Right now, I've got a couple of different email accounts I look at with the MDA. My "normal" business account just gets synched via ActiveSync when I plug in via USB (I'll be changing that later - just haven't decide how i want to do it yet). I also have a decided "mobile account" on another ISP, and have that one being monitored by T-Mobile's "my email" server - so I can also check my 3rd party ISP email account "jonmobile" via T-Mobile's website or via the MDA (having imported the "my email" settings from T-Mobile to the MDA).

Anyway -- I tried both accounts: sent email to my "mobile account" with a link in it, and also sync'd with Outlook using ActiveSync to bring the email over to my MDA. Both email msgs had links embedded in them (links to HoFo, actually).

...and both links were completely "live" -- one tap, and they loaded up PIE and brought me right to the page that the link pointed to.

I wonder if the link's "default tapping behavior" got messed up on your MDA when you started installing other browsers?

That's a good questions, cause you would think that is so normal, not sure, but I3onk had same issues, I remember discussing it with him in detail a few millinions posts ago, and also remember telling him when I got Spb Diary it worked nicely. Not sure, wish I knew.. Surprise you don't have your own POP accounts having your own website? My biggest pet peeve to that ordeal though, was the PB did not offer email links on Today screen. It seemed all the email was just text and links were not highlighted as links, unless that was an issue associated to the email issue??

A few posts up I3onk gave me this accessories TMO site. A littel bit costly, but great stuff. I am sure they must carry original stylus. http://www.thepocketsolution.com/st..._iv_accessories

Here's a TMO Stylus. It gives impression that it has pen, and that's a nice feature, I guess, but it also says no pen.. You be the judge.

I've got SPB Weather installed as a Today plugin. Looks great, and there are various skins available too to make it even prettier. I finally resolved the issue of which template to use. Seems that the WeatherNetwork template was pretty good -- but did NOT provide extra info such as humdity, windspeed and changes in temps forecast throughout the day. (you're supposed to see that kind of extra info when you tap on a day in the weather display). I searched a bit, and it seems that on the PDAGold website where there are about 10 templates offered, the one called "W_Channel" is really for the Weather Channel as a data source. When you read the explanations (very skimpy) for the fact that SPB Weather only includes a template that points to a Russian weather source, and then consider the fact that this template is called "W_Channel", it's easy to infer that there must be some silliness going on with WeatherChannel threatening SPB with some kind of licensing or trademark infringement legal action. ANYWAY - the W_Channel template is excellent.

I come back to the question, though, of "auto update over GPRS". I could have sworn that my install DID update itself a few times over the first couple of days. But for the past 24 hours, no matter WHAT I have my options set to, it will NOT auto update over GPRS -- I have to request the update (which works just fine!). Was there ever any resolution on this question???

With that in mind, I also started to look at SBSH Weather, Fizz Weather and WeatherPanel as potential alternatives. WeatherPanel certainly has a ton of features -- but I've read that it's HEAVY, downloading LOTS of info, sometimes tying up a device. Also - the lone developer seems to show his face perhaps once a year, so support is meager at best.

SBSH Weather sounds good, but I can't tell if it will auto-update over GPRS. Anyone able to comment on this? (i3onk - you have this, don't you???).

Thanks for any thoughts on this!

See you get me started on something then you want to abondon it .

At first I did not consider weather on MDA, but now I am glad I got it. In addition to business reasons, although was not immediately apparent, my wife is going on trip to LA, and my son is in Colorado Springs for another year. It's nice to see weather patterns in places my loved ones are at.

Spb Weather works really nice with Spb Diary's Calendar, cause weather also shows up on daily calendar days. I use the WeatherChannel template, and syncronized both MDA and iPaq to use city codes rather then zipcodes I was using, so both my wife and I have same graphic results. On my Wifes iPaq I simple let Spb weather update using ActiveSync, it's easier for her,a nd works well. On my MDA I update via Wi-Fi daily, it's easier for me. But I believe I have to refresh daily, which is not a terrible chore. I just got to remember to disable wi-fi before leaving home, battery wise. When I click on the weather icon i get Humidy, Wind, more than what I need, really.

The biggest issue I got right now with MDA is the settings/backlight. I keep telling it to stay on for 5 min, and it keeps reverting back, on soft reset, to 10sec. It simply does not do as I command.. . And unfortunately as we know from posts here, I have to soft resent often, which is a nuisense, and i hope fixed on the TMO official ROM. I hope. . And if so, I hope again, that we can upgrade from the 2.17 to TMO, especially since I3onk had issues reverting bck to OEM, and especially if the official ROM is better then the 2.17 But we should be able to upgrade to any ROM really I mean it just overwrites the old ROM, right?

Is there a hack for that nuisense backlight?

Posted by: robpet2

IS THERE ANYONE IN VA(HAMPTON ROADS AREA) with mda that knows how to do the rom upgrade... just got my 128 minisd card....

but my mda is doing okay without the new rom minus the java midlet part... I've hacked the hell out of my registry so I got most of the good stuff working(but always interested in new registry hacks).

OH YEAH

HAPPY FRIGGIN CINCO DE MAYO TO EVERYONE

I'd appreciate it.

I cut my weather updates to once a day with SPB Weather...main memory is "fair" now, I guess... It's 9:45pm and I'm down to 12.52MB, after starting the day at 1.98MB when I unplugged the USB cable at about 7am. Battery is down to 56% also, which is weird. I could have sworn it was lasting a lot longer before. I have to keep an eye on this.

Re: email - I DO have my own POP3 accounts -- about 12 of them. Also have 6 Comcast email addresses. I keep one these 18 dedicated as a "mobile" account. It's "registered" with T-Mobile's "my email" page -- they'll monitor your own POP3 or IMAP4 accounts and notify you via silent SMS when the new email arrives at your server. If you mirror these settings (e.g., POP3 and SMTP servers, logon and password) to your phone, T-Mobile's "my email" monitoring service sends the silent SMS messages to trigger a send/receive on your phone. It's ALMOST like push email -- the ONLY problem is that T-Mobile only checks your account once every 15 minutes, so there's a bit of a lag. Not bad for a free push email service, but I want to work on making it realtime (without having to worry about BB or exchange server).

ok guys I have a problem, this is WAAAAY off topic but I am having a major issue today, and really need to get it fixed. I was working on my gf's brothers pc. Installed more ram and tried going wireless network. He is running windows me. Wireless didn't work, so I removed the nic and uninstalled the drivers. The ram works fine. when I went to dial-up it got a 46666 kb connection, and showed it transmitting and receiving data. When I went to go to a website, internet explorer doesn't see that it is online. won't pull up any website. Keeps giving me a dns error. Aanyone know what might be causing this issue? really don't want to let her brother down. I feel really ****** right now

NO it doesnt. The silent sms is just a trigger to tell your device to retrieve email form your pop accounts. No charges involved.

Posted by: robpet2

I thought the same thing but sometimes you have to check your msg balance- I asked this manager cause of a problem with an old damaged phone that I forgot to return, and asked them about all the hidden charges and stuff since you are kind of forced to get the 30dollar internet package, and he said you get charged for the silent sms text(so I have to check my msgs like everyday by dialing #msg# then send...
oh yeah question to all, I have a 256 mb card right now and my 2gig card is on its way(found one for 69bucks with 7dollars shipping) but can I just plain old copy all the stuff from my 256mb card to my PC then to the new 2gig card without losing the original paths/correct links to programs... don't want to have to go thru the problem of having to reinstall everything.

I'm still debating this whole custom rom upgrade (having a lot of bad luck ) don't want my phone to turn into a brick / or ruin the chances of using the warranty if I ever have to.

Yes you can just copy all of your data from the 256 into the 2g and there should be no probs at all. The device sees a storage card as a storage card. Doesnt give each card an individual path.

I hate to make suggestions that may not help you, but I would tell your gf's brother to get away from ME. It was the worst OS ever. Windows 98SE was more stable. Anyway, lets see. I have not worked on a 98 in years too, since I had NT, and 2K, now XP. I have not worked with dial up for thousand years, so it seems, but I will assume your talking about an internal modem 56k that is not getting the job done. Also that your glr's brother is using AOL, or some ISP that logs him in, before u can use IE? The ISP software may be having issues now. The ISP has to log u in first to get server access to internet.

Old School bro, only help I can give u on this. In trouble shooting modems I would first reset PC, and hit the F8 key on startup, and see if there is a "last known good bootup file/configuration file, before the install of NIC.

Upon good boot, if that did not help, modem still giving issues, I would start Windows in "Safe Mode" and remove modem drivers, afterwards even remove the modem, then reboot. Then turn off computer and install modem again, well seeded. Why? Windows ME/98 was a weird animal, if you remove drivers in Safe Mode, and the modem, then install the modem again, windows Me will think it's new installation, and you can re install the drivers. Modems go bad phisically, even if they look like their working. You may have to re install newer driver versions for modem, and get them off another PC on internet. If I had another modem around with drivers, I would try another modem.

Sorry bro no easy answer, I trouble shot pc's for years, but always in a tech shop with extra parts, and other pc's around me with internet access, cause this can be frustrating without some resources around you.

This type of problem can drive you crazy, cause you don't know if it's a new phisical modem problem, or software corruption.

Good Luck

Just curious about you bro.. You sound sophisticated and well into your profession. Good for you Jonazen . We are about the same age, and from talking to you, we have done different things, but I feel, from looking at your website once, I use to be so involved in PC world. But gave it up as a profession 5 years ago, so I can see your still heavy into it. Im still into computers, but only for myself. When friends and neighbors, who new me as a computer guy, call me for help, I referr them to good friend who owns a pc shop around town, cause like I3onk, when you open up someone's system, your asking for trouble, and u may open up a can of worms. I have seen it all in the computer repair world, I started my career in California reparing computers, and even studied electronics in a time when a board would cost 1600 and it was cheaper to fix then to replace. But today, like I3onk's issue, with 56K modems costing 20 bucks, it's easier to dump a modem and replace it then to spend time troubleshooting it.

Like you I use to own a company way back called PCTech Consultants, and had a division called Techweb200 a hosting service. I was a complete pkg deal to clients, Lan installations, new computers, hosting, repair, you name it, I did it on site, and got retainers for doing it too. Another life. So good for you man, your a computer guy. I used to like that, someone saying, "are you the computer guy", yes I am. Good marketing. Now I use technology to the tilt, but only for me, and my mortgage busines.

Actually using MSN dial up account. its just really weird man. The dial up works. Get connected at 46666 and getting data sent and recieved but the IE wont go online. I know my way around a PC pretty darn good. I would like to concider myself almost an expert. (Expert being someone who has made EvERY mistake and learned to fix it) but I havent hit every mistake yet, LOL.

I told my GF the same thing. That ME sux big time. he has a presario. P3, 700Mhz. he NOW has 256M of RAM(was 64M) until I hooked him up. Told her XP may be a bit slugish on his PC and that I could hook him up with 98SE with no worries. The modem is actually a card, and he has a NIC card as well. I figure I can get rid of both cards and just put in the wireless card. I walked a few houses down from him with the MDA out checking WIFI signals and pulled up 3 and connected to all of them. Im sure with a good DLINK like I gave him he will have no problems doing the same.

I just feel bad, feel like I let them all(mom, dad, brother, and GF) down. I calim that PC's are "MY" thing, and I "F" it all up.

I am going to talk to him and let him know, that if he gives me his PC for less than a week(prob 2 days tops) I will have him up and running with 98SE, wireless, and I thing I have a 40G HDD to hook him up with to accompany his 20G that came with his PC.

I just wish I could have done it all today. Spent way too long on the IE issue.

Thanx for the input MadDog, you just confirmed what I was thinking anyways. winME "OUT" 98SE "IN"

I would first go to tools in internet explorer and make sure the settings are correct, might need to reconfig the connections settings - it weird that it lost the settings from upgrading the ram, also make sure the ram is compatible with the motherboard... if not go to control panel and use the connections wizard to set up the browser and reboot it should work... internet explorer sucks I've alwaysed used netscape ( never have a problem ).... all windows the same it just that windows me is a baby and xp is the daddy

Got to agree 100% with MadDog. I've been working with PC's since BEFORE there were "PC's" -- Apple LISA, Apple II, Amiga, etc, and every version of DOS and Windows since the very first PC hit the market.

Windows ME is a disaster. MS tried to put a prettier face on Win98, and tried to make it "smarter", but they created an unstable monstrosity. The only thing good about ME is that you can reformat the harddrive and install something else instead. It's slow, buggy, erratic and incredibly prone to error.

Microsoft hasn't support ME in years. Third-party companies do not publish drivers for ME anymore.

It REALLY urge you to do your best to talk them into moving to XP if at all possible. It's also not perfect, but it's SO much more stable and better supported -- you'll avoid a LOT of heartache.

EDIT: btw: you're NOT letting anyone down with this. It's not reasonable to expect ANYONE to fix something that was broken the day it was put on the market. Friends don't let friends use Windows ME.

Been in my own business for about 14 years, after stints working in banks, manufacturing companies (in IT and management) and three consulting firms (IT and management consulting). In my own business, it's been everything from software development through management consulting for some Fortune 100 clients (e.g., IT strategic planning for the CIO, enterprise architecture, organization evaluation, etc). Neat stuff - never boring.

A lot of the software work that we used to do frequently has started to be outsourced, so that part of the business became far less profitable. The effort to sell management consulting work is also a challenge because I'm competing head-to-head with billion dollar consulting firms like McKinsey and KPMG -- and as good as I might be, they have far deeper resources to throw at large complex projects. So I'm very close, now, to considering setting my own business aside (or having a relative and/or colleague take it over), and taking a senior role with another company. If I do this, it will just be hard after so many years on my own to think about being somebody's "employee"....has to be a compelling offer...

LOL Jon...I'm starting to wonder how many of us MDA geeks were developers in a former/current life. I think that has something to do with how patient we are with these phones and how we don't freak out when we have to do a hard reset.

Must be a large part of it...

Wrestling with this feels an awful lot like so many projects I had in the past...

Knowing a little bit more and more bout you I can tell were you, me, and Jonazen, and possibly others here, but you two guys I have gotten to know more, were from the same mold.

I have come to the conclusion in my life bro, that technology either works or it doesn't. But often wonder how "Normal" people get by. I hve and old GE alarm clock with two snoozes controls for over 28 years. Amazing! Only piece of tech around me that still works. Just the other day I bought a thermostat to change my older one, this new one was so incredibly complicated to program, I lot patience & returned it.

Even gadgets like the MDA, most normal people just don't do what we do. And for the most part a lot just look and admire the crazy ness.

Like you I have been into pc's for ever, I never bought a PC before, with the exception of my first Apple IIE and IIC. I have built my own systems and have had the best luck with them. yet I am always doing some maintainance. Maybe I am just too compliated, but it's the nature of the beast. . My son-in-law today just said to someone, my father-in-law i can see him one day with some sophisticated hearing ade, one he can hack.

I now the feeling cause it's close to family. I got much younger friends who call me often just to get advice before buying a PC online, I don't mind that, cuase it keeps me up to date sometimes. But to get under the hood of a PC these days, not worth it for me. Cause your absolutely right, if you can't give me a week, and let me take my time, brother, father, or mother, and let me do what I want, cause I know once I get into it, It's either my way, or the highway, but I know it will work, and work well. I have had people tell me I fixed their computer once, and it ran for years before they bought another.

I see so many people buying computers from Compaq, HP, from Walmart, or Circuit City, etc., Sorry folks, no disrespect mented, but they are consumable products. If they last two years your good, if your lucky and it last more than that, good for you , if it last one year, sorry .

The best way to buy a table top computer, is from a reliable, notice I said reliable, local shop who will build you a custom system based on your budet, with no whissles, logoson bootup, and recovery partitioned drives, etc. The funny thing is, most people think it will cost more if you buy from some local guy, but that's a myth. Once you do, you will never buy from a store again. Cause even if they guy is out of business 3 years later, any tech would appreciate working on that system.

Even the best gaming computers in the world, are put together by enthusiasts. I use to have chart in my office with 7 companies showing off their computer gaming pc's, between 3-5 thousand dollars. Rated at the top of the list were companies like Alien Ware, and others cutom builders, at the bottom of the scale, were Gateway, Dell, and others popular makers. Yet we would kill to have even one of those at the bottom of the scale .

I know your feelings.. Computers are weird man, even if you move an older system from it's dusty fixed location, it may decide not to boot anymore. And when you are in someones house, trying to do the right thing by them, you feel guilty, and spend hours on a system you and I would probably throw in the garbage. I use to have a room full of frickin computers, convincing customers to let me build them a new one, collecting dust through the years, but no more. I always said, want to know what computer makers to keep away from, go visit a local computer shop, and ask they guy, he will show you his collection, HP at the top of the heep.

I must be in a story state of mind today, writing this long...

I hve tried working for others with no luck . When I got out of computers and into the mortgage business 5 years ago, I got licensed and immediately applied to brokerage companies. The first company I worked for was a guy in the industry for 10 years, I literaliy set him up not just with a network, a website, ssl security for online applications, but completely made his company look like a bonified millions dollar business. In the end he was stealing money from my deals. But my attitude was, that was the cost of learning. Every company I have worked for will take me for granted, once they find out, I am not just an extremely reliable guy, but tecno, and personable. The truth is I was never happier then when the State of florida licensed me as a business.

Every industry is competitive, true, but the busiess bug bit me when I was very young, I use to shine shoes in Battery park to make money, i was probably one of the first few to dry cars in car washes back in 60's. I am a great corporate kiss ***, if I want to be, and very diplomatic, so muving up the corp latter hs never been my problem, dealing with ash's who are in charge of me, that's another story. Having owners of companies take advantage of my skills and management with little respect, no no..

I know life is hard to figure, and small business is not easy, but worth it in the end. I had a good friend who worked for Oracle. They leased him to San Francisco to work for Sun Microsystems managing a team to update Oracle which Sun uses, or did anyway. I was a small computer consultant at time, not from this guys mold, of education and big company background, road or hard knocks kind of guy, but he admired that I was on my own.

Oracle had set this guy up with home and minivan, and some expenses in Silicon Valley, that's how we met and became life friends. Yet Oracle paid him peanuts next to what they were charging Sun Microsystems. I once told him, why does he not take his shots, and approach Sun and offer his services for less then Oracle, but as an independant consultant. Long story short, he did and it worked. Sun hired him for several years paying him a small fortune next to wht Oracle charged them, he will never stop thanking me for lifting his spirit up. Today, many years later, he is doctor of some sort of ut of the pharmacy medicine, natural stuff. I will never forget his letter to me, when he told me he had had finally giving up on the computer industry.

So I take my hat off to you Jonazen, cause computer industry is a mystery to most, hard to crack, especially in those big arenas, and hard on your mind. Just keeping up with technology at your level can drive a man to drink .

as hed of a team to build their database.

Not a bad idea if one wants to revert bck to out of box and simply run a better calendar and still get more RAM.. Not likely dough, cause Spb Diary is so cool and has so many options and runs faster.

Case in question on site. Calendar+ performs very slowly on my Windows Mobile 5 device. Is this known?

Yes. Calendar+ uses Microsoft's recommended interface to communicate with your calendar information. This interface appears to be many times slower on Windows Mobile 5 than it is for Windows Mobile 2003. We will have a fix for this as soon as possible.

I've actually found the technology gets easier to keep up with -- because you see more and more of the similarities across the board, even if the programming languages and operating systems change. The underlying work is all essentially the same. The only really big conceptual changes that took some brain stretching over the years were things like:
1) flat files to various "file access methods"
2) fancy flat file storage to databases
3) various types of databases, such as network, relational and hybrid
4) artificial intelligence and neural networks
5) object oriented languages, modeling and databases
6) internet technologies

Almost everything else is just variations on these...combined with applied "common sense" (which is increasingly uncommon these days!).

Is there a memory leak in SPB Weather???

The ONLY other change I've made in this device in the last couple of days was the settings for ContactBreeze (static and default = "full").

Worrisome! Prior to yesterday, there was a slow leak, but I'd still have 14mb or more after 12 hours of use.

New day, new experiences. Seems that WM5 does some odd things on its own from time to time -- probably just to keep us on our toes.

I have made NO changes to my phone in a couple of days, so imagine my surprise when I booted it up this morning and saw the error message pop up indicating that it could not execute "pzptoday" (that's the program that starts up the PocketZenPhone today plugin). Huh? I thought it was a fluke, so I did a couple more soft resets, and it happened every time.

I did some searching, and found that all the files are in the right place. Then I looked at the Today screen settings (since PZPToday IS a plugin). I rearranged them a couple of times -- but that should only affect that visual ordering on the screen. Then I rebooted -- and it flew through with no error message.

Go figure!

Just for kicks, I checked available memory -- 20.07MB. Gets more interesting -- last time I did this, I started out with about 19.5MB, and it dropped to 13.5MB in just about an hour. My MDA has been on now, since the last restart, for about 2 hours -- and I'm still showing 20.06MB.

Not complaining! Just wish I knew why it seems to change from boot to boot. Almost as if this is a crude multi-tasking operating system, various processes are seeming to start up at their own pace -- which can vary depending on a variety of factors, and when the sequence is right it works, and when the sequence is NOT right, things blow up.

I don't think the world is ready for "Windows for Pacemakers" just yet...

I have always told everyoen I know. DO NOT BUY a PC, build it. Thats where I get alot of my side money. They dont know how. They tell me what they want, I find them the parts for the best prices I can find, and charge for my services.
I actually started teching my 15 year old daughter how to build and troubleshoot PC's about 4 years ago. Her first job is in an electronics store. She worked behind the sales sounter for 4 months, then got promoted to the back as a PC tech. (Makes a father Proud) I think I put her on a good road to a lucrative carrer, doing something the can enjoy and have fun with.
As far as my GF's brothers PC. After looking at the requirements to run XP Pro, I decided to try putting XP on it. He is running a little more than double what the requirements are. I think he should be OK. Granted hes not going to have a super machine, but he doesnt really need it for trollling the web, and doing homework.

If it cant handle it, I have a good legal copy of 98SE I can hook him up with. After talking to a few of my gaming buddies, I realise what I should have done to possibly repair the problem. Havnt worked with dial up for so long, I cant believe that I didnt think of it though. Anyways, he wasnt angry with me, and her parents werent either. That makes me feel alot better.

Not sure about Spb Weather leaks. I would have to remove it for a couple days, or restore without it. I am having some weird stuff happen too. My today screen changed on it's own today. Stuff re arranged on it's own. I have same issues with RAM. I have not gotten mine over 20MB at all, so your ahead. I boot up to just over 17MB, and have to use SKRam Up immediately after soft reset to get just under 20MB, about 19 something. Weird! My Ram also goes down drastically to 12 or so during day, sometimes for no reason. Weird! My backlight keeps defaulting back to 10Sec for no reason, weird!

Also have had some lock ups lately. Just like you, not complaining, just weird stuff. Enouph to possibly cold boot and reload everything in different order, or just keep some things off for a while to see if it's not Spb Diary, Spb plus, weater, what ever. But I have come such a long way with modifying the MDA, that it hurts to think about doing it all over again. An I am really happy with the look and feel, just a hassle with some of the issues.

OK - more data, still no pattern:

It's now 11:45pm. Phone been on for a while. Several calls this afternoon and evening. Lots of bluetooth usage. Some web browsing over GPRS. A couple of weather reports fetched. A few dozen text msgs back and forth (my son is visiting and friend and missed us...). Anyway - battery is at 90% (no typo!). Main memory down to 12.80MB, but that's not bad because I'm turning in for the night, and will reset it in the morning...

Man talking about computers and issues. I just had a crash on my normal system. I had just put this together xp and all recently. But IE crashed on me, and Outlook won't work. Now XP Pro just resets itself. Im running repair on it, but it's taking for ever. I removed a newer drive to use as a backup on other LAN pc cause it was the biggest I had, and installed a used 30G smaller drive a couple months ago. Bummer. :-). Got to stop by any local store and pickup a new HD, and reload all again today. Not exacly something too look forward too on Sunday.

Here's what I was talking about earlier, not sure how "normal" people deal with this.

Oh well..

The answer is very clear NO! But here's the detail.

You have the POWER to get on Wi-Fi without TMO's Hotspots. The key is, finding a FREE BEE wi-fi. Now I use something that helps me a lot, I have reffered it to others here, as I3onk can testify to it's worth while buying. That's Wi-Fi Companion http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=20127

The 30 pkg from TMO gives you access to HotSpots using Wi-Fi, case in question, Kinkos/FedEX places, Starbucks, too many to mention, google TMO Hotspots. But for me I don't pay! For others who need Wi-Fi on the road all the time, they pay, like Jonazen, and I believe I3onk pays too, they uses his wi-fi more than I do, and also use Edge/GPRS also. Mind you Edge is slower than Wi-Fi, so if ur at a Starbucks Wi-Fi takes place over Edge. But if your in a remote area with no Wi-Fi Hotspot at all, Edge can be a blessing.

I get away with using Free Bee Wi-Fi at libraries, my favorite breakfast place, many Free Bee wi-fi, even the Oralando Airport has Free Wi-Fi access. What does Free Wi-Fi mean? It means no Encryption Key required. You will find many routers and wi-fi around town, even in neighborhoods, but many are Encrypted, like mine. But many are also not. Wireless is a free radio frequency, no one can stop u from using it. Just like am/fm radio. But companies like TMO, who are a business, will charge you to use their routers at locations where they know you hang around. They use broadband, just like your using, with a router and some configuration to keep you out, unless you pay. If I go to Kinkos, for example, I immediately get access to TMO's wireless on MDA, but soon as I click on my browser, I get a nice little welcome msg from TMO, something to the fact that I am not a registered user, but can nicley charge it to my crdit card right there and then. Also keep in mind TMO offers FREE BEE Wi-Fi at Hotspots some weekends on promotional deal. After Frinday Midnight, you get same msg but this time they send you a free key to get on, on Sun even 12M the free bee ends.

The wi-fi built into your MDA is not designed by TMO. It is a technology available on many devices, like laptops, computers, ppc's and others. Anyone with built in wireless can get on TMO's Hotspots, if they have a key, or pin, or what ever they call it. The built in Wireless utility with the MDA is mediocre, not as good as wi-fi companion when it comes to graphically making sense of what I just said.

I use AIM often for FREE! I don't use the IM that came with the MDA, that is not for FREE. It uses your cellular to allow you to send txt msgs, and you get charged. Anytime you send a txt msg to another person, no matter what TMO charges you. So if I go to my contacts, it has a nice TMO feature to send a txt msg to any person, I can choose to, or not, but get charged a minimal fee if I do.

I use AIM 2.0 to get on line and chat, or send msgs via AIM 2.0 which is the Internet version that uses my MDA Wi-Fi broadband from my home office,or from any Free Bee Wi-Fi. I have a wireless router so can get my wi-fi FREE anytime from any location in my home that gives me a good signal. I sometimes get my neighbors FREE BEE wi-fi, in some areas of my home that my wirelss does not reach clearly, and can get on internet for a while using my good neighbor router, but I respect that and don't abuse it, but he has no Idea I am on Net over his wirelss router. How is that possible? He does not use 128 bit encryption to keep others off his router.

You can get AIM 2.0 on google, but I have made it easy for board friends at my ftp site. http://www.jcvlending.com/maddogx007/index.html

Good luck.

LOL..that's the truth! I am sitting here typing this on a Dell 400sc (server-class) computer I bought through a deal on gotapex.com several years ago..long story short..someone figured out this computer which Dell was selling for roughly $400 had the same logic-board as the $2,500 XPS..althought the AGP slot, etc. were not "officially" supported by Dell. Long story short, I ended up with a 3.2Ghz HT computer with 160GB HD & 1GB RAM, DVD burner, CD burner & Dolby card for less than $400!

Of course I had to do EVERYTHING from digging up the drivers to support networking & AGP slot to cutting a hole in the front of my case to give me access to the 2 USB 2.0 slots there to buying a copy of XP to install (it came without an OS)...it was SOOO worth it and we had a blast setting them up.

Because there were so many people jumping on this deal, there was a forum (just like HOFO ) bursting with tips & tricks. AFter a month of tinkering, this thing has been a rock solid performer..and nearly 3 years later its still among the best PCs on the market.

Here's aaltonen's site:

http://aaltonen.us/archive/2003/07/...oweredge-400sc/

Haven't been there in awhile but seems its still going strong!

I ask people the same question all the time. I've got 26 years experience with pc's, know the innards, architecture, etc and I find it frustrating. How can the "average" consumer deal with this? I have friends who are non-techies, and I'm amazed at what they have to deal with when they want to install drivers, fix problems with Office, use WiFi, etc. -- for the most part, they really are flying blind.

Hey Jon,

What is your opinion on the fact the JUNI skin doesn't support the E and G icons. Does that bother you or do you know if he's planning to update them? I'm just trying to figure out which way I want to go on 'skinning' my PPC.

Actually it does, its just not an e or g. I don't have my skin installed right now, but I think it was the icon all the way to the left. I'm going to do some testing today with wisbar again, so I will verify it and let you know in just a few minutes.

Ok I checked it out, its the connection icon that replaces the E/G icon. It shows activesync activity and the gprs/edge activity with two moving arrows.

Thats just an issue with the version of wifi companion that they have on the website. Here is the good version that will work just fine for you.

I had the same issue until maddog gave me this version. Now I use it regularly, have it registered and love it.

There is so much truth to this. I know I had said I have always built my own pc's, that is true, but several years ago, a guy approached me with two PC's, flat monitors, the works, he needed cash. The excuse he gave me was, his mom's business had gone under and they simply wanted to recup some cash back. Who was I to say he was a lier. These two pc's were Dell. I paid the guy 490 for them, and gave him initially 300 bucks. I told him go back and get me the drivers for thse pc's and I will give him the balance. Well long stry short, he did. The pc's in the market were worth about 1800 for one, and 2200 for the other. To tell you the truth, I became a serious Dell believer, cause there still with me, and quiete as a mouse. I sometimes forget these pcs are running their so quite. But a few tweaks and another few upgrades, and boom, very decent pc's. Can't say same for the laptop I really paid 3000 5 years ago, it lasted me less then 2 years and broke down.

Who needs a secretary when we got, good job Bro

I discovered a couple of other nice things about Pocket Plus. I created a tab for Spb Weather, which is cool, cause it removed Spb Weather from today, and put a cute little weather icon on a tab, giving me more space. So now I have 4 tabs, home, system, games, and weather, but only use the icons to represent, since I know what's in those tabs. Also there is a feature in Spb Diary to make scrawl space a little smaller or bigger, like PB. Nice

You just got to spend sometime digging this stuff up, cause Spb is awesome!

Darn i ws going to install right away, but realized WM5 has some issue un installing, maybe it will not be able to un install the older version cleanly, that means anothe backup restore, geting complicated.

Try this man. Make sure there are no references to SBP Pocket plus running. Turn off all of the options on it. ie....ok/close button, battery meter and remove it from your today screen. Then try uninstalling it. That seasm to be the only time i have issues uninstalling something. Then reinstall.

O.K. don't make me go there bro. I got a friend with a Treo, a good friend, but witht the Treo 650. I got on a board once, and it got me in trouble when I spoke my mind, but this is an MDA thread so bohoo for those of you Treo lovers.

Hey truth is the Treo is a really nice phone!! But I said it once, and Ill risk it again, it's not for a serious PPC user. Here is the logic, rational, etc.

The Treo 700 does not offer built in Wi-Fi? That in itself is not worth looking at. Why? It means after you spend as much as the MDA for it, you will have to spend another 100 bucks or so to get the SD Wi-Fi card. Furthermore, you will have to sacrafice the slot for the drn wi-fi?? Not good bro.

The Treo700 comes with standard 32MB of Ram? I m experiencing 19MB left or less sometimes on a device that has 64MB RAM? I have witnesses here on this thread.

If I were... I wanted to sing the fidler on the roof for a moment there, sorry. If I were a rich man, lalalalalalalalal If I were to buy a Treo style phone, i would rather get the HP 6515. Why? The phone has both a mini-sd and a SDIO slot, so you still can use one for storage sametime, and it comes with 64MB RAM! Now some guys out there say this crap, they have GPRS/Edge anyway, so the absence of Wi-Fi is not a big deal.. Yeah... Really!! Like going out to dinner with one shoe! If had the data pkg with GPRS/Edge, you bet I'd rather be on Wi-Fi if possible

But if I were, here we go again, a rich man, lalalalalal.. Sorry, I would buy the newest HP treo style that comes with all the whissles and look of a Treo, but mo money, mo money.

I almost got stuck with a Treo 700 believe it or not! I was coming out of my original TMO pocket pc with 32MB Ram and no Wi-Fi, no BT. The sales guy at Verizon actually told me the Treo 700 had 128MB RAM. I jumped at the idea of 128MB RAM!! And it had Wi-Fi and BT to boot!! Whohoooo, I was ready, willing, and able to jump the wagon from TMO to Verizon, and get a contract, which I have not had for 4 years with TMO for that 700 puppy. BUT the better side of my techno brain said, put on the breaks dummy, and go google this baby first!, remember I3onk google it first, (post joke ) Then the truth hit me. The sales guy had no idea about the facts of the phone, even the screen is too small for some applications designed for a ppc.

Don't get me wrong bro, reviews on the phone are excellent, cause it's a smartphone first, and a ppc 2nd. The MDA is a PPC first with Smarphone features 2nd. Although that can seem confusing, cause it's really a smartphone/ppc. Better deal for me, the MDA won heads up

Ok I checked it out, its the connection icon that replaces the E/G icon. It shows activesync activity and the gprs/edge activity with two moving arrows.

I see that..but in the normal view I can see an "e" with the little arrows or a "g" with the little arrows or an "antenna icon" with the little arrow so I know at a glance if i'm on G, E or WIFI. In addition, when OFF, I see a square with a big E or a big G.

Well Im installing the XP pro and supporting software on my PC, after installing a new drive from Circuit City. Man drives are getting cheap, 400GB for less then 300 bucks? 120 GB for less then80 bucks? Great!

It's nice to have pc's on a D-link switch troops. I am going back and forth to this forum, while loading software on another pc on switch 4. U got to love pc switches using only one KB and one track mouse.

Bought it last week and am having some issues with it. Please help if you can.

Any way to transfer my ACT! contact to my phone? Does ACT! make a compatible mobile software that works with the MDA?

How (or can I) access T-zones from this thing.

About WI-FI: I have tried some settings and I'm not getting a reliable connection. Sometimes I'll click on a website a message pops up that says "cannot connect" and then it will connect after I hit "dismiss"? What should I have in the connections settings? so it will pick up WI-Fi (Not Tmob hotspots)

What will the 2.17 ROM update do for me and where do I get it?

What softare should I absolutely put on this thing to optimize it's capabilities?

Thanks for any help

One questions at a time bro.

1st. Yes Act can work with MDA, but you will have to buy the PPC version act which syncronizes with PPC and table top ACT. I use to use it, frankly still got older version, loved it, have not messed with it since my first PPC, don't know why. But if I wanted to I would have to upgrade the ppc act version to WM5. Google it bro, got to be there somewhere, popular contact management software.

2nd. T-zones is not my specialty, maybe I3onk can share some light on this. I think it has to be setup by TMO with passwords, email etc..

3rd. look a few posts up from you bro, I just gave some guy complete answers to your wi-fi non hotspot questions, just today. There is no much to have in your connections. The question is, wht r u trying to connect to. Obviously not a hotspot, but wht? Your wireless router at work, home? A library with Free wireless? The MDA is basically setup so that once it sees a wifi it connects you automatically since it does not require a encryption. Again, the best software for this is Wi-Fi companion. But the one available on the net as try before u buy is a bit older for WM5. Above next to that post I gave that other guy, you will see I3onk's link to the new Wifi companion, check it out, its the best in town for connectivity with wi-fi. Mda comes with basic utility, hard to read, especially if ur new to this.

4th. The 2.17 is the newest ROM upgrade to the OEM Version currently on your MDA. But it's not from TMO. I hope ur clear on this. Cause if you need tech support and tell them that u upgraded to the 2.17, your out of luck. Also if your under warrantee and need to send back ur phone, ur out of luck. TMO has not released their official ROM UPgrade yet, and no time schedule. What will it do for you, it makes MDA run smoother, but it's a custom TMO Rom upgrade. Again, hate to send you hunting, but this topic was covered in serious detail a few weeks ago, if not longer, when I3onk, Jonazen, and myself upgraded. Serious research here for you bro, but worth the time.
To get it go to my ftp site: http://www.jcvlending.com/maddogx007/index.html. There u will also find the newest version of Wi-Fi companion. But I highly suggest your consult with myself, I3onk, or Jonazen, before you embard in the prcess, it could help you a lot.

5th. Software? Look at my ftp site, it will give u a great idea.

Good luck

Your other SBP software will still be installed. If you have them linked with pocket plus, then once you install pocket plus again, then they should kick right back into spot, providing there isnt any other settings needed to add them.

Wow -- I step away from my pc for a few hours and 2 or 3 pages of posts go by! This could be a full time job!

As far as I've seen, juni's skins don't show all those states. Essentially disconnected or connected (to GPRS/EDGE) - that's it. I have no idea if the skins will be updated, or when. May be a limitation in Wisbar, but I haven't looked too closely at that.

I DO like seeing as much info as possible onscreen, and it's disappointing when some of it is masked. But the E/G icons don't make a lot of difference to me, since I'll connect when I need to, whether or not I have a full EDGE connection. It's interesting to see the "E" as I travel around, if only to see how quickly T-Mobile is rolling out full EDGE coverage, but it's not critical, and I'm finding that I really don't miss having the "E" at this point.

I've been more concerned with functionality lately, along with battery life and memory leaks. Trying to find the most stable configuration that's easiest to use. I like Juni's skins -- so far they seem to be the most complete and sophisticated that I've seen, but I know there are more that I haven't looked at too closely yet. I want to check out the Vista Lite skin -- don't know if there are corresponding images to go with PocketBreeze and iLauncher...would be nice to have everything go together.

Need to explore some more!

Thats why we are here man. To help the rookies and even the vets.

Speaking of helping a vet. I just went back to 2.17. I know I cant seam to make up my mind, LOL. You guys seam to be doing better with memory than I am. When I use WA2 I end up down to between 17 and 18M.

The question I have is, I remember seeing something, somewhere that let you remove the battery icon from the startmenu bar that 2.17 adds. I cant remember for the life of me where I found it. Anyone else remember coming across this?

Ok folks, this is an easy app to help you to convert a DVD into an AVI. Cant watch DVD's on your MDA with TCPMP. Will take some messing with the settings to get it to look as good as you want it to, but it is really easy to work with.

I thought about that too, but it's not really hidden, if you keep that tab open, after using other tabs, just got to remember. Also once in weather tab, you can hold the stylus down next to Spb pocket plus setup icon to refresh weather. Also remember, if you have, like I do, and love it, Spb Diary, everyday the weather pops up on calender for today, again, as long as you leave Diary in calender mode. So lots of options to see the weather.

Great! Im impressed that ur impressed. Never met u, but respect u. I'll be in Jersey one day soon dough, have family, maybe we can't meet at some local place, I promise Im not weird, and have lunch one day.

Im sitting here with a BT Headset in my left ear, and BT headset in my Right ear I must look like some alien fool. Although I feel like a tribe man with two big earings . The reason: The left ear answers calls for MDA, the right ear answers calls on VoIP on PC.

I had to buy another set after returning the HT820 Stereo Headset. I picked up the Jabra BT150 (better design around hear and works nice with MSVC too). I know use the Motorola H500 with VoIP, and Jabra with MDA. But still got a delema. I get PC sound, includes music, on my right ear with H500, which is bad mono, and don't like to use it for music, but the HT820 got me fabulous music, but mic did nt work with VoIP on PC? . I just can't seem to win at this.

In a perfect world, i want to just use the HT820 to get music on PC, and VoIP, and interruptions from MDA. I know the HT820 worked great cause I tested it to death with music on PC and incoming calls on MDA, but why the mic won't allow me to talk over VoIP is beyond me. I did get dial tone, but no body could hear my voice after dialing. I got 15 days to figure this out, if Im to return the Jabra, but don't have the HT820 anymore, cause that is the way to go, only one set.

Hi Mad Dog,

I also bookmarked your site, seems cool. My doubt is very basic, probably answered before, but as somebody mentioned too much information here can get confusing.

I just didn't figure out which of the softs do SIM-UNLOCK on the T-Mobile MDA (the eWizard seems to do the CID unlock). SIM-UNLOCK is the most important thing to me as I don't live in the US, but go often, so I am considering buying a T-Mobile with plan, but need to use the phone back home with my country's SIM card (also go to Europe, etc.).

I appreciate your help. Sorry to bother. Thanks.

Appreciate it. Let me understand. Cause I only used the RUU. I simply unlocked with that and continued to upgrade to 2.17. Another guy that would be helpful, and has been extremely helpful to me is I3onk, so lets see if we can't get him to agree or offer input here.

Steps.

1 - aWizard, the older version NOT the Beta can be used to unlock the phone, and I believe bckup your old OEM. I3onk is that true? But I3onk who took the aWizard route before RUU and backed up old OEM, had an issue when reverting back to old OEM, which makes me wonder what will happen if I need to to that.

2. When u say your considering buying a TMO with Plan. I wonder wht u have know? I will assume you have the MDA, but some Europe version? Do you have a TMO Europe plan?

Here is my deal with SIMM cards. I unlocked the MDA. I tried using a SIMM card from a friend who has Sprint, same network. I got a msg on the screen. I figured I needed to call Sprint to tell them, that I am now using Sprint. I don't have a heck of a lot experience on changing SIMMS, but would assume that if you already have TMO in Europe, why could you not use a TMO account in USA.

I3onk, or Jonazen what do u thing?

Update: When you refresh you will not get the little sun turning, cause it's on the tab now, but the weather does refresh inr 15 seconds or so, u will see weather change in front of u, so it works, although the little turning sun is not there. Just another option on Today bro.

I don't think anybody with 2.17 is doing any better with memory, just juggling things around and for me, using SKRam Up to get more, but that's about right, maybe 19.5 down to 12, big jumps or big leaks.

Re: memory (and as many here know, I'm using 2.17), I left my MDA on all night and did NOT reset today. Even refreshed the weather forecast a few times, made a bunch of calls, sent a bunch of SMS's, check some email...as of 4:00pm this afternoon, memory was holding about about 15.7MB (not bad after more than 24hours, and the battery was holding out beautifully too. So...I just had to run out for about 2 hours of errands -- and I turned on bluetooth. Just checked again and I'm down to 12.9MB of free memory.

This is the 2nd or 3rd time I've noticed this in a few days. I'm really starting to think that the bluetooth implementation may be one of the leakers in this setup...it's a shame, though - just before I went out, I was ready to come back here and post about the great battery life and memory experience I was having over the past 24 hours...

1 - aWizard, the older version NOT the Beta can be used to unlock the phone, and I believe bckup your old OEM. I3onk is that true?

I3onk, or Jonazen what do u thing?

yes I used aWizard to back up all my roms before flashing to 2.17. I was able to revert back to the OEM OS and RADIO ROMS. The only problem i had was going back tot he OEM EXT ROM. I have all of the OEM EXT ROM cab files. The EXT ROM is actually those cabs that install after you hard reset and go through the paces and get past the password screen. When it says tap screen to start using, then you tap, then it starts installing things. These are the cabs in the EXT ROM. aWizard does not have an option to SIM unlock, only CID Unlock. I know there are a few of SIM unlockers out there though. I have no need to SIM unlock right now so I havent done any research on it. Check the XDA forums:

i3onk posted as much as I know about SIM unlocking -- Lokiwiz seems to be the way to go. Info at xda-developers.com.

Re: T-Mobile Europe and USA -- they're run separately, and accounts don't automatically travel from one to the other as far as I know. A TMo europe account would be doing international roaming over here, and a US TMo account would be doing international roaming over there.

I'm confused about Sprint and SIMs though -- doesn't compute! Sprint doesn't have a GSM service, does it???

One thing I was after was the Eten dialer (thanks, I got it), but noticed the file seemed strange for the additional color skins (when I downloaded it, it was an .exe, which I didn't expect). When I ran it, it turned out it was the ActiveSync install version of Macromedia Flash Player (which was fine for me--I needed it anyhow!).

Just wanted to let you know so you can fix the link. I went back and checked the MFP links to see if the color skin link was there, but they were correct as is.

MadDog,

I think I was a bit confusing. I live in Brazil. As I go often to the US and Europe, I need a SIM-Unlocked phone, so it accepts GSM SIM cards anywhere.

I did more research on forum.xda-developers.com and I think I've got the steps. There we can find a free software that does the trick. It is called "lokiwiz" and if done with care seems to be pretty good. Only restriction is to have an older ROM (not the 2.17). This soft also does the CID-Unlock so I can put the more updated/better Rom.

I only mentioned T-Mobile as I have a pre-paid phone from them, and it has a better price than buying an i-mate with no plan. But T-mobile will only sell it with one year or two year plan (not sure), which if cheap enough makes sense to me.

I hope this clarifies, and if I am saying any nonsense, please let me know.

Clarifies things for me...and it sounds like you're on the right track. Yes - newer ROMs are better protected against current SIM unlocking technology, so you'll want to use Lokiwiz with the original ROM (lower version) still installed when you SIM unlock the phone. You can also CID unlock it with the old version in place, or do this as part of the install of the 2.17 ROM if you use xelencin's custom installer (includes the CID unlocker as part of the process - just be sure to answer "yes" to the CID unlock question!).

Once your device is CID and SIM unlocked, you'll be able to load any ROM valid for the device, and also use SIM's from various carriers -- such as a US T-Mobile SIM, a pre-paid US T-Mobile SIM, etc.

Thanks for the files. I know 4.1 or 4.0 really stunk, hopefully they fixed some stuff. But I believe for us MDA users we have to install the version that came with box, to get the driver that sees mda, then upgrade to the 4.2. I believe.

I guess im not the brightest bulb on the tree, but when you reverted back, and got no ext roms, what were you left with? Just the OS, and Radio? No wonder you had such good memory left, not bad idea, wonder if u can just install what u want, instead of TMO stuff. But how did the MDA work after restore with no ext roms?

Again out of curiousity, and because I got your wonderful backup OEM Roms. Since I did not backup but use the RUU to unclock and upgrade. How did you restore? Did you use aWizard to restore? Or did it create and OEM RUU, included in that zip file u sent me for the OEM and Radio. If so, why did backup not include the EXT ROM on the RUU, like RUU for 2.17? The world needs to know this procedure bro, or I do

I have a question. This is a little off, but i'm thinking about getting a new bluetooth dongle because the one i have does not support the right profiles i dont think. If it does, then i'm not working it right. http://cgi.ebay.com/Bluetooth-Wirel...QcmdZ ViewItem
Thats the bluetooth dongle I have. Can anybody suggest a better one?? I think some of the bluetooth problems i'm having with my MDA come from this. Or if anyone can help me figure out how to make this one work better, please let me know. Thanks.

Actually that's quite interesting. O.K. now Im getting confused. CID Unlock was for changing GSM Networks, right? But I had an issue when I tried my son in laws cingular SIM card. I mean not issue, but it did not immediately get me on his Cingular account using his SIM Card. It prompt me for something I posted here a long time ago, if I can recall it. Now SIM unlock, is for what again??

CID unlock = you can change the OEM ROM to a ROM of your choosing
SIM unlock = you can use the phone on other carriers networks

Yes...what HE said.

...and just to expand for those who haven't wrestled with either of these issues yet:

When a device is CID locked by a vendor like T-Mobile (or Cingular, etc), you can only load another ROM if it is also properly tagged as having been provided by that same vendor. If you try, for example, to load a Cingular-branded ROM into your T-Mobile CID locked phone, you'll have trouble -- even though the underlying hardware may be identical.

CID unlocking removes that restriction, allowing you to install any vendor's ROM - as long as it's still designed to run on your particular hardware.

SIM locking is the way that vendors like T-Mobile, Cingular, etc restrict a phone that they provide to you so that it will only accept a SIM that is tied to their network. In short - if they sell you a subsidized phone, they want to be confident that you use their services with this phone, rather than popping in a SIM from another carrier. SIM unlocking removes this restriction, and lets you pop pretty much ANY SIM into your phone. Carriers like T-Mobile will generally send you instructions to SIM unlock your phone once you've been with them for 3 or more months, and it's also pretty common for them to help you SIM unlock the phone if you're about to travel overseas and need to be able to use local prepaid SIMS while travelling.

No, I still had EXT ROMS, they were just the 2.17 EXT ROMS.

I used aWizard to flash the backup ROMS. They are just .nba files. Its actually a pretty easy and painless thing to reflash your OEM ROMS. Just remember to do a hard reset before you do it. The backup actually made a folder with the EXT ROM sab files in it, a config file, and an exe. The config file listed all of the cab files in it. The exe only worked when placed on the device itself. When I went to click the app, it just reinstalled the files that weere already on the EXT ROM. It didnt install the ones in the folder. There was no install information for the EXT ROM files in the readme for aWizard. I have just been too lazy to post in the aWizard forum to find out how to do it. LOL!

Sounds like the phone was still SIM locked. You were probably prompted for a "subsidy code", so that the phone could be "allowed" to use the alien SIM it found inside itself...

OK here is something you guys may want to try, or not. This is a clock app that will put the clock back into the startmeny bar and get rid of the battery icon(So I have been informed) I havent tried it yet, but it might work. I will try it in a little bit.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=45084

Update: Well it works great, kills the battery icon in the startmenu bar and puts the time there. There is one problem though. Unfortunatly it is a today plugin. It also places a bar on the today screen displaying the time.

I need to learn how to write these plugins. Then I could remove the today portion and just have it replace the battery icon.

Posted by: i3onk

Well, I dont know if it was the switch back to 2.17 or having WISBAR run at startup a few times. I now have wisbar installed and at startup I still have between 20M and 19.7M of ram. Now If I could find a way to keep IM+ from eating up another half Meg or so when it starts up that would be great.

Posted by: i3onk

HAHA Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell Doggie. I have done it, YES!!! I knew it would just take some researching. I now know how to install the right files into my EXT ROM, using total commander. Looks like I will get the chance to try my own EXT ROM now

The only thing that sux, is I think now I will have to do another hard reset and start loading from scratch. LOL Thats OK, ill just do it to run a test on the EXT ROM and give you all my feedback, the just reflash 2.17 and then run my Final Backup I just made for 2.17 ROM. I also have a final backup for OEM ROM. So if for some reason I have to flash back, all I have to do is run that and BAM Im back up and running in NO time. WOW, wonder if I can get to the internal sounds like this, HMMMMM!!!!!!!!!

Thats what all the backup files, config and the autorunapp were for. You put them into the EXT ROM and then they run according to the config at first bootup, or when clicking on the autorun. I will have to check it after work tomorrow though. I need sleep right now. I have been deprived of it for a week now LOL. This test will probably take me just a couple hours to flash back to OEM OS, RADIO and EXT ROMS. Then the reflash back to 2.17 and my own EXT ROM should onlty take about an hour with restore. I should have a total review of this process by tomorrow night.

*Man I need to be happy with how I got this thing setup and just leave it alone.............NAAAAAAAAAAAH! What's the fun in that, LOL!

Wish me luck all and keep your fingers crossed. First thing I will get rid of is the useless midlette manager that came with 2.17.

NIghty Night!

Question.

I installed the SPB pocket plus app which I love but now when I try to customize the screen background I can't adjust the transparency of the picture. Any idea how to do that?

Also: How do I connect to T-zones? (can I?) My settings are: T-mobile GPRS, Cellular Line, wap.voicestream.com, 216.155.165.050

And finally...easiest way to upgrade to 802.11g?

Go to file explorer and find the pic you want to use, open it and then choose options and then set as today background. You will then see a window open for the transparency options.

np the hack for the 802.11g should be in the mda faq thread on the first page, either I or someone posted it up and it works well. just get yourself a registry editor and hack away. I use phm reg editor, google will help you with that

I actually posted a link a page or two ago for a DVD to AVI app. Works prett good. I have heard that DVD shrink works great, but I havnt used it yet. One thing you can use if you get a HUGE avi or mpg file and want to make it smaller is pocketdivx. I love this thing. lets you make so many changes to get the right size and quality combination.

ACtualyl you can DL dvd decryptor still. I thought the same thing at first. If you google dvd decryptor, the 2nd 3rd or 4th link down will give you a good DL. I got it about a week ago.

OK didnt even take a half hour to get them up and ready for DL. Damn I lvoe savefile.com (Thank you MadDog for the link.) Anyways, here are the 4 apps I have for this proccess. I have used 3 out of the four. 2 with success. one was a bit involved. The fourth I didnt realy get a chance to check out yet.

DVD Decryptor: This app seamed a little involved for me at the time i was trying it out. I was in a bit of a hurry, converting deathrace 2000 to put on my phone to transfer for a friend. Looks like a good app, I just didnt have the time to mess with it.

http://www.savefile.com/files/9018045

DVD 2 AVI: This is the app I ended up using for my Deathrace 2000 conversion. Seams like it took half the time as other encoders. The quality wasng great. There are alot of lines when there is alot of motion on the screen. I didnt take alot of time to mess with the settings, so Im sure I can do alot better with it.

http://www.savefile.com/projects.php?pid=873111

pocketdivx encoder: I use this quite frequently. I download alot of my movies from limewire in mpg form. This app allows me to edit the hell out of the file, cutting the size to abotu 1/3 fo the original size, while still keeping great audio and video quality.

http://www.savefile.com/files/9187299

DVD Shrink: I have heard great things about this App. I haven't tried it yet, but everyone I have talked to about it loves it for all of your DVD backup needs. Thsi is an AL in ONE app.

I have heard mixed reviews about wififofum. Most of them werent that great. I tried it once, and had some major issues getting it to work. I cant remember the issues right now, but it was not a pleasant experience. WIFI companion, is by far, the best app I have seen for this yet. I can click on any location that is not wep encrypted and have no problems connecting. I can even click on a few wep encrypted ones and still get connected. I love WIFI companion. Thanx to MadDog for the hookup on that one.

OK I am about to start my EXT ROM tests. Here is what I need from a "NON ROM FLASHED MDA USER"

When you boot up, you will see 4 versions listed on the top left corner.

IPL
SPL
GSM
OS

I need the version numbers you get when you boot up. I want to make sure when I do an OEM flash, I get the right numbers for everything. I want to be abel to verify that I can get everything back to OEM versions, in case the device needs to be returned, repaired, replaced, or flashed with the (eventually to be released) new TMO ROM.

Then I can write a detailed instruction on how people can flash back to OEM standards.

The sooner I get this info form the NON FLASHED USERS, the better.

Thanx guys/gals!!

Posted by: i3onk

OK I have the OEM EXT ROM files transfered to the EXT ROM. Im still waiting for those numbers guys/gals.

Update: GD it, I cant win. For some reason, I cant move the files over to the EXT ROM. Guess i need to do more research on this. Thought I had it figured out. Damn this pisses me off.

Give it time man, someone will post on this if they have the knowledge. MadDog is the only one of us that I think is using a BT dongle right now.

I've got a BT dongle...but it's the one that came with my Logitech keyboard/mouse combo (mx5000). But it was neat a few days ago - I had BT turned on at the MDA, and all of a sudden it announced that it had discovered my pc and wanted to know if I wanted to establish a partnership... I followed the prompts, and then the PC asked if I wanted to grant permission for the partnership, I entered the corresponding key, and the partnership was established.

I haven't tried send files back and forth yet or synching yet via BT...but I used to synch my old Sony Ericsson Z600 via BT all the time...

This is the Dongle I have..http://motorola.digitalriver.com/DR...ductID=38603100

I stick with Motorola BT products cause they seems to give me the best success all around, even with MDA. I just returned a Jabra BT150. I have used the Motorola Dongle with Motorola HT820 Stereo Headset successfully. And tried out VoIP on PC using Motorola H500 and Dongle successfully. although I had issues with BT connection and Vonage virual dialer VoIP, and just got another 2nd Vonage line instead and moved on. Too many frustrations with their dial tone, BT and soft VoIP on PC, not sure where to start with that one.

Installing the Motorola Dongle was not a complicated issue, it was very simple with well designed software. Nothing much to it bro. My experience has been with technology, if it does not work for you, makes you work too hard, pull your hair, screem at the dog, return it!

Interesting, cause I know understand why I could not get my son in laws Cingular account on my MDA. I had CID unlocked, but not SIMM unlocked. Thanks for clarifying that. I kind of new this, but guess my mind just was not focused when it should have been. Cause I am aware of the Simm unlock utility. Thanks

Sounds a little messy if your using WA2

Actually it wasnt bad at all. Obviously doesnt work with WA2, because the skin takes over the startmenu bar. Without WA2 worked great though. killed the battery icon . Only prob was it was a today plugin, so it also ate up some today space. Removing it from today also removed it from teh startmenu bar.

I am sad. My MemMaid trial just ended Man I just registered two apps this week. Dont want to pay for another. Looks like Im going to have to though :s

Go for it! Gor for it! Yes tell me the results~! I need to know. Your right the Midelette mgr is worthless.

Settings and then button assigments. Not all of the buttons are used. And you can assign exe's or anything to any of the buttons that you want, and have them show up on the startmenu bar all the time. Dont know that I need anything else on an always showing icon, but I guess I can add a few web shortcuts to it. Or move my web shortcuts to my tray launch, and some of the apps on the tray launch onto my startmenu bar.

Yes the WIFI companion on his site is the three day trial, but its one that works, and works great.

This is the tray launch that we are talking about.

http://www.savefile.com/files.php?fid=6516194

You can add between 10-11 shortcuts to your tray at the bottom of your today screen.

Posted by: i3onk

Damn, I cant think of anything i want to add to the bar, LOL. Just seams to a waste to not do it HAHA!

Posted by: robpet2

I had that traylaunch bout 3weeks ago and I didn't like the fact that you have to type in the entire location for the app you want to put in the tray.....or is there another way to get them there...

What I did was created a folder in my documents called shortcuts. I then pasted shortcuts i wanted on my tray into that folder. then the path was always the same with exception to the name.lnk

for example

my documents\shortcuts\memmaid.lnk
my documents\shortcuts\tcpmp.lnk

so on and so forth

Once you type the first one, you just use copy and paste to get the my
documents\shortcuts\
part into the add box, then type in the rest of the link. Actually only take a couple minutes using that method.

Well I'll be. I just found something neat. Dont know why I didnt find it before. Its the OEM TMO ROM RUU from xelencin

http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=44541

Hope it works. I guess I will have to test it out tomorrow. My many tests with the EXT rom didnt work. I pm'd xelencin to see if he can hook me up with the files needed to make an RUU. If he can, then maybe Ill work on creating my own EXT ROM. For now though, I am content haveg the RUU to get me back to OEM if needed.

Posted by: i3onk

OK, this is for those of you who are using traylaunch.

Turn off your traylaunch then use total commander to go into windows\startup you will find two shortcuts.
WiFiInit.exe
Init_Tray.exe
Delete or just move both of these shortcuts and do a soft reset. When your device boots back up, you won't have a tray. (this is what to do if you don't use tray launch and don't want a tray, to get a little more today screen space.
For those of us who use tray launch, just restart your tray launch. The comms icon will be gone, giving you one more spot to put another shortcut into your tray launch.

I was a bit lazy when xelencin first published the 2.17 custom ROM...so I waited to download the OEM RUU first as backup rather than worrying about taking my own backup. Sorry - hadn't been paying attention or I would have pointed you that way sooner!

If/when you learn about making RUU's, please let me know. I'd love to try that out too, including adding CAB's that will run various specific config changes such as registry entries. Please keep me in the loop on this!

Thx...

From what I have seen in my tests, no! After doing this, I went wifi and connected no problems.

To be safe I just moved my shortcuts to my minisd, just in case I had to restore them. Don't think I will need to.

Thx - if I don't seem to be around pls send PM - I might be starting a new gig soon, and might be longer between visits online. Thx!

Interesting re tray and wifiinit...except that I like stashing icons on the tray with ilauncher.

Still pondering WAD, but I know I'll need to set up omapclock first to keep my device from bogging down. As an aside -- the more closely I watch my device, the more I'm convinced that bluetooth is the real culprit -- eating both battery and memory. When I avoid BT, memory holds up for a few days, and battery tends to do very well also.

getting rid of tayinit and wifiinit doesnt get rid of yoru tray forever. It is only until you put something else into the tray and then the tray reappears. Basically this just gets rid of the comm manager icon in the tray to free up a spot for another shortcut.

Well one thing I can deduce from your join date is that you are a new owner of the MDA. This is a benifit for you. You can always do a hard reset and start over with the phone. Im sure you dont have alot of stuff on it yet, so you wont be losing much. First thing I would advise is for you to get SBP backup. Once you hard reset and get your phone the way you want it setup (before installing any third party apps) do a backup. If you have to hard reset again, it will be 100 times easier to get your phone back to where it was before something went wrong.

I have noticed the issue with agile myself, among other issues. That is one reason I switched to IM+ (available at http://shapeservices.com ). I still have the issue with it not ashowing up on my today screen, but not nearly as often. The best way to get it back to your today screen(agile or IM+) is to goto settings\personal\today and then close the settings. This will reinitialize the today screen placing your messenger back on it.

AS far as loosing the stuff on your startmenu bar, that is one issues I havent had yet. When going to 2.17 ROM i did experience it a couple of times, then it just stopped doing it. Wish I could be more help on this issue man sorry.

I use resco for my registry editing. Total commander is good too. The entry for the icon is

HKLM/Drivers/BuiltIn/RIL/enabledifferentgprsicon set that to 0

Oh and for those of you like myself that have 2.17 ROM and dont like the roaming icon (The triangle looking icon) this is the reg edit to get rid of that.

HKLM/Drivers/BuiltIn/RIL/DisableRoamingIndicator to 1

Oh and its SBP not S&B lol. You can get the backup here.

I LOVE RESCO Explorer. I actually have alot or Resco products.
Explorer
FTP addon
Regitry editor addon
Keyboard
Photo viewer
Capture(screenshot tool)

Pocket Plus is also a great tool, I use it, as do alot of people in this thread.

Tweaks2k2 is a must for me. After a hard reset, I use it to get alot of my settings done fast. I also use registry wizard for a couple that arent in Tweaks2k2.

SBP Backup is "THE MUST HAVE" of any tool you will purchase for your device.

I have the demo of air islands, I havent tried it yet. Supposed to be a great game.

A few pages back, I listed all of the apps that I use on my device. Dont think I could live without any of them.

Posted by: i3onk

I have been playing with the button settings on my WA2 all damn day, LOL.

I am having fun with it. You can actually map two actions per button. One for press and one for press and hold.

Another neat thing about WA2 button assigments is, you can actually set the startmenu BAR to run something when clicked too.

Its going to take some time to get them all the way I want them. I am having issues mapping one of them to BT Toggle. Doesnt want to let it work for some reason.

Oh heres another little tip for you guys.

I have the link to this thread on my links bar of my IE. It gets to be a pain in the butt to change the page number of the link everyday, 10 times a day lol. If you just set it at a really high number (Mine is set at page 300), it should always go to the last page of the thread.

OK getting ready to test the OEM TMO RUU. Cross your fingers all.

Update: Well......IT WORKED GREAT. I am now back to OEM OS ROM, Radio ROM, and EXT ROM. YAAAAAAAY! Now I know I am safe if I need to give this thing back to TMO for warranty work, replacement, or for the long awaited TMO update ROM flash. WHEW!!! What a relief. For anyone that wants to have it for safe keeping just in case...

Consumers and end-users are constantly looking for ways to expand the functionality of the Pocket PC. One of the most innovative ways is to participate in "podcasting," a new media movement that surfaced in October of this year. Podcasting is a way to broadcast audio content online. Similar to a text-based Web log ("blog"), podcasting lets people post their opinions and thoughts on the Web in audio form. Currently, there are no controls, regulations, or censoring activities associated with podcasting. All you need is a way to digitally record whatever it is you want to "podcast," using a setup as simple as a computer and a microphone. You can record your thoughts on any subject, conduct live interviews, add background music, and more. Podcasts are typically saved in MP3 format and vary in audio quality and file size, depending on the bit rate you use during the recording process. You can think of a podcast as an online radio talk show. After recording the audio file, the podcaster creates an "RSS feed" file that describes the podcast and location of the audio file. Visit the Wikipedia online encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...) for more information on the creation of RSS feed files and other podcasting topics.
How do I listen to podcasts?
Although some skill is needed to publish a podcast, downloading and listening to them is easy. Special programs similar to the news aggregators that handle RSS subscription feeds have been developed to automate this process. (Read more on news aggregators and RSS subscription feeds on page 67 of the August/September 2004 issue, or see it at: http://www.pocketpcmag.com/_....)
There are several options available to pull podcasts down from the Web. For this article, we'll focus on the installation, configuration, and use of Doppler, a Windows desktop PC program that lets you subscribe to podcast feeds and automatically pull the audio content down to your computer.
1. Download and install the current version of Doppler on your desktop PC. Go to the DopplerRadio Web site (http://www.dopplerradio.net) and click on the Download link in the right-hand column. This will take you to a page where you can download the program, and also describes how to install it. Skip the part about uninstalling Doppler RC1 unless you've installed the previous version of the program. Note also that you will need to install Microsoft's .NET framework version 1.1 in order for Doppler to work. If you utilize Microsoft's Windows Update feature, there is a good chance you have already installed .NET Framework 1.1. You can verify if you have installed it by going to the Start menu on your desktop PC and clicking on Settings>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs. If you see "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1" in the Installed Programs list, you can run Doppler. If .NET Framework 1.1 is not listed, download it from Microsoft's Web site (http://www.microsoft.com/dow...). Once you install it and Doppler, a shortcut icon for Doppler will appear in your system tray (Fig. 1).
Fig. 1: Once installed on your desktop PC, the Doppler icon appears on your system tray. In this screen shot, it is immediately to the left of the time.
2. Click the shortcut icon in your system tray to run the program. When you do this, three options are displayed: Maximize, Retrieve Now, and Exit. Choose Maximize to display Doppler's main screen (Fig. 2).
Fig. 2: Doppler's main screen.
3. Add new feeds. The software comes preconfigured with a test channel feed. Before going any further, you will want to add new feeds and configure the application settings. Click the Add Feed button (lower right) and the Feed entry screen is displayed (Fig. 3). The URL field is the only required field on this screen.
Fig. 3: Doppler's Feed entry screen lets you add new podcast feeds.
You can also use the Feed entry screen to limit the amount you download to conserve storage space. Podcast files can be large and I recommend using the two "Only download..." options below the URL field. For example, in Fig. 3, I've checked the "Only download last..." option and specified that Doppler only download the last 3 podcasts. I could also set Doppler to only download podcast files that are smaller than a specific file size. All this comes in handy if you subscribe to an audio feed that has numerous podcasts available. File storage space has a tendency to fill up fast.
Once you've entered your subscription feed details, click Add feed and Doppler will manage that podcast subscription. Doppler also supports "drag and drop" functionality with RSS feeds. For example, just drag an RSS link to Doppler's main screen (Fig. 2) and Doppler will add it to your podcast feeds list.
4. Specify file folder to receive podcasts. The Main tab of Doppler's Options screen (Fig. 4) allows you to specify the target download location for your podcast files. This field should contain the path to the file folder on your desktop PC used to synch files with your Pocket PC via ActiveSync. Doppler also allows you to configure how often it should check for content. Since podcasting is relatively new and there is a limited amount of space on a Windows Mobile device, I recommend using a setting of 4 hours or greater, depending on how often you synch your device with a host computer.
Fig. 4: Doppler's Options screen lets you specify the file folder you save your podcasts in, as well as how often it checks for new podcasts.
Note: For this to work you must configure ActiveSync to synchronize files. Open ActiveSync on your desktop PC, click on the Tools menu, and select Options. Then, in the Mobile Devices list, make sure the Files option is checked. The first time you do this, a file folder is created to hold the files you want to synchronize, and a shortcut to this folder is placed on your desktop. It will look something like this:
C:\Documents and Settings\{your name}\My Documents\Pocket_PC My Documents
Once you have the ActiveSync synchronization folder created, you can browse to it from Doppler's Options screen. In my case, I've added a subfolder named "Doppler" to this folder, so that I can easily find my podcast files. The subfolder and its content are synchronized and appear in the Pocket PC's My Documents folder. This last point is extremely important to remember because ActiveSync, by design, stores all synchronized files in the My Documents folder in main memory and cannot be configured to sync them to a storage card. You will have to keep an eye on your main memory and delete podcasts as soon as possible, or use File Explorer to move them to a storage card. (Alternatively, you could download the podcast files to a different directory on your PC, and then move the ones you want to play on your Pocket PC into the ActiveSync synchronization folder.)
5. Download your podcasts. Once you've set up your folders, configured Doppler, and added some podcast feeds, you're ready to go! You can either wait for Doppler to automatically pull down the content, or you can click on the Retrieve Now button in Doppler's main screen (Fig. 2) to begin the process manually. In either case, the podcasts you've subscribed to will be retrieved, categorized, and stored in the subfolder you've created.
6. Synchronize podcasts with your Pocket PC. Once you've downloaded the podcasts, all that's left is to synchronize your Windows Mobile device, which automatically places the audio files in the My Documents folder of your device. Once synchronized, you simply open up Windows Media Player or the digital audio player of your choice, locate the podcast you want to hear, and play it.
Ready To Roll
That's all there is to it! While you are at work or are sleeping, Doppler will be your automatic "podcatcher." Of course, your desktop PC must be connected to the Internet for this to work. But you don't have to have your Pocket PC connected to the desktop all the time. Just synchronize it periodically to transfer podcasts to your Windows Mobile device.
Although Doppler helps you limit the number and size of the podcasts you download, they tend to accumulate quickly. I recommend removing podcast files from your desktop PC once you have synchronized them over to your Windows Mobile device and after you have listened to them. I emphasize the last part of the sentence because when you delete a podcast (or any file) from the synchronization folder on the desktop PC, the corresponding file on the Pocket PC is automatically deleted the next time you synchronize the device! The alternative is to immediately move the podcasts from the My Documents folder in your device's main storage to a storage card and then delete them from the sync folder on the desktop PC. Doppler maintains a history file that keeps track of all the podcasts you've downloaded. This ensures that it will not pull content that it has pulled previously.
As an alternative to Windows Media Player you might consider using a third-party media player that supports Bookmarks. Bookmarks allow you to "mark" your audio file so that you can begin playback from the exact spot you left off in the podcast or playlist. I've used Conduit's Pocket Player (http://www.conduits.com) to listen to the MP3-formatted podcasts I download. Its bookmarking function makes it very easy to return to a specific spot in the podcast.
The sky's the limit!
As you can imagine, there is no limit to what you can podcast. You can put together shows that range in content and length, customized to meet the needs of business associates, friends, or others. Anyone with a microphone, personal computer, and Internet connection can record and post their podcasts. You can even use your Windows Mobile device to record an audio file for podcasting.
In addition, software like Doppler makes it simple for you to pull down content of your choice. And as podcasting becomes more popular, the variety of available content continues to expand. As TiVo and PVR's have changed the way we watch television, podcasting will change the way we listen to audio content. With Windows Mobile devices in the equation, we'll not only be able to listen to what we want, we'll listen to it when we want, wherever we want!

A podcast is essentially just an audio file (MP3 or WMA). If you can get a direct link to the file itself (thats what the RSS tag links 2) then you can download it right from within PIE or Opera.
For example try mine (yes shameless self promotion)

Shocking my MDA went dead as a brick today. Not sure if battery is gone or what? But no activity! Oh well. I can't eve go back to OEM. I hope it's battery, although only 2 months old. I haven't even messed with it for weeks with anything new.

Weird, last night my daughter said that it sounded like someone was calling me, but late at night that's unusuall, so I paid no attention to it. Maybe MDA was giving me warning or something. Left it unplugged all night, unusuall for me. But why would that make a difference, I charge it daily all day while at desk, weird. I kept getting this morning a boot up that would stop at my custom "gremlin" screen and go nowhere, so I cold boot, came back to old Windows screen, and same sound, a different chime, just little quick beeps, or something. Weird. Dead as a door knob!

Man I hope it's a bad battery, or I have to return to TMO, and see what they say. In mean time, I have to go back to my original Pocket PC to have phone device today. Will let you know..

Have you tried a hard reset?

hold down the comm manager and voice record buttons at the same time and hit reset button. continue to hold the buttons until the black screen comes up asking you if you was to reformat (i think that's what it says) release the buttons and hit the green phone button. voila, hard reset in progress.

How do I change my system font? When I'm browsing in resco my font when I hit the "menu" buttons are huge.

You can use tweaks2k2 to change your fonts. you can even get your favorite font from your desktop pc and put it in windows\fonts on your device amd use them. I was using comic sans for a little while.

OK, scratch my last post. Don't hard reset. After thinking about it, I figured out your problem.

If you are anything like me, and we know you are, we are all the same here lol. You used tweaks2k2 to enable the low battery alarm. that is what your daughter heard thinking someone was calling. That is also the series of beeps that you heard when booting up. So just plug it in for a couple of hours and you should be good to go.

...and if the hard reset does the trick, you can use one of your SPB backups to restore apps and system data...

My MDA went a bit nuts this morning. Was totally silent, regardless of the settings. I suspect that PocketZenPhone might have been involved, but it's not clear that PZP was the problem or WM5 went nuts (or maybe even WisBar, since it hooks sound events too). Anyway - I used one of my SPB backups - restored the system as it appeared about a week ago, and everything is fine once again. It's SO nice to have restorable backups like this sitting on the miniSD card -- I can recover my full config right off the card without having to go back to the pc. Hopefully I won't need this often, but it's nice to have the option.

Let us know about your MDA...good luck with a full reset!

Good thinking. I read a couple of posts from somebody else who thought their MDA had died. Didn't seem to charge up and revive on the USB cable to the pc...but I suspect that it could have been that it needed more power, exclusively charging rather than charging and trying to establish comms with the pc at that point. This poster reported that when he plugged the MDA directly into the wall charger, it came back to life again.

I suspect that the i3onkster is right on this one...

YEs, that happened to me as well..good thing too as I kept trying to 'hard reset' it but there wasn't enough battery left for me to do that.

Got home, plugged in for 20 minutes, turned it on..and it was fine. *whew*. I was just trying to make alot of work for myself it seems. I was so convinced the phone had a drastic issue and needed to be hard-reset when it was just a dead battery all along. I was confused b/c I could 'boot' to the first screen with backlight..then it would die shortly afterward and I mistook that for the phone crashing. :\

Jonazen,

Did you get your new HS850 from Motorola yet? I just got my replacement..and the 'hiss' still seems to be there which is more noticeable as I raise the volume on the headset. Is that just a FOL with these headsets? I thought maybe the hiss was specific to the one I had before but I'm now thinking that is an issue in general.

I had the older version of this (not sure the #) but it was all gray..instead of the 'blue-tinged' area around the phone button. It had much worse sound quality...however there was no hiss in the background while the bt connection was 'open'.

Yup - got my replacement in the mail. Have to send the old one back before they charge me!

Mine both look identical. Both have a silver gray body, and a blue plastic (glass look) bezel around the phone button.

The new one works...but I have to admit that I'm really not happy with the sound quality. I still have an old Jabra BT200, but I haven't used it in a year. I loved the sound quality on that one, but it really hurt to wear for more than 15 minutes -- and the HS850 feels fine to wear for hours. Pity that sound and comfort seem to be mutually exclusive.

Don't know if it's my imagination, but Voice Command doesn't seem to do as well with this new HS850 as it did with my older one (1 year old). Far more mistakes and greater need to repeat my request. Voice Command without a headset still works beautifully...

What really showed up the sound quality was when I used the wired headset. Even though it doesn't fit my ears especially well (except it's better now with the Griffin earjams I'm trying out), callers' voices sound SO much better with a wired headset. Unfortunately, people at the other end tell me I sound great when I used the HS850, but when I use the wired headset, they say I sound muffled.

*sigh*

ARgh and double argh! I noticed Howard Chui gave that cool looking plantronics a "thumbs up" and have been intrigued but I would have to know if works well w/ the VC hack before going down that road.

I agree, my family seems to think I sound fine on the HS850 but I'm not so thrilled w/ the sound quality I get on my end with it.

Also, VC definitely has more problems on the BT than the phone (that whole 11khz v. 22khz argument MSFT was making?) but it generally works well enough. Here are my tips in using the headset:

1. Make sure the radio is turned down in the car..it won't work usually if I have the radio up above a whisper.

2. "Pause" ever so slightly before talking. Once I hear the little beep of the VC, I wait a second before I start speaking.

3. When it says "Call so & so at home?" count to 1, then say "yes". If I say yes or no immediately, the headset/VC almost never catches it whereas the phone generally does without having to pause.

So in short, those are the tips I've found make it work with the headset in my car...I don't generally wear the headset at work, so I hvaen't tried it around the office. ;-)

To be honest, the fact that I have to have the BT 'on' (ie 'the hiss'!) for it to channel alerts & beeps into my headset make this a non-starter for me. I can't stand to have that in my ear all day..if it were completely mute, I might consider it but I can't stand the hiss.

Yup - I've come to the same conclusions re: your tips -- I wind up closing the window, turning down the radio and shushing anyone in the car. The HS850 apparently does NOT filter out background noise well.

Also figured out the pausing tricks too via trial and error -- and learned that if I pause too long, VC simply beeps and gives up.

Re: hiss - I haven't noticed that - maybe there's a problem with yours? Anyway - in the last few days, I've taken to leaving the headset off and closed, sitting in the center console tray next to the shift lever of my car. I've been opening it and popping it on when a call comes in. Not sure if I'll keep doing this - would certainly be tough if traffic were bad at the time.

I'm glad to have a "new" hs850 "free" from Moto, but I'm really not thrilled with it. Wish I could try some of the others. Also saw the plantronics -- and even handled one in a store a couple of days ago, considering it. But I'd have to find a place where I know I can return it if I'm not happy, with no "restocking fee". I know that I can do this, for example, at a Cingular store (they carry that headset), but I'd probably have to pay list price for it there.

everyone prob woke up with a ton or silent triggers for the email - that might have killed the batteries .... now this may sound like a weird question, can the mda get over the air provisioning??? just asking because when I use to work at nextel years ago that's how the would update some phones and stuff....

I've gone to system tricks, Collection 2 tab, and checked Font Size and put it as a few things. It doesn't change.

Im an expert at that bro.

Everything turned out o.k. I took MDA to TMO with receipt and ready for battle at a local shop that has techs, and the first thing they did, of course, is plug the original power to the MDA, and like magic green light came on. I never felt so happy .

It seems I am very stupid for a guy with all my experience, but human non the less . I know you may laugh but this could happen to someone else .

I got MDA less then 3 months ago, I can't remember that day how I charged it initially, but must have used original power. However, since then I have been charging MDA with my BT 500 headset charger, and in car I had bought from Radio Shack a charger that is very cool which changes heads for other devices, rather then keep buying new chargers. It seems they sold me the wrong head.

So I was chareging MDA all this time, almost 2.5 months later with .5 or less amps, rather then the manufacturer charge of 1amp. Hey I thought the darn plug looked the same , and battery always said charged 100%. So put the original MDA plug back in box.

But what I think happend is, The device was left on my desk without charging all night and for reasons not sure, but possibly related to the .5amps charging, battery got totally drained out.

When I went to charge up again, using still lower amp chargers, it was working for moment, but then went completely DEAD! That's when I went into panic, and cold boot device using that other method to Hard boot! I had the chance to test WM5, to see if all my contacts and calendars and stuff would be intact after battery was fully charged with correct charger, but since I had cold/hard booted device lost all. No matter I still had good backups, but would hve been nice to see WM5 in action after a dead, DEAD battery!

When nothing I did helped, I thought I junked my MDA, or worst had to pay TMO to fix it, and be out service for a while, using older pocket pc. But after TMO charged it for just 20 mnutes. I was able to restore my handy self extract final backups, and since MDA had done a scheduled backup last night of just databases, bingo boys, back in business in less then 20 minutes.

I then went to Radio Shack and they ordered the right end for my charger, shipping and all at no cost. Hard lesson to be learned.

Funny laugh about this, once it loaded the EXt Rom, I was at the basic screen and felt handicapped using original menus, could not find memory, or search for storage card, I felt lost without my WA2, Spb Plus, Diary, all my good stuff and hard hacking work. But for a moment it was nice to see 26MB Ram!

Posted by: nyvram

Glad to hear you had a happy ending.

I know what you mean...I'm so used to WA2, SPB, etc...that I can't get along without them! THey're pretty much core functionality for me at this point. Imagine..having to install a bunch of 3rd party software so your Windows phone works like...well.."Windows".

I dont knwo what to tell you about your fonts bro, I havent had these problems. You should be able to change them with the tweaks2k2 no prob. Maybe try a different font. Find one you like on your PC and transfer it to your MDA and see hwo that works out for you. I know it works, I did it with comic sans.

Dont even bother regietering Opera for now man. This Beta is free until june. At which time I wouldnt be suprised if they make this version a retail version and come out with yet another beta for a few months.

Glad it all worked out for you man. They say anything about the ROM version you were running? Or did they not even notice?

they probably didnt waste time checking the rom..being that with trouble shooting they probably plugged it in the wall before trying to investigate the system itself.....

Hey MadDog - great news! Glad to hear you got it working. Now this is the SECOND time I've read about the same problem - and same solution: using the ORIGINAL power supply to recharge, rather than an alternate (e.g., the USB to PC cable). Definitely worth making this a FAQ item - could save a lot of other people grief.

Welcome back!

Well I think I may be getting Juni's newest WA2 skin set.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/anders.ruohio/scifi.html

I have ALWAYS been a big Trekky. I used to have windows blinds with a complete Lcars theme. So this would be great for my PPC. I love the secondary skin too the SciFi one.

I grew up on the first Star Trek (along with Outer Limits, Twilight Zone, etc)...I like the SciFi theme, but the Star Trek theme looks a bit 2-dimensional for me...not sure I like it as much. I lean towards glassy 3D stuff like Vista Light at this point.

Not sure what my next theme set will be...but I can tell that I'm going to want to change skins periodically!

And while I'm at it. In Opera, under menu, there is suppose to be an "Options" choice to go nto to enter the registration code. It's not there. How do I register this?

I got to admit this is a riddle to me. The only info I get on this is:
Start Opera
Select "Menu" and use joystick down to select "6 Options"
Use joystick down to select "5 Register Opera". Type in the registration code for Opera in the registration field
Press 'OK'

I went to Opera's Forums, and searched till my brain died and still cannot come up with the answer. I ask myself, how can the developers of Opera have u buy the registration code using your IMEI from phone, and not tell you how to register?? I gave it a try bro, cause I too will have to register soon, but maybe we got the wrong version, cause these instructions, the only decent thing I found, makes no sense. It does not exist in our menu. "6 Options"???? I will assume their talking about "joystick" which is the area surrouning the button?

I hope u find ur answer cause it drove me crazy looking, and still can't give u answer. Sorry

Interesting u say that, cause I was looking at guys eyes, when it started up saying 2.17 and wondered if he would ask me, if I upgraded to a custom ROM, but he did not notice. These guys just used common sense bro, they were not totally sure wht happened, except when i told them how I was charging, for my owne knowledge, then he shared the fact that the charger uses 1AMP and that is designed by manufacturer for MDA. I guess be careful about chargers, not all are designed to do what ours does. He tried the MDA charger on his Razer and it did not charge for him. So his point was well taken.

They did not even noticed. Probably cause they don't expect it. Were ahead of time here bro, in another dimension. But of course had they taken MDA in for repair, maybe things would have been different?

True bro, cause all the Motorola Bt headsets have same connector as MDA, and MDA shows charging easily! The guys at Radio Shack did mention I had to have to right one for the car charger I bought, but in the end, got me the wrong one, cause the MDA Vario is hard to find in their computers. I had to educate them to look under Qtek9100, Os mini, etc.

*sigh*

This is great! It sounded like all my issues with the HT820, MDA, and Dongle with VoIP. You can hear stereo beautifully with HT820 over Dongle and PC. If MDA rings, the HT820 answers with no problem, lowering the sound of the HT820 PC music. The dial tone from VoIP sounds good, but the Mic on HT820 won't work with Vonage PC VoIP. U just can't seem to win bro!!

Well that's why I love Radio Shack, and Circuit City, and any store that lets me buy and try. Stores that give u no problem returning. You can pay more, and try, then if it works to your expectations, buy via eBay. Although things on eBay are not always wht they seem.

I was back and forth with a vendor about the HT820 for 58 bucks, then realized it was the pouch for them, not the headset. When I asked him if he carried the headset and for home much, it came out to around 111 bucks, this guys crazy! I just retuned a pair to Radio Shack for credtit at 131 bucks.

Oh well keep looking

Here is something that works for me in supermarkets. I take the headset off put it close to my mouth and say, call my home, or what ever, then, bring it back to ear quikly if MSVC will have contact calling options, then back to mouth, to say yes, then it works. Cause I gave up in Supermarkets unless i do what I just said.

The funny thing is this bro's. It works beautifully from MDA. Just pickup phone and give command, and use BT to talk. Anyway no real solutions.

Yeah. I LOVE the convenience of BT...but I really wish the sound quality was better. Reminds me of the first pair of wireless headphones I bought for my wife about 10 years ago to use with the TV in the bedroom (she'd often be up LATE when I was trying to sleep -- figured it would help out!). Anyway - these were early infrared headphones -- had to be line of sight, and if you tilted your head the wrong way the sound would cut out. Sound quality was mediocre anyway...they're somewhere in the basement now. Hey - I should find them and sell them on ebay!

I'm going to see if I can pick up the Cardo Scala 500 at CompUSA tomorrow for $9.99 (after their rebate). Some people seem to like them, and for $10 I can hardly turn down an extra BT headset...

True! My only regret is that we don't have 128MB Ram. I would have kept this phone for years to come. If they would have made the Vario II with 128MB I would jump on it. But now just sit cool and wait for future, cause I can't live without these applications anymore. Way to convenient and way to pretty . I was never happier till I saw my "Gremlin" pop up before password. Even my wife was happy for me!!

That is so incredible! I had same experience! I can remember my first set, same experienc bro! But I have never owned another coordless one again. I know I remember, the info red had to point precisely right.

As far as BT Headsets, I have had pretty good success with the H500 and MSVC. Noice is ok from feedback, but not bad.
