my bed every night, and the 6515 keeps more than enough charge for a day when I do that. My 21 year-old daughter is always complaining about low batteries because she never charges until it's almost dead. If my battery was always dying, I think I would charge it more often (it's a Dad thing ). Bigger batteries are available if you can't learn to charge more or if you really use it a lot during a day. I also keep a Boxwave Versa-charger in the glovebox in case I want to use extended GPS, or use it way more than usual.

I looked at a friend's T-Mobile Sidekick today and she said it didn't have a touchscreen. Does the 8125 have a touchscreen? Gotta have a touchscreen, I would never get a device without one.

Posted by: duddy

Yes, the 8125 has a touch screen. All Pocket PC's have touch screens.

Posted by: asdrew

Thanks, I found that out. I never realized the sidekick didn't.

Here is a link to HP's 1800 mAh battery and charger: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...browse3/PDP_PDP . You could use the bigger battery and keep the original on hand for extra power. My daughter probably wouldn't keep the extra battery charged either!
