WOW! You know I saw the folder there earlier today, and assumed there had to be something else wrong. I never opened the sound folder lol. Im going to copy the sounds from another skin and see what happens. Im sure you are probably doing this as I type this. hope we both get the same result( it working)

Unfortunatly after looking at a couple of other skins with sound folders, none of the sound files are named the same thing. I think this may be creator prefference. I might have to email the creator if I can find it again, and see about getting the right sounds for the skin, if there are any. Ill get back to you on this in the morning.

did that already nothing happens

Also the aWizard u gave me, can you zip that one up too? Thanks

I don't believe it does, I am running pretty good, but my ram has suffered a bit.

No...doubt that I'm younger.....just not too bright about getting enough sleep.

Let's see... I grew up watching shows like Fireball XL5, Diver Dan, the original Superman, Dennis the Menace, Captain Kangaroo, Wonderama (with Sonny Fox)...that should sorta bring my century into focus...

ok...i did the cold-boot and re-installed the apps that I'm gonna keep. here's what I kept..

spb pocket plus
spb diary
spb weather
spb backup
wisbar

everything works fine and i put a dope looking skin and theme on my today screen. before the cold boot, I had large icons in spb PP for Memory, backlight and stuff like that, now I"m stuck with these miniature icons. how can i change it to the large? click and hold doesn't offer the large icon option. that's the only thing that bothers me about what I have.

now i'm gonna wait on a good AIM app. so I can use that.

Posted by: i3onk

If they are the system Icons, like memory and battery and such just wait they will change, lol. I had the same problem. I was using the memroy icon and it would be small for a few days, then all of the sudden change to large. I dont know why, it just did.

Does anyone know of a way to disable the "Connecting to GPRS..." popup message?

There is a reg tweak in Tweaks2k2 that will get rid of that for you.

Maybe I am not alone!! Good shows

O.K. lets compare wrinkles for a moment.. My kindergarden school took a trip once to see the Verazzano bridge being built. My first computer was an Apple IIe. . I can remember when the Beatles landed at JFK on Black and White TV, or may be just my parents couldn't afford color, who knows.. They were on the Lawrence Welk show . I went to a concert in Staten Island to see an unknown group called "Deep Purple". I remember what it felt like to actually hear Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd for those who are scratching their heads} for the 1st time ever ). Here's a riddle for you old man.. When I missed a Movie at the theater, that meant never ever getting the chance to see it again? Answer in next post

Jonazen.... VHS was invented soon after, thank you..

We were on vacation in Wellfleet, MA (near Cape Cod) when "I Want To Hold Your Hand" hit the charts in the US. I missed the debut on Ed Sullivan...but my parents probably didn't want me staying up for it...

How about the World's Fair in Flushing Meadow, NY? We only went once...

Not sure about your movie question...except that I don't remember popular movies coming to TV anytime near to theater showing, and there was no option to "buy a tape". Wasn't until many years later (out of college) that I actually got to compare VHS and Betamax side-by-side -- and of course, I chose the "better" technology - Betamax...(and we all know the end of that story!).

Hey - I was in high school when the FIRST MacDonald's restaurant opened in NYC - it was a few miles north of me, in Riverdale (northwest Bronx). Manhatten fought the idea of fast food for a couple of years, and finally lost. I vividly remember the first MacDonald's opening in Manhattan (my great aunt, who was a bit batty by then) called and tried to make a reservation for dinner...).

Yup - my parents used to watch Lawrence Welk. I still have our original copy of Harry Belafonte's first album (mono, of course). Ummm...let's see... I remember being horrified when a quart of milk went up to 25 cents at the "milk machine" in a nearby apartment building.

My first Apple was a II Plus, and about 1 or 2 years later, I got an Amiga 1000, because I never believed that the silly IBM "personal computer" would be as sophisticated.

Color TV? My parents never had one until I was 18... Also, we thought the white walls on our car tires were really neat, and shoulder harnesses in cars didn't exist yet -- you were lucky if your car had lap belts...

Hey - I've got a good one: I first learned to program on an HP 9100A, and it featured a total of 3 registers (actually a 3 level stack) and it's display was a row of fluorescent orange "nixie tubes". It wasn't until the summer I graduated high school that one of my friends was lucky enough to get his hands on the new HP35, and I wound up with a relatively inexpensive "Bowmar" calculator (4 function plus exponential notation).

I saw Star Wars when it was first released at a drive-in theater when I was 6, I've been addicted ever since (new movies not withstanding).

ooohh..bad experience. after my hard reset and re-installs, i started downloading skins and themes for the wisbar. i installed one, but didn't like that fact that when I would open up for the keyboard the task bar would change colors and lose its icons...then we closed up..it would stay that way. I also noticed that it really really slowed down my device. the only things i have on my today is spb PP and spb diary integrated with weather. so that's not much. with tweaks2k2, i set it to keep gprs always connected..but it can't seem to find the signal. so the stupid searching pop-up keeps coming up all the time. guess i'm gonna have to do another hard reset and re-install without the wisbar...

any help with vjtraylaunch app. still couldn't find it at all last night. Mahalo.

Aloha! You should not really have to COLD Boot, if u have been reading my posts . I feel so comfortable trying out new apps and having very little down time, if un expected problems arise, or crash. Cause you should have a safe backup. That's before installing anything that acts like a shell, or skins, or themes, or too many apps. I have three major Spb backups, I call one, full.exe. This is my safe zone restore backup that works, cause I tested it after backup, with basic installs, nicely configured, setup with PW (if u want), sound adjustments, rings, basic registry hacks with tweak2k2, possibly encryption router keys, things that are tedious to me to keep doing over again. This is an almost out of the box backup with a custom feel.

My second I call Full2.exe, after spb PP, Diary, other plugins, plus some other apps, tested to my satisfaction. You may or may not need a third backup after Wisbar. I say this cause wisbar is a neat skin changer. You can try out different skins, themes, have some fun, maybe some other riskier hacks, and if I get it to work well and got my skins looking good, your happy, but if any problems arise, I can always go back and restore Full2.exe with Spb PP Diary only. If all else fails I can go back to my safe zone Full.exe and start from there again.

The whole idea of this for me, is to cut my down time to maybe 15 minutes bro.

Believe me, I have spent time and energy mastering this technique, cause I am a crazy man . This saves me so much time. Again I keep all my .cab files on my SD card, incase this happens to me somewhere away from home computer The biggest mistake I have stupidly made several times, was to cold boot and forget to hack registry enabling WM5 "NOT" to delete my cab files. This happened once away from home, and blew my head, cause I lost the cab file and never got to install it. Cause crap happens. For example, on an install something prompt me to change something, then re install... well WM5 had already deleted my darn cab file, I never got to re install and was away from file .

So my Full.exe restore backup has the hack(s) already in place. I am worry free from WM5 deleting any cab files. I can then proceed to install without worry.

Well we learn the hard way If u don't have a safe restore, and have to cold boot from start, your time is valuable. So if u have to start over again, the 1st utility u should install (copy to different location cause WM5 will delete it), is Tweak2k2.cab. Why? Cause u can always remove it afterwards, but hack the registry enabling some things like Do not delete cab files, possibly also the 802.11g, little safe hacks, it sets u up for the rest of installation quickly without worry, then STOP! Take a breath, backup before SPB or BBB Or WfB or what ever u call it. SAFE!

I did say I have 3 major apps, cause when it's all said and done, I may stop changing skins and themes, and hacks, and simply make a 3rd completd.exe self extract file. I did say Im crazy right I even carry on my case another 512 MB card and keep backups of my backups and cab files. Why? Cause if u have used these devices as long as I have, weird crap happens! For no reason at all u can loose ur SD information. It has happend to me before, completely wiped out!

Can't stop lauphing bro.. really bring tears to my eyes... lol.... I remember when they used to deliver milk to ur door step. Why did they have to stop that??

O.k. I meant by movies, that VHS was not around. Sad feeling to think u missed a movie for ever..

I may be wrong bro, you could be older than me!! But not sure...

I missed WoodStock, but ended up in pocono mountains festival, lucky to find my way home. I used to dry cars at carwashes, before they new what the heck it was. I feel I invented Jiffy Lube, just too dumb to have started one.

I told my kids invented the Coke Float, but they won't believ me..

We use to have a great computer network called "Sneaker Net", one big floppy to share.

CD's, DVD's, MP3's does anyone remember 8 track?

VHS? Beta? I still got my first projector. I remember bying my 1st Betamax, but also remember returning it for the lousy stereo quality of VHS as a tradeoff for movies selections.

I was running a BBS as a Sysop when the only way to get online was to use Fidonet? Are we loosing everyone yet..

O.K. enouph were old! But Wise!!!!!!!

Is there a link to ur start menu? I got a new skin cause I really like the icons. I threw some into a paint menu and changed some color to fit my theme. Im not home right now, so ill post it later and see what u think. Good sound on this one. The only isszue i have is some of the icons are not as functional as i would like.

I was having problems with BT today, a little concerneed, cause got everything looking so good, but if BT cant work efficiantly may haave to revert back to good backup and test. The other concern is RAM. Ever since i got started with wisbar and themes plus skins my ram has gone down drAstically. I usually have to resett to recover about 18MB whixh is w less than i had. But as i start usinf device something starts eating away at my RAM

I have been having RAM issues too. I would hate to think I have to get rid of this kick *** skin. I really love it. I spent the money on the new skin today, so I think I will live with the RAM drain for now LOL. Will have to find some other way to save ram.

I have a few question they may have been answered in the last 100+ pages but I dont have time to look through them all.

1. Anyplace where I can get free games, ringtones, themes, wallpapers for the MDA.

2. What are the features available through tweaking and are there "STEP BY STEP" and i mean step-by-step instructions on how to do so?

3. I need a screen protector and mini sd card for my device and a leather cover.... any suggestions?

Thanks very much in advance.

As far as free games, I doubt you will find anythign free worth playing, with exception to DOOM and pocket quake. Most things for the device need registering.
No need for free ringtones. You can create your own out of mp3's that you probably have on your PC. Try an app called mp3 cutter to size down those mp3's.

Tweaking is kind of a trial and error kind of thing.

Good deal on that Mini 2G not bad, next thing on my list. Feedback: 99.9% Positive very good merchant. And buyer feedbacks which spells reliable, and makes that 99.9 percent even more valuable.

I put up a page a while back with many free games, some hacked, a russian ftp I think. But beware, some don't work with WM5, trial and error, have good backups before u try. Games like skySkyforce. Don't ask me any questions about this link, just stumbled upon it once. Each folder has a picture of game, and some even give you hacked version, so u can see what ur getting. I have tried some on my older pocket pc, they work nice, but on my WM5 I only got to try one or two, and they did not work, but I am sure some do.

http://ppcsoft.org/downloadss/games/ I saw GilbertPDA, hey I paid 24 bucks for that game, and downloaded all the voice and extra stuff, awesom adventure game, check it out on Internet official site, so I am not sure what ur getting on this FTP, but game does not require key, you get official download only. Check it out...REMEMBER THE MDA USE THE ARM CPU!! So u should be looking for ARM games.

here is a picture right from there.. http://ppcsoft.org/downloadss/games.../MoratlTSCR.jpg

Good luck

Yeah I do man. I like the new skins, look great. Im playing with my newones now. The ones I just bought lol. Mixing them and some of my other skins to create the perfect skin lol. This is going to take a couple of days.

Nite man, talk to you tomorrow.

.

yeah you can get into this, even build your own. It's not that complicated. I opened up some guys text file, who was very open about how he created his skin. He said, he used parts of other peoples skin, and even gave a file that you can actually change the names of the .png, or bmp files to your own. So I suspect if you buy the software, or maybe the one you gave me, which I have not looked at, you can create your own.

I have done lots of web designing in my life, so not a big deal, though I am not the greatest artist when it comes to graphics. That is where the time is. I remember a saying once, a "good artists is a good pirate" . I have been a good modifyer of graphics, by the time I am done, they become something different. So pirating is a relevant thing to me. Now it's getting tougher with Flash. These days there is always someone selling a cheap flash tool or a template. I use so many in expensive tools, lkie Flash4D, http://www.introwizard.com/downloads/flash4d.php about 40bucks, other little tools that create any kind of flash buttons, what ever. If I need a complete flash site, I simply use monstertemplate.com. These guys are awesome artists, complete sites go for 30-60 bucks, if u don't want the original taken off site (then it's costs moolah 1200). Although the chances of someone having ur site after customizing and modifying, is like winning loto. I pay 40 bucks bro that's it. http://www.monstertemplate.com/ . I have Macromedia and Flash that I have been playing around with for many yrs. So I know enouph to change things. I'd rather just look around for some skin that some guy has 10 hrs into, and modify it a little, like this one I now use, cause the guy already did a great job. Also the sound effects he used are so very cool on this one. The device seems like it's a little alive with cute sounds even when background screen goes out.

But again bro my only pet peeve, if any, on what were doing to these devices, is the sacrafice of RAM. That's why I will gladly upgrade the MDA to 128MB, but so far not available with tech shops, or maybe upgrade to a similar device with lots of RAM, and give this one to my wife, who is a smaller person then me and uses my old iPaq 6315 now.

Great mag article on upgrading.... http://www.pocketpcmag.com/_archive...ram.asp?404=was

Yeah the black and white skin I just bought has some nice sounds too.

Nice article. I am going to keep the pocket pc techs website bookmarked. I think that will be a worth while upgrade.

I think Im going to try a new method here. Im going to do a hard reset. First thing after the hard reset is going to be making a fresh back up of the device after a hard reset(although I think doing a hard reset actually goes faster than restoring from a backup) so I may not do that lol. Im going to install everything I can (if not everything) on my 2G minisd and then use tweaks2k2 to ajust my memory allocation. Take away some of the internal storage and give it to the main memory. wont stop the memory leakage, but it should give me more time before it gets really low and needs a soft reset.

Posted by: i3onk

Ok memory allocation wasnt in tweaks2k2, anyone remember where it is? lol I forgot.

Nevermind I found it. It was in Memmaid

And the slider bar to change mem allocation doesnt move. So much for that idea. BAH!!

i3onk - MemMaid *shows* a page that's supposed to let you reallocate memory between program storage and main memory. There's a slider, and it's a nice idea...but it doesn't work in WM5. The allocation is controlled by Windows, and I don't believe there's a way to modify it (at least it hasn't been found yet!).

I was actually hoping that either MS or some creative soul would figure out how we could take full advanage of the huge capacity of something like a 2GB miniSD, and use that for some of our expansion purposes, freeing up "main memory" as much as possible. I guess that might be a bit dicey, as you probably wouldn't want critical parts of your OS living on a memory card that could be popped out at the touch of a button.

Yeah unfortunatly I figured that out AFTER the hard reset lol. I decided to go ahead and install EVERYTHING with exception to sbp plus, pocket breeze and agile on my storage card. At least this way, if someone does figure it out, i will have plenty of space to allocate to main memory.

Thanks for your replies I have one last question. What is tweaks2k2 that everyone talks about? Can I use that to tweak my mda?

Posted by: i3onk

Yes it is for performing registry tweaks on pocket PC devices.

http://www.tweaks2k2.com/portal/sta...050224182009983

You can get it there at the bottom of the page.

WOW! I just had a really wierd incedent. After getting everything reinstalled after the hard reset, I went to hit the link in my tray launch to get me to this page. Well it didnt work. I checked my favorites and all my favorites were gone. I was like WTF? Well I did a full backup, then did a system file restore from an old backup. Had to copy my favorites from there and then do a full restore of the backup I just made. What a pain in the butt just to get my favorites. I dont know where they went of what happened to them. It was truley very wierd.

You guys might want to make a copy of your device favorites somwhere on your pc. Save you the hassle of going through what I just had to go through.

I can't say enouph about having good backups!! Ones that work. Backup ur registry too, backup your settings in Spb Plus, and Wisban, if necessary too. Have them on your SD card, and your desktop computer. That is why I love using Pocket LAN, I can from easy chair just log onto my network drive, and copy my backups when I feel like it. Glad you r back bro...

To all you newbees in MDA land, here is something I did just for you, with proper credit for my friends here. Just in a days 20 minute fun!

I will say this. I have found out that if you replace Skin bar icons or change their colors, those which give you radio phone signals, or battery charge, will not work, unless u know what ur doing. I had to bring back the radio signal icon, cause nothing worse than an icon that serves no purpose. I now only change colors on those icons that are fixed in nature.

Like that beer commercial, Brrrilliant!!

True, Memmaid is a wonderfull utility, but ur right the slide bar for memory management does not work on WM5. Reason (I know u know), is becaue it is more for like my old pocket pc's which used memory for Ram and storage combined. ur right! WM5 manages memory differently. I have said before, that when u install apps on a WM5 device, look at ur RAM it does not touch it. It goes into Flash ROM, which is your program files, any files u install, wether in My Documents, I don't care were u put files on device, they all go to ROM. That feature in Memmaid is waisted in WM5. In my opinion the best little utility I have come across to bring back some RAM is SK RAM, a gift from SK Utilities and loads seperetely.

I contacted PocketPCTechs in California in reference to why on their site it says, upgrade NOT available for these popular devices like the MDA/ HTC Wizard, AKA yada, yada. I was lucky enouph to get a tech on the phone, his response was not what I wanted to hear.. Although no fault of his.

He said, "The CPU on these popular devices will not recognize anything over 64MB or RAM" Wow!! That surprised me! I was hoping to hear, Oh it's coming, or some rediculous pampering answer. He also said, "if we could, we would have it online, also said, "its the luck of the draw with these devices on whether or not u can upgrade one, based on the CPU capability or recognizing more RAM". Oh well troops.. That's it for us.

I like it. My MDA actually slowed down when I had the WisBar Advance skins and themes so I stopped using it. I had the same stuff on my Today screen as you except for the Traylaunch..i'll hook that up tonight. What AIM client are you using? Aim.exe from your ftp? I tried it out, but it wouldn't stay connected in the background. hmmm...back to the drawing board..

Whee doggie! (another reference to a distant past that most on this board never knew existed!). Thanks Maddog for the mention, but you and i3onk have really kept at it while I faded out a bit - work, clients, negotiations, interviews, etc. - would rather be working on theme sets for the MDA! (so...do you remember "wheee doggie!"?, granny's cold cure? jethro learning his gazinters? ellie mae?).

Other trivia references from back then:
- Zante Misfits
- To Serve Man
- Next stop, Willoughby
- Talky Tina
- "Jeepers, Mr. White!"
- Jay North
- Hugh Beaumont (he played "Ward")

I use Agile messenger for my IM needs. If you are looking for an FTP, i would go with resco explorer. It comes with an FTP and registry addon. They both work very nicley.

Your insites on Wisbar and skins were important. Cause u sounded like u were happy with experience, but were honest also, and new something about it.

I don't know what to say, it works great for me, ask I3onk we have been on line with AIM and I have had no issues what so ever.

You know, not sure why these things work so well for some and other are left out in the cold. But I can tell you this.... Weird phenomena, you be the judge.

Every since I loaded Spb Diary certain things never worked better. As you may have heard here, links in emails don't work with Opera Browser, now it does with no issues. Also ur right about the version of AIm 2.0 I have on FTP. I had issues having AIM remember who the heck I was. But now since Spb Diary, and after I placed with "Tray Launcer", I3onk gave you, it works like a charm! Is it Spb Diary for AIM or Tray Launcer, or what, not sure but can't complain. I click on AIM 2.0 and it automatically loggs me in right away, as long as wi-fi is on of course, I get right online with no issues.

Not sure what to say.. This is a FREEbee cheap version. But does the job for me. I only wish we could meet in in Hawaii, fun, and share notes, and I could show u my experience with my MDA.

Look I want to help you, cause I want to see you have fun with your MDA, keep working at it, and asking if something your doing is right, if I know I will tell u that's a good idea. Try going back to basics. I learned one fact for sure, as Jonazen has got to be my witness, when all else fails, go back to basics!

Try cold booting, and load just Aim 2.20 get online with wireless, and try it again. Load in device program files, little file, and try it without nothing else running or installed. That is only way u will know if it works, or if something else is going on. But make sure without a doubt that ur wireless is working without a glitch first and your ready to get online, try PIE to make sure wireless is working, see if lan recognizes your router ID and gets a signal, and ur getting an IP address assigned. If this is really important tool to you, and it's FREEbee try it, then report.... I get on daily to HOFO, so will get your posts. Post them here, cause others are also reading these posts, even those who do not join HOFO. Try it to night, it's Friday night, everyone around me is partyeeing and I am alone at home, sadly wife is out, kids are gone, so I will be around here all night long.... Cold boot tonight, if your around that is, otherwise, be patient! Post ur issues. And if u getting going, send me private msg and give me put me on your buddy list, so we can test it out.

Hey I talk to I3onk often now on AIM. Im making friends here from NYC, Ca, Hawaii, who knows.. It's a way to get away from the rest of my crazy life

Everything Maddog said in this post is correct. We are here to help man. Who knows maybe they will make us admins of this thread or something soon LOL.

Maddog, I love the Borg Cube PC mod. That is so sweet.

This is the screenshot app I use. Its free and gives you 5 seconds to get ready for it.

Yes this one is a bit more sophistacated than mine. Cause u don't have to use up a designated button to take picture. But I already bought mine, and can live with it, cause I assigned it to the #4 hold button which use to be record, then BT SoundON that I don't use anymore for MSVC with my BT H500 motorola.

Hey on another note. Do you get this? I think this is a feature of Wisbar. I noticed a very cool thing, when I open up an application, like word, or excell, or commander, what ever, an icon of the current application is placed above left corner, next to start menu. At first was not sure why, then clicked on the current app icon next to start menu, and it swapped over to the second running app, giving me a neat way to multitask. I used to have to go to Today screen, or the start menu to multitask, but this way it's quicker, faster, and Wisbar does not seem to care what application ur running, unlike start menu, which will not show u active app, unless it's in the start up, and even then it's not perfect. Very cool indeedo..

Don' u just love it man. Where were u when I needed u. I was looking for the cheapest way out, but was a little concerned on just getting any sc, so I was looking around, and the one I got has great user reviews and mag write ups, yet urs is cheaper then 4.99, its FREE!! Thats what Im talking about. You could kill yourself looking for something on fabulous google, and really never find it. Just like tray launcer, the one I kept running into worked like crap, until I3onk sent me his. That is why its so important to communicate and help out.

Well 4.99 is not exactly something to cry about, but would have gotten a cheese burger.

Thanks

Both of these screen captures are good cause they don't require a button assignment, like my 4.99 cent. I reallyw ant to go back to hold button as record. soo good.

Hey whats up with that music download link u put there bro. I got confused and clicked on that and got bomed with popus.?? Weird

Put up a screen capture bro, I would be able to see what ur doing. I don't have any issues with Wisbar right now that Im aware of. Believe it or not, even with all I have been doing on this device with wisbar, Spb plus, Diary, yada, yada, my system is running better then ever, again knock on wood. Sso good in fact, I hve been trying to make it crash, thus tonight did a big backup of everything up to know, just in case I do something else to screw it up. But really not sure what ur doing that causes you the problems. Not everyone has FTP site to upload files, or to use 4 yourself. Even my own FTP is out of space, right now..Again FREEBEE http://www.savefile.com

I shared with I3onk this free FPT site. You guys can use that site to upload somethings for the rest of us. I noticed I3onk puts his screen shots, on this site http://s69.photobucket.com . Joine it, it's freebee, thats my freebie spelling , and easy to upload a screen capture from ur MDA for anyone to see.

I don't care if I help one person, its like the turtle story.. Did I tell this already.. A guy is on a beach with thousands of little turtles desperately trying to make it to the great ocean, most dying in the process. so he picks up one turtle and throws it in to the saltwater. An observer sees this, and says, what difference could that make? The guy responds, well it made a huge difference to that one turtle!

Posted by: MadDogX007

I3onk as far as making it as moderator or something on HOFO, may be a long shot bro, cause this guy HO does not even respond to email when problems occur, like my issue when I was locked out. HO never responded, no one in HOFO ever responded. I wonder if this site is not on it's own somehow. I know it's not, but whos paying attention to what??

lol who knows man.

Well I think installing wisbar on my minisd may have been a mistake. I seen to be having problems with it. MDA is locking up when starting it and such. Guess Ill uninstall it and put it in ram instead.

When Spb plus loads and u try to put it on Mini SD, it clearly warns u that the driver for the MiniSD card may load after Spb Plus and this will cause an issue. Any of these shell softwares should clearly be on the ROM on WM5, since they can't go in to RAM. But ROM on devices does not require a driver like ur MiniSD does to load.

I don't know why ur getting an error msg, I will assume your wireless is in order, and you can get online with something besides agile?

I posted a freebee AIM 2.0 on http://www.jcvlending.com/maddogx007/index.html . Try it, if for any other reason, just to see if u can get online.

It works for me beautifully on my MDA. Another guy on this forum says he can't get it to work, yet, but again i have no issues at all. See if it works for you, let me know..

Im actually backing up all my cabs now for minisd storage. Im sick of going through this clusterscrew of folders I have all my apps in.

Welcome to my world! I got all my cab files on my miniSD. Like I said, what if ur somewhere else and u need to re install something, what do u do.

Also hopefully u have the hack for WM5 NOT to delete ur cab files, right?

Posted by: i3onk

No, I dont mind it deleting the cabs from the temp directory when Im done installing. I just collected all of my cabs now from my actuvesync and program files, folders of my PC. Was a bit tedious, but wont have to worry about doing it again. I like using activesync though for my contacts, appointments, and my favorites. And my Avantgo updates for me every morning, so i can get my news on the way to work

Posted by: MadDogX007

I3onk. Thanks installing cab right now. I haven't use active sync for long time bro. I prefer my network folder on ppc to install cab right away. Then copy cab file to sd card for future reference.

In Tweak2k2 there is a feature for ppc to show a Network Folder. I use PocketLAN once to make contact with shared resource, after that just turn wi-fi on, go to file commander, click on nework folder, and bingo. It is so much faster for me, especially cause usually Im near router and signal is great.

O.K thats interesting, loaded agile and noticed gray bar back on today screen, wondered why? Then noticed Agile messenger stopped statement, so got to dissable agile from being on my desktop. interesting..

First time I play around with agile, cute, u can access ICq, AOL, XMPP?, MSN, Yahoo, and Google! Wow your a busy guy bro.

Thats cute, you can take a picture of yourself and send it out? Funny.

Agile messenger stopped just means you havn't signed on yet. When you sign on you will get a number of contacts and a number of new messages in the today screen spot. The only thing I have noticed is sometimes after a reset its not on the today screen, but its box is still checked in the today settings. I just start the today settings then close it, and it returns.

Yeah Im not on right now, getting ready for bed.

xmpp is jabber i think I dont log onto that. I dont have any buddies on my googletalk so I dont use that right nwo either. googletalk doesnt always log in for me anyways so no biggie. icq, aim, msn and yahoo work great though.

Well Im off to bed now. Talk to you guys later. G-night.

I guess that's true, I just don't use things that way much, but it makes sense if u use it that way. but what do u do, if your away from home or activesync, and something goes wrong, and need those cab files? Still keep them in your SD? or not?

I already removed it from today screen, just included as shortcut in spb plus. I guess u like it on today screen cause u get notifications of whos online, or something?

What do u have accounts with MSN too, and Yahoo? I like the cute sounds from AIM door chime, etc., don't hear any sounds with agile, but defenately seems more sophisticated.

That's why I am going to keep them on my minisd now with 2G worth of minisd space, I can afford to have them all on my card along with my ringtones, message tones, shortcuts, icons, pictures, and favorites.

If I have a yahoo account for email, can I use that?

Posted by: MadDogX007

I just reset and clicked on agile and boom went right to login, was connecting and remembered I did not have wifi on, so clicked on wifi, then came right bck to agile and bingo online. It keeps telling me new version avialable, can u down load on ppc and upgrade online, or will saying ok screw me up?

Posted by: MadDogX007

too late i clicked ok. and it's downloading?

Well it wants to remove old version, but can't so i wants to know if it's o.k to continue intallation, lets see....decions, decisions.. instaling amuupdate.cab, but as expected could not. Weird with WM5 nothing loads without removing, and frankly I can't remove anything. So I guess I am stuck with old version, and that's o.k. Now for me to install new version, cause I can't remove nothing from this, my only weird issue with 2.17. I would now have to go back to my last big backup, before agile, and load the new one again. But Im happy with the versin u sent me, the heck with it.

does it delete cabs just from the temp folder or any folder that the cab is installed from?

WM5 will delete the cab from any place u install. I only install from SD card, and if I do not have the hack, it's gonner baby!

don't find ur self in a remote location thinking otherwise, cause if you go to install and something goes wrong with installation, as you know things do, and have to re try, gone already!

It's no news to me, cause I hve had NO luck what so ever un installing anything with 2.17. Bottom line! Unless it's my MDa system conflict? But why would it be when all is running excellent! It's just weird. Unless u have tried this already and it does not happen to u with 2.17, or Jonazen with 2.17, or anyone else with 2.17, but no one here is communicating about their experience removing softwarte with 2.17. We all seem to be cold booting or for the most part restoring backups.

So Im on my own. But as long as I have successfull backups in three different levels, sort of speak, I don't feel threatened by this issue.

I don't like being hostage to any particular process, like what if hotsync does not work. I easily get around it, and im also looking at the dongle sync idea, since I have one, but have not figured out what to do with it, yet. Again, I don't get news the way u do from activesync before work. Active sync serves a purpose, but hate relying on anything, or anyone for that matter.

Although I give credit where credit is due, and u have been very good at responding, plus you are a guy who seems to come through, I don't know u personally, but already admire that about u, cause I am same with people in everyday life. I am always there, as u can see I believe in people, but most are out for themselves, unless they need something from you, and that is true in life, coming from a guy that has lived, as long as my guy Jonazen!

It's a funny thing to me about people, I am self employed, have owned businesess for over 20 yrs, and still find time. Figure?

Hey! Not that old yet!

I like your approach to backups, and taking them at various stages of installation so you can "fall back" to step prior to the most recent install so you don't have to keep starting from scratch (that gets old FAST).

I've found uninstalls generally bad WM5. I can't recall ANY of them working 100%. I've had to go in after the fact and manually remove directories, registry entries, links in the startup folder, etc to complete an uninstall. While I find it tedious and annoying, it's not so bad by comparison to Windows XP -- even when an uninstall "works", there's often ALL sorts of garbage left behind - muck in several places in your registry, DLL's strewn throughout your Windows and System32 subdirs, etc. MS have NEVER gotten the uninstall concept right on any platform.

2.17 is at least as bad as the prior version in this regard - maybe worse.

Also - I'm finding that the phone does NOT boot up consistently. Really seems to be a timing issue. This may be a result of installing some things to the memory card and others to internal program storage -- I've read that the storage card may sometimes be slow to initialize. What's irritating is that results are NOT consistent. Sometimes -- most of the time actually -- everything boots up just right. But sometimes, PocketBreeze may fail to start up at all. Last night, I got a boot up message telling me that PZPTools.exe (pocketzenphone) failed to run -- but then after the dust settled, it was running just fine (???). A couple of times, Wisbar loaded up, but apparently couldn't find all the skin files fast enough, so a couple of spots on the screen had the default images instead of the custom skins I had installed -- but the next time I booted, it loaded everything just fine.

I also had my own business -- for the past 13 years. Just now in the process of considering joining up with a larger firm. The big concern now is actually that I'll probably have LESS time to myself -- or at least less ability to determine WHEN I take the time for myself. That has always been the luxury of running your own business (for me at least). Always put in lots of hours, but when and where I chose. That's my biggest hesitation when considering outside employment. But the spots I'm looking at really look good, and could be reason to make the jump. If it doesn't work out, I can always come back to my own business again. We'll see what happens...

Biggest reason I can't play this weekend is all the company here. My brother and his family are here now (staying several days). We have 16 people here tomorrow for Easter, and getting the house ready now. Tonight, I'm ducking out for a few hours with some friends to watch the UFC fight (#59 "Reality Check"). Tonight should be good -- but the next one, 60, should be fantastic with Royce Gracie and Matt Hughes. btw: speaking of "old" -- I'm still practicing martial arts a few times a week, currently with a fantastic jeet kune do instructor; karate, kung fu and several years of aikido prior to this. My wife isn't thrilled and wonders why I like pounding on sweaty people and getting thrown around, but I love it -- we mix in lots of different styles and techniques from classic arts - karate and kung fu, grappling and jujitsu, sticks (filipino kali and escrima), indonesian styles like ****ao and Silat, weapons and more. Keeps you young! Whenever Dan Inosanto swings out East with a seminar in the Princeton or Connecticut area, I make a point of attending -- at 70, he's still one of the best, and a 2-day seminar with him, 6 hours on Saturday and 6 hours on Sunday, is a fantastic experience (Dan was Bruce Lee's partner for years, and primary training partner, introducing filipino martial arts into Bruce's Jeet Kune Do).

So - I won't have much time to play here for a while. When I do, I think I'll be making some changes:

- planning on adding Wisbar Advanced Desktop and creating multiple virtual desktops -- I like that idea

- will be working on my own, lighter weight skins. I like Juni's work a lot, but I think I can come up with lighter weight stuff that ought to load faster (I think)

- may drop iLauncher once I have WAD installed - should be redundant I suspect.

- Might do a hard reset first just to make sure things are completely cleaned out first.

- will also look into trying your strategy of taking incremental backups between installs, to make recovery easy if anything fails.

For now, though, gotta put all this fun stuff on hold.

For those who celebrated - Happy Passover. For those celebrating tomorrow, Happy Easter. For those who are about to rock - we salute you!

I was actually playing with the wisbar desktop last night. I think I may have to switch to it as well. It is a really nice app that does everything i need it to do. Best part is my pocketbreeze/contact breeze wont go to waste. I havnt figured out a way to remove the today screen apps from a page yet so until I do, I am going to need to come up with a plan on how I want my pages layed out. I have had some issues with it though. I think those may have been my fault. After creating a page with some today screen apps, I also added them back to my today screen. For some reason when I used the messages app on my today screen to check a text message it shut down my WAD. Its going to take some playing around with. Glad I made a fresh backup yesterday before playing with it.
One nice thing about it, you can lock it into landscape mode. Dont know if I want to use it that way, but it was kind of neat to see it.

Maddog! Where do I go about getting this reg hack to keep my cabs from deleting after install. Right now I copy them from my installs folder into my temp folder then install them from there letting them delete. Pain in the *** to go through all that though.

Happy Easter to all of you aout there and Happy Passover to my fellow Jews.

I need to know a few things. Does anyone elses MDA make a static noise during a call?... and anyone know where I can get a call blocker for free?

also how do I update my internet explorer on MDA to 5.0 +?

Posted by: i3onk

tmobile doesnt offer call blocking for a specific number yet. I dont knwo if there is an app that does it for you. I doubt it. An app wouldnt neccesarily block a call, just maybe read the caller id and stop your phone from ringing, if anything.

Posted by: i3onk

OK i just came across this looking for the call blocking.

I am sorry to say that tmobile call blocking only allows you to shut off call, and only allow emergency calls. That is the extent of their call blocking.

Now!! While looking for an app that may do this, I came across this. I assume this would be good for MDA and pocket PC users as well. So for all of you that dont have Tmobile total internet "MCD", this is for you.

Yeah, too bad the closest hot spot to me is 50 miles away Their hotspots are way too far apart and too few for much of NorCal (at least for everything north of Santa Rosa and Sacramento). It's weird too for us here in Mendocino County, there's a brand new Starbucks here in the Ukiah area (8 miles south of me) and it has no HotSpot, yet Fort Bragg, a town of 5500 over on the coast just west of me has one at their Starbucks, go figure.

ok, i have a question. I have RegWiz so that i can recieve bluetooth files. The only thing is that i still cannot recieve bluetooth files. And if i am recieving them, then i cannot find them. Where do files recieved over bluetooth go?? Is there anything else that i have to do to unlock bluetooth recieve besides have RegWiz??

You dont need regwiz to recieve BT files. The files usually get saved to my documents I believe. Im not sure on that.

Not sure about regwiz, but would like to know more about it. Most of the time WM5 defaults to placing files in the My Documents folder, try there?

Do you use regwiz with a dongle?

Not at the big, brand new (well, it opened up last fall, kinda new I guess) one in Ukiah, at least according to their web site, I haven't been in it yet to check. Yep, Fort Bragg is 50 miles from me (physically it's closer, but the way the roads and the Skunk train (Willits to Fort Bragg) runs, it's 50. This is very rugged and rural country) the next nearest one is in Healdsburg, 55 miles south of here. In the Northern Sacramento Valley, there are a few in Redding, Chico, and Yuba City, but again, only 3 or 4 at most in each town, and those towns are spread way apart, and that leaves most of the rest of the valley without any.

Wow ur an impressive dude. I used to take Judo long time ago for several years. I went into the Marines and some guy trying messing with me, and I can remember flipping this guy and landing on his stomach, guess he decided to stay away from me.

Yeah it's interesting to make changes to this device, cause apps are really not too expensive, when it comes down to the cost of table top pc software. I paid for the Wisbar today a whole 9 bucks or something. So far I am really happy with Wisbar, Spb Pocket Plus, Diary, plus TrayLauncher. But as some guy asked me once "Do you leave your options open", I would consider the possibilties of trying something new, but for the moment I got everything running smooth as a babys butt. I mean everything works smoothly and trouble free. I love my skin it as a metallic feel and I like metalic things, and the sound is no neat. I am a happy camber right now with my MDA. It is not a perfect world, I have had a bit of a challenge with BT for some reason, but for the most part, my frustration has been out of stupidity, and not looking at the comm mgr, only to see that BT was off several times on me in the last couple days. I have had no real issues with radio communication, and frustrations are just related to technology not being a perfect science kind of feel, but for the most part, again, I am really very happy with the outcome of what I have been doing to modify the MDA.

I just don't see it getting any better for me. Even changing skins makes no sense, cause I really like this look and feel right now. Only thing I may do just to change is possibly a different theme in time. Last night and today I was running Agile, and AOL 2.0 simultaneously and all was well. I got a call during a reset and thought oh boy, things looked like freezing time, but MDA handled it well, got calle and reset.

At some point you got to start enjoying this device, cause its suppose to make our lives better. I appreciate your sincere response to my backup philosophy. Actually like u I was in the computer business for 17 years, owner of a company called PCTech Consultants in San Francisco's Silicon Valley, and hosted many a client sites with another sibling business I owned called TechWeb200. So I know my business. But the computer industry is a very challenging field, which is why I always loved it, but I am no longer in computers, my last business was a small computer store which I liquidated several years ago. Ironic, but I had clients in Cal., in the mortgage business, and learned everything inside out, and now I am in the Mortgage Business, weird ha... I had a friend that worked for Sun Microsystems for years, and eventually ended up going back to school and became a Doctor of natural drugs?

The thing about computers to me at least, and some of the friends I still have who are computer consultants, the industry can drain you mentaly dry. Of course Im not going to get into my entire resume, cause It's very long with technical, simililar to yours I'll bet, like during the dot com industry my self and 2 partner from NYC, Miami, and me in San Fran, ran an online store called consumerstores.com, which also went belly up in 1999 during the stock market crash, and in same year in April, just before the 15th, similar to this time, my life changed, and three months later I ended up in Tampa Florida.

So my philosphy in life has always been, never say never. But always remember that what comes around goes around, in life as well as in business. But I am a happy guy!!

Its good to have family around in the Holidays, enjoy it!! And happy easter to all

Figure?

I want to thank you for thoese comments. I like to think I do what I can for people whenever possible, and try even when its not. I see you ar the same way. With the two of us on these boards, and Jonazen when hes not to bogged down with work, we should be able to handle anyones issues that may arrise. I think we are close to becoming MDA gods. HAHA! Ok not gods, I havnt gotten into writing my own ROMS yet, but you never know, maybe we can figure it out between the three of us and collaborate on the best TMO MDA ROM ever released lol

I dont know why I have such a different Tweaks2k2 than you but I am glad I got the new one. There were a couple different options in there that I didnt have on my old one. Im going to test the cab thing right now with TenGo keyboard app.

Oh I almost forgot. MadDog, You have to take a SERIOUS look at the wisbar desktop. You think you like your SBP Diary now, how would you like a FULL SCREEN page dedicated just to Diary. I am going to do some serious tweaking with this when my daughter takes off with her friends in about an hour.

That is the weirdest thing man. I am not sure I got the Beta, but who knows, I mean I donwloaded it and paid for it, and entered the key, that's it.

I say don't mess with a crazy man. I may consider opening this baby up, after doing some serious research, and seeing about upgrading the CPU and RAM myself. Cause I am very dissapointed that we can't do this. And I don't like people telling me I can't do things. Now Im not crazy, and may have to accept that fact. This would be a serious hack, but if it succeeds, I may start a little bus out of garage upgrading Qtek9100's K-Jam's MDA's., etc. Just got to get some equipment, and some advise from some people I know. Maybe we can, maybe we can't nothing ventured nothing gained.

Not sure what ur trying to do? You want to receive files with the MDA? What files? And what are u trying hardware wise to receive with?

Are you trying to receive files from another PPC? Are you tryig to receive files from you desktop PC? Sorry bro, just can't seem to get a hold of your situation.

.

I wont lie especially to you bro, I checked it out, and it did seem like an interesting application, but had just bought Plus and Diary, and felt, man I don't mind buying them, but don't like opening up window and throwing money into the street, unless someone can use it, and find it a blessing.

Post pictures, cause I am intersted in your results, but not sure I wnt to jump on the wagon so quick. Unless you impress the living crap out of me with it.

OK man here you go.

1- make sure you are set to discoverabel in your bluetooth settings.

2- the sender wants to go to the file they want(im assuming they are using a standard cell ie...razr) copy it, then they will some options and they will choose bluetooth

3- they will see your phone popup on their screen as a bluetooth recipient and they will choose you

4-they will send and you accept the recieve.

------------------------------------------

Ok for those of you who havnt sent something FROM the MDA to a bluetooth device, you may have some problems doing it with the regular file explorer. There is NO option for it. You will WANT to get resco file explorer. (trust me it kicks ***) you go to the file, tap and hold tap send to then tap bluetooth recipient and then away you go. I regularly send ringtones, images, and video via bluetooth and it works great.

Going to take me a couple days to get it right, but then I will post screenies of my desktops. Im looking for the right background now. Which reminds me.

Anyone know how to extract the image from a theme(.tsk) file? I really want to use my present today screen image as my desktop background.

You can still use your apps that you have purchased. There is an option to add today screen apps to your virtual desktop. Just amkes it so you can have diary on one page by itself, increasing your view of all the info on it. It seams to be such a cusomizable app I cant wait to get into it. Ill do a fast few pages tonight and post some pics. I installed diary just to check it out. Granted SBP pocket plus may be kind of useless with it, but everything else should work great. Man I mean you can move around the date, and time, and OMG everything. When i realised its potential last night, I almost weet myself.(haha! YES! Im a very very sick man LMAO)

A while back I posted a msg along these lines, how can u send information from one PPC to another PPC BT device faster then Beaming. it is faster with BT? What kind of file sizes are we talking about and how long of a transferr. Cause i while back I needed a file from my wifes iPaq about 42MB's in size, and Beaming, well forget it, I grew a beard and still gave up. Now the neat thing is I can send her file to my LAN and use PocketLAN to just retrieve it, but on the road, if we need to pass to each other an MP3, about 7MB in size, can this be done with Resco, and how much faster is it from Beaming?

Also Im trying to see if the commander we got with 2.17 can handle it too, but not sure?

Posted by: MadDogX007

Man I just looked up Resco file manager. Nice piece of software, but where was it a few weeks ago, before I bought my reg editor, and other stuff that comes bundled with Resco??

Lol I think I mentioned resco a couple of times. they have a nice keyboard app too. And the resco radio is pretty nice as well(if you dont have a prob wasting battery juice)

Im not sure how fast IR beaming is as apposed to BT transfer. I know that sending an approx. 7M mp3 via BT to a razr took me about 15 minutes give or take a few minutes. I did learn one thing though early on. For those of you who use activesync, turn off the file conversion settings. If you have file conversion settings on the mp3's and videos and such that you send to people, wont work. It gives a bad file type error. So turn off that file conversion.

Posted by: i3onk

Im not sure how much space we have for ext rom apps. I am thinking of adding some of my app that I use to the ext rom. Might speed up the boot proccess and maybe kill some of the mem leakage. guess I will have to try it out. Man I hope I dont end up killing my MDA lol

Posted by: eep02b

i can send files over bluetooth, i just can't recieve them. it shows that its connected to my phone, and slowly recieves the file, but when its finished, i can't find it anywhere.....

Posted by: i3onk

check your my documents folder.

Posted by: ilvla2

What's the difference between the main and extended rom?

Posted by: i3onk

There are three ROMs on your device. There is the OS ROM(Operating System), Radio ROM(Deals with the Phone portion of your device) and the Extended ROM(these are the apps and customizations of your device) OZ Pocket messenger, MMS messaging, pocket msn, 2.17 has a registry editor, some registry tweaks. Things of this nature.) I will have to do some serious debating on which cabs I want installed into the EXT ROM.

I hope this cleared it up for you. At least a little bit.

Not going to have time to work on the WAD tonight. Didn't realize how late it was. Ill do it tommorrow. Night all!

Posted by: ilvla2

Actually, it cleared it up a lot, thanks i3!!

It isn't actually internet explorer. Its PIE (pocket internet explorer) not sure what version it is. tweaks2k2 has a reg hack that will make it act like IE6, but from what I have heard, its more of a hassle than anything else. PIE works pretty good. if you want a better mobile web browser, get Opera for mobile phones. works GREAT.

Posted by: tonkabui

for everyone using opera, does it take a while to boot up? once loaded, the program works fine, but that initial launch for me takes almost a minute. am i doing something wrong?

No, its the same for everyone. Opera take a little bit to load up. That's just the way it is.

Posted by: tonkabui

ah, good to know. thanks i3onk. oh, i got wififofum to finally load on my mda. it's definitely a neat program, especially with the radar map of where waps are. but the bad thing is the program is such a battery hog! i had it on for less than 2 minutes and i was down to 95% battery life, straight off the charger.

my understanding is that the only difference between T-mobile's USA $6/month GPRS email service and the $30/month unlimited web access is that there are some ports blocked from the $6 subscription, and that this can be gotten around by using a proxy. can anyone shed any light on this?

arghhhhhhhhh
had to do my first Hard Reset and lost everything - Be carefull what programs you install on the mda - but one good thing is I have plenty of free ram now
but no apps yet

Posted by: i3onk

Get SBP backup man. You wont have to worry about losing anything. JUast restore and you are good to go.

Posted by: robpet2

I know this sounds like a stupid question but can you buy stuff off websites using your mda using a credit card?

Posted by: tknospdr

As long as the lock icon is locked you should be fine. I paid my phone bill the other day using PIE, it was quite fun.

And a question of my own. Does anyone know of a way I can update my ROM with my Mac? I've installed VPC 7.1 with XP SP2 and all security updates and ActiveSync 4.1 but it won't see the phone. When I go into device manager it says that the driver is installed correctly but fails to start up.

Yes you can. You can do anythign on your MDA that you can do with your PC web browser. With exception to getting popups. For that I would use Opera. Everytime I use Opera, I find some new reason to love it. Its a great piece of software.

Sorry man, I know nothing of MAC's I have been and always will be a PC user.

LMAO OFF AT THIS FLOMAX COMMERCIAL - thanks for the reply just wanted to make sure b4 I send my cc info over the web.

So far I think I will purchas sbp pocket plus, not sure about spb backup ( 19.95 for just that one application ) I think I might be safe aslong as anything I download I copy to sdcard, and computer and put all my contacts on my sim..... what thing or reasons would you use sbp backup? ( still looking for more programs - already put macromedia flash 7 back on. ) or is tweaks2k2 better- don't want to download something or buy it if it isn't worth it

Trust me, you want to get SBP Backup. It is by far one of the best purchases I have made for my MDA yet. You think you have the apps you want, and you think you have it setup the way you want. Im here to tell y ou YOU DONT!! LOL You are now addicted, and will be for some time to come. The more neet things you see the more you will want to try out. Backup will save your butt man. Takes about 10 minutes to backup and same for restore.(give or take) I do a backup after every successful install of an app, Just in case> If you have an issue while installing the next app, just hard reset then hit the executable for the last backup you did. You will be right back wehere you were before everything went to crap. Ther is actually no reason to hard reset before restoring either. Thats just if you get into serious trouble. See the ting about SBP backup is, you dont have to reinstall all of your apps and contacts. (not to mention if you use active sync you dont have to worry about your contacts, they will be sync'd in from outlook.)Your apps and contacts are already in the backup. Is always nice to have the cab files backedup on sd or you PC just in case though.

I didnt botehr paying for tweaks2k2. I do a hard reset right now a few times a week. After all those hard resets I have learned what tweaks I want out of it. I get them all on the first run and dont have to worry about the two more trial openings. not to mention, once you get them down and backedup from a good install, you wont need to use it again anyways.

WOW! Look at me, Im starting to type novels like MadDog HAHA!

Ok well Mine are more short stories compared to his :P

Posted by: robpet2

thanks bro - too bad they don't have a package deal on sbp website... with sbp you can change the dialer right? I forgot! that's one reason why I might get the backup too.... since the hard reset it like having a baby pitbull don't know what to feed the mda first

Posted by: i3onk

Are you talking about the dial pad?

Posted by: tknospdr

So far I've installed:

A few skins
A few backgrounds
Wisbar Advance 2 *
Wisbar Advance desktop
PSShutXP * <-- actually, this is free
Resco Explorer <-- deleted, it locked up the MDA everytime I tried to run it.
Weatherpanel *
Pocketweather
Pocketbreeze *
Resco Radio <-- can't get it to load any stations, they all give me a decoder error.
Salling Clicker **
SciFi skin **
Agile messenger 3 <-- Also removed as it kept locking up my phone.

Still need to find a good registry editor (preferably free), and I guess I'll have to pony up for a backup program. I'm also going to pick up a copy of MS Voice Command, I can get it through work for $28.

I've also got the Alpha of Missing Sync but I can't get it to do squat.

* - going to pay for it
** - already paid for it

Thanks,
David

Also, can you change the wait-state cursor?

I like your skin MUCH better now, better defined icons and just better looking all around. You elected not to have a theme?? or are you still looking around again? You know how it is. I would have given you my honest opinion about the first skin u had, but I had messed with that one, and icons were weak at best. It's obvious u put more time in thought with skin.

Okay let me anaylize this... You pulled out the Tray Launcher. Well the today screen defenetly got cleaner, but how are you getting to the other stuff, using pages for diary, etc, accessed from today desktop? Where? I will assume you elected to have the date and time bottom today screen along with RAM, and storage? Your email icon on top wisbar advance, is it cause you have it open? I like tghe idea of more contacts on deskop at once. On 2nd page, it seems, but now sure, are u still utilizing Tray Launcher?

I put my link here to go back and forth to see the differences with Wisbar desktop. But so far like the clean look on Wisbar desktop, I may look into it now. Cause I like my theme but icons and stuff take away from viewing theme on 1st page desktop.

Not really. Opera takes a little to get going, but once it's up, it flys next to PIE.

That is the purpose of a Proxy server, it has greater control. I will assume the 6 dollar monthly is limited, as apposed to giving u access to a full service via proxy. Proxy simply controls. Ports are controlled by a proxy server, security is greater.

You should go back on this thread and seriously look at our posts in refence to Spb backup and it's potential. To not have it is a mistake! The MDA does not come with a backup utility, but to explain all we have been doing on this site, without you at least going back a couple weeks to see is a shame, cause it's in detail!

Listen to my bro I3onk, i told him PIE sucks!! Period!! There are better and faster browswers out there, but non as good as Opera, and I have tried most of them already. I even own NetBrowser 3.2 or latest version and it does not work now on WM5, yet, but still takes back seat to Opera.

You cannot upgrade PIE like a desktop PC. You do get a better version of PIE on the new 2.17 ROM upgrade, I know this at frist hand, cause I could not go to my favorite site with PIE, to movies.com. It would tell me to upgrade, but one of the browsers movies.com recommended was Opera.. With the 2.17 ROm upgrade, I tried going back to movies.com using PIE, and it did not ask me to upgrade, so not sure what version is on this custom ROM, otherwise, PIE is good for sites with flash, cause unfortunatley right now, the beta version of Opera does not have flash. A trade off at moment, one worth waiting for.

Look at me... my responses may get shorter than I3onk, he may now be the crazy man! What is happening! I know, we talked things to death, now were starting with questions over again.

I can't say this enouph I am sure the troops on this thread will agree. 4 you new guys, Pls go back and check out our notes, cause there is a lot of reading, and lots of great stuff we talked about for weeks. I3onk and I have literally hacked this MDA to death, and modified it so that TMO will probably never talk to us again. But we can upon the snap of a finger make it look like it's back out of the box. Really great stuff, on backups, ROM upgrades, skins, apps, crashes, cold boots, experiences and explanations beyond the call of duty. Look at Jonazen's while your there, valuble philosphy on PPCing.

[I3onk, hey bro, on that second page you have a baseball game on your far left, and I noticed DOOMCE. You need to have GFDOOM bro, much better in design, with stylis and other controls , Did you download DoomCE from my ftp? Try GFDoom bro! Try Quake2 while ur at it. Nothing like it on a PPC platform.

What is that game icon far right corner, next to DoomCE, I think I know, but??

thanks for the input on sbp backup. I did read all the other 143 pages in this thread, but it takes a while to read them on the mda ( can't get online at the time on my laptop ).... I took the advise a got the spb Backup and the pocket plus and sbp diary... cost me 50 bucks soit better be worth it.... but its all good.... I got my mda almost back to where it was b4 the hard reset... I think it was the wififodum or whatever its called that kept messin my mda up.... the hard reset did fix the msword error that someone else was getting........
bout to install my dialer skin again and do another backup...

but one question - when you need to restore from a hard reset using the backup, you have to use the pc or restore from sdcard???

Posted by: robpet2

okay just finished getting mda back to life, added phoneskin, added opera..... opera is okay on some sites but if you try to use it one howard forums it takes a year to load halfway and just stop... PIE seems to work a little better to me so far.... plugin for sbp pocket plus makes the mda work like a good mp3 player.... and I still have good ram left....

any good recommendations on programs or apps that are not in the last 144 pages?

I know this was discussed but how can we change the calculator skin.. I got the sbp extended theme but the calculator still looks the same...

A surprise to me that Opera is giving u a problem , but who knows, one fact is certain, put an app on 10 computers, and one or two of them will without a doubht give u an issue. Here is my FTP site, I have shared with others, with apps that u may like to use, appls I know I love to use. Spb Pocket Plus is more than just another shell. If you think ur MP3 works nice, try other apps, it is an awesome product. I, as well as others here, have cold booted many times before getting our devices working the way we want to see them. The greatest fact about these times is "Try before you Buy". Then u need register and backup, cause if you don't, like the song, waisted nights and waisted day awaits you. I hope this link helps you in any way. http://www.jcvlending.com/maddogx007/index.html

Still have alot of work to do before I create the real one.

Alright Bro. I downloaded the Wisbar desktop, and played around with it for a while, but did not have much time. I went back to an old trusted restore, before Spb Plus, yada, yada, and started with Wisbar again. But to be honest, I saw virtual pages, buttons, and never got a chance to really mess with it, cause ran out of time, besides, it is not as friendly as I thought. Got to go tomorrow with family to beach early, and had to restore my latest trustee with Spb plus, diary, and everything up to now. Got it up in less then 10 minutes. Maybe I will give Wisbar another chance this coming up week. In the meantime try to answer all my questions about your jpgs, cause I know you, and you will be plucking away at this thing, and that my good old friend will save me time figuring it out. Like i said, it seems interesting, and you know me, I will try anything once, like u, but the virtual pages cought me by surprise, in that I was trying to create a few with one icon app on each, then trying to see the fastest way to jump from page to page

Posted by: i3onk

OK I only have a couple minutes before I pass out. Im tired as hell, has been a VERY long day.

MadDog. The pic I posted of all my pages. Thats wisbar desktop. each page it a virtual desktop. I have no today screen WAD lets you add today apps to it so you dont have to worry about wasting the money you spent on the apps. They are still very usefull. They are now just placed on different pages so as not to clutter the screen so much. All of the icons I actually have on my second page are the same icons. They are just bigger now so more easily recognized and better defined. So far everything i have added to my WAD I have been able to move around and place them anywhere on the screen that I want to. The only acception to this is the today apps. You can seperate them apart from each other more with pixel adjustments, but thats it. The time and ram and storage meters actually came with WAD along with a couple of others that i removed. It workes kind of like pocket plus in that way.
As far as the theme, I dont have one yet. I just created the black background from a jpg so everything showed up better to show you guys the possibilities of this thing. This was just a fast 4 page slap together mainly for you MadDog so you can chek out what it can do. It seawms to lock up on me sometimes but then unlock itself after a minute or so. I think that may just have something to do with the level of memory available at the time. MDA doesnt seam to eat any more ram with this than it did with everything on my today screen and tray. Battery level held strong for most of the day with the slight drain when I did a restore at work. Its a 7 day trial so definatly worth checking it out.

robpet, when doing a restore weather after a hard reset or not, just click on the .exe wherever you stored the backup and away it goes.

OK I am beat and cant keep my eyes focused enough to read any more or write anymore. Good night all, ill be on tomorrow of course to answer anything else I can.

I have a question, on most GSM phones, there is an option in the menu for hiding your caller id when calling. Like on the Moto Razr, you go into (if i'm not mistaken) in-call setup, and caller ID, and just click Hide ID. Is there an option to do this on the MDA?? If so i can't find it. Can anybody help?? And i have the original T-Mobile Rom on my phone.

Open up your phone dialer and go to menu and options. Go to services. Its in there.

MadDog, that Icon on the bottom right next to doom, is gfdoom lol, and yes I got them from your site. Just havnt had time to play them yet. Had issues with quake2 so I need to set it up again.

Ok well, I think I may just go back to wisbar without the desktop. after working with it for a few days and watching it performance, I am a little disappointed. I have found myself doing more softresets than ever, on a regular basis. While it is a wonderful app, it is just too buggy and a big resource hog. If there was more memory to play with I may concider keeping it, but after a reset, I find myself starting with 17M of RAM. This is in no way enough RAM to have to start with. I love the app, but it just isn't feasable to use it right now. Maybe after a 128M upgrade I will try it again. For now though, it will sit in a folder on my PC awaiting it's return.

Posted by: henrykahn

Alright now that I know how to do the basics I need to know the latest rom and the best rom for my mda. I also need to know where to get the Original Shipped ROM from tmobile for warranty purposes. They say if you tamper with the software the warranty is void. So...

I have heard about the Qteks being the best but i dont know.

I wanted to try WAD to go along with WA2, but haven't even had time to think much about doing this over the last few days. A bit disappointing to hear about your experience with WAD, although I was wondering if it would be a resource problem. The virtual desktops have to "live" somewhere, and the plugins have to be loaded and running whether or not a virtual page is showing at any given time (it would kill performance to have to load a virtual page and its plugins on the fly when you show the page). So -- this HAS to be heavier than the Today screen by itself, and HAS to be heavier than Today screen plus Wisbar (without WAD).

I'm also concerned because you saw this resource consumption without even going in for a fancy or complex 3D desktop of any sort - your background was simple enough so that it should have been very compressable. More complex images would eat even more resources. I love the idea of virtual desktops -- just don't know if the resource trade-off will be worth it...

most of us in this thread use 2.17 ROM. we are still debating weather it is the best or not. we are all having different issues with it. As far as your OEM TMO ROM, if you get a program called awizard(dont get the beta) it will CID unlock your phone and make backups of all of your TMO ROMS. You will need to unnlock before flashing new ROM anyways, so this is the best way to go. I am at work right now so I don't have the 2.17 link handy, but I am sure someone else can post it.

you can't back up actual apps, but you can do a custom backup which will give you (i believe) 4 options for backing up.

dammit i guess i will just wait till i have to do a hard reset cause i forgot to do a back up after i installed something that was worth keepin. so the spb backup doenst keep apps? so that means that i will have to re-install everything...

2.17 meaning the tmobile right? And how do I run that tweakp2 (or w.e its called) on my phone?

Posted by: henrykahn

actually Iam not going to do anything right now but once I get my phone exchanged ( making a buzzing noise during call ) I will then upgrade, reflash, etc. and make it custom. I just want to gather the information and be ready

i3onk seems to be a master at this so can you give me a yahoo addy or something and i can seek your mentorship.

I'm sorry man, I think I cofused you. it just doesn't backup apps specifically. When you do a backup though it will backup everything. even installed apps.

thanks bro about the tip on the back up...
what do people on this thread think about opera 8.5beta on MDA.. cause it has its good and bad things..
GOOD THINGS
1. multiple pages on screen ( tab browsing) similar to netscape
2. displays faster(loads faster) than PIE
3. looks more like you are really using your PC than a mobile browser

SOME BAD THINGS
1. when switching from portrait to landscape you web page looks crazy and the layout goes crazy
2. howard forums looks better on PIE. on opera it looks generic
3. sometimes a page loading seems unresponsive but it is actually still trying to load it...

On a another note... does anyone have any links to some good streaming media

and can you use RSS feeds directly to MDA

Posted by: mcd

Thanks for the link. I think maybe it was the wrong one. It points me to a Cingular forum. This is a T-mobile issue.

Sorry for ur experiences, but your and mine on Opera are two different sides of the world. I get nothing of what u said, My landescape works beautifully, especially with HOFO. Franckly I don't like PIE very much. The only pet peeve, if any on Opera, to me, is that it does not support flash on PPC, yet, on beta version. But I got no issues with it at all, and based on the reviews I have read http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/in...=3&p=478&more=1, it is arguably one the best browswers in the market today for a PPC, and growing on the PC platform too. So my feeling is, as always, you can please some of the people some of time, but no all the people all of the time mentality.

There are several other products browsers, thank goodnes for consumer markets , that you can try. NetFront 3.2 is considered also arguably one of the best. I bought NetFront 3.2 for WM2003, but soon found out it did not support WM5, yet, so stopped using it for now. But it supports Flash on WM03, lots of features. Keep it in mind, cause it will support WM5 very soon.

And there is Thunderhawk, it is also considered a top notch browser. I like this one alot too. I tried this browser, the landscape mode is beautiful, cause the comany who designed it, is also a font corporation, but what detered me from keeping it was the charge is high, and if u really like it, they use proxy and charge a small monthly fee.

Thunderhawk Review: http://www.mobiletechreview.com/sof...thunderhawk.htm

What do u think I3onk. I got u going on Opera, what is your personal experience on the MDA with Opera?

Remember on Quake 2, the issue may come if you name the file anything else but "quake", cause it looks for the game file in quake/ID1. And it has to be on the root, like the SD card, not like game/quake/ID1. It should work, that has been my only issue.
Great game, a little slower than gfDoom, but awesome feeling and sounds.

The question I had on WAD is how do you get to the virtual pages from the desktop?

You see bro, i downloaded WAD installed it, and ran it, and felt, may be this is not for me, without wasting too much time with it. It is not as reliable as Spb Pocket Plus, and as easy to use. It gives the effect it is a nice feeling, but it may totally defeat the purpose of having ur stuff to look at on the Today screen daily. If I have to go to a virtual page to see Spb Diary, for example, i might as well go to the contacts virtual page, instead of using Diary on virtual page? Anyway, you crack me up , cause your a trooper man!! You will give any darn thing a try and give it the best shot. But like u already in the 15 minuts I spent on it, felt, I was glad to restore my entire enchalada back to Spb Plus and Diary, plus my the great Tray Launcher, you turned me on too Bro

Say whaaaaat!! Hey Spb Backup will be the best investment you will ever make bro. It backs up everything on MDA, makes a mirrow image of your PPC, every darn thing on the device, with the exception of your SD card. So if you utilize the 40 or so MB's on Flash, it will backup every app you installed. I for example, have loaded all my neat apps I like in Flash with keys, etc., so that if I need to restore, I get everything back like a mirror, don't skip a beat. You may want to also hack the registry using tweak2k2 or if your brave, use a regeditor, before loading the rest of your apps in flash, then do ur first backup. Cause sooner or later, it's not a matter of if, but a matter of when, like now, and u will be happy to have that self extract file which will put you back on top of your game plan, without too much trouble.

The key fact about backing up is to do several on different stages, so that you can always go back to a stage that u know looked and worked well. Like when I tried WAD the other night, I went back to my 1st stage with just hacks and flash apps, then loaded WAD. Once I figured WAD may not be for me, I then went to my 3rd and final stage backup and restored the way it was, like a mirror restore. I did not skip a beat and was up and running as if nothing happened in less then 10 minutes

No sure if u got answer to this, but NO. The beautify of this backup is that it creates a self extracting .exe file with your mirror image, or what ever stage backup u have. So you don't need nothing to restore, but the file on your SD card.

I think Opera is great. I havent started using it on a regular basis yet because I havnt transfered all of my bookmarks. I like the way HOFO looks on it and have no probs with landscape. I just need to work on getting my email links working when it is set to default and I will be great.

Great game, a little slower than gfDoom, but awesome feeling and sounds.

The question I had on WAD is how do you get to the virtual pages from the desktop?

That may have been my problem, I think I names it quake2/id1 Ill try it again named as quake

Actually changing pages was very easy. I set my voice record button to next page, and it worked great. Not only did it turn to the next page, but it also turned wisbar on for me if it was off. Was nice just clcking a button once to get where i wanted instead of using the d-pad a few mnore times. Also nice having ALL of my shortcuts on the screen instead of just the 11 I can fit in the traylaunch. But alas, it was just too much of a resource hog. Thats OK! That will just give me time to work on figuring out how to create a wisbar skin. As far as I can see that was the last thing I had to test for now was the desktop. Granted, everytime someone says something about a new app I will probably test it. If I didnt have SBP backup I would probably be alot more hesitant about doing so.

I think this may have to become part of my approach. As you'll remember, I've been "thinking" of making a bunch of changes to my installation over the last several days, but haven't had the time. Well NOW, for some reason, I think my installation may have made the decision for me. Even when I do a reset, my MDA is acting differently than it did a week ago. Some apps aren't consistently starting up correctly, and now when I use Voice Command to change profiles via pocketzenphone (PZP), the PZP icon display doesn't change properly and I can't really tell easily whether the profile has changed or not. A couple of other odd behaviors as well.

So...I'm thinking that something I've done may have scragged the current install. It would be GREAT if I could simply fall back to one of several prior backed up configs - perahps one without PZP installed, or without ContactBreeze or PocketBreeze. But no...I don't have any backups like that to roll back to.

So many it's time for me to follow your lead...if I have to do a hard reset and reinstall apps, I should do take incremental backups along the way this time.

Do you store all your various backup versions on a single miniSD, or on your PC? (sorry if I missed the details in your earlier posts). I've got a 1gb miniSD in my MDA now (2gb ordered a couple of days ago). Wondering if perhaps I should use the 1gb to hold several backups, and then swap in the 2gb for "everyday use" (music, data files, email attachments, browser cache, etc).

Suggestions?

Each backup will probably cost you about 14-15M of space. I have my 2G card and just keep them in a folder called backups. I dont have all my backuips on my minisd though. I just keep the last two that I have made. I have the other two, One from when I have OEM TMO ROM (Just in case i ever have to go back to it for whatever reason), and one from 2.17 install on my 128M backups minisd, which also has my old backed up ROMs on it.I have the last two from when I went with the 2.17 ROM with the 1.12 radio ROM stored on my 2G card

. I know what apps i like to run now so I dont do a backup after an install of every app. I just install all the apps then get my ringtones set, message tones(ie..special ed saying I GOT MAIL!! when I get an email HEHE) and things like my voice dial recordings and such. Then I back up and go on from there.

Oops! Missed this

Yeah...I've been pulled in ten different directions lately. Will have to devote some time here soon though. As noted in my last post above, my install is acting up. I may have set this off when I mucked with application load order using MemMaid - don't think my installation has been quite happy ever since then, and a few odd behaviors are popping up, so it may be time for a "do over"...

So...it can do a restore right off an image on the miniSD and avoid the need for a hard reset and app reinstalls, right? That sure would be nice...

oh yeah I purchased spb backup, and diary( cool app ) and also got the plugin for windows media player( so my mda acts like a ipod on crack) now I just need a damn 2gig sd card ( bought the 256 - trying to be cheap at the moment) but that I see all the things this mda can do I'm ready to invest a little bit more....

People I run into say "you spent 250 (also getting another 50 bucks back frm rebate ) dollars on a phone" , and I'm like pump yo brakes - this a pocket pc not a caveman sidekick.... this mda can do more tricks than david coperfield....

good utility to get is memmaid for the newbies ( frees up the ram on mda - if you surf the web alot , you definitely need it )

what's up with the streaming media site people.!!!!!!!!!!!
hook me up

Yep the image is an exe file so you can restore at anytime. no issues at all.

On anotehr note, another one of my trial periods past. Resco file explorer. I just got done purchasing it from handango. Instead of just getting the explorer with the reg editor and the ftp addon. I got the multi pack for $10 dollars more. Also includes the resco keyboard pro which trial anded for me yesterday. Also has a nice picture viewer and editor. Came with resco sticky notes too, but I dont see myself having a use for that. The reg resco explorer with reg editor and ftp addon was$25, the keyboard is another $20 So i think I got the better end fo the stick lol. Now I just have to update my cab install forlder, install them and do yet another backup LMAO.

I havent gotten into streaming media yet. Damn you for mentioning it. See the way I am, now I will have to go test &^%$(^& diff streaming media apps then find the one I like and buy it. Thanx for making me spend more money. LOL Hey thats why i work right to spend.

Must be nice to have spent so little for your MDA. I know I spent $400 + tax. Mail in rebate got lost in the mail along with the sticker panel from the box, so Im out my $50. lol. I know MadDog spent even more than that for his. I couldnt have thought of a better way tospend my money. Ok maybe I could if I think about it. Maybe another MOBO and CPU for the PC. Dont need those though. Since I got this, I dont spend my free time gaming anymore, I spend it h4xing this damn thing LOL!!! WEEEEEEE!!!!

OK - thx. Sounds good. Too late tonight (alarm going off in less than 5 hours...WHY am I up now??? still wiped out from entertaining and feeding 16 loony relatives over the weekend and cleaning up after they left).

So tomorrow, I should get the backup util.

I've got Resco explorer/ftp/regeditor also - excellent - I agree.

Thanks again (and to you Maddog too). Will follow up tomorrow...

Ciao...

You can only use mp3's for ringtones. You will add them to windows\rings

Message tones are in .wav format and they are in the windows folder.

I make my own ringtones and message tones. The best way to find the files you want is to google them or to try and get them from a P2P app like limewire. I use an app called mp3 cutter to make my ringtones and message tones smaller.
