I'm kinda glad we didn't have the internet when I was in Junior High and High School in the 80's, too much to worry about

And if they don't have it, check out AllOfMP3.com bro, cheap cheap very cheap, shocking too, cause I use to pay .99 cents, popular cds for .11 cents per song???? Also best site I have been too for music I like, and I use to have Rapsody monthly subscription which I canceled, and iTunes, ha o.k. at best..

what more cheaper then free? i get all my cds and songs from a major database and libary of songs (with the avoidance ofa p2p file sharer "Napster" etc) "how"? u might ask...well not anything new but people do upload WHOLE cd's for the public to download...and the most Important part of this is that its totally Illegal ;p now downloading the cd then selling them...hmmm that might be a lil bit pressing the envolope

Unfortunately, "old news" gets recycled as "new news" every day. Take a look at the articles in the average PC magazine, camera magazine, wedding planner magazine, newspaper "technology" column, etc -- unless they're profiling a brand new product, the topics are rehashed year after year after year. Dateline's stories could be months or years old...

The only reason they work, though, is because (as you noted), a lot of people just aren't aware of these topics - even if they're old news to a lot of us. So-- each new generation of parents learns about vaccines (plusses and minuses), childhood illnesses and risks, how naive they really were about protecting their kids even though they thought they knew it all, child predators, etc, etc, etc.

Also something for teens to keep in mind -- even though the technology and terminology has changed, there were predators around 30 years ago (and a thousand years ago), just as there were issues with sex, drugs, bullies, peer pressure, etc. Might seem inconceivable that we were ever teens having to deal with all that...but the basic nature of human beings hasn't really changed that much in the last couple of thousand years -- just the trappings of culture and society.

Re: technology - I'm glad to see more people getting technology-literate. Must be uncomfortable for some of my friends who really can't deal with things like wiring or programming the VCR or DVR, and having to be totally at the mercy of their PC when Windows decides to act up. But a bunch of us are actually pretty tech savvy, despite receding hairlines! I've personally been working with computers since before the first pc's, in almost every role from programmer to CIO - and I have to remain current. It's also fun, too, which is my real motivation to keep up to date.

So...back to your topic: which Agile popup problem? (sorry - I browsed the last few pages of this thread and don't see it).

Posted by: ilvla2

That's true, human nature hasn't changed, but the ease at which porn, child porn, stalking, and other junk can be accessed by anyone online, including kids is shocking.

Not sure if this will help -

Take a look at Start / Settings / Personal / Sounds and Notification

Go to the Notifications tab, click the Event dropdown -- there should be a couple of items that relate to connections. When you select these, you should have a choice to "display message on screen". Again - not sure this will help the specific issue you're describing, but it's worth a try.

Actually there isnt anything in the sounds and notifications that will help you with this issue. if you try tweaks2k2, there is an option on it to disable go online warning. There is also an option that will let you either have GPRS always on, or show a disconnect button.

Although you shouldnt have a problem with GPRS kicking you off wifi unless you actually lost the wifi connection. Wifi overrides the GPRS. If you have wifi turned on, and you are within a wifi area, you will leave GPRS and connect to wifi. If you lose the connection, then you will reconnect to GPRS.

I've been online since before the WWW (gopher, compuserve forums, etc), and have also run sites with big audiences, chat, etc as well as usenet newsgroups (ugh!) - I'm VERY aware of what they might run into out there, so we talk a LOT, and they surf in the same room with one of us...

So far my younger one has only been to sites like sesamestreet.com -- and the older one is VERY aware of limits, and that privileges depend on staying within limits. But I also keep a close eye on the places he visits. Way too many loons out there...

Keep up the good work! Same with me, heard about it, but till that night, well you know. A long time ago my son was 13 and on line using IM. I created anonymous account and sent him a msg, and he accepted conversation. I could not believe the person stuff about his home he volunteered in a friendly conversation. And my son had been couched, and drilled about these things many times. I am very carefull having been in computers for all those yrs. I then went dowstairs, and confronted him about it, and he denied it. I then told him whom I was online, and he simple turned red.

The problem is not always our kids, is what u think they may or may not be doing. Also it's their friends and what they learn, that is the creeper that kicks you in the butt. Kids are kids and friends are in fluential, no matter how great u think u control that environment, and believe me, without getting into details about my life, discipline, and all we have done, I never say never, cause at my age, I learned that the hard way. The best way for us was to NEVER allow a computer in a private room with our kids, always in public eyes, cause life is too complicated.

A good friend, one I would consider a very successull family man, once told me, protect your children's inocense, and give them all the love you can, cause they have the rest of their lives to learn about the crap thats out there. I took this to heart many moons ago.

Hey kids don't come with a book right? Parenting is a personal experience.

Just get yourself a copy of activesync 4.0. That will be all that you need. It should have come with your MDA when you purcahsed it.

The reason they jacked the price up is because it now included unlimited pic and text messaging now, instead of just text.

ActiveSync install involves two parts - the part on your pc and the part installed on your mobile device. A normal install STARTS on the pc (running the setup.exe), this installs the pc components and then installs the mobile device components.

You can download ActiveSync 4.1 from Microsoft at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmob...tivesync41.mspx

holy smokes...they jacked the txt pacakge up to $14.99?!?!? crazy...

i'm running out of things to do on the mda as well...but i still enjoy it

who really likes opera better? i find that in landscape mode it sucks...while in most cases it is faster, for the pages i visit, PIE works better (using in landscape mode)

I got the unlimited messaging @ 9.99 per month about 2 weeks ago because my rep told me they'd be raising the prices. It does however include all kinds of messages, not just text.

This really is a great value when you've got several lines on a family plan. I only have three lines right now using this, but it's already been great. Unlimited messaging of any type across all lines on the family plan for one flat price ($9.99 in my case). As a result of having this - and not having to even think about running over limits, extra charges, etc. - we're all using a lot more messaging - voice, pictures, text. We're getting a lot more use out of the service in general. Great deal. For anyone that doesn't have it yet -- as I recall, you can apply this to as many as five lines on a family plan: $2 per month per line for unlimited msgs of any type seems like a pretty great deal to me.

hey jonazen i have another question for ya...do you know if T-zones be compatiable with Agile? caz i kinda need internet wherever i have signal...and i know you can have Tzones with the MDA but i mean is it posible for me just to pay like 6 dollars extra so i can always be connected to the internet and have IM as my primarly texting usage via Agile which would help me with the charges of my sms usage?

Not sure how T-Mobile is limiting ports now with T-Zones (which, I think, they're now calling T-Mobile Web). Used to be easy to do pretty much anything Internet with just T-Zones. Then, when they started limiting ports, I know that a number of people started proxy settings to bypass T-Mobile intended proxies and port restrictions, so people had mixed results.

In general, my impression is that T-Mobile has been methodically limiting port / protocol access on T-Mobile Web, so that it really becomes "internet light" -- allowing you to browse the WAP sites that are part of their designated T-Mobile Web service, but not allowing you anywhere else. I don't know if it's still possible to work around those limits or not. I'm sure other people here have done this, and may still be doing it.

If nobody else jumps in here with info to offer, you might try searching HoFo using google (this gives you specific pages with relevant posts, instead of just pointing you back into a massive thread). For instance, try the following search arguments with Google:

Quote:
"T-Mobile" "T-Zones" Proxy site:howardforums.com

Wish I had some personal experience to share that would help. I jumped on the unlimited Internet deal while it was still $19.99, and intend to hang onto it until they offer something better -- I need real internet access wherever I go, and can't afford to have it work in some areas but not others - so I'm really not up to speed on the latest T-Mobile Web issues. Hopefully you'll find something on HoFo that will help, or somebody who can share more specific info with you.

I'm not sure why a few of u here have had issues with opera? But I am sure it is for real, that I am not questioning. But for me Opera works absolutely great! I use it in Landscape often, and looks great! I try opening Opera in regular mode, then jump to Landscape mode with no problem.

I have gone to several sites were PIE has issues and Opera has no problems. Also PIE does not render sites as nicely as Opera to me. I use to go to Movies.com with PIE, but movies.com started telling me to upgrade PIE, and suggested..Opera. I just don't get it,and wonder if were not using two different Opera beta versions.

The only other person I turned on to Opera here is I3onk. He once had issue, and I uploaded him my beta version, and not sure what happened, but know from his previous posts, that he got hooked on OPera.

It is by far the fastest browser I have ever experienced on a mobile device. Out side of the fact that it is in Beta mode, I can't wait for the official release, cause many discussions going on, and I am sure lots of little issues will be resolved, but for my FREE buck, it's the best browser in the market for Mobile devices today. I still use PIE but as a 2ndary option to Flash sites.

The interestesting point to me is, your using same MDA I have, same features, same hardware, and ur having a different effect. I guess that's life with computers.

I even downloaded Opera for desktop to use today, will see on that.

I got news for you bro on MDA things to do. I have hacked the registry away, I have upgraded to 2.17 ROM, I have upgrade Skins, Themes, today screen is completely changed with WA, Spb Plus, Diary, Tray Launcher. I have changed my boot up loading graphics page to the Gremlin poping out with "WERE BACK". I have bought apps that changed the way I use a ppc, like, acceesing my LAN, the WEB, Music Mp3's, games, business applications. I, like I3onk, and Jonazen, have done it all on the MDA.

Yes there comes a time when you got to sit back and enjoy and use it for the purposes it was originally designed, business, school, what ever that purpose is for you. I just sit back and enjoy the modification changes this thing went through. Ocassionally I may change Themes, cause that's all that is left for me, and possibly get to show it off once in a while, cause most people who see "IT" don't know where to begin . And my skin came with some interesting sounds, resembling noises of my startup Gremliln screen, so "IT" sounds alive! Just enjoy it bro , while it lasts, cause one day, not to soon I hope, "IT" will end up, like old retired scrap in the movie Starwars .

On T-Mobile pkgs. I probably should have kept the 19.99 a month deal 3 years ago, but GPRS was painfully slow on websites and that it drove me bunkers. I have not tried EDGE, but hear good things, but not for the price they want. I already have a 140 dollar family pkg for 3 phones and 160 minutes per month, and FREE Wi-FI, that's good for me.

But if you're like Jonazen who needs online 24/360 then it makes sense to have it any any coast.

They go in 'My Documents'

Not sure exactly what you're asking. If you mean how do I initiate the send, well on the Mac there's a program called 'Bluetooth File Exchange'. I just choose a file and click the send button.

Sorry man that's my fault, I should have given you more information. It isnt an istall. Just put the app into your MDA somewhere(mine is in program files\traylauncher) and run it. Sorry for the confusion man.

Posted by: i3onk

As far as BT sending and recieving. If you are recieving a file via BT from another phone, they will want to find the file, copy it and it should give them an option to send it to a BT device. If you are sending, this is where it gets tricky. I had issues sending files via BT from the WM5 file explorer. I use resco file explorer and it works great. You tap and hold and there is an option to send to. You tap that and it gives you like 3-4 choices, one of them being BT recipient. It searches for the other BT device and then you click it and hit send. They accept and away you go. Any files you recieve via BT will go straight to your my documents folder.

This is TOTALLY off topic, and has nothign to do with the MDA. I just thought I would share this with you guys cause I thought it was way cool. Those of you with kids I think will find that they will be excited about it.

Thats a life webfeed from a cam just above a bald eagles next in British columbia. The Eagle in the nest right now is sitting on its eggs. They should be hatching within the next 2 days or so. They have already started cracking their way through the shells.

ENJOY! I know I check it quite frequently from my MDA.

Intersting experiment bro, but nothing worked for me. I first tried IE, I got complete site, black screen no eagle img. I tried my new installed Opera Desktop and got complete site, with Windows Media logo but no Eagle img. I tried MDA using Opera got again complete site but no window for img, I tried PIE and got complete site but same as IE on desktop, just black screen no img??

I haven't tried it on my MDA yet...but it came up fine in Firefox on the pc...had the black window at first, but I suspect it was just buffering the feed initially. After that it came up fine.

Next - must tried on the MDA, although I don't know what kind of plugins it will be looking for...

Damn once again, incomplete info from me. WTF is wrong with me? Im slipping. The web site can be pulled up on the MDA but the video doesnt show up, you need the actual link to the live feed and it will open your WMP with the link.
Try sending yourself an email with this link, thats what I did so I always have it at the ready, Havnt figured out how to setup a shortcut to it yet.

mms://array.galaxytelevision.net/hh001

Send yourself an email with that link in it. When you click on it on your device it will open WMP and the site. Sometimes it opens a black screen. Its not 100% reliable. If that happens retry it a couple times, after buffering it will load up.

Thanks i3onk -- I had tried sending my MDA the link to the page, but as you noted, PIE only showed a black hole where the video feed should be. I guess it doesn't use WMP as a PIE plugin...?

Just emailed the video feed link to my MDA.

This is serving a dual purpose. As well as checking out the video feed on my MDA, I'm curious to see how long it takes for email to reach my MDA using T-Mobile's mail proxy sending "silent SMS" notifications to the MDA. I set up the T-Mobile website to monitor one of my email addresses that I created with one of my ISP's as a dedicated "mobile email" address (i.e., "jonmobile" @ my ISP). I am NOT having the MDA poll the server -- just wait for T-Mobile to send a "silent SMS trigger" to the MDA.

First test this evening blew me away - the email arrived at my MDA about a minute after I sent it to my "jonmobile" account. So I tried it again, and this time it took about 14 minutes. Hmmm..... Just sent a third test. I'm starting to think that T-Mobile may have their mail proxy set to check on our third-party email accounts in something like 15 minute intervals...I'll do some more testing to see if a pattern becomes apparent...

In the meantime (sorry for off-topic -- I'll take my answer offline or in a new thread if it helps!) -- anybody know where there might be details about the format of these "silent SMS" triggers?

I would suggest TCPMP (The Core Pocket Media Player) instead for videos (also for just about any media). Open source, loads of cool features, and very competent.

This is your best bet. I dont even know if there is a real player for mobile. I think I am going to look into it though, because I like atomfilms.com and cant watch the films on my MDA right now.

As far as the TMO email trigger, I think it is 30 minutes by default. I dont know if there is a way to change that trigger. If you find a way let me know, I would love for it to be every 5 minutes maybe 10 if possible.

OK I havnt tested it yet, but just got it. Real PLayer for PPC

http://www.realnetworks.com/industr.../ppc/index.html

I will test it right now.

Re: RealPlayer - would be nice, but I've grown to loathe the way Real and Quicktime try to shove the paid version down your throat all the time on the pc, and also leave all sorts of stuff running in the background (updaters, quick start, etc). Feel almost like viruses. I just hope the ppc version isn't like that! Looking forward to your comments after you test.

Re: TMo email trigger (i.e., "silent but deadly SMS triggers") - I haven't found a way to change timing yet. Would be great if it could be 5 or 10 mins...

I got the traylauncher on my minisd and don't know how to use it. kill me later...do I have to list the location of the app. then location of the app. I want to place on the tray? again...sorry.

There has to be a way. On my last phone (Motorola A630) there was an option to check email every 15-30 or 60 minutes. It might just be a setting within the phone, I'm not sure.

Sure - you can have the MDA poll as often as you like. That's easy (see below). But I wanted it the other way around -- I love the idea of the silent SMS from the server. This way your phone can be notified as soon as email hits the server -- but if nothing comes in for 5 hours (hah!), your phone doesn't have to keep connecting and polling. Saves battery if you use the SMS trigger model. Very similar functionally to BB.

Anyway - I checked the TMo "My Email" pages online, and there's no place to change the frequency of having their email proxy check your 3rd party mail server. It is what it is. Only thing I'd be curious about on this is whether they send silent triggers faster if you're using their own mail server (i.e., tmomail.com).

So - to have your MDA poll a server:

Start / Messaging

Tap Menu / Tools / Options

Select the email account you want to poll (tap it)

On Screen 4 of 4 (Server) tap the Options button

Options Page 1 of 3 lets you check a box to "Connect and check for messages every..." ...and you can specify the interval in minutes.

I would still prefer silent SMS triggers...but I don't think I'll have that luxury. Would still like to learn how to format them, though...maybe I'll use an SMS proxy to send them from one of my own servers...?

Sweet thanx man. I never checked those setting before. I set it to 5 minutes, but now thiking baout it I think Ill cvhange it to 10. I changed it from the internet to tmobile gprs also. Dont know what that will do. Guess I will find out after sending myself a sample email.

As far as real player. I am having issues connecting to atomfilms right now. I tried playing other media from my phone(movies only so far) ad it wont play anything. Not even the video shot from my phone.

i may have missed it in the thread, or searching online, but i have a question. Actually 2.
1. When i am streaming with WMP (Live TV through ORB) everytime it buffers, it comes out of full screen mode. When i had my MPX220, it would stay in full screen through the buffer process. Is there anyway to force fullscreen so that i do not have to keep putting it back to fullscreen?
2. When i am tethered via bluetooth to my laptop, i have a hard time downloading certain things. I usually get a "HTTP 500 Internal Server Error", yet if i type the address into the MDA, i can then D/L with no problem.

I have all the settings corret (to my best knowledge). If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Also, if i did overlook the answers in this thread or elsewhere, tell me what to search for b/c i may just be phrasing it wrong.
THANKS!

ok...disregard last. I figured out how to put apps on the tray launch. pretty easy. however my second icon won't show. it'll be invisible...I can click on the spot where the second icon should be..and it opens up fine...just no icon...and ideas??

I tried downloading i3onks' icon file...but it wouldn't work. trie installing it on the device directly...still didn't work...hmmmm..

gonna try a soft reset and get back to u guys...aloha.

Posted by: i3onk

You have to use the icon viewer to see the icons in my icon file. Then you make a note of the number of the icon(ie...-11) then you add that to the end of the shortcut. Ill have to post a more detailed description of the tray launcher when I get home from work today. Thought i did though, I dont remember. Check back a few pages and Im almost positive that there is a pretty detailed instructions on using the tray launcher.

As far as the real media player for PPC. IT SUX. Dont waste your time people. Doesnt do anything for me with atomfilms.com. Doesnt play ANY media file that is on my device right now. I find that odd. I uninstalled it and will forget about it after I hit submit reply here.

Phatman. Cant help you with the BT problem, but as far as WMP popping out of full screen when it buffers, happens to me too. I havnt really looked into it, but I dont think there is a work around for it.

I was on Engadgetmobile.com yesterday, and they had a story saying an update with A2DP was available. What does this mean for someone running the stock MDA rom?? Does this mean that we have to wait till T-Mobile re-releases A2DP in the AK2U update?? Or can i just use this now?? And anyone know of some good bluetooth headphones??

I had talked to T-Mobile about this a few weeks ago, and they said that it sends every 15 minutes. Obviously, your first email was sent right before they did their send. They said this cannot be changed (unless they decide to change their system, of course (lol).

When you talk to T-Mobile, make sure that you ask for the group that knows the MDA/SDA. Both times that I talked to that group, they were very knowledgeable and helpful (especially one guy that I talked to--he really knew this device, and tech in general. We spent over a half hour talking about the MDA and computer tech in general).

Sorry about the format of that last message--not sure what happened, but I was replying to the above quote from Jonazen.

Well I dotn know why, but I am having major issues right now with my MDA. There are too many to list here, just letting you know that I am going to flash back to OEM TMO ROM. I havnt actually read of someone saying that THEY did it, just that it has been done. Cross your fingers.
Im going to run through my apps and see what may be causing these issues. Will let you guys know how the ROM flash went incase you ever need to flash back for warranty purposes.

Thanks for the answer...I actually figured out what you meant to do in the first post...

So...if it's really 15 minutes that's not too bad I guess. On the other hand, if I can learn how to format a "silent SMS" to trigger the send/receive on the phone, I can have one of our own workstations or servers monitor the mail account(s) and shoot off a silent SMS trigger to my phone when there's new mail waiting. It's low overhead to monitor the mail accounts for just a few users this way, so it's reasonable to check the server every minute or two.

The thing I've got to do now is see if I can find some documentation on T-Mobile's "silent SMS triggers" (I don't know if the format is unique to T-mobile, or is something of an industry standard).

Hey i3onk -

Bizarre about your MDA - I wonder what's up.

Mine got a bit weird last week and I thought I'd have to hard reset and reinstall all my apps...but then I wound up uninstalling a single app (PZP), doing the manual "cleanup the things uninstall left behind", warm reset, install latest updated PZP...and the entire phone starting acting better.

Still working well for the most part...except for one oddity I noticed after my last warm reset: the link pointing to "capnotify" started showing up in file explorer after reset!? Capnotify is supposed to be executed as part of startup -- not displayed in explorer. That's just strange. But then it all seems to be running fine. I'll have to keep an eye on this.

Also still seeing some memory leaks that annoy me.

Thinking about possibly loading 2.17 ROM naked and trying that first. Then gradually adding in some of the tweaks and enhancements from xelencin's cooked version, and also being more selective about the add-on's I load into it. Something is still not 100% right with this whole package (although I love it overall).

how do I disable GPRS, IE tries to connect to the internet through GPRS occasionally, but I don't have a GPRS plan. I'm only planning to connect to the net through wi-fi.

I have actually been thinking about doing this for a couple of weeks now, things just not working right. Not connecting to WIFI when I want too. Having issues with getting texts and emails(had to soft reset to get them). has just been a couple wierd weeks with this thing. Now that I knwo all the apps I want on my MDA, Im going to see how the OEM ROMs work with all that stuff on it.

I just got done flashing the OEM TMO ROM. Worked fine. The trick is to do a hard reset then flash, then hard reset again after the flash for the OEM ROM to get installed. Going to flash the radio ROM now. Still debating on weather or not to install the OEM EXT ROM.

You can try checking the TCPMP site for plugins that may allow you to play rm files, but I would suggest recopying your movies into avi or mpeg format. AVI would be the better choice of the two.

OK well I think if I have to return the phone, I am screwed. Reflashing didnt seam to totally restore the OEM ROM. The Edge icon is still there instead of gprs(hope tweaks2k2 can fix thiis), the battery icon in the tray is gone, and it still has that crazy xmas tree looking icon on the top. Maybe its the extender ROM apps that is doing this. Guess I will have to try going back to the OEM EXT ROM.

WOW! I forgot how fast this thing is when its a fresh hard reset. Wish I could have all my apps and keep it like this too :S

Aloha! Can you see the icon where u created the lnk shortcut? If yes, you may have left something out on the Tray Launcher path to this app.

I generally created shortcuts of all the files I wanted on the Tray Launcher in My documents, in a folder I called shortcuts. The reason for this, I can see that they all work from there, and my weekly backups include My documents folder too.

now i'm gonna find some good games...and work on managing folders and monitoring my ROM and RAM. and i want to take another slow look at the wisbar icons and colors again. do you guys use different icons for the stuff you place in the tray?

thanks for looking out for the retard..haha!

I just installed A2DP on my MDA with 2.17. I can't see what to do with it right now, but I don't have a BT stereo headset to pair. All I can say the installation went smooth, and the registry changes all took effect. For all sake and purposes I believe I am A2DP ready!

I am still researching.

I actually gave a link to an icon library file i made with like 100's of icons in it. I use different icons for everything. I have web shortcuts and stuff I made my own icons for. I use the default icons for the apps that have their own.

What the heck is going on man. Your having issues ha, weird. How about just hard boot, nothing works right?

I read your posts, but just makes no sense. Ur gettig what?? A X mas tree icon on top? I lost the battery a while back too, but just went back to my original 1st backup and it came back, then reloaded all my stuff again, then backed up again. Weird what up with you bro??

Why don't u try reloading 2.17 again?? Maybe something went wrong with install 1 st time and only now showing up. This time only use the RUU version since u already unlocked.

No its not the RUU I dont know what it is. You probably dont remember the xmas tree looking icon becuase you are using the wisbar now lol. I looked at it and said WTF is that HAHA! I dont remember the OEM today screen icons though, has been so long. I have just been having alot of issues. Not getting my texts and emails without doing a soft reset. Messages app not coming up but the buttons change their names and the task bar said messages. Agile messenger started not loading right and locking up on me. I dont know, maybe I should just do a fresh install with 2.17 and see how it works. Ive already reflashed the OEM TMO ROM so Im going to try it with all the apps and see how it works. I have been wanting to do that anyways. Check the memory leakage and the speed of apps opening and working. Before the flash I never really had a comparison to go with. All I had was people in forums saying it worked better. So now with the OEM ROM back in I can test it for a day or two and see if it and the OEM RADIO ROM are actually crap compared to 2.17 or the 2.12 radio rom. This may not be a permanent reflash. I am much more comfortable about the flashing process with awizard and the ruu's now so I have no problem going back to 2.17 or to a newer rom if it comes out to try it.(granted I wont be the first) Ill be an app guinee pig but not for ROM LMAO!

Just keep in mind u already have done a OEM ROM backup so I would try RUU without unlocking. It works very quickly, but the idea is, it's a different approach from the way u 1st did it.

On another note, I must be going crazy tonight. I installed A2DP, and can't wait to look at the HT820 stereo headsets. Also playing around with overclocking. It's currently at 180MHz so tried over 250MHz, but when I tried 300MHz it reset it self. The good news is, it just goes back to 180MHz. So I can try now maybe 280 MHz and see what differences are in speed. Over clocking does not stay when you reset, so I have to set this up on my Tray Launcher.

Interesting gadget this thing..

Update: O.k. so it worked at 288MHz, but does not like 300MHz..

Update: O.K. it locked up at 288MHz, gues I got to reset and try less.

Update of the update: O.K. it's steady at 276 MHz. I got to test it out. Some of these guys are just overclocking it when they use Skype. When device goes idle it defaults back to 180MHz, so u want to just overclock before running certain apps. Interesting bro..

I don't play with Skype or TCPMP. I should download TCPMP. Some gues are reporting 250MHz in tcpmp. I need to get some bench mark utility. Ive seen jpg bench marks so something out there to use.

Yeah I know if I reinstall 2.17 all I need to do is run the RUU. Im going to test all my apps running on the OEM though to see if I can tell the difference.

keep us updated on the Overclock. I would like to know if it really makes a huge difference.

Good luck bro.. Let me know the differences.

I downloaded TCPMP, and interestingly it has a benchmark feature. So I will be messing around with this now..

Hey I think ur going to be o.k. I would try the RUU, don't mean to sound like I know what ur results will be. But for me, If i tried something and gave me issues, I would try something a little different, and u have that choice with RUU alone. I never tried ur way, but have not experienced ur issues either. and hope not too bro. However, even do I got the battery issue, and ur right there was something else up there on to bar going on, but my restore simply got rid of it. Now I have not had all the other issues, but then I think I use my MDA a little differencly, which could mean different results for me.

Nice thing about these devices, in a sense we all have different needs and use them in different ways. I believe that is why we have different experiences. But if I were u, I would just test it out on a basic hard boot, and install nothing except those basic apps u really need daily, and test them, then just do a simple backup of that setup. Good luck to you bro mean it. Good nightee

Well so far everything seams to be running really smoothly. The only thing I havnt installed is AEbutton and SBP pocket plus. My reboot times are much faster and the apps are opening much faster. So im guessing as far as my slow boot and slow app response is concerned, is has to be one of those too. The fact that I can reasign any button could be ok if its AEbutton, although I love the app closing action it has. if its SBP pocket plus, I can always place my most played games on my startmenu, since thats all I use it for now(gd waste of money there lol, I payed for both of those aspps.) Oh well live and learn lol>

Night all!

2.how to un-install any software from MDA?
3.is there any speakerphone given in MDA?where?
4.how to set personal message tones?

I didnt mess with real player enough to figure out play lists and such sorry

To uninstall apps go to start\settings\system\remove programs

There is a button for the speakerphone on the dial pad when you are connected to a call

You can only set individual personal ringtones. For message tones you can only select one for all texts. Go to start\settings\sounds and notifications

Are u still on OEM ROM, or did u go bck to 2.17?

Not sure why Spb pocket plus would give u issues, weird, but who knows, maybe it's in conflict with some other utility or app u use, since we both use some of the same apps, but don't have identical setups.

I may also do another hard boot, for no other reason then to see if I get better RAM management. I may be kidding myself . Contrary to popup msg I am going to install Spb Plus and Diary on SD card this time, plus other apps too, just to see what happens with RAM. Cause there is a guy on thread below "Cyberlord" on HOFO that seems to have every Spb product ever made loaded on external card, plus loads of software and I thought I had plenty, on his 2Gb miniSD including, and he claims to be getting 20MB of Program Ram, which is 1 MB more then I can get. I mean this guy has tons of stuff on his device.
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...56&page=3&pp=15

Anyway got to get bck to work.

I have spb pocket plus, diary and spb weather all loaded into my main memory as well as wisbar advance 2 and I have 20mb ram free. I just checked it again. Runs very, very smoothly on the 2.17 rom at least for me. I have them all installed on main memory since the mfg. suggested that since there have been some reported issues with installing the spb plugins on to the storage card.

Posted by: i3onk

Well I figured while im testing things out I might as well test a couple more things. First being, I created my own EXT ROM packet to add a few aps into EXT ROM.

flash/ActiveX
Pocket Screen Capture
MemMaid
TCPMP

Will see how they work added to my EXT ROM. Cross your fingers, I know I am lol.

Posted by: i3onk

OK well that didnt work LMAO. Thought it would. Guess I will have to do some research on how to add things to EXT ROM.

I have no problems with MDA, and I also run everything u do, but it's little things like my Tray Launcher take up a tiny bit more RAM. Who knows, we would all have to have excactly the same configuration and apps to see if we all get same results. I'm currently overclocking which is interesting, and have installd the A2DP. Tomorrow I am buying some Motorola BT stereo headsets, anxious to see how this A2DP works with stereo.

Overclocking News for you MDA troopers..

I have been playing around with overclocking, and have found interesting facts about it. It's interesting cause our CPU is 195MHz yet it benchmarks at only 180MHz. Figure that? I can over clock to 260MHz but the differences in speed are questionable. However, I am using Tornado to do this, which I understand, is not designed for the HTC, but will work. When MDA shuts down, or goes to sleep, it reverts back to 180MHz, or when u reset it also reverts back. I believe that's good cause I would not want to stay at the higher MHz all the time. Example, I tried 300MHz and device shut down. I tried 276MHZ and system froze, I tried 268, and all worked for a while. If this was permanent I would have been screwed. As a result of the experience I wont go any higher now then 250MHz, but that is incredibly much higher then the 180MHz we work with. But I think I will only use it before running an application like TCPMP, or if I need some app to work a little faster. Will see..

So the over clock is a temporary effect. Again good to overclock if u run TCPMP, and are trying to run videos, or something. I need to test that but I just started playing around with TCPMP. Right now I also need more Storage like a 2 GB.

It would be sweet if we could ad a cab file with all the utilities we like using, like us said.

Posted by: i3onk

Actually it adds the cab files. Not just one file. I need to investigate more on it but I will figure it out damnit *$&#.

try smartskey. It has an overclocker on it that is supposed to be at like 240Mhz, and be stable.
What the hell, Ill test it right now. Give me about 20 minutes or so. What are you using to benchmark again?

What are you using to OC and Benchmark?

O have also decided to get another 2G minsd. I want one dedicated for media. Anything movie, mp3 or pix will be on my second 2G. I will also install tcpmp onto the second card so when I want to run it, it will be in the same place on either card and work.

Posted by: ilvla2

I know you were't asking me, but I'm using OMAP, and I have it set in Smartskey to keep it at 240.

Indeed, the Rat Pack ruled da roost!

Posted by: jakeypoo

ok i still havent gotten any help so maybe someone in here knows whats going on.. i got voice command 1.5 installed on my mda and when it goes to announce either whos calling or my next appointment i can barley hear the voice! its like muffled and the ringer or notify sound drains it out.. i know someone has to know how to fix this! oh and im also running the 2.17 rom. it did the same **** on the stock rom to! and how do i use my own background that has a 100% opacity cuz it seems to have only 30% opacity when using this custom 2.17 rom. but i was able to select the opacity i wanted with the stock rom!

Have you benchmarked it? Are you sure it runs at that speed?

Posted by: ilvla2

No, I haven't benchmarked it, but both OMAP and TCMP report it at 240, and it does make a big difference in speed when running.

Posted by: jakeypoo

ok i got the opacity problem fixed but someone needs to help me with my voice command 1.5 issue lol! im going crazyyyyyyyyyyy

Posted by: robpet2

geeeeZZ I missed a lot since the last 3 pages, been busy with work....but back to the mda - I feel jon about not updating the rom yet I've been debating since I got my mda and logged onto hofo again....
spb pocket plus and diary have been givin me some issues lately( sometimes the icons for diary disappear, or it says insert storage card where spb diary is at on my screen ~ but that's probably cause all the files for it are on my storage card...) I do about 3 to 6 soft reset a day ( I think that comes from switching from PIE and Opera kept making things lock up) .... haven't really messed with movies on mda yet ( waiting for 2gig card-placing order probably tomorrow )....
if you have spb pocket plus you have to download pocket play(even though wmp sucks it still lets you play music from today screen ).... STILL SEARCHING FOR QUALITY APPS TO PUT ON MDA

Right now I have the following installed..

SpB diary
Spb Pocket Plus
SpB Weather
Agile Messenger
Tray Launcher

Sometimes when I try to log in to the agile messenger, it'll freeze. I'll sleep my MDA and go about my business, then turn it back on and everything will work fine. As you can see, I don't have much running at all times. I believe I'll have around 20mb while nothing is running in the background. Why does it run so slow at times? Thanks guys..

When it's slow, do you still have 20mb available? I still see memory leaks in mine. I can start the day close to 20mb and have less than 10mb available by night time. If that keeps up, and the memory drops below 4mb available the device really starts to bog down (doesn't usually happen in one day, but I keep an eye on available memory).

Good, I thought I was the only one. That is a prob with agile man. I wish there was another alternative out the, other than OZ and pocket MSN, but right now there isnt.

Posted by: henrykahn

how can I run smartphone apps and games on my MDA? they are in a .sis format?

Posted by: nyvram

Hey, as a point of reference, I am running the following:

- spb pocket deluxe
- spb weather
- smartskey
- omap (at 240mhz)
- MS voice command + Daryl's 'voice enable'
- beemer null keyboard
- eten dialer
- agile
- tcpmp
- directpush

Not sure which of those consume RAM & which are more 'tweaks' to the os (Eten?) that don't consume memory.

I have run rock-solid at 240 since the day I got the phone (about 2 weeks now) and never had a problem. The one time I screwed up my synchronization and accidently deleted OMAP, I could tell the difference RIGHT AWAY...the videos for the first time were choppy & and everything was working poorly. When I discovered OMAP was missing (and probably some other stuff screwd up) and reinstalled, it went back to its normal performance...which is quite good BTW.

In short, I can't CONCLUSIVELY say that OMAP is why my device runs so well..but the evidence is strong that when it wasn't running my phone was very sluggish.

I currently have 8.35MB free..but I haven't rebooted in a couple of days..let me soft reboot now & see how my memory improves....[time passes]...ok, back up and with directpush running, I'm hovering somewhere around 19-20MB

PS Has anyone removed 'voice speed' or the 'voice commander' DLL that installls by default now that you're using voice command? I wonder if that would help my memory heap.

I removed "sddaemon" from the startup folder -- my guess is that this shortcut invoked the daemon that loaded up the cyberon voice commander DLL... I haven't deleted the other cyberon files, but I don't think any are loaded anymore.

Posted by: hiokispunja

ok...an agile issue. i'll uninstall and try maddoggs' aim.exe app. maybe it won't give me problems this time around.

I do believe when everything is bogging down, i'm sitting around 14-18mb. i do have agile installed to the device so to limit the problems with loading from the card if there would be any.

i haven't tried overclocking yet. just wanted to get comfortable with the apps i would use a lot before doing anything else. thanks for your ideas!

where do i get omap?

Are you sure. I dont think I have voice commander installed and have that in my startup folder.

The cyberon software is the default voice "speed dialer" installed by MS in WM5 Phone Edition. It's the one that lets you record voice tags and assign them to a few specific numbers. You can always just move the "sddaemon" lnk file out of your startup folder to a temp folder, reset, and see that everything works fine. Any problems, and you can simply move the lnk file back into startup and reboot (but you won't have any problems!).

Oh Ok, well I use that quite frequently so I dont think I will get that out of there lol.

I tried a new method of installing my apps today.

After a hard reset and getting all the nasic settings finished I made a backup.

Next I installed all the apps that dont take resources unless you run them. Memmaid, tcpmp, resco..stuff like that. Then I made another backup. Then I installed the memhog apps. SBP pocket plus, Pocket breeze, tray launch & contact breeze, and made one more backup.

I am booting up with a steady 22.6M of ram That is the best I have seen since I bought this thing and got all the apps I wanted.

Keep in mind, I havnt installed wisbar or agile yet, and Im sure those will kill ALOT of resources. That is the next step to be done later today.

A2DP News Updated for those interested Troops. I know this is long, but it’s worth the reading! What’s your experience with A2DP? I would like to know if there is anything else out there besides Tornado!

The other day I upgraded to A2DP. The process was a pretty simple. I followed the instructions on the XDA-Developers site, downloaded the .zip file provided, which included 3 .dll files and the tornado cab file. Several tedious changes have to be made to your registry, you can elect to do it manually, or thanks to Tornado cab which changes registry for u. The only manual thing is to copy the 3 .dll files to ur windows folder and soft reset. For the most part you will not see changes, until u buy a BT Stereo headset.

I went to Radio Shack and bought the HT820 Stereo Headset. Nice looking BT headset, feels solid and comfortable. I paid a whopping $132 with tax for them. On eBay their bidding for $24.00 plus $36.00 Shipping, a good deal, cause u can buy two for the Radio Shack price of one. So no matter what I will be returning them. The logic was, try before you buy mentality, cause if this does not please me, I can always return the headset, but on eBay I may get stuck with them. Besides that’s a savings of over 50 bucks anyway!

I paired the HT820. A new feature [ ] “Wireless Stereo” was available along with [ ]“Hands Free”. I then launch Windows Media player. At first I got no sound on HT820, but playing around with connect button got music. I was not completely impressed? I felt the volume and bass were low, and I could not get it any louder. I wasn’t even sure if I was hearing Stereo? So I enabled my regular H500 BT headset, and also got music. Was A2DP working or can I do this without A2DP?

Long story short, I restored full backup WITHOUT A2DP, and got my H500 BT Headset going with Windows Media. So I quickly paired HT820 again, BUT this time there was no feature [ ]“Wireless Stereo”? But after a long hassle time playing around with the HT820 connect button I finally got music, although it sounded like mono on dual speakers. This was now driving me bunkers. Does the Tornado A2DP give me Stereo? Thus I deleted the HT820, and re-load the .dll files into windows folder, ran tornado cab again and soft reset, and then paired HT820 again. But this time I needed to play music that had good stereo separation. I wanted also to compare the sound with the mini jack stereo headset u get with TMO MDA.

Conclusion: The A2DP Tornado works with the HT820 and you are definitely getting stereo. But is the stereo as good as the mini jack stereo head set included with MDA? NO! So I loaded TCPMP to see if there were any differences from Windows Media. Of course TCPMP just blows Windows Media away with the Audio Preamp features. Boy this made a difference in the sound of the HT820, but was it still equal to the mini jack headset? Is the HT820 worth keeping? Interesting TCPMP shows the Clock Speed as 170Mhz.

While I was at this madness, I decided why not over clock CPU to 257MHz before TCPMP to see if there were any differences in the sound experience. TCPMP then reported clock speed at 237Mhz and sound was questionably the same, or better hard to tell any more cause TCPMP has neat features like an equalizer too. It seems A2DP with the HT820 really need help from TCPMP. The sound actually got much better. But was the sound equal to the mini jack headset? I disabled all the features used with the HT820 and TCPMP with the mini jack headset and they mini jack set sounded pretty on it’s own.

Will I keep the HT820? Maybe, it’s wireless! Besides there is still one un-answered question. Is it the Tornado A2DP just not designed well for the Wizard? I will find out with a newer Wizard version. For the the next couple of days, since Radio Shack is in no hurry to get them back for credit, I will play around with the HT820. I can say this, if you don’t compare too much to the mini jack headset, the BT Stereo starts sounding better.

See my results with A2DP talks about overclocking. Quikly I used OmapClock. As far as bench mark I wanted to use TCPMP cause it has a Benchmark feature, but it sits still when you use it. However, options/settings shows the clock speed. Still messing with it.

I can say this, if you don’t compare too much to the mini jack headset, the BT Stereo starts sounding better.

I spent some time on the train from Princeton to NYC and back yesterday -- was once a regular commute for me, and looks like it may be once again starting pretty soon... Anyway - this time, I had about 5 hours of music on my miniSD, and took along with wired headset (mini jack) to try.

As you noted, the TCPMP equalizer makes an enormous difference. I started by boosting the base, and then found I need to boost the high end as well -- all in all, the sound was pretty good. But then I could here the flaws in some of the MP3's -- some of them must have been sampled pretty poorly -- crackling at the high end and loud passages was subtle before, but really noticeable with a headset. I'll have to weed those out of my collection, and be more discerning as I add new music.

The mini jack headset doesn't fit me too well. The little earpieces are apparently supposed to fit in your ear - but it wasn't a great fit for me. One thing I noticed, though, was when I was trying to fit them in better, the bass response jumped -- but when I let go and they wiggled loose again, the base dropped off. These must really depend on having a snug fit into the opening of the ear canal for best response.

Looks like I'll need a replacement for these. The wire isn't so bad for listening to music. I may forego the stereo bluetooth setup for now and see how it evolves -- get a good wired set in the meantime with a 2.5mm plug (or use an adapter).

I was griping in another thread about this -- but in "actual use", I found that I really wanted more and better control in tcpmp when trying to navigate directories and playlists -- especially something I could operate with one hand. Also -- I need to find the best way to transcode files, and get a good sense of the bitrates that are worth sticking to for the MDA. Is 128 the right balance? More than necessary? I want to get past the experimentation stage and start creating and managing a media library for this device!

Update: I have concluded that either the Tornado A2DP and it's .dll file are not ready for the Wizard, or the HT820 Stereo Headset sucks. I am listening, Jonazen would appreciate this, Souther Man (Crosby Still Nash and Young), and I have been going back and forth in a very critical guitar area between the mini jack stereo headset included with the MDA, and the HT820 Stereo Headset, with same amp and equilizer settings on TCPMP and there is no comparison. The mini jack headset wins heads up!

I am going to test the HT820 with my Dangle and my Desktop stereo music for the heck of it. Just to see if the headset has better quality stereo quality. But I think I will be returning the BT headset for credit, and waiting for A2DP for the Wizard, or in a Rom upgrade.

I have come to the same conclusion. I am now seriously using http://www.allofmp3.com/. I have used others MP3 sites that charge more, but this site is awesome! I find everything I want. I spent 10 bucks and got tons of music for .11 cents, .30 cents, entire CD's for 1.13 cents, incredible, don't know how they do it. In addition, when you are ready to download a song, it gives u 3 options Low quality (128 kbps), High quality (192 kbps)
CD quality (320 kbps).

I am starting to believe I need a 2GB in addition to my two 512Mb's, cause like I3onk and you, I need a collection of my music, and based on what I hear with TCPMP I may have to download the CD Qualify 320 kbps. I downloaded a soundtrack from the movie hackers in CD quality and it was 21.6 Megabytes in size, BIG. Thinking that at this rate I will not be able to fit how many songs on my 512MB, so I started to download Mp3's in the low quality 128 kbps and their sizes were very much smaller like 5 - 10MB generally. But now I am not sure I want to sacrafice CD quality.

What do u think Jonazen?

I am starting to believe what u have just said about "must have been sampled pretty poorly", makes sense.

Thanks -- this just helps confirm my suspicions. I'll probably wait as well -- maybe the official A2DP upgrade for the Wizard ROM will be better, and hopefully we'll start seeing some competition in the bluetooth stereo headset market.

Re: Southern Man... Out of my first 5 hour playlist, I happen to have included both Southern Man (Neil Young's righteous condemnation of bigotry) and Sweet Home Alabama (Lynyrd Skynyrd's rocking hit in which, among other things, they celebrate being rednecks and tell Neil Young to shove it). Both good tunes, and always fun to listen to back-to-back.

I hadn't listened to music on headphones in a while -- and had forgotten what a great experience it can be. When my family isn't around, I can crank my big speakers up enough to get a completely "immersive" experience, but it's neat to be able to do that while sitting on a train -- and not bug anyone else. Some music is great for that. On the way up to NYC and back last night, I listed to a bunch of CSN, CSNY, Steve Winwood at age 16 in the Spencer Davis group, Winwood and Eric Clapton in Blind Faith, both the original Buffalo Sprinfield and then Bonnie Raitt's version of Bluebird (btw: I did the theatre lighting for a bunch of Bonnie Raitt concerts when she performed at Univ of Penn when I was there in the 70's, had backstage passes, etc -- was so cool). Jeff Healey on there too, Hendrix, an obscure recording of Eric Clapton playing Mason Williams' tune Classical Gas, some Black Crowes, Boston, Eagles, old Bon Jovi, Herbie Hancock, Steely Dan, Earth Wind & Fire, Beatles...and then I added in some Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clark, Natasha Bedingfield.... I can see that I'm going to need to rethink the whole approach to miniSD's... Definitely need to find a cheap source and get a BUNCH of them, create libraries by genre...or maybe playlists that work together.....

Unfortunately not. WEP can be 128bit encryption designed to keep you out of a router and it's network. There is a way around it, you would have to hack that network and that my good bro would require serious knowledge and tools that are illegal, if not impossible.

I myself have WEP (128bit encryption) on my own personal home router plus Mac Filtering, probably an overkill but don't want any strangers roming around on my network.

Wi-Fi is a FREE radio frequency and for the most part any one who does not use WEP is most likely a business offering it as a free service, or a novice who does not enable WEP. The other interesting point is this. You do not need to use WEP to protect your router. You can actually just juse Mac Filtering alone. Cause once u use Mac Filtering no one can access ur network without you phisically inputing their computer phisicall address on your router. A phisical address is found on a table top system by using the Run command, type ipconfig/all to see phisical address, on the MDA you can also find the phisical address.

My son in law does not use WEP, but he does use MAC addressing, of course from living with me for a while he learned that. So when I visit them, he just puts my MDA Mac address in his router. But his neighter upstairs has FREE BEE wirless.

Also somone people hide their SSID on a router, like my SSID is PapyLAN. When you drive around town using a tool like Wi-Fi Companion http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=20127, you will see many SSID's around either using WEP encryption or not. Or you may not even know they exists cause they are not publishing their SSID.

I guess we're thinking about the tradeoff in sampling rate in terms of the current cost of miniSD's. As they come down, I probably wouldn't hesitate to sample at higher rates. But if I kept everything at 320kbps, I probably couldn't fit more than 5 or 6 hours worth on a 2GB drive. At today's best prices, that's something like $60 -- $10 an hour for recorded music.

I'm thinking that, for now, I'll experiment and see if I can get consistently reasonable sound at 128kbps -- most of the 128kbps recording sounded good last night. Only a few were choppy or harsh. Not sure if it's the sampling rate, or maybe the software that was used to do the downsampling that did the damage to the few bad files I have.

I WILL, however, keep the "masters" on my harddrive sampled at 320kbps if I have them. Hard drive space is cheap these days. Also, with software able to do batch transcoding, it means that I can have big playlists on my harddrive at CD quality, and transcode entire directories of them for download to the miniSD's. Then...as miniSD's get cheaper, I can rewrite them en masse at better sampling rates.

Also wondering if I'll have an entirely new device in a year or two anyway! There's so much new stuff coming out -- I expect to see more devices like an MDA on steroids -- with a GB of working memory and a 500mhz processor -- maybe a year or two away...one more reason to keep my master library at the highest quality on the hard drives, so I always have the option to recreate mobile media as needed for whatever my current platform happens to be...

Honestly try that MP3 site I gave you, I have been up nights just checking sounds out, cause the price tag is so cheap man. Check it out really. I too have been checking music out like Jethro Tull, Iron Butterfly, ELP, Ten Years After. I am having so much fun! The MDA got me going with MP3 music cause I walk and jog daily about 4 - 7 miles with wifee and we sometimes talk, but many times just get serious and listen to music while excercising.

Try that site, let me know your feelings about it, at least check it out.

Looking at it now. Are you using their "allTunes" beta software for downloads and purchases? Looks good in the screenshots...

I should try a few downloads. The prices they're listing are for music sampled at 192kbps...maybe that's a good trade-off. Need to listen to a few to see...

Actually your thought is quite interesting! Cause I too will be upgrading devices as soon as something comes up similar to the Wizard with more power all around. I don't want to pay 1500 dollars like the device I posted a while back with 8Gb's built in RAM and ROM, that is what they told me it would cost about 2K, don't mind paying 6 hundred. I honestly believe that the MDA we have lacks in power and causes many issues.

Like today for example, I was pulling out of garage and realized I needed some files from my server. I was in a hurry and had to time to go in house so I accessed my LAN from vehicle, and for reasons I can't explain everything that could have gone wrong went wrong with this device. I usually use commander since I have hacked reg and enabled network folder, along with Pocket LAN commander easily accesses my shared folder on a system, but it locked up, I had to soft reset, waited for ever, then it locked up again, not sure if because I had 33% signal, or what. Got frustrated and left without files. The rest of day MDA was fine.

I love the MDA, but see it becoming my wifes best friend in near future. I love all the applications we have installed, they make my life better, but with 64MB RAM, it chokes. You and I know running an XP on 256MB RAM is stupid, on 512MB RAM fis choking, you need at least 2GB or better. So what makes a PPC any different. A PPC should have at least 128 MB RAM standard, if not 256. I will almost bet you would never see a problem. And yes at least 400- 512 MHZ CPU. Storage is relevant to me, at least 512MB ROM, that would satisfy all your needs for utilities and all the stuff we use, plus u can put everything that's on ROM plus sytem on Spb backup, and we should have the option to use external cards with 2GB's to 8 GB's. But I think it's like my termite company once said, after laying out traps around my home. I asked them why would termines go there as apposed to my home wood, he said, what would u eat first, a hamburger or filet mignon. Well why would a company give us the filet mignon of electronics?? Even if they could!

I just go to http://www.allofmp3.com and login, not sure if it's beta or not. good question. I just put 15 more bucks on tab and will probably download who knows tons of music.

Update: I see I just went to front page and saw the take part in beta.

Posted by: MadDogX007

WOW! I connected and paired the HT820 Stereo Headset to my dongle on my PC and the sound and volume is absolutely incredible for BT!! That means it is clearly the Tornado A2DP on MDA without any doubt!!

Update: I also made a call earlier on the HT820 on MDA in stereo and it sounded really nice for a call. I may have to consider bying this in eBay for 70 bucks to use possibly on PC and VoIP while listening to music, or maybe the MDA phone will kick in even though I am listening to music on PC. hmm. let be get someone to call me on cell..??

Posted by: MadDogX007

Wow amazing it works.. While listening to music via dongle on PC media, the darn HT820 picked up the call from MDA, then went back to music on PC. WOW!!

Posted by: MadDogX007

yeah I m going to keep the HT820 for business purposes on VoIP in home office, while listening to music, and playing games, even on MDA games, it stops for calls, really neat, it's awesome. For MP3's on MDA is sucks!! But for now the Tonado will stayon MDA for the other features.

I kid you not, I just got up away from PC and walked half way across the house to kitchen and still get the darn music from PC, and I imagine calls too..

Wow, this thing has other sides to consider while waiting for official A2DP release.

Another update: On MDA I could'nt get the next song search feature of the HT820 to work, but on PC is works nicely.

Wait.. That's not true, I was playing single songs on MDA, not selecting a library.. Sorry MDA people.

I'm not sure there is a special way bro. Just install the thing on your MDA. One of the great features of this generation of PPCs WM5 is they are Smartphone PPC's. I posted a while back a link to a review done on this issue, and the editor who wrote the issue installed all his smartphone apps on his WM5 PPC.

His article, if I can find it again, was about the two markets merging, and how great that was..

Have you tried loading a smartphone app on your MDA?

PocketPC/Smartphone application compatibility

Another selling point of WM5 is application compatibility between the Pocket PC and Smartphone versions of the OS. Previously, developers had to produce two seperate installs for their programs if they wanted to work on both PPC and SP. Now, the same version of a program will run on both devices, at least in theory. It's about time. The need to have seperate, incompatible versions of an application negated any real benefit from running similar operating systems on Pocket PCs and Windows Smartphones.

I tried several Smartphone programs on WM5. Six ran perfectly, two ran with graphical errors, and one would not run at all.

The programs which seemed to have the most difficulty adapting graphically were both games, which tend to be coded for a specific screen resolution. Most existing Windows Smartphones have a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels. Games and other applications designed exclusively for this resolution, when run, were pixel doubled to 352 x 440, then displayed in the upper left corner of the PDA's screen. This allowed them to use about half of the total screen area. Other programs and games, including those which support the newer WM Smartphones with 320 x 240 QVGA screens, should run in full-screen.

That's a cool feature - nice! Can switch between paired devices on the fly when a call comes in! I'm impressed.

Re: AllOfMP3.com - I read up on it. Apparently it's a quasi-legal operation that's been something of a legal black hole for a few years. RIAA (recording industry strong-arm boys) haven't been able to nail them, and legal opinion about them generally concurs that it's not illegal...although their premise seems a bit skanky. But it's been years, and to date, there are no opinions declaring it illegal.

Here's a decent into to it on Wikipedia:

Looks neat -- I like the idea of BT multiplayer / interactive software. Lots of possibilities.

I'm heading to bed now. Was up in NYC last night and didn't get home till after midnight -- then had to start up at 6am again this morning. Time for some sleep!

later dudes...

Interesting Article.. Hey take advantage of it, it's not like myspace.com free music or Kazaa which I stopped my son from using for Mp3's long time ago.

What I like about allofmp3 is, you don't have to down load anything to get access. Anytime I don't have to install something Im happy.

I like this part...Thus, it appears possible that "importing" digital files from AllOfMP3.com does not constitute copyright infringement but does constitute a violation of customs law. There is no private right of action for violations of customs law, as there is for copyright law.

or this one.. However, there have been no rulings in U.S. courts to date regarding the specific legality of purchasing music from AllofMP3.com.

Ok Im a little worried, but not going to let this one bother me too much. Hey Im carefull bro, just like u. I don't want some fool knocking on my door, about illegal crap!! I like allofmp3, and feel they are right, and they do pay some artitist I guess, and Russian laws are what they are..

I can't find memaid to save my life. Is it one of those secret applications like traylauncher was? You guys are the best help ever!

I believe I have given many applictions on my ftp site: I am changing servers, but it should still be working. As a matter of fact I will be putting more apps that work with MDA on new FTP like MemMaid, Tornado A2DP, TCPMP, etc.

Not sure why u get so many issues hiokispunja, especially on apps I have tested successfully on MDA, like Agile, and AIM 2.0. Although I do not subscribe to too many things like MSN, or Yahoo, so AIM 2.0 is fine for me.

MadDog, and everyone else, goto dinarsoft website(makers of memmaid) and checkout the tap text and especially the launcher. the launcher is a great addition to the tray launch. giving you unlimited options for launching from the tray.
they taptext is kind of ugly on the startmenu bar, but can be moved left or right depending on where you like it. its nice though not having to type to log into websites and such, and having A LOT more predefined text inserts for any app, not just text messaging. both get a big thumbs up in my book. together they only take up approximatly 75k of ram, but definatly worth it.

I decided to get rid of wisbar. just too much of a memory hog. I'm going to find a way to get the sounds working without it. I have traylaunch shortcuts for everything else it does. and I don't really need a cascading start menu.
I boot up with about 19.8M of ram after starting agile. without agile I get almost 22M. I have this thing humming right along now

I installed them on ROM, which is automatically done for you if you select device. I have heard from other boards that installing Spb Plus and Diary, on miniSD works just as well. Although I wonder, cause the SD card loads a driver on bootup, but it works for them. If may change configuration.

Up early? Well i get up early everyday about 5AM, and because I work a lot out of my home office, I frequently check HOFO.

sounds good. man....i'm now thinking of doing another hard reset and do the intervaled back-ups every now and then. i think that would be better for me.....still want the agile to work and tried the one off your ftp..it was the same one I had before so i give up for now. might try it again...but not right now. kind of fed up with slow-motion.

I am currently changing my personal ftp and adding some new stuff. I will let you know when it's up and running. Cool stuff.

The backup is very smart choice. it works like a charm. I got back to my latest and greatest when ever something is going wrong as a result of a last install. Always does me justice. I don't skip a beat and get up and running ASAP.

After all you and I been through, that's how you see it ha... Kidding Bro.. I hate to see you get rid of Wisbar, great tool. And franckly if you check Memmad, running processes, you would notice Wisbar only takes up about 452KB's, less then half a MB?

Well if you get skin sounds working without WA, let us know, cause I never say never

Posted by: hiokispunja

Haha..ya. It takes so much time to do the full restore from scratch. Sounds so much easier to pop the 128mb minisd in and get back to normal. So...Agile will be my absolute last install since "it" seems to be the cause of my issues.

You have any inputs on that free exchange e-mail that's floating around? I'm still looking for an e-mail service that has true push capability. I use hotmail and find it annoying to have to sync my mail manually. Having an account that clocks every so many minutes is better then manual action.

Oddly, my install of MemMaid will NOT show me running processes or any of the DLL's for optimization -- never has. I may try uninstalling and reinstalling...

Re: Wisbar -- I'm torn. I love the skins and placement of features, and I'd even like to try Wisbar Advanced Desktop with it for virtual pages. Just worried about bogging the machine down too much.

Maybe I need to get omapclock and smartskey first...

Update: Very interesting my bro. Sometimes Memaid locks up on me when viewing the processes, not sure why? For some unknown reason they don't always come up for me. For me in Memmaid that is the last icon on the button right corner. When they don't come up I soft reset and see them.

You learn something every day here bro.. Smartskey, I researched this, very cool, never new it existed. I will have to try this Smartskey with my litwal fuend (scareface humor) OmapClock.

hey on another note. If use Pkzip to zip up files for FTP purposes. I must be old man, well we know don't we.. Anyway kidding aside. I use to be so darn good at compression crap when I ran a BBS two moons ago.

How do you zip up a folder with subfolders and then have them extracted to those folders? Does that make any sense? I mean PKZip is easy to use on a cab file, or exe file. But what if I had a cab file and some folders to zip up, how do you get the folders with sub folders to zip and unzip into their perspective folders... Sounds confusing, Im confusing myself.

You remember? I know I3onk uses some sort of compression. He uses .rar, and he can change it to zip. I don't really care for rar cause most people still use winzip. Anyway any light on matter.

I just upgraded MemMaid to 1.6, and all the features seem to be there - I can see running processes, DLLs, etc. Weird though, I closed MemMaid, and when my desktop was redisplayed, it seems that PocketBreeze had disappeared. Too strange...so now another soft reset to see if it comes back.

Awww poop! Reset just finished, and my desktop is still scragged! The ONLY today item left is iLauncher. I've been checking through all the menus, and it's looking like a major part of PockeBreeze was somehow disabled or uninstalled. Too strange. *sigh* I've been digging through all the dirs, Today options, etc., but it seems to be unusable. Ugh. Will have to explore a bit more, but this is REALLY irritating.

Yup - my next experiment... I'd like to add a bit of life to my device -- perk it up a bit.

Off the top of my head? No. Sorry! I always figure it out as I get there...used to use a lot of pkzip a LONG time ago, then used winzip for a while. But I've been using PowerDesk as a sort of "File Explorer on steroids" for the last several years (MANY years) -- and it has compressed file management built in -- and also shows compressed files as if they were additional subdirs. Very convenient, and handles all formats including RAR, ZIP, etc.

I vaguely remember that one of the reasons I moved first to winzip, and then to PowerDesk, was that I was beginning to find pkzip's command line a bit irritating. I coudn't even tell you now if it HAS a GUI interface...

Wish I could be more help! If nothing else, you can download a free trial for WinZip (think it's 30 days?), and then become nagware, or something like that.

In the meantime, I'm now left having to decide how to get pocketbreeze working again. Do I uninstall contact breeze and pocketbreeze and then reinstall? (ugh -- I still never took backups of the installed config, so I'll have to do this all manually). Not a happy camper right about now!

Winrar is actually a great compression tool. I use it for all of my compression with exception to cabs. The cool thing about it, is it can zip up items too instead of rar'g them. All of the zip files you have gotten from my savefile urls were compressed with winrar. When you click add to archive, you just change the extention to .zip. When you mouseover the file it will say winrar zip archive, but it is compatible with winzip. I love winrar, have been using it for years. I have never paid a penny for it.

As far as the launcher from dinarsoft, this thing is cool. I used it to get to alot of websites today testing it. Works like a chamnp. After reboot it takes a second to reload the icons on it when you click it in the tray, but after that they come up lickety split. Here are some screenies of the launcher.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d...k/Screen003.png

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d...k/Screen001.png

When you install it it puts itself into the tray. If you dont have enough room, simply move one of your tray launcher icons into the dinarsoft launcher.

That icon by my startmenu button is the taptext. This, while looking like crap the way the icon just sits there, is a great app. need to add soem predetermined text to a file or website, just set it up in there. I have added my login names and passwords(obviously not labeled as such) into it. After the hard reset the other day I had to relog into all of my regular websites. Just a couple of clicks and it was entered into the correct spot. The icon can be moved incrimentally to the left or right, but not up or down.

Update on my MemMaid 1.6 bizarro experience:

I had been running 1.5, and had just upgraded to 1.6. I then ran the basic and advanced memory cleaners, looked at a couple of other screens, and quit.

After that - several items were missing from my Today screen.

It seems that PocketBreeze no longer was running, nor was PocketZenPhone ... and then I discovered that the "lock device" today item was also gone!

I checked all the available configuration dialogues, and could do nothing turn these items back on -- they were no longer listed as choices for Today plugins. I checked through all the PocketBreeze directories and found nothing that would help. I wound up uninstalling PocketBreeze and reinstalling it - after which it started showing up properly in the Today screen again.

Next - PocketZenPhone - in this case, it turned out that just the Today screen plugin had been wiped out. So I reinstalled that ("PZPToday"), and it started working properly again.

Final mystery was the Lock Device today item. That had disappeared without a trace, and no longer showed up as a selectable Today item. So I did some searching, and learned that this happened to a few other people over the last few years. The suggestion was to do two things:
Look for the DLL reference in the registry, under the key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Today\Items\ "Device Lock"]

I had a copy of my old registry from a few weeks ago, and pulled it up to take a look. It appeared as follows:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Today\Items\ "Device Lock"]
"Order"=dword:00000024
"Flags"=dword:00000000
"Options"=dword:00000000
"Selectability"=dword:00000001
"DLL"="shutil.dll"
"Enabled"=dword:00000001
"Type"=dword:00000004

What was weird was that in my "live" registry, the value for "DLL" was no blank! Somehow it seems that MemMaid wiped out the reference to the DLL! I keyed it in again, save the updated registry and did a soft reset. Happily, the Lock Device today item showed up once again.

I'm now afraid to try MemMaid again. I can't imagine what was going on that made it wipe out these three Today items, but it's really unnerving.

That is wierd that you are having these issues with memmaid. I have had no issues at all with it. It has always worked great for me. Let me upload mine to my savefile site and I will give you the link. Maybe you just got a bad install or something.

madDog, you said you were having problems with netfront 3.2? Well there is a netfront 3.3 that is now compatible with WM5. I am about to install it. I will let you know how it goes, so you dont have to go through the trouble of DL'g it and such. Maybe if it does work ok, you will be able to contact them and get a free upgrade to 3.3 for your MDA.

Will get back to you with my review really soon.

Let me know what you think of the taptext and the handy launcher also.

Well, Im not too impressed with netfron. I think Opera works MUCH better. I actually think I like PIE better than it. Havnt had a chance to check out any java or flash pages with it yet though.

Speaking of flash. I have installed the macromedia flash activeX and I still seam to have problems running pages with flash to their fullest extent...ie...flash buttons and such.

What's weird is that I've been using MemMaid 1.5 for weeks. Then I JUST tonight downloaded and installed 1.6, and this is what happened. I have NO idea if it would happen again, but it sure makes me hesitant to try it!

Maybe if I get with the program and take backup snapshots of this whole config. Then, worst case, I can simply fall back to the last working version if something weird happens.

That's what I'm thinking...but I DEFINITELY have to backup first....and I have not yet installed backup software.

About to do so now. Just to check - you guys have been talking about SPB Backup? Is this the backup that lets you restore EVERYTHING from a saved, compressed version -- applications, settings, etc?

If so, I'll buy it NOW, download and take a snapshot immediately.

Yeah...my 1.5 would only show an empty page for processes. Ver 1.6 showed all the features, but I had that bizarro experience. Maybe it's something to do with having had 1.5 first, and then loaded 1.6 on top of it? I though I had deleted all of 1.5, but maybe something weird was left in the registry that confused it...?

Sometimes we get caught by surprise with all of this upgrading. All my backups include MemMaid 1.5 now. So even if I went back to first stage backup, it would include MemMaid, I think. Maybe it's good to just have a backup with nothing installed but hacks, owner, settings, configurations, etc??

Cause that is my greatest pet peeve with WM5 uninstalling sucks!

I would have to uninstall a bunch of stuff to do that...everything feels stable right now...but if I ever have to do a hard reset, I would definitely take various backups including:
- naked ROM install (sounds nice!)
- setttings, configs, basic registry hacks added in
- basic apps added
- experimental adds added on top of all that

...but first...just curious about weather apps right now. I'm about to buy SPB Backup...and if I choose SPB Weather at the same time, I can get it for $5 less than buying it stand-alone. Is this one you guys use?

Thx...ok (no need to reply to same question on other thread!). Not urgent for me either, I guess. Especially since I can get weather via any number of web pages, or even have TMo send it to me as a free alert (I think) -- no chg for the SMS, since I have unltd messaging on all our lines. Think I'll skip SPB weather for now -- no need to bog the machine down more and use up more Today space.

The best I have ever used, nothing is a perfect science, but Spb Backup comes close. It backups up using a self extract file bro, you don't even need to load Spb Backup to restore. And it backs up like image file, including everything u put in ROM.

When I restore, it's like mirror image of what I had, including all my settings, hacks, ROM, you don't skip a beat.

Especially since I can get weather via any number of web pages, or even have TMo send it to me as a free alert (I think) -- no chg for the SMS, since I have unltd messaging on all our lines. Think I'll skip SPB weather for now -- no need to bog the machine down more and use up more Today space.

I have Pocket weather from SBSH. I dont have it on my today screen. I just load it up when I need it. Have it set to refresh when I want it to, not when I boot it up.

I think I am getting rid of agile for good at least until they come up with a better version. Im going to try aim 2.0 for now. Wish there was another option to log me onto aim, yahoo and MSN all at once though.

Weird bro. You turned me on to Agile and I tried it several times with no issues on AIM. I just don't use it daily, or weekly sometimes sorry to say, maybe that's why I don't run into issues with it.

Okay...feeling better about this, and having more fun now!

I just added SPB Backup and SPB Weather (couldn't resist weather -- only another $10 buying it same time as Backup!).

Took a bit of futzing, but I found a good weather source for US cities, and added Princeton and NYC. Works beautifully!

With everything installed and humming away, with Weather on the Today screen, I still have more than 17mb available. Not bad, and the device is still quite responsive.

My first backup with SPB backup just completed, and my MDA is resetting. Backup of *everything* is on my miniSD card, so it's right there with me if I ever need it while on the road. Too cool!

Last thing for tweaking will probably be to try out OMAP clock tomorrow along with Smartskey. But I've got to say, this device is getting really sweet!

Here's the screen as it looks now:

Also read somewhere that there's a utility that lets you put a lock/unlock icon in the bottom icon bar, so you can remove the lock Today item...might check that out as well to clean up the desktop a bit more...

For now though, it's time for sleep! G'night MadDog, i3onk, et al...

Looks nice man. All you need now is some icons in that empty tray of yours hehe.

Yup...need some games. I wonder -- I'll bet I can use icons to point to playlists...that would be neat...

One of the nice features of iLauncher is that I can create a set of launcher icons and either display it on the Today screen bar (right now, that the thing below my SPB Weather bar), or display the contents on the icon bar at the bottom. So maybe I could display a bunch of music playlists on the icon bar at the bottom, and keep the upper Today launch bar for apps... Lots of choices here...

After I get omap clock and smartskey in place, I have to see how well the latter lets me handle the MDA one-handed. I can see that icon design/placement will help -- and if the machine gets fast enough with omap clock, I might consider once again using WAD to create multiple virtual pages...

Anyway -- g'night all... more tomorrow ...

That's good idea, cause every once in a while I hit it by accident. At first I thought this lock/unlock is a nusense, cause I had no use for it. NOW I use it all the time bro. I love it. My leather case is very tight around the MDA, and when I leave and use BT I lock device, cause MSVC works around it, and I don't accidentally press up against device and load a game or something that will take over and screw me up. So I lock it often now for just about everything I do. So it would be good to have it on Tray Launcher area if possible.

I see what u mean about Ilauncher, right under weather, but wouldn't it be more resourceful, if u used Tray Launcher? You would remove the icons from your Today scree into the bottom real estate are of your tray, and if we get the lock down there too, that spells more room. What u think?

Not sure why I changed my mind...but I really like it. I DO check the weather every day - generally on my pc...and now if I forget to check the pc, it's right on my Today screen, and it's more convenient than having to go to the web every time. Anyway - for $9.95, I couldn't resist giving it a try, and now I really like it!

iLauncher will let me do that also. You can create as many icon folders as you like, and you can optionally pick one to be displayed on the icon tray at the bottom of the screen. Just haven't decided what I want down there yet...
