Maybe I am not alone!! Good shows
. I can remember when the Beatles landed at JFK on Black and White TV, or may be just my parents couldn't afford color, who knows.. They were on the Lawrence Welk show
. I went to a concert in Staten Island to see an unknown group called "Deep Purple". I remember what it felt like to actually hear Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd for those who are scratching their heads} for the 1st time ever
). Here's a riddle for you old man.. When I missed a Movie at the theater, that meant never ever getting the chance to see it again? Answer in next post

. I feel so comfortable trying out new apps and having very little down time, if un expected problems arise, or crash. Cause you should have a safe backup. That's before installing anything that acts like a shell, or skins, or themes, or too many apps. I have three major Spb backups, I call one, full.exe. This is my safe zone restore backup that works, cause I tested it after backup, with basic installs, nicely configured, setup with PW (if u want), sound adjustments, rings, basic registry hacks with tweak2k2, possibly encryption router keys, things that are tedious to me to keep doing over again. This is an almost out of the box backup with a custom feel.
. This saves me so much time. Again I keep all my .cab files on my SD card, incase this happens to me somewhere away from home computer
The biggest mistake I have stupidly made several times, was to cold boot and forget to hack registry enabling WM5 "NOT"
to delete my cab files. This happened once away from home, and blew my head, cause I lost the cab file and never got to install it. Cause crap happens. For example, on an install something prompt me to change something, then re install... well WM5 had already deleted my darn cab file, I never got to re install and was away from file
.
If u don't have a safe restore, and have to cold boot from start, your time is valuable. So if u have to start over again, the 1st utility u should install (copy to different location cause WM5 will delete it), is Tweak2k2.cab. Why? Cause u can always remove it afterwards, but hack the registry enabling some things like Do not delete cab files, possibly also the 802.11g, little safe hacks, it sets u up for the rest of installation quickly without worry, then STOP! Take a breath, backup before SPB or BBB Or WfB or what ever u call it. SAFE!
I even carry on my case another 512 MB card and keep backups of my backups and cab files. Why? Cause if u have used these devices as long as I have, weird crap happens!
For no reason at all u can loose ur SD information. It has happend to me before, completely wiped out!

How about the World's Fair in Flushing Meadow, NY? We only went once... Not sure about your movie question...except that I don't remember popular movies coming to TV anytime near to theater showing, and there was no option to "buy a tape". Wasn't until many years later (out of college) that I actually got to compare VHS and Betamax side-by-side -- and of course, I chose the "better" technology - Betamax...(and we all know the end of that story!). Hey - I was in high school when the FIRST MacDonald's restaurant opened in NYC - it was a few miles north of me, in Riverdale (northwest Bronx). Manhatten fought the idea of fast food for a couple of years, and finally lost. I vividly remember the first MacDonald's opening in Manhattan (my great aunt, who was a bit batty by then) called and tried to make a reservation for dinner...). Yup - my parents used to watch Lawrence Welk. I still have our original copy of Harry Belafonte's first album (mono, of course). Ummm...let's see... I remember being horrified when a quart of milk went up to 25 cents at the "milk machine" in a nearby apartment building. My first Apple was a II Plus, and about 1 or 2 years later, I got an Amiga 1000, because I never believed that the silly IBM "personal computer" would be as sophisticated. Color TV? My parents never had one until I was 18... Also, we thought the white walls on our car tires were really neat, and shoulder harnesses in cars didn't exist yet -- you were lucky if your car had lap belts... Hey - I've got a good one: I first learned to program on an HP 9100A, and it featured a total of 3 registers (actually a 3 level stack) and it's display was a row of fluorescent orange "nixie tubes". It wasn't until the summer I graduated high school that one of my friends was lucky enough to get his hands on the new HP35, and I wound up with a relatively inexpensive "Bowmar" calculator (4 function plus exponential notation). |
Can't stop lauphing bro.. really bring tears to my eyes...
lol.... I remember when they used to deliver milk to ur door step. Why did they have to stop that??

I was having problems with BT today, a little concerneed, cause got everything looking so good, but if BT cant work efficiantly may haave to revert back to good backup and test. The other concern is RAM. Ever since i got started with wisbar and themes plus skins my ram has gone down drAstically. I usually have to resett to recover about 18MB whixh is w less than i had. But as i start usinf device something starts eating away at my RAM |

No need for free ringtones. You can create your own out of mp3's that you probably have on your PC. Try an app called mp3 cutter to size down those mp3's. Tweaking is kind of a trial and error kind of thing. minisd card http://cgi.ebay.com/2GB-MINI-SD-MIN...QcmdZView Item MDA accessories http://www.thepocketsolution.com/st..._iv_accessories |

He said, he used parts of other peoples skin, and even gave a file that you can actually change the names of the .png, or bmp files to your own. So I suspect if you buy the software, or maybe the one you gave me, which I have not looked at, you can create your own. I have done lots of web designing in my life, so not a big deal, though I am not the greatest artist when it comes to graphics. That is where the time is. I remember a saying once, a "good artists is a good pirate" . I have been a good modifyer of graphics, by the time I am done, they become something different. So pirating is a relevant thing to me. Now it's getting tougher with Flash. These days there is always someone selling a cheap flash tool or a template. I use so many in expensive tools, lkie Flash4D, http://www.introwizard.com/downloads/flash4d.php about 40bucks, other little tools that create any kind of flash buttons, what ever. If I need a complete flash site, I simply use monstertemplate.com. These guys are awesome artists, complete sites go for 30-60 bucks, if u don't want the original taken off site (then it's costs moolah 1200). Although the chances of someone having ur site after customizing and modifying, is like winning loto. I pay 40 bucks bro that's it. http://www.monstertemplate.com/ . I have Macromedia and Flash that I have been playing around with for many yrs. So I know enouph to change things. I'd rather just look around for some skin that some guy has 10 hrs into, and modify it a little, like this one I now use, cause the guy already did a great job. Also the sound effects he used are so very cool on this one. The device seems like it's a little alive with cute sounds even when background screen goes out.But again bro my only pet peeve, if any, on what were doing to these devices, is the sacrafice of RAM. That's why I will gladly upgrade the MDA to 128MB, but so far not available with tech shops, or maybe upgrade to a similar device with lots of RAM, and give this one to my wife, who is a smaller person then me and uses my old iPaq 6315 now. Great mag article on upgrading.... http://www.pocketpcmag.com/_archive...ram.asp?404=was |

I was actually hoping that either MS or some creative soul would figure out how we could take full advanage of the huge capacity of something like a 2GB miniSD, and use that for some of our expansion purposes, freeing up "main memory" as much as possible. I guess that might be a bit dicey, as you probably wouldn't want critical parts of your OS living on a memory card that could be popped out at the touch of a button. |

You guys might want to make a copy of your device favorites somwhere on your pc. Save you the hassle of going through what I just had to go through. |

I will say this. I have found out that if you replace Skin bar icons or change their colors, those which give you radio phone signals, or battery charge, will not work, unless u know what ur doing. I had to bring back the radio signal icon, cause nothing worse than an icon that serves no purpose. I now only change colors on those icons that are fixed in nature. http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i...07/enhance2.jpg |

Nice article. I am going to keep the pocket pc techs website bookmarked. I think that will be a worth while upgrade. I think Im going to try a new method here. Im going to do a hard reset. First thing after the hard reset is going to be making a fresh back up of the device after a hard reset(although I think doing a hard reset actually goes faster than restoring from a backup) so I may not do that lol. Im going to install everything I can (if not everything) on my 2G minisd and then use tweaks2k2 to ajust my memory allocation. Take away some of the internal storage and give it to the main memory. wont stop the memory leakage, but it should give me more time before it gets really low and needs a soft reset. |

Hey on another note. Do you get this? I think this is a feature of Wisbar. I noticed a very cool thing, when I open up an application, like word, or excell, or commander, what ever, an icon of the current application is placed above left corner, next to start menu. At first was not sure why, then clicked on the current app icon next to start menu, and it swapped over to the second running app, giving me a neat way to multitask. I used to have to go to Today screen, or the start menu to multitask, but this way it's quicker, faster, and Wisbar does not seem to care what application ur running, unlike start menu, which will not show u active app, unless it's in the start up, and even then it's not perfect. Very cool indeedo.. ![]() |

But as long as I have successfull backups in three different levels, sort of speak, I don't feel threatened by this issue.I don't like being hostage to any particular process, like what if hotsync does not work. I easily get around it, and im also looking at the dongle sync idea, since I have one, but have not figured out what to do with it, yet. Again, I don't get news the way u do from activesync before work. Active sync serves a purpose, but hate relying on anything, or anyone for that matter. Although I give credit where credit is due, and u have been very good at responding, plus you are a guy who seems to come through, I don't know u personally, but already admire that about u, cause I am same with people in everyday life. I am always there, as u can see I believe in people, but most are out for themselves, unless they need something from you, and that is true in life, coming from a guy that has lived, as long as my guy Jonazen! It's a funny thing to me about people, I am self employed, have owned businesess for over 20 yrs, and still find time. Their hotspots are way too far apart and too few for much of NorCal (at least for everything north of Santa Rosa and Sacramento). It's weird too for us here in Mendocino County, there's a brand new Starbucks here in the Ukiah area (8 miles south of me) and it has no HotSpot, yet Fort Bragg, a town of 5500 over on the coast just west of me has one at their Starbucks, go figure.

I have had some issues with it though. I think those may have been my fault. After creating a page with some today screen apps, I also added them back to my today screen. For some reason when I used the messages app on my today screen to check a text message it shut down my WAD. Its going to take some playing around with. Glad I made a fresh backup yesterday before playing with it.
One nice thing about it, you can lock it into landscape mode. Dont know if I want to use it that way, but it was kind of neat to see it. Maddog! Where do I go about getting this reg hack to keep my cabs from deleting after install. Right now I copy them from my installs folder into my temp folder then install them from there letting them delete. Pain in the *** to go through all that though. Happy Easter to all of you aout there and Happy Passover to my fellow Jews. |

I like your approach to backups, and taking them at various stages of installation so you can "fall back" to step prior to the most recent install so you don't have to keep starting from scratch (that gets old FAST). I've found uninstalls generally bad WM5. I can't recall ANY of them working 100%. I've had to go in after the fact and manually remove directories, registry entries, links in the startup folder, etc to complete an uninstall. While I find it tedious and annoying, it's not so bad by comparison to Windows XP -- even when an uninstall "works", there's often ALL sorts of garbage left behind - muck in several places in your registry, DLL's strewn throughout your Windows and System32 subdirs, etc. MS have NEVER gotten the uninstall concept right on any platform. 2.17 is at least as bad as the prior version in this regard - maybe worse. Also - I'm finding that the phone does NOT boot up consistently. Really seems to be a timing issue. This may be a result of installing some things to the memory card and others to internal program storage -- I've read that the storage card may sometimes be slow to initialize. What's irritating is that results are NOT consistent. Sometimes -- most of the time actually -- everything boots up just right. But sometimes, PocketBreeze may fail to start up at all. Last night, I got a boot up message telling me that PZPTools.exe (pocketzenphone) failed to run -- but then after the dust settled, it was running just fine (???). A couple of times, Wisbar loaded up, but apparently couldn't find all the skin files fast enough, so a couple of spots on the screen had the default images instead of the custom skins I had installed -- but the next time I booted, it loaded everything just fine. I also had my own business -- for the past 13 years. Just now in the process of considering joining up with a larger firm. The big concern now is actually that I'll probably have LESS time to myself -- or at least less ability to determine WHEN I take the time for myself. That has always been the luxury of running your own business (for me at least). Always put in lots of hours, but when and where I chose. That's my biggest hesitation when considering outside employment. But the spots I'm looking at really look good, and could be reason to make the jump. If it doesn't work out, I can always come back to my own business again. We'll see what happens... Biggest reason I can't play this weekend is all the company here. My brother and his family are here now (staying several days). We have 16 people here tomorrow for Easter, and getting the house ready now. Tonight, I'm ducking out for a few hours with some friends to watch the UFC fight (#59 "Reality Check"). Tonight should be good -- but the next one, 60, should be fantastic with Royce Gracie and Matt Hughes. btw: speaking of "old" -- I'm still practicing martial arts a few times a week, currently with a fantastic jeet kune do instructor; karate, kung fu and several years of aikido prior to this. My wife isn't thrilled and wonders why I like pounding on sweaty people and getting thrown around, but I love it -- we mix in lots of different styles and techniques from classic arts - karate and kung fu, grappling and jujitsu, sticks (filipino kali and escrima), indonesian styles like ****ao and Silat, weapons and more. Keeps you young! Whenever Dan Inosanto swings out East with a seminar in the Princeton or Connecticut area, I make a point of attending -- at 70, he's still one of the best, and a 2-day seminar with him, 6 hours on Saturday and 6 hours on Sunday, is a fantastic experience (Dan was Bruce Lee's partner for years, and primary training partner, introducing filipino martial arts into Bruce's Jeet Kune Do). So - I won't have much time to play here for a while. When I do, I think I'll be making some changes: - planning on adding Wisbar Advanced Desktop and creating multiple virtual desktops -- I like that idea - will be working on my own, lighter weight skins. I like Juni's work a lot, but I think I can come up with lighter weight stuff that ought to load faster (I think) - may drop iLauncher once I have WAD installed - should be redundant I suspect. - Might do a hard reset first just to make sure things are completely cleaned out first. - will also look into trying your strategy of taking incremental backups between installs, to make recovery easy if anything fails. Of course Im not going to get into my entire resume, cause It's very long with technical, simililar to yours I'll bet, like during the dot com industry my self and 2 partner from NYC, Miami, and me in San Fran, ran an online store called consumerstores.com, which also went belly up in 1999 during the stock market crash, and in same year in April, just before the 15th, similar to this time, my life changed, and three months later I ended up in Tampa Florida.

Im here to tell y ou YOU DONT!! LOL You are now addicted, and will be for some time to come. The more neet things you see the more you will want to try out. Backup will save your butt man. Takes about 10 minutes to backup and same for restore.(give or take) I do a backup after every successful install of an app, Just in case> If you have an issue while installing the next app, just hard reset then hit the executable for the last backup you did. You will be right back wehere you were before everything went to crap. Ther is actually no reason to hard reset before restoring either. Thats just if you get into serious trouble. See the ting about SBP backup is, you dont have to reinstall all of your apps and contacts. (not to mention if you use active sync you dont have to worry about your contacts, they will be sync'd in from outlook.)Your apps and contacts are already in the backup. Is always nice to have the cab files backedup on sd or you PC just in case though.
I didnt botehr paying for tweaks2k2. I do a hard reset right now a few times a week. After all those hard resets I have learned what tweaks I want out of it. I get them all on the first run and dont have to worry about the two more trial openings. not to mention, once you get them down and backedup from a good install, you wont need to use it again anyways. WOW! Look at me, Im starting to type novels like MadDog HAHA! Ok well Mine are more short stories compared to his :P |

, but who knows, one fact is certain, put an app on 10 computers, and one or two of them will without a doubht give u an issue. Here is my FTP site, I have shared with others, with apps that u may like to use, appls I know I love to use. Spb Pocket Plus is more than just another shell. If you think ur MP3 works nice, try other apps, it is an awesome product. I, as well as others here, have cold booted many times before getting our devices working the way we want to see them. The greatest fact about these times is "Try before you Buy". Then u need register and backup, cause if you don't, like the song, waisted nights and waisted day awaits you.
I hope this link helps you in any way. http://www.jcvlending.com/maddogx007/index.html

and had to restore my latest trustee with Spb plus, diary, and everything up to now. Got it up in less then 10 minutes. Maybe I will give Wisbar another chance this coming up week. In the meantime try to answer all my questions about your jpgs, cause I know you, and you will be plucking away at this thing, and that my good old friend will save me time figuring it out. Like i said, it seems interesting, and you know me, I will try anything once, like u, but the virtual pages cought me by surprise, in that I was trying to create a few with one icon app on each, then trying to see the fastest way to jump from page to page
WAD lets you add today apps to it so you dont have to worry about wasting the money you spent on the apps. They are still very usefull. They are now just placed on different pages so as not to clutter the screen so much. All of the icons I actually have on my second page are the same icons. They are just bigger now so more easily recognized and better defined. So far everything i have added to my WAD I have been able to move around and place them anywhere on the screen that I want to. The only acception to this is the today apps. You can seperate them apart from each other more with pixel adjustments, but thats it. The time and ram and storage meters actually came with WAD along with a couple of others that i removed. It workes kind of like pocket plus in that way.|

I got my mda almost back to where it was b4 the hard reset... I think it was the wififodum or whatever its called that kept messin my mda up.... the hard reset did fix the msword error that someone else was getting........
bout to install my dialer skin again and do another backup... but one question - when you need to restore from a hard reset using the backup, you have to use the pc or restore from sdcard??? |

A bit disappointing to hear about your experience with WAD, although I was wondering if it would be a resource problem. The virtual desktops have to "live" somewhere, and the plugins have to be loaded and running whether or not a virtual page is showing at any given time (it would kill performance to have to load a virtual page and its plugins on the fly when you show the page). So -- this HAS to be heavier than the Today screen by itself, and HAS to be heavier than Today screen plus Wisbar (without WAD).
I'm also concerned because you saw this resource consumption without even going in for a fancy or complex 3D desktop of any sort - your background was simple enough so that it should have been very compressable. More complex images would eat even more resources. I love the idea of virtual desktops -- just don't know if the resource trade-off will be worth it... |

But I got no issues with it at all, and based on the reviews I have read http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/in...=3&p=478&more=1, it is arguably one the best browswers in the market today for a PPC, and growing on the PC platform too. So my feeling is, as always, you can please some of the people some of time, but no all the people all of the time mentality.
There are several other products browsers, thank goodnes for consumer markets , that you can try. NetFront 3.2 is considered also arguably one of the best. I bought NetFront 3.2 for WM2003, but soon found out it did not support WM5, yet, so stopped using it for now. But it supports Flash on WM03, lots of features. Keep it in mind, cause it will support WM5 very soon. And there is Thunderhawk, it is also considered a top notch browser. I like this one alot too. I tried this browser, the landscape mode is beautiful, cause the comany who designed it, is also a font corporation, but what detered me from keeping it was the charge is high, and if u really like it, they use proxy and charge a small monthly fee. Thunderhawk Review: http://www.mobiletechreview.com/sof...thunderhawk.htm Try thunderhawk: http://www.bitstream.com/wireless/ What do u think I3onk. I got u going on Opera, what is your personal experience on the MDA with Opera? |

Great game, a little slower than gfDoom, but awesome feeling and sounds. The question I had on WAD is how do you get to the virtual pages from the desktop? |

If I have to go to a virtual page to see Spb Diary, for example, i might as well go to the contacts virtual page, instead of using Diary on virtual page? Anyway, you crack me up
, cause your a trooper man!! You will give any darn thing a try and give it the best shot. But like u already in the 15 minuts I spent on it, felt, I was glad to restore my entire enchalada back to Spb Plus and Diary, plus my the great Tray Launcher, you turned me on too Bro ![]() |

It backs up everything on MDA, makes a mirrow image of your PPC, every darn thing on the device, with the exception of your SD card. So if you utilize the 40 or so MB's on Flash, it will backup every app you installed. I for example, have loaded all my neat apps I like in Flash with keys, etc., so that if I need to restore, I get everything back like a mirror, don't skip a beat. You may want to also hack the registry using tweak2k2 or if your brave, use a regeditor, before loading the rest of your apps in flash, then do ur first backup. Cause sooner or later, it's not a matter of if, but a matter of when, like now, and u will be happy to have that self extract file which will put you back on top of your game plan, without too much trouble.
The key fact about backing up is to do several on different stages, so that you can always go back to a stage that u know looked and worked well. Like when I tried WAD the other night, I went back to my 1st stage with just hacks and flash apps, then loaded WAD. Once I figured WAD may not be for me, I then went to my 3rd and final stage backup and restored the way it was, like a mirror restore. I did not skip a beat and was up and running as if nothing happened in less then 10 minutes ![]() |

Well NOW, for some reason, I think my installation may have made the decision for me. Even when I do a reset, my MDA is acting differently than it did a week ago. Some apps aren't consistently starting up correctly, and now when I use Voice Command to change profiles via pocketzenphone (PZP), the PZP icon display doesn't change properly and I can't really tell easily whether the profile has changed or not. A couple of other odd behaviors as well.
So...I'm thinking that something I've done may have scragged the current install. It would be GREAT if I could simply fall back to one of several prior backed up configs - perahps one without PZP installed, or without ContactBreeze or PocketBreeze. But no...I don't have any backups like that to roll back to. So many it's time for me to follow your lead...if I have to do a hard reset and reinstall apps, I should do take incremental backups along the way this time. Do you store all your various backup versions on a single miniSD, or on your PC? (sorry if I missed the details in your earlier posts). I've got a 1gb miniSD in my MDA now (2gb ordered a couple of days ago). Wondering if perhaps I should use the 1gb to hold several backups, and then swap in the 2gb for "everyday use" (music, data files, email attachments, browser cache, etc). Suggestions? |

I have the other three, One from when I have OEM TMO ROM (Just in case i ever have to go back to it for whatever reason), one from 2.17 install, and now i have the last two from when I went with the 2.17 ROM with the 1.12 radio ROM. I know what apps i like to run now so I dont do a backup after an install of every app. I just install all the apps then get my ringtones set, message tones(ie..special ed saying I GOT MAIL!! when I get an email HEHE) and things like my voice dial recordings and such. Then I back up and go on from there.

On anotehr note, another one of my trial periods past. Resco file explorer. I just got done purchasing it from handango. Instead of just getting the explorer with the reg editor and the ftp addon. I got the multi pack for $10 dollars more. Also includes the resco keyboard pro which trial anded for me yesterday. Also has a nice picture viewer and editor. Came with resco sticky notes too, but I dont see myself having a use for that. The reg resco explorer with reg editor and ftp addon was$25, the keyboard is another $20 So i think I got the better end fo the stick lol. Now I just have to update my cab install forlder, install them and do yet another backup LMAO. |

Message tones are in .wav format and they are in the windows folder. I make my own ringtones and message tones. The best way to find the files you want is to google them or to try and get them from a P2P app like limewire. I use an app called mp3 cutter to make my ringtones and message tones smaller. |
