New activation, Unlocked phone

When I first received my new Motorola V551 from Cingular back in November 2004, everything worked great. One day a friend and myself were talking about our simcards. He had T-mobile. Just for fun I put his card in my phone and to my amazement it worked! My phone came unlocked. I checked my wife's phone also, and same thing. Both of our phones came unlocked.

I went to Europe over the summer and took my phone with. I bought a local pre-paid sim, and it worked. The only problem I had was my talk time would not go over 2 seconds. Outgoing and incoming text messages worked great, but the calls were only 2 seconds and then the call died.

I went back to the store I got my sim from, told the rep my problem, and he entered a code in my phone. After that the phone and card worked perfectly. I asked him for the code to put in my wife's phone too, and he gladly gave it to me. It wasn't a big secret or anything.

My questions are,
1. Has anyone else received an unlocked phone from their provider?
2. What was the code that was put in my phone?
3. What does the code do?

1. Some quad-band phones from Cingular do come unlocked.
2. Probably the sub. unlock code.
3. Unlocks the phone.

Prior to the merger that was true, but not anymore.

I know that subsidy codes are 8 or 9 numbers, but the code I got from the guy had #'s and *'s and stuff along with numbers.

just a thought.
