MDA Tips, Tricks, Hacks, and Questions Thread!!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Alex301

Hey Everyone,

As the title says, this thread should be dedicated to items involving your use of the T-Mobile MDA or similar Wizard class devices. The SDA now has a similar thread and the MDA/SDA Superthread is now 73 pages, most of which are discussing the release of the device.

I have been using the UK version of the MDA since December here in the US. My device is both Sim and Cid unlocked. I am currently running the a test ROM from Qtek, been almost a week now and it is running fine with AKU2 and A2DP, I believe that the end of February beginning of March will see thie official release of this ROM Update that adds this functionality. However, I am not sure what the T-Mo US release ROM will be.

Hopefully we can help each other out, there are a lot of customizations that can be done to this device.

I'll start off with the software I have running:

Tweaks2k2: Is a quick way to improve the device without getting involved with hacking the devices registry.
MS Voice Command: A must have in my opinion, uses true voice recognition vs. voice tags that is the packaged software.
Spb Weather: Neat Today Screen plugin that shows the weather.
Resco File Explorer and Registry Editor: A better file explorer and the editor is must if you want to tweak the registry.
Magic Button: Runs in the background and allows you to close not minimize programs when you are done. Helps keep your program memory as free as possible.

As I have stated in other threads, there are a lot of different software options available. My suggestion is to try as many as you like, some are free, some allow trial versions. Once you have settled on the ones you wish to keep, perform a hard reset(returns the device to factory settings) and install those programs.

Cheers,

Alex

This is great. Do you have links to the progs mentioned? I'm also interested in alternatives to whatever TMO will bundle as the IM client (e.g., IM+, agile, etc.)

Posted by: bravo261

going here is about as educational as it gets

Posted by: justyntime

I upgraded to the test rom last night and so far so good.

What do you use as an AIM solution? Im using IM+ but I dont like it. Id rather have classic AIM like on my SK2.

Posted by: quahogian

This site is pretty usefull as well, it kind of just puts links from all over in one place.

http://htcwizard.westlands.org/

xda-dev is as usefull as it gets I'd say as well. Registry Wizard available through xda-dev seems to be a very nice program.

Anyone just have T-zones with the Wizard? How well does it work? I'm sorry if it has been asked before but there's so many threads out there now that it's hard to locate.

- JOhn

Posted by: WRS2K

On the MDA... I come from the SidekickII...

-Does AIM and MSN Messenger stay on all the time like on the Sk2? So if i'm in another app, surfing the web, whatever.. somehow it'll give me notice that someone's messaging me? I've read that this is done through GPRS on the SKII.. I'm hoping the always on option has minimal impact on battery life. i absolutely did not like how the Treo 650 I used to have with Sprint would suck battery life if I had the chat programs on all the time.

-As for e-mail using Exchange... is that an always on connection as well? push email? i love the Sk2's tmail cuz you get it pretty much instantly so it's always on

With the MDA you will need the Internet plan, it will not work with the regular T-zones. I think SDA can work with some changes.

oh crap, you sure about that? i'm using the $4.99 t-zones on my Jam just fine, with the port 80/proxy settings. can anyone else chime in on this?

strongly hoping and thinking tzones is a go on the MDA, cause its fundamentally no different from the jam as far as possible configurations(ie, not a smart phone or regular phone)

Posted by: Alex301

justyntime: I currently don't use any messaging on my device, however IM+ and Agile Messenger are the two big third party ones that people are using and seem to like. I know there is an AIM PPC client that is put out by AOL. It has a cost from the US site, but last I heard you can download it for free from the UK site. I have heard mixed reviews about it.

WRS2k: I believe that the two programs I mentioned above do continually stay connected. Since I have not tried I cannot say for certain. However, they do both utilize your GPRS connection and do not count as text messages. Factory settings on these devices are set to time out GPRS, so this may cause a problem with the continued connectivity. I have a hack in place on my device that keeps my GPRS connection open continuously. This always open connection has not had much effect on my battery life.

Posted by: Alex301

WRS2K: In regards to always on email, that is a little trickier. I believe that the SKII works through it's own server which the device syncs with for email, internet, etc over the GPRS connection. With the MDA, things will work a little differently. If you are using an email address that is supplied to you by T-Mobile or Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail for that matter, you would set up the account as a POP3 account on your device in Poacket Outlook. In there you would set the interval for how often you want it to check for new messages.

True push email is available in one of two ways. The first is the email you have is on a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 with SP2 installed on it. If this is true, then when the update for the device comes that has AKU2 on it, could be with this ROM or at least by beggining of March(hopefully), you will have an Exchange Activesync connection that will push the mail to your device, similar to a Blackberry.

The other option, the one I use since my corporation is working on Exchange 2000, is I use a desktop redirector that runs on my work computer and pushes the mail to my device.

Hope this helps,

Alex

I'm surprised and disappointed that users of the SDA and MDA + internet plan don't get a tmail internet account like Sidekick users. Why not??

Posted by: WRS2K

Not only that, but that they don't allow tmail to be transported over to the plan that's $10 more than the Sk2 plan which includes unlimited text. I wish the $29.99 included unlimited text. 300 is good, but totally diff than unlimited.

i'd love to have a sk2 style personal tmail included and deal with my work stuff via Exchange.

I am positive, I was never able to loaded it on the MDA. It maybe because of the T-mo cabs not sure.

What area are you in? And what steps did you take to make it work. Can you post them, I will try them out in a day or two again.

Thanks

Here are the links for the software I use:

Magic Button

Voice Command

Spb Weather

Tweaks2k2

Resco File Explorer

Also here you can get the free AIM client from AIM UK.

Mohit, when did you try the MDA?
If so, what is the default APN on the device?
If t-zones doesn't work, I guess some Qtek ROM update will be necessary

Awesome!!!
So tell us, how is it?
What about t-zones? Can you confirm that it's not possible to use that plan at all?

You wrote this before, and I asked: "How are you so sure about that"? I don't recall reading a reply. Do you work for T-Mobile, and that is the official line they are telling their reps? If so, that doesn't mean it's true. In fact, I doubt many reps would tell customers that you can tether a laptop to the Internet via the T-Zones plan, using a proxy server. (Many reps probably don't even know that, and I'm sure T-Mo wouldn't want that advertised.)

(I'm sure it's only a very small percentage of T-Mo customers, mostly geeks who write here, who access the Internet via T-zones. Most accept what they're told, that they need the more expensive data plan.)

If they do have it locked somehow, so that out of the box it cannot connect via T-zones, it is probably possible to hack it, unlock it, etc., so that it can do so.

I got a chance to play with the MDA at my local t-Mobile store for about 30 mins this afternoon. Here is a short list of what I obeserved so far:
1. Switching from portrait to landscape sliding out the keyboard is quicker than I thought it would be. 2 - 3 seconds.
2. Keyboard - for those of us with big thumbs, it WILL take some getting used to. Had to use the tips of my thumbs to prevent mis-keying.
3. Google GLM - when downloading, the option to launch after download was grayed out. Any ideas on how to get around it?
4. Google GLM 2 - was able to download part of the file, 683 bytes. Not sure that was the full download. Also, I could not launch the file to install it. I am hoping this is the regional issue (if there really is one). I have been able to download GLM from my home on a t-610 which is a different cell than the store. Will find out about this on Monday afte I buy the phone and bring it home.
5. Google - was able to partially load www.gogle.com/pda. Did not get the usual google image above the search box. Also, when I tried to search, was not able to complete. Error indicated disconnection. Not sure what data plan the store guy had on his account.
6. xstreamxm.com/mobile - they have an issue on their website with WM5 devices. Indicated on the login screen. Hope they get that one straight. I registered for a 3 day online trial back in Oct and can still use it on my WM2003 PDA. Used it last night.
7. Generally, I am thrilled so far an cannot wait until Monday.

Posted by: brightcell

Maiki,
I asked this question many times about the t-zones plan but nobody gave a definitive answer on that.
I am hoping that Tmojay (T-MO employee) can tell us for sure.

The iMate Jam works with t-zones, the Qtek 9100 works as well... why the MDA wouldn't?

Posted by: WRS2K

my rep told me they ain't shipping the mda till the 21st since the 20th is a holiday presidents day????

Hi, I was wondering if the MDA came with AIM ( like the sk2) and also what programs can i add to make the internet bette or diffrent and anything else thanks!

i like it but i need to realize that its wayy different and its going to take time to get used to. i sort of set up my work email (@t-mobile.com) on it as an alternative to blackberry. the live 'push' email isn't exactly going to work yet but at least i can be connected if i stop using my 7290. you must do a send/receive if you write an email it seems but i can receive new email every few minutes from my t-mobile e-mail.

Posted by: justyntime

the signal strength on my 9100 is really bad??? My SK2 gets full bars pretty much everywhere I go but my 9100 has yet to get anything more than two bars. Ive tried diff ROMs and no diff.

what else can i try?

No, MDA uses mini sd card.

@tmail.com email addy's are for sidekick users only because those email addy's go through Danger's servers.

We do get however an addy @tmomail.com

Posted by: kdenninger

I use the Outlook Email capability directly to my home email server. Works fine. Beware that they botched the SMTP protocol somewhat (the "HELO" command does not have a dotted domain on it as the standards require!) and some mail servers will throw up all over that.

You also need authentication (e.g. POP before SMTP, or authenticated SMTP) for most servers due to anti-spam features that prevent outside relaying. I have this (I write anti-spam software) so there's no problem there.

I've got the phone mirroring all my email except for mailing lists, and it works fine.

As long as POP e-mial is supported on the MDA, it should work. I was able to set this up with the SDA.

Posted by: Alex301

tmojay: Could you let us know what is the ROM version on your MDA.

Start >>> Settings >>> System >>> Device Information

Thanks,

Alex

Posted by: Alex301

POP3 email is supported through Pocket Outlook on the device.

Posted by: gremlin000

The demo MDA I used in-store a little while ago was 1.8.something I believe...

Sorry, bad memory.

Posted by: Alex301

Hmmm, I believe that implies that AKU2 and A2DP are not included. I think it would need 2.x for that update, but that is just speculation on my part, from the test ROM that I am using.

Posted by: Alex301

OK, so here are the two different cradles that I have tried.

http://www.thepocketsolution.com/Me...Product_Count=5

This one I just recieved. Has a good build quality, however I wish they had tilted it more. The inluded stylus is cheap but it does glow a cool translucent blue when it is placed in its hole that also has the blue connection light. You can also find this one cheaper on Ebay, which is where I bought it from.

http://www.mobileplanet.com/product...&asource=124862

This was my first cradle. This one is the opposite way, makes the device stand very straight up. Not much support for the device if you are planning on performing screen taps while in the cradle. I use this one now at home purely for charging. I believe Boxwave has an upright cradle similar to this one, not as sleek looking in my opinion but does offer more stability to the device.

Alex

Posted by: oopl

Didn't know that it comes without a dock.
Hmm, both docks don't seem that great.

Posted by: Giedrys

There was a bit of confusion about the BT version on MDA.V1.2 or 2.0?Does anyone knows for sure?

Posted by: djayrage

How were you able to setup POP mail retrieval for a @tmail.com address? Danger (@tmail, @fido, @suncom) does not suppourt POP mail retrieval.

I did beta testing on the MDA with T-zones and it worked. I have the h6315 with data and voice plan. I just took my SIM out of the h6315 and put it in the MDA and worked great. Been salivating in anticipation of getting this unit.

Thanks for the linke, that first one has some nice cases.

Sorry. Slight misunderstanding on my part. What I was able to do was to setup my personal and corp e-mail on My T-Mobile. My corp account has access via Outlook webmail. I set up the corp account e-mail on my t-mobile and then used the POP settings on the phone. Incoming and Outgoing servers are set to myemail.t-mobile.com, username is your <phone #>:#. Each e-mail account you set up in my t-mobile is assigned a #.
I would think there would be something similar to accounts/servers/access on the listed @xxxx accounts. Might check with Tech support to see what's possible.

I've been using PDAs for about 10 years now. I would always recommend a screen protector. I never use it without one. There are alot of different kinds out there, but the best are from www.ppctechs.com

The quality is not even close to the ones you buy in stores.

Posted by: gizmobug

I think I read somewhere on the forum that since the MDA uses a mini USB to connect and charge through your computer, you could potentially use other usb-charging cords on the MDA. For example, my wife has a 7100t (with car charger and wall charger)...does anyone have the electrical specs on the MDA as compared with the Blackberry 7100t? Could all of the 7100t chargers be used on the MDA? Don't wanna buy the thing and try her car charger just to find that it fried the thing....

Posted by: gremlin000

I have an old Blackberry charger for my former 7100t that I plan on trying with this unit. I don't anticipate any problems.

Posted by: ustna

same here...

Posted by: kdenninger

Any MiniUSB charger cord will work fine. USB defines the electrical specifications tightly enough to prevent problems.

During Beta testing, a copule of people reported connecting to their TIVO system setup for remote playing of programs in their hotel room across the courntry. Video was not a problem playing on the unit. I did not get a chance to test with the new iPod video MP4 format but Windows media does play it on my computer.

Why do you need a cradle when you can sync it via bluetooth, lesser wires running thru your desk anyways..

at least thats how I did mine

I think that WM5 did away with bluetooth synching. Only USB and infrared (who uses that anymore)...I think activesync 4 made that change...you could downgrade though...

oh crap.. so you are telling me my future MDA will be SOL with BT sync. But right now, I have active sync 3.8, (which, is the one I use with my HP 6135 BT sync).

So I should just keep using Active Sync 3.8 with my MDA?

this seems like an awesome deal. However, for those of us who dont need that big a memory, (I, myself, is happy will be happy with a 128 or 256 MiniSD), where should I be looking for deals outside of www.dealram.com

Mr. KDenninger, please confirm that BT Sync STILL works with SDA. If on SDA, I would hazzard to guess also on MDA.

BT Sync still works with WM5.0 and Activesync 4.1.

It's WiFi sync which has been disabled.

Posted by: Alex301

I have used Blackberry chords and they work fine for both charging and syncing.

As for screen protectors, as has already been said, this is a definite must. Obviously which brand is better is a subjective response around here. I am using screen protectors by Boxwave. They are highly regarded by some people and I have been happy with it. Been two months now with the same one and don't even need to think about changing it. Much better quality than the cheap store bought ones I got for my old Blackberry.

You can find them here:

Boxwave

Oh they also sell the versa charger that alot of people like since it is a car and home power plug. I haven't used it so can't say much about how good it is.

Here's one question, I think if answered, will benefit plenty of hofo-ers..

How do I get the MDA to display Chinese (traditional and/or simplified).

I was able to get the HP 6315 to do so, (input/output), but before I intervene with the stuff I used on HP, is there already an established way to do so on MDA?

Yes, unfortunately. I don't know why so many phones use these, regular SD cards are also very small.

Regular SD cards come in sizes up to 2 GB (good if you want to put a lot of music on the phone, perhaps videos as well) mini SD only up to 1 GB.

It would probably work--if they existed! Where have you seen a 2 GB mini-SD card? I've only seen them up to 1 GB. (There are 2 GB SD cards (non-mini), perhaps you have confused the two?

I'm not sure that's true. Perhaps no problems, but I don't think all mini-USB chargers are interchangeable.

For instance, my SMT5600 has a mini-USB port for charging. I saw a car charger in a store for another phone, that had the same mini USB plug. I bought it. It fit the phone, but didn't charge it. I returned it to the store, and ordered a charger specifically for my phone.

They may have different voltages, etc. There is more at play than the type of connector.

I am hoping my car charger for the SMT5600 will work on the MDA, since both phones are made by the same company (HTC).

I am almost certain that the 2GB will work. Lets say this, I have yet to see a post saying that it doesn't. Here is a link to a thread that discusses the cheapest places to buy the cards.

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=837165

Posted by: Alex301

OK, so I just read that thread, seems there isn't any credible place in the US to purchase a 2GB miniSD. I need to start reading these things before I link them, sorry about that. Anyway, I have heard good things about Moby Memory based in teh UK and I believe they ship to the US in case you don't want to risk Ebay or any of the other solutions presented in that thread.

With some exceptions, I would say it is a fairly accurate write up.

damn, I hope the 2gb minisd works, I already ordered one and its supposed to be shipped the 21st.

Ultra: The 2 GB will work fine, you did order a miniSD right?

I've seen the 2GB cards on Ebay and on Newegg.com

Gmail uses nonstandard ports for their email, so you have to specify them in the server setting.

Here's the trick: for incoming, use

Be sure to set 'Require SSL connection' to on, and 'Outgoing server requires authentication' to on.

Works like a champ!

I'm testing out programs for use with the MDA, and can't find the "Registry Wizard" that someone mentioned on xda developers. Could someone post a link please?

Posted by: antsony

i was able to get my MDA working with the microsoft exchange server with my work at t-mobile. now it works just like a blackberry entertrpise server, it updates wirelessly. also got my 1GB miniSD to play all my files from my napster windows plays-for-sure files!!

Posted by: metalzo

And for those of you using the screen protectors (Boxwave or PPC Tech) do you use the "crystal clear" or "antiglare" varieties? I don't really understand why they have two different ones for the same price, why would you not want antiglare?

Posted by: UltraSonoMan

yea it was 2gb minisd.

Here is one from newegg and it's a good price.

According to the CNET review the MDA will not have G Wifi. Can anyone confirm this? And if it's true is this just a registry setting that can be tweaked to use G networks or a hardware issue?

Quote:
In addition to the IrDA port for beaming contacts, you get Bluetooth (good for wireless headsets and syncing to your PC via ActiveSync) and--drumroll, please--built-in Wi-Fi (which comes with a helper application that logs you on to T-Mobile's network of wireless hot spots), including support for WEP and WPA encryption; unfortunately, the handset works with 802.11b (not g) networks only.

I believe that it is a registry hack. G is built in and the thing is just "downgraded" to B.

Posted by: Bcollins521

I am going to be in line with all you other folks are waiting for the MDA to be in my hands....couple of questions....

1. Screen protector....which is the best one to get and where...need links

2. Case....who has used one or some to tell which one is the best....I would like a side belt clip case/holster...to where the phone will lay sideways..

Once those two questions are answered for me I'll be in good shape!

Thanks,
Brian

Posted by: Talon402

That is correct...however, PPCs aren't really designed for 11.0 MBPS transfer..."G" speeds on the Wizard are probably only burst speeds, and I doubt anyone who has enabled the registry hack actually attains anything above 11.0 MBPS or even close to it. Its just not made for that type of data transfer, hence the built in disabled G.

The case that comes with it will have the device laying sideways, with a sturdy belt clip and a magnetic flap cover.

Cool....I didn't know it came with a case....one less thing to buy!

Posted by: maiki

Does this look like a good case for the MDA?

I wonder if it opens in both directions, landscape and portrait?

In looking for it for sale in the USA, this seems to be the same case.

Posted by: Talon402

That is for the Universal, not the Wizard. You want a case that is for a Qtek 9100/Imate K-Jam. Check the same sites, they'll have them.

any g network should be backwards compatible with b devices...

Posted by: metalzo

Not true. Lots of B devices don't recognize G networks, depending on how they are set up.

True, you have to be sure the device is set up in backwards compatibility mode. If they are set to G only, your B won't connect.

Yes that's what I'm worried about. Public/private networks over which I have no control may be set to G only and therefore not be picked up by the MDA. Unless a registry hack can change that. If the hardware is the same as the G enabled versions of the Wizard, it should be possible.

I am thinking of trading my sda in for an mda and i was wondering can you surf the internet with stylus and tap links and it will go to the website? Also how is it navigating the phone? I have trouble navigating on my sda because that joystick is so small and my thumb just slips off (they should have rubber coated it).
Is that a 4-way directional pad on the front of the mda? Thanks

with AKU2 and A2DP is this what you need to do the GAB? (Global address book?) I have semi-push email right now with my MDA and the Exchange server at work ( @t-mobile.com). Most of the time my messages are coming before my Blackberry beeps. I don't have to do send/receive.

Yeah, it is a 4 way Dpad, but unless you have oger fingers you shouldn't have trouble using it...You don't even really need the stylus to browse the web, the Dpad will select links, and the center button will open them. One handed.

I think I wrote before that 2GB miniSD cards don't exist. It turns out they do, I was wrong. Just a couple smaller manufacturers have them available yet though.

I have seen Sandisk ones advertised for $79.99. The only thing is, no one has them in stock yet. If you're not in a hurry to get one right away, I'd suggest waiting a couple weeks for the Sandisk minisd 2gb.

My guess is that yes, the 2GB card will work on MDA and SDA. But yes, it would be nice to see a confirmation from someone who has tried one.

Could you please tell us how you got your MDA work with Exchange.

I have an Exchange account at work, and I was told it won't work as Exchange on anything other than a work computer. I can access the e-mail account at home, but only via either web mail (OWA), or in Outlook as POP3 (not Exchange).

How did you setup your MDA to connect to an Exchange server?

I know the pages I quoted said for the QTEK 9000. But the picture looked exactly like the MDA. And it looks like that case will open in landscape mode. (I wonder if it opens both ways?)

Whereas the pictures for the case for the 9100 (such as your quote) do not look like the MDA, and it appears to only open in portrait mode.

I wonder if they put the wrong pictures with the wrong cases, or just had the wrong model numbers listed?

Amazing!, I post a question about corporate email in a separate thread and within 1 day it is closed. Great suggestions were offered but, No definitive answers were identified.

Some said use OWA Outook Web Acess. May not possible for me due to physical security key requirements, unless I can use a USB secruity key with the MDA.

Other suggestions about active synch seem possible but I have no details on what settings are needed or what exchange intervention is needed.

If anyone has used the MDA or SDA with a large coporations exchange basd email and not had their IT department intervene, please let me know how you did it.

I do have an mail in ot a collegue that uses a Treo and gets email to his phone. Waiting to see how he does it.

thanks for all the help to this point. Is it normal to close a thread so soon? Or is it a moderators choice when they think all the bases have been covered.

This forum and it's contributors have been fantastic, many thanks

I'm thinking your friend with the Treo is running Goodlink's email software to get his corporate email. OWA is probably the only option I have once I get the MDA, at work we recently setup OWA for external access so if I have the unlimited plans that would work out fine. As far exchange and the MDA I am assuming the active synch option has to be turned on by the exchange administrators for that feature to work.

Posted by: innocentagain

I just got home from spending a hour with a live MDA at a local T-mobile store. Just let me say...wow. I am a current Treo user, so I'm not a newbie to smart phones or pda hybrids. First off, the screen was super crisp. The colors of the screen and display remained vibrant. Secondly, .....screw the break down, the phone is awesome. I inserted my sim and made a few calls, no one complained of any distortions or problems.

The store that I went to was very friendly. They had no problem letting me spend 50 minutes using the phone and surfing the internet, and going through the many menus. The manager also said that he would let me upgrade to the phone on Tuesday morning (something that CC said I couldn't).

After spending a little more time with it Tuesday, I'll post a full review. Please free free to ask any questions.

One side note: I didn't notice the fast edge speeds, oh well.

bixby,

I have used my WM5 based smartphone with my corporate e-mail account.

Now this process is typically only available if you company has outside access enabled. For like blackberry push e-mail access.

The key is that it is not done directly in pocket outlook. But it is done in ActiveSync. With WM5 (may be later 2003 versions), Activesync has the ability to syncronize directly with an exchange server. You have to select sever sync and specify the exchange server to connect to. In my case it is the same server as my outlookweb external access web site.

Once done it will let you select what to sync. One of the options is "Mail" apart from Calender, Contacts etc.

You need the $19.99 or $29.99 internet access plan for this work everywhere wirelessly.

I can post specific instructions on this when i get the MDA.

My question is now...will this work witht he Total Internat plan at $19.99, or will you have to add another $10 bux to get Corporate MyEmail added so that Tmobile allows you to sync to your company's Excahge Server?

Posted by: bixby

My weekend support folks think I may be able to use active sync to get my corporate email but I will need to verify with the Outlook folks Monday. If so it sounds fairly easy and no need to use OWA.

I also have the same question as Rxr, do you need the my email plan option or the $29.98 total internet only. I wonder iWhat is the + corp email option, Blackberry only or some other method of getting email?

I'll post here if and when I get my official company answer.

thanks to all who have offered their advice.

Anyone know if Google Local will work on the MDA?

Has anyone else noticed how slow the MDA is? Opening simple apps and menus sometimes causes it to hang for minutes. And this is before I installed any of the today screen plugins. That made it even worse...

But I'm sure its not just my phone because I've seen it happen with 2 other MDA's.

All MDA's are the same. As are the Qtek9100 and K-Jam. I've been saying this ever since T-mo announced the MDA. It is a terribly slow device, add any apps and it only gets slower.

Yep its official...

I just installed SPB PocketPlus and its moving about 3 times as slow as before. It takes a good 15-20 seconds(if I'm lucky) just for the today screen to load.

Just got off the phone with "My Guy" at local store and here is what he has told me so far.
1. I have one with my name wrotten on the side of the box.
2. The Walk In, no activation , no upgrade, out the door have a nice day price is $479.
3. At least in his store,Corporate Store, they will not know what the deal is as to New Activations, 1 Year and 2 Year Upgrades until it hits their computer "around" 09:00 AM EST.

So I am supposed to call back and see what the deal is in the AM. I am lucky that I have a Off Contract number so I can upgrade. But, being it is loaded with Grandfather Features and they have totally put the "sc_ews to me when doing anything to that acct, I may very well just haggle an outright price.

So, I will let you al;l know. I was also told they were allocated 15 units, and they are not a huge store. He also stated that the calls and attention that it is getting is unreal. Shocking LOL

the guy at the store is a moron.. 1 year is $399.99 - $50 mail in 2 year is $349.99 - $50. New Act is $399.99 - $50. As for haggling on the retail price.. good luck. Corp stores can't take a penny off the retail price.

does the mda have a vibrate funciton?

Posted by: maiki

What do people think of the following case:

http://www.thepocketsolution.com/Me...Product_Count=3

I wonder if the case can really function as a stand when typing on the keyboard, as in one of the pictures? (No mention of that in the description, just showing in one picture, it might be a phony picture. I don't quite see how a case could do that, and one would think they would advertise it if it could.

I'm wondering how such a landscape-opening case would be when using the MDA as a phone, in portrait mode.

I guess if one is going to use a case that stays on the MDA, rather than the kind that comes with it (which you take the MDA out of to use), you have to choose between one that opens portrait (like most PPC cases), or one like in this URL, that opens landscape. The problem with most portrait-opening cases--you cannot open the keyboard with the case on.

Whew! Expensive phone. I don't recall seeing prices that high for phones with activation before. Are you sure about that? When I asked at a store last Thursday, I was told he wouldn't be able to tell me the prices before Tuesday, when it will be on their system.

He said that, since my contract expired a couple years ago, that I might be able to get a better upgrade price than what a new customer would pay. (But again, he could only find that out by putting my info in the system, which didn't show the MDA yet.)

I wonder if I could get a better price via retentions?

Also, I wonder if the price will drop significantly in a month or two? It seems like some phones (RAZR, for example) cost a lot more when they first come out, then drop significantly. Waiting would also give time for bugs to be worked out, and time to read reviews of it. (Of course, I'm as eager as others to get one soon, but it might be more sensible to wait a while.)

You have to remember this is not a regular phone like the Razr. It's a pocket pc. Just look at a stand alone pocket pc, they go for $300-$600. So this will not drop at all.

Can you send a direct link as to where you got your google local? I have not been able to find it for a WM5 device. Thanks!

www.google.com/glm
Select Generic
Select Advanced or Basic mode
You could also try the Audiovox SMT
See if you can load it.
What did you access earlier?
One other thing you could try is just go to www.google.com and try and do a search. I just got back from a store to try it out. I was able to get goolge.com/pda to load but when I tried to do a search, I got a timeout message instead of my search results.

Can i perform same registry tweaks on MDA to get identical results? Is there any significant firmware differences between 8125 and MDA?

For those of you that have acquired the MDA, have you been able to find the MIDlet manager for running JAVA apps? I have gone to corp stores twice to 'play' with the MDA and have not found the MIDlet manager anywhere. If it is not there, I doubt that JAVA apps will run.
The Qtec 9100 has the manager. http://www.mobile-review.com/pda/re...wizard-en.shtml

For me, this would be a MDA killer. If T-Mobile decided to remove the MIDlet manager..........ARGH!

Its not VISIBLE on the SDA, but its THERE.

I found it and added a shortcut to the start menu.

Can someone with an MDA to look (using the Explorer from the ActiveSync) to see if the file "jmm.exe" is in the Windows directory? You'll have to turn on viewing of system and hidden files....

Ok. I know this question has been asked...but after my searching, I still don't know which way to go. (And maybe this should be a poll...)
Which IM to use?
- Built In for MDA
- IM+
- Verichat
- Agile messenger

Thoughts? Any good reviews? The only one that is "free" comes with a cost (e.g., SMS)...the built in one (but I guess the others use SMS too for "standby" mode)...

HELP!

So I'm picking up my MDA tommorow, and I have the 4.99 grandfathered t-zones plan... will it work with Edge? No one can give me a definitive answer everytime I've asked

Yes, due to being a PDA, it costs more than most phones. That doesn't mean the price won't drop. Prices on all electronic products drop with time, And prices on phones, including PDA phones, sold by carriers, often drop considerably from the price sold at first.

How did you setup your MDA to connect to an Exchange server?

i got mine set up with active sync to my exchange server. it uses an sms to alert the phone to download a new message though. so be careful if you dont have a good or unlimited sms package. there is a forthcoming update to keep your device securely connected to the server at all times via https

Posted by: tmojay

when my messages screen is open/on top and a new message comes through such as an email the mda doesn't give me an audio alert. is there a way around this? its fine if i am sitting in front of the device but if i walk away from it, that can be a nuisance if i miss an important message.

also, i hate the notification that my SMS has been sent. not so much being told it got sent, really, but the fact you have to hit 'dismiss' or OK to clear that message popup after sending a message...plus it beeps. i couldn't find a way around this.

that is because no one really knows. depends on your location, what tmobile decides to do. most likely even ifyou get edge it will be hindered because some ports are blocked using the t-zones plans

the prices I quoted are what your going to pay. you might get a break from retentions but no more than 50 bucks. I recommend waiting 3 mnths till the price goes down if you don't want to pay that much.

How could anyone give you a definitive answer? The MDA won't be released until tomorrow. Very few people have them yet.

Try it out, and let us know. (Do you know how to set the proxy?)

It should work fine it's just like any other pocket pc

Huh???

You were responding to a post of mine, but I don't know if you were aware what you were responding to.

We were referring to whether or not the MDA will be able to connect to the Internet for someone with a T-Zones plan, and not the data plan. Wjhat does "just like any other Pocket PC" have to do with that? "Every other Pocket PC" is not a T-Mobile phone.

I have another Pocket PC, an IPAQ 2210. As it is not a phone, it cannot connect by itself to the Internet with any type of account. What does "just like any other Pocket PC" have to do with the subject being discussed?

For the SMS sent notification atleast there is an option to turn it off in the settings in the text messages utility. I will post specific steps if needed once i get mine today.

On the phone with PDA CSR. He could not find Midlet manager nor jmm.exe on the phone in the windows directory. Bad News!

Please explain what this means to me? Thanks!

Posted by: HoOn

Ok, today is finally the Day!

I'll try to swing by T-mobile during lunch. Are the Corporate stores pretty open to reserving the MDAs because I'm going to call when they open to have them reserve one for me just in case I can't leave work during lunch.

What I am 99.9% sure about is, is that the MDA will not be able to run any Java applications. No games, no Google Local no Java Applets.
For some reason, it appears that T-Mobile has decided to remove this ability from the MDA. The Qtec 9100 does have this capability, as does the SDA abd the Cingular 8125.
Amazing that they would remove this capability!

Posted by: ustna

WOW! That would be huge bummer if that is the case. I am really looking forward to Google Local on the MDA. Can somone here confirm or deny this. Doesn't TMOJAY have the MDA already?

Posted by: HoOn

It doesn't make sense for them to disable Java. I read it soemwhere that someone was able to run google local on their SDA so I don't see any reason for them to disable that feature. There are probably hacks to enable it if they do.

SDA yes, MDA no.
Hack? Sure. But why would T-Mobile disable or remove this major feature?

Couldn't you just extract the Midlet manager from say the QTEK rom and run it on the MDA? ( legal issues with this not withstanding )

Or just get the jmm.exe from the SDA and all the dlls needed and load it on the MDA. Maybe. I think someone might try that today.

Posted by: gremlin000

I find it hard to believe that the SDA would have Java and the MDA wouldn't. What would the rationale be?

Ask T-Mobile. The PDA CSR I spoke to said "We are still learning about this new device". He had nothing else to say.

Posted by: HoOn

^^ I still can't understand their rational decision in crippling the Java functionality. I don't see a problem for most of us getting it to work but still...

I would love to talk to someone at product planning and find out what they were thinking when they decided to remove this!?
MDA on My t-mobile! No extension price - $479

Update! I was just quoted $249 for MDA with 2 year extension. Saves dept at T-Mobile.

Another update. CSR just indicated JAVA apps are not mentioned as supported in the MDA. No specific information saying apps are supported or not.

Posted by: tgenius

I just got my MDA, where is the setting to see if the wap.voicestream.com 8080 works or not? I can't seem to find it.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but for those interested in reading the manual ahead of time, here it is.
