How about a new Today Screen thread to celebrate our new 8125's?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: importluva

Hopefully we can get some good ideas on what we can do to customize our Today Screens. If you all can, please try to upload pictures to a site like www.tinypic.com instead of attaching them and also include a description of what is on your Today Screen A good free screenshot program is MagicSS, (http://www.freewareppc.com/graphics/magicss.shtml)just map it to a hardware button and you're set to go.

I'll start:

Default Today Theme (Boring I know )

Apps from top to bottom:
Resco Today Plugin ($25 www.resco.net)
Calendar (Default Plugin)
Tasks (Default Plugin)
Messages (Default Plugin)
Agile Messenger Status (Free, www.freewareppc.com)
SPB Weather ($15, SPB)

Posted by: hightechlive

here's mine.http://i1.tinypic.com/nq7dop.jpg

Posted by: importluva

I suggested using a site like www.tinypic.com because I can barely make out that attachment (due to size limitations and all).

Would you mind re-hosting it so we can see more detail? Thanks

Posted by: SoberGuy

I noticed the FF logo on that. Please tell me FF has a compatible version for WM5? Either way, I still like that today screen.

Posted by: hightechlive

come on lets see somemore today screens, make it fun people.

the only thing close enough is "miniMo" or Mini Mozilla, but it's still in alpha stage and quite buggy.

Posted by: xcboi02

Here's mine :

With Menu

I'll try to get a picture of the landscape one, it's just expanded a little bit more.
btw that's not my true screen, it's just what it looks like, (screen capture from the program I used to make it)

Here's a landscape shot

Posted by: FarSeide

Our 8125 is sluggish enough. Does this slow down the performance at all ?

BTW, it looks sweet !~

Posted by: xcboi02

nope at least as far as I can tell it hasn't

Posted by: importluva

I haven't noticed any slowdowns using Resco or SPB weather.

And the device isn't as slow as people seem to think.

Posted by: mobilehavoc

But lets not lie to ourselves and say it's a speed demon either...it's manageable but it does have its moment where you're wondering whether it's working or crashed. At least for me.

Posted by: importluva

You know, the only time I have those moments is when I'm browsing hofo and it comes up with a script error that slows down the device. Once you press abort it works again.

But having owned several other PPCs in the past (albeit this is my first PPCphone device) its very comparable.

Posted by: mobilehavoc

I get a lot of slowdown when it checks my email...granted my Yahoo POP3 server has 4000 messages

Also when there's a few network apps running (AgileMessenger or Verichat, using IE, Email, etc).

It's weird though...you can't predict the slowdowns, sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't!

Posted by: Andru1313

Here is mine. That is my Daughter...

Posted by: importluva

very nice so far, lets get this going!

Posted by: importluva

well this thread died pretty quick

Posted by: mp3er3000

is there instructions online showing you to edit the homescreen? thanks

Posted by: gameoholic

Yeah I just want to change font size and color...how can I go about doing that?

Posted by: mobilehavoc

I downloaded a ton of today screens from Microsoft's site and they look/work great in portrait but for some reason when you switch to landscape the background doesn't get stretched out to the whole screen...so I can't really use them.

Anyone got them to work?? Maybe it's just a setting somewhere??

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmob...ads/themes.mspx

Looks like they were designed for WM2002-2003 but they DO work on WM5 just the background doesn't get stretched in landscape.

my today screen using Wisbar Advance 2 w/Wisbar Advance Desktop..

P.S. How do i attach pictures without using the attachment feature because it only allows you to upload 12k....what are the other alternatives....

Posted by: Dhack32

stopped using the Today screen (was getting too cluttered) after I found this program .. kinda like an all in one....so far I like it...what do y'all think?

I've heard of that program, how do you like it so far? What are the main features?

without complex registry hacks you can't really do it easily on pocket pc's native today screens (homescreens are what they are called on WM Smartphones btw).

You can get a program like Wisbar Desktop to do what you want tho.

im running "phone alarm" http://www.handango.com/PlatformPro...163159&R=163159
on my today screen and I love it. easy to move btw profiles and customize when car profile is selected to turn on bt and look for headset or when at work or school profile to turn on wi-fi as well as adjust all volumes. Amazing!

we've been real impressed with it...i've got everyone in my store using it...helps us sell data like crazy; basically it's a little bit of everything in one app. push email, rss reader, IM, weather, etc.....the cool thing is that everything is socially networked (if i see a news article i like; i can rate it & IM it to a friend) a lot of pple on the system have profiles and there's an invite system built into it so you can hear of/throw events and get rsvps .... and that main desktop is customizable...it's all widgets and tickers.

I might have to give it a go when I have some more time, thanks for the info!

BTW, is there a link to this, I saw it before but never bookmarked.

Posted by: Dhack32

their website is www.sakimobile.com; yeah i would definitely recommend it....and it's getting pretty big here in dallas....we're getting requests for it from pple who wouldn't know the difference between a wizard, treo & bberry if you put the three in front of them. they just want the "saki phone"..lol and i got sick of explaining to them it was software; so i just put them down on our waiting list for the 8125.

P.S. one of my reps found it on download.com also:

I have a quick question. When I load an image on my card and then go into settings for the today screen I can choose a image as the background but it looks faded/transparent. Is there a setting to change this? I swear I saw something a week or two ago but can't find it anywhere now. Also, is there a way to make two different versions of the image (for landscape & portrait) and have it switch between the two images depending wether the keyboard is out or not?

Posted by: wookiee2cu

steven_york, how do you install these themes once you download them? How do you uninstall them if you wan't to go back to the factory ones? I looked on the site and didn't see any instructions, thanks for any advice you are able to give.

Posted by: JeffreyCentex

Just copy them onto the phone (preferably the My Documents folder). Go to Settings -> Today and select it...

To remove, just delete the .tsk file...

Posted by: FarSeide

dump the files under \Windows directory...

Posted by: xcboi02

I put all my themes in a "themes" folder in my documents, so I can always just save whatever themes i want online into my mobile directory theme folder on my computer and it'll transfer when sync'd. and it'll show up on the today program.

Posted by: Rino808

hey how did some of you get or display the large batt meter and large icons on the top line of your today screens?? thanks

Posted by: importluva

it seems that people are having difficulty reading the first post. Lets not just look at the pretty pictures, there's also a lot of text that explains what everything is! Wow!

Its Resco Explorer's Today Plugin found at www.resco.net.

Here are a few I did today. I used ThemeMaker M ( http://www.thememaker.biz/tmm.htm ) I just wish I could get rid of the seperation lines between time, calander and so on. I'm looking at WisBar Advance 2.0 as well because it looks like you can do a lot more with it but at the same time it looks very complicated. Anyways, here they are:

Cool. Are you going to make these available for people to download and use or are they just for show?

Also, do you have it setup so it works in Landscape mode?

Posted by: wookiee2cu

Mobilehavoc,
here is a picture with both the portrait view and landscape to give you an idea.

There is only one image and basically it just cuts it off once it's reached it's max. I wish you could use two diffent versions of the image but it won't let you do it. I know the blue nav bars look different between the portrait mode and landscape but I think that's just the screen capture program because it looks fine on the phone. Like I said, I used ThemeMaker M ( http://www.thememaker.biz/tmm.htm ). It's a very easy to use program, straight forward, I think after tax it was $17.50. Keep in mind that these themes basically just change the desktop, not other pages such as programs, settings or anything like that. If you want one of these themes, just PM me with your email address and I'll email it to you. (give me a description of which one) The one with the largest file is only 678kb, so they are very small and won't take up that much room on your phone.

yeah, i do use wisbar advance 2 for the skins and wisbar advance desktop plugin to customize shortcuts, virtual pages, wallpapers....it's set up so that portrait and landscape modes are completely independant, bascially it will use the same skin in both modes but you can customize a different wallpaper, shortcuts etc. on eiterh landscape or portrait....for example, i have it set up so when i tap on the date and time it will take me to a virtual page where i have my weather panel and pocket breeze plugins visible just to keep it seperate from the main page for less clutter....it's a really cool program and easy to use....just go to the forums and download a bunch of different skins perferably to your storage card and then create your own desktop....and your good to go...here is the link....http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/forum/index.php

Posted by: wookiee2cu

strikeIII, where on your storage card do you place the themes? The .tsk files generated from ThemeMaker M program I discovered had to be placed on the phone (My Documents section), otherwise they didn't show up in the settings - today list of themes.

Posted by: Draco098

Spent most of the night tonight working on my Today page. This thread inspired me to take control.

Anyway, some pictures:

I am using:
PocketBreeze
PocketWeather
iLauncher (which doesn't look too great just yet)
Custom theme made in ThemeMaker M

How much of the night did you spend studying for STA 6167 or Graphics class? Anyway, nice screen! (From a dad with 2 daughters in college, they told me all they did was study!)

the .tsk files go in your windows or my documents folder on your device but if you use wisbar advance 2 skins then you would want to store those on the memory card because they can take up quite a nice chunk of space especially if you download a few of them....

Hello, I am new to Howard forums... I am definitly considering this phone now that i've seen some of these post... just out of curiosity would you be able to run drempels as your wallpaper/todayscreen on this device? if that is at all possible, then i would definitly get this PPC asap... I was considering the HP hw6515 or this... still have to do more research, but the more I find out about this the more I like it... I haven't come across as many cons as others said about it... just that it tends to run slow when adding 3rd party apps or running too many apps at once...

Posted by: pardes3

Hi,

I just downloaded and installed a theme (.tsk) ... but I see seperator lines on the Today screen. Is there any way to remove these?

Posted by: importluva

here is my slightly updated one

Posted by: g_ryde213

How do I size the wallpapers so that the width matches the whole screen when slid open. It looks fine when its closed, but once i slide out the keyboard the screen is wider then the image.

Posted by: jeri534

How do you guys get your backrounds without the white tint on them? All my backrounds I add have that .

Also, how did you guys get those dark/black themes?

thanks

Posted by: wookiee2cu

Pardes3, I don't think there is any way to get rid of the seperation lines. I used a program called ThemeMaker M and I even emailed the company asking if you could make the lines transparent and the wrote me back stating that you cannot. The only ones I've seen where there are no seperation lines is when people used WisBar to create their themes. I'm looking at that program but it looks quite a bit more complicated to learn.

g ryde213, basically you will need photoshop or some other imaging program that will let you edit the width and height of the image. I was messing around and to get the image to look right without being stretched I got 640 pixels for the width and 586 pixels for the height.

Jeri534, for what ever reason, they have added transparency or another layer with a very low opacity when you choose a graphic for your wallpaper. I recall reading that someone stated when you chose an image for a background there was a selection for allown tranparency but I have been unable to find that option when I tried it. It looks like most of the people are using ThemeMaker M to create their themes. Here is a link to their site: http://www.thememaker.biz/tmm.htm . I think the program is about $17.40 after tax. It's pretty user friendly, you can change the color of the navigation bars, text, pop up's, just about everything... although you can not get rid of the seperation lines.

On a side note, for those who are using ThemeMaker M, I found that if you are able to resize your image to 640 width and 586 height (measurements are in pixels) you won't get any stretching of your image (makes it nice when your background has a person on it).

Am i the only one thats having problems with Wisbar 2, it runs smooth as hell when i first have it running then it goes haywire and slows my system down this happens for bout 10 mins then it just freezes. You guys got any ideas?

Posted by: wookiee2cu

Drocay, I don't have any experience with this program but here is a link to a forum dedicated to Wisbar, you may be able to find your answer there: http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/fo...ewforum.php?f=5

i use wisbar 2 all the time and i don't seem to slow down at all...keep in mind that wisbar has a lot of features built in the program so if you use up a lot of those features then you can definitely slow your device down that's why i like to keep my add-on's and plug-in's simple.....also, you may want to check the forums and download the latest update for the program and keep posted on it because the author of the program is very good at updating and fixing bugs in the program....this program has probably the best support out there i've seen compared to others....

I decided to go all out and added some things.

-Resco explorer Today Plugin with Compact Theme
-Standard Messaging plugin
-SPB Diary
-SBSH PocketWeather

I'm liking this setup. Oh and I got rid of the bottom bar with the Comm Manager/Battery Status too

How are you finding SPB Diary running? I ran it on my Dell Axim and loved it. When I got my 8125, I installed it and I couldn't get it to load on boot. Total lockup. Had no choice but to do a hard reset and I've been hesitant to try again. I wrote to the SPB folks and they said the application should work on my device, but like I said, another hard reset is not something I'm looking forward to.

Does Diary slow things down for you?

Posted by: jcjdoss

What are the dimentions, I'll see if i can't bust a few out

If some one can make the themes I can make the pictures, send me a message.

Well, I got my answer. :-(

My 8125 is now downloading the Cingular stuff after my 2nd hard reset due to SPB Diary. I was hoping that my device was more stable now than it was before and I'd have better results. Nope. Same exact thing. It installs, but never loads the application on the Today screen and I am unable to do anything. I waited 30 minutes, did multiple soft resets, nothing. I have plenty of free program RAM and the application is installed to main memory. It's just a lock of the Today screen, since applications that run automatically do work. ActiveSync sees the device but never fully connects.

So now I'm hoping that SPB Backup works better than SPB Diary does. I did a backup to my storage card right before trying SPB Diary again.

Oh well.

Curious - are you using a program like Pocket Informant or Agenda Fusion?

Yes, I am. But the first time I had to do the hard reset I wasn't running Pocket Informant yet. I am now (and I had it on my previous Axim).

I use the Getting Things Done Outlook plug-in and as a result, I suspect I have a lot of tasks and calendar entries to keep track of and that might be part of the issue. I know that the built-in Tasks application struggled to load before I installed Pocket Informant. PI seems to handle the volume without a problem.

I will say that this experience made me appreciate how wonderful SPB Backup is, ironically from the same company. Luckily I backed up right before trying SPB Diary again so on the hard reset, I was able to restore from the backup and was back in business in under 20 minutes, counting from when I first did the 3 finger salute.

oh, i just installed SPB backup too. I actually have to backup, thanks for the reminder

SPB finance also seems like a great program. I just don't like SPB weather all too much right now, doesn't seem to update for me, so I guess I won't be using it.

I used it for a while on my Axim. I'm a little hesitant to try it on the 8125, because SPB Diary is the simpler and "lighter" of the two and if SPB Diary doesn't work on my 8125, I can't imagine Pocket Breeze will do much better. But now that I have an easy way to recover from hard reset, I might give it a go. Thanks.

Posted by: MHLY01

I use pocketbreeze on my 8125 no problem ever since I got it. Love the programs along with Ilauncher as well. Sometimes it is alittle slow with contactbreeze as well when using it full screen. Both are great though and the support is excellent on their forums. With it all running, I still have 20.5 mb of ram at startup.

Posted by: importluva

I noticed some odd behavior with PocketBreeze. For my appointment tonight (work), it wouldn't show that I had it It just skipped it for tomorrow. SPB Diary showed it with no problems whatsoever. I deleted the appointment and set it again, and it finally showed up on PocketBreeze. That made me feel a bit uncomfortable. I like the design of PocketBreeze a bit more than SPB Diary (aesthetically) but it seems that SPB diary has more features set up the way I like (for example, hitting the alarm icon shows when the reminder is for; automatically adjusting height on the today screen so the scroll bar doesn't show).

I do wish SPB Diary would include something so you can set your own custom tabs like PocketBreeze, that would be spectacular.

Having some free time today and a recent backup, I gave PocketBreeze and ContactBreeze a try. It's not quite as fast as it was on my old Axim, but it does work. I already had a license for ContactBreeze, and it only costs me less than $7 for PocketBreeze (used them both on the Axim before SPB Diary came out a couple of years ago). I can finally search for contacts by hitting the letters on on the bar, which is the main feature I missed. That, and being able to see a list of upcoming tasks on the Today screen.

I also like that you can now put the icons to the side instead of on top. Doesn't seem to be too much of a RAM drain. I like Resco Today as a launcher, although I switched to the compact skin in order to give PocketBreeze as much room as possible.

Thanks. :-)

Posted by: MHLY01

yeah, works well for me. You can have ilauncher as a tab in PB so the whole screen is PB and you do not lose any space I just got ilauncher because of the tab functions and working together with PB. I have Resco explorer and today plug in as well.

Posted by: importluva

I've updated my today screen AGAIN. I'm now using:

Resco Today Plugin w/ Compact skin
Marsware WeatherPanel
SPB Diary

I've had programs end up in that "limbo" too, where they don't get completely removed but they're not in the list anymore.

I've found that if I "Explore" the device from my desktop and look in \Windows there is usually a folder there for that application. Delete the folder (of the name of the application), and then a reinstall works. YMMV.

yeap, thats what I did last night and it worked

I'm still torn between the two programs, I'm really not sure which one to keep.

IF spb just had custom tabs. I also like the birthday countdown thing in breeze. Decisions decisions.

For those of you that has the default home page (no 3rd party utilities installed), are you all getting multiple appointments showing on the home page?

Myself I am only getting the next one coming up. I checked the box in settings to display "upcoming appointments" yet only the next one show up.

I even created a couple of test appointments on the same day and still only one showed up.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
David

What I found out is that the calendar appointments will auto-adjust. That is, if your today screen is crowded and extra appointments that can trigger an ugly scrollbar on the side will be automatically hidden. Try to remove a few other items to free up the today screen and see if you can see multiple appointments.

Thanks fort the reply.

I just removed everything except my Calander and they still are not showing up.

I have more then 2/3 of empty space under my calander available.

I even just did a soft reset thinking that may help.

Hmmmmmmm

Thnaks again,
David

It is pretty cluttered, but the staggered fonts make it easier to read, and with it clocked up to 240 stable I get most of my information without opening any apps. :-)

Wisbar Advance
Battery Pack Pro - Today Screen Plugin
SBSH Pocket Weather + Enhanced Images
Default Calender Plugin (Pocketbreeze gave me lots of issues)
PocketMax PhoneAlarm (Awesome Utility)

you'd be surprised how much better it looks IRL and when its YOUR info that is displayed. One of the strongest features on a PPC is the today screen - why not utilize it.

But all that is important is that it displays everything I want it to....and by everything, you can see that I mean EVERYTHING

upcoming appointment will only show the next appointment I think, the other option is for all appointments that day I believe.

if you don't like that, you should try out SPB Diary or SBSH PocketBreeze; You can display up to 31 days on the today screen and it even has its own scroller so the nasty gray scrollbar doesn't rear its ugly face

Start->Settings->Today->Items(tab)

Select Calendar, then click options. Change the button from "Next Appointment" to "Upcoming Appointments"

then you're probably going to have to give a program like calendar+ a try (free I think) or programs like SPB Diary or SBSH PocketBreeze

If your background image looks washed out, use the Picturss & Videos app to open the image and then set it as the wallpaper from there. It will ask how much transparency to use. Set it to 0.

Hey guys,

Which do you prefer..."Phone Alarm" or "Spb Pocket Plus3"?

I've installed Spb but it seems phone alarm has a few more gadgets.
