Power of the 903 Speakers

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Was reading on other threads that the speakers could pump more than what they're originally set to. I tested this theory and found it to be somewhat true. I was using Goldwave and maximizing the volume as much as possible w/out sound distortion on custom 30 sec. ringtones. I kept it at 128 kpbs. I'm afraid to go up 192 which I know is the highest quality of mp3 the 903 will play w/max volume because I'm afraid to blow speakers. Before I go ahead, can anyone confirm that the speakers won't blow up if I do this?

Bitrate (when we compare 128 vs 192kbps) has nothing to do with loudness, it`s just compression quality. I don`t think you can blow up your speakers this way.

i heard in HK, there's a mod you can do to make the phone really loud...my friend did this to her phone and it's really really really loud...

Yeah I heard something about that. Is it that rumor that you can change the speakers themselves to better high quality components?

The speakers inside the 903 are made by Yamaha right? I only heard this, not sure though.

I think the audio chipset is Yamaha not the actual speakers, not sure though. Despite the speakers being not very loud, the sound quality, clarity etc are absolutely superb and I havent heard another phone that sounds this nice. And while playing around with surround option, the Yamaha audio chipset used, seems very good.

well i've heard that they tinker with the components inside but i'm not exactly sure what it is...
i'll ask her again tonight and see what she says...

hi BXnys, sorry to digress, but how is it possible to have a pure black 903? did they spray paint over it?

Posted by: chrisl82

I believe its a special edition 903 for Vodafone Smartone, very limited production. I could be wrong, but I remember reading something along those lines. Personally, I like the silver trim that comes on the black 903SH, haha but maybe I'm biased because thats the color I own.

there is a modchip for 903 that u can install on the 903's circuit board,to pump up more volume, but in hk,(i read this off a well know GSM phone moddin/flashin fourm, jerrykee, not sure about the spelling) 903 professions dissagree casue if the person who is modng ur phone got no skills and cause cause proptential short curcuit, and toaste ur 903, i keep my mp3 ringtones at 80 KbPS and amped up the volume by 300% and it pretty nice,

Posted by: Timsta

taking apart the phone is no breeze either.. tried it before.. no fun no fun. same with the 902..

as for soldering modchips.. sigh.. such a risk every time.

Posted by: borgis

how about playing mp3s using the speakers can you also increase the volume as well? or just with ringtones?

Posted by: g81

-So I guess the only way to highen the volume is to modify the playing fine, huh?
-Anybody got some recommendations for good soft for modifying the files?

Cheers,

One soft I use all the time for audio editing is Goldwave (www.goldwave.com) which works quite well, and has a nice little trial so you can try it before you buy, even though the trial lasts most of forever.

about the speakers of 903, is it normal that the left speaker is softer than the right speakers?

id like to recall my question.is it normal that the left speaker is softer than the right one?hope someone will answer this question.=)

Posted by: break-r

i think it it normal
i remember when i had a sony minidisc, the little earbuds that came with it, didnt sound exactly the same
the left side always provided more bass, but the right provided louder treble..

i could be wrong..i havent put any mp3's on my 903sh yet

Posted by: BXNYC

Just buy japanese aftermarket headphones. Way better than the original headset that came in the box. I recommend Sony brand headsets. Certain models fit the 903 plug in. However they're not cheap but worth it if you can get your hands on them.

Posted by: Timsta

yah.. after market headsets are much much better..e ven ipod ones are better than the stock ones

Posted by: hehehe8888

so a ipod earpiece can plug and play in 903sh?

Posted by: Timsta

no no .. u need the lcd remote or the $2 adapter

While we are on the topic of Sound and volume, does anyone else on this board find that they are straining to hear what the caller is trying to say when they get a call? I have all the volume setting on the maximum 5, but still have to press that phone really close to my ears to hear clearly. Is there another volume setting I am not aware of??

Posted by: Timsta

readjust the ear piece to where your ear is .. sometimes. u over shoot the area where you should be listening.. taht happens to me alot

For the Euro firmware, I though the fone's capable of playing back up to 128kbs only? I tired playing 192kbs mp3 but the player was unable to decode it. At the same time, it's only capable to decoding CBR mp3.

Actually, I found out that it can play 192 mp3s. Use goldwave audio editor to convert files.

Posted by: Timsta

it can play 192kbps files... thats been verified many times
