I probably have links somewhere...but I'm totally inundated right now with links, files, a bazillion download directories and files, stacks of notes on my desk, etc. Need to wade through all of this and make some sense of it. I'll see what I can find and pass it along. I'm just glad that you're not drowning and waiting for me to find and throw you a life preserver from among the piles on my desk!

back on topic - when using the bluetooth toggle, it seems like I get a lot of static when my mda is on my hip and turn parallel to the mda...(and no I do not have a plate in my head)...

Please...it's likely that 99.9% of us get loads of email like this from well-meaning friends and relatives every day.

The whole reason to come to a site like HoFo is to be able to focus on a particular set of topics, and hopefully not be spammed with generic "fun stuff" -- especially when it's huge. You've got to remember that many people come here via GPRS connections on their cell phones, and it's positively painful to download something that big, and then discover that it's WAY off topic....

Please...no more here? Thx for understanding...

You pass 3,000 posts in a single thread..and then you're bound to get a post about petting fish. Happens every time. ;-)

Congrats, MadDog! You had post #3,000. HOFO will be sending you your free MDA with BT stereo headphones shortly. The moderator just told me...

Dear god man, next time you get the urge to post some jokes, email them to your friends please.

Another note about Spb Pocket Plus..

I removed the weather from the Spb Plus tabs, cause it made little sense, and besides you lost the spin of the little world when updating weather. But this evening it occured to me to put Diary in the Spb PP tabs. After all Diary is 5 icons anyway. But that did something interesting. First it immediately gave me tons of room on Today screen to enlarge my icons. 2nd, for unknown reasons it increased my RAM to just over 20MB, and even saw just over 21 MB's :-) Not just that but on soft reset I was getting about 17MB, now a little over 18-19, and with a tiny help from SKRam Up a wini tiny over 21MB's. Just when I thought it was over for me. hehehe. Life is better boys!

Here are some quick shots.

Don't ask me what that cut out line is on top of my skin, still trying to figure it out.

What do you mean by downloads, a little confused. Are u installing from active sync? or a cabfile? Well it does not really matter cause either way from ActiveSync or Cab install you should be prompted by MW5 to install to memory or storage? Are you not getting that prmpt? As far as cache are you talking about pie or something? What cache?

Also clarify "good looking out on this link ....." Sorry bro maybe it's me I'm getting old

Be kind to me bro! Hey I told you Im human. I have seen skins that have that, but this offers no purpose that I can see. The bars are always the same color?

Either I don't pay attention to it often, or it doesn't seem to be working. How do u get rid of it! It's taking up a tiny space. Did I accidentally enable it? Or is it automatic with WA2?

i used a cab file to reinstall opera and now when i use opera, anything that i click on to download goes to my documents on my mda's internal memory instead of the minisd card..... i thought i had it set up b4 to download to storage card and opera mobile is not giving me a prompt for a location to save a file unlike PIE which gives me a popup option...
do i need to do a registry hack? and if so whats the hkey...

Best program to free up available space and memory? I've seen a few and I'm lookin for 1 that does it the best.

Aaaaaaaaallllllso...In contacts, when a new contact is added, is there any way to prevent it from breaking the alphabetical listing and showing up at the top?

Alot of us use sktools for freeing up our ram. There is an app inside of it called freeup ram that works great. I have it mapped to the voice record button, push and hold action.

The way I get my most used contacts to show up at the top of the contacts list is to put a # in front of the name.

#Melissa# is what I have for my GF. I put the # at the end just for symmetry.

Isn't there a way to copy all contacts to the sim and re-alphabetize them

Posted by: i3onk

alphabetical is alphabteical man. The only way you are going to be able to re-alphabetize them, is to change the peoples names. Or to add something to the front of them. Sorry man.

Did you check your email for the registration code? When you got the download link from handango there should have been a registration code next to the link, they will also send you an email within a few minutes with the same information on it.

Ok, So I just got my MDA (AGAIN) and I want to know some good apps and some good things to have on it.

1.AIM program

2. REG EDI

3. Whatever you guys think is good.

I am a totally newbie to this forum and to the MDA. I just got it a week and half ago and then found this forum. I'm having some issues and am trying to decide whether to keep the MDA or return it and get the MDA. Since I only have a few days left before I can return it I have not been able to go thru all of the threads and see if the answers to my questions have been addressed already. So please excuse me if these questions are dumb and/or have been addressed already.

I have found that it gets stuck and I have to do a soft reset. I've had to do this 5 times or so in the 10 days I've had it. It has occurred mostly when I'm surfing the net but it happened once when I was trying to listen to the windows media. Should this happen that often?

Is there a way to make it surf faster?

I've read the threads where you discuss how to add things but I need a site that explains some of the computer jargon to computer dunces like me. Do you know where I could find that? (My roommate is an IT guy and I could ask him but I like to try to learn things on my own)

Why does it keep updating e-mail and sending me a text message telling me I have e-mail? I tried turning the updating e-mail off but it still does it.

It seems like the battery runs out very quickly. I left it unplugged one night and by the middle of the next day it was totally out of battery power. Is this normal? (I tried disconnecting the internet and changing the backlight and power settings to see if this helped conserve power but it didn't help that much)

If you go into programs you will see it. It is an app withing sktools. You wont see it in the actually sktools folder through explorer. It will be in programs though. I have it mapped to a button so I can just hit the button and freeup some ram.

NP man glad to help.

As far as the ringtones, I believe if you putt them on the storage card, they have to be placed straight onto the card. No folders or anything.

also since i have all tha sofware lyk spb and games on my phone is there anyway to juss transfer them to the storage card without having to reinstall them??

Games yes. Most games dont really have an install process other than just copying them to where you want. Apps, you will have to uninstall and reinstall.

Actually, I have found agile to be too glitchy. I use IM+ personally. I find it to be much more stable, and alot better looking.

Something useful(?) Maybe not.

Whenever your phone uses VC to notify you of the most recent incoming call..it appears to save that last digitzed voice-notification in the following dir:

\Application Data\Volatile\TTSCallerID.wav

for instance is the last incoming call it announced to me.

Pretty cool if you wanted to take this file & use it somewhere. I had no idea it was creating WAV files when it was announcing things on the phone.

I suspect its because when a call is coming in, it announces the caller more than one time so it stores it as a 'playback file' to save on overhead.

(Just a theory).

I am glad for choices. But that is the reason I never liked using the default Voice Speed Dial. It takes ups wav files. Can you imagine if you actually setup all your contacts with wav files? Not to mention the random needs to use a voice command on device.

I love Microsoft Voice Command. Does not require anything outside of installation. If I am driving around and need to call a random number, all I say is, "Dial 555-1212. You can't do that with Voice Dial. I have phone numbers in a spreadsheet, can call up the spread sheet with MSVC, briefly look at a number, and say, "dial 555-6363.

I can understand that VoiceDial is a Free Bee, sort of speaking, since I don't believe anything is free in this country, but MSVC is the best voicecommand system in the market. The flexibility is 2nd to none.

But that's my humble opionion of course.

Posted by: pmm0724

Is there any reason to need both?

Can MS Voice Command be installed to storage card?

I don't believe it's recommended, but I have heard from other posts that apps like MSVC, or Spb Pocket Plus, have been installed on MiniSD cards and do work well. Try it, and see how it sounds to you. It can't hurt

Posted by: i3onk

I run my pocket plus on my MiniSD. it works fine. I am actually concidering putting my pocket breeze and contact breeze on my MiniSD and checking ow that works out for me. I dont know though. I have my device running so smoothly right now. I think this is the smoothest I have had it runing yet. I have rebooted only once today, and when I did that I still had about 18.6M or RAM memory left. The only reason I rebooted was because I was testing a IR TV remote control app and it locked up on me. I boot up with almost 22M and after running the one app I run after boot up, (IM+) I have about 21.2M still remaining. I am about to make my FINAL backup for 2.17 ROM with 1.12 radio ROM. I ran this thing from 5AM this morning to about 6PM this evening, and still had about 17.6M left before installing the TV remote app and having to reboot. This ia afeter writing many emails, about 12 posts in various forums, about 50 txt messages to the GF and 4 phone calls. All of this done with BT always ON.

But that's my humble opionion of course.

ummm. maddog...I`m talking about VC. you don't honestly think I`m using that built-in carp do you?

I was referring to the fact that VC generates that wav file after it announces a call on your phone...go look, you have that file on your phone and don't even know it!

O.K. A very deserving apology here . Your right, intersting!

It seems to save many of the same folder under name: XMeinst0000304A0-then different strings, but nothing in them darn folders.

But ur right thre is a wav file of my last missed call. Interesting observation bro.. I jumped to a conclusion. Next time say MSVC, then I will immediately understand Good info.

I am going to monitor this now after a call, and why it creates so many folders with nothing in them. I deleted them except wav file with last call, just to see what it does next time.

Works best before u start running to much stuff on device. After that it takes way too long to work, and gets back only some of the RAM but not all. I find it works best for me after soft reset, cause after a soft reset device uses some RAM and you can get it back. Also works best after running one app, especially if you can run it automatically after "X"ing app, which I have not tried.

I think it could be. I have actually been thinking of getting another 2G MiniSD just for movies and such. Since I have TCPMP installed on my card figurd I could install it on the second card and just use it for entertainment when I need too.

If you have music on your MiniSD then I think this would be a great way to go for a docking station. Hell, if I was a huge music guy with many mp3's on my card I would buy it in a heart beat.

It seems I am very stupid for a guy with all my experience, but human non the less . I know you may laugh but this could happen to someone else .

I got MDA less then 3 months ago, I can't remember that day how I charged it initially, but must have used original power. However, since then I have been charging MDA with my BT 500 headset charger, and in car I had bought from Radio Shack a charger that is very cool which changes heads for other devices, rather then keep buying new chargers. It seems they sold me the wrong head.

So I was chareging MDA all this time, almost 2.5 months later with .5 or less amps, rather then the manufacturer charge of 1amp. Hey I thought the darn plug looked the same , and battery always said charged 100%. So put the original MDA plug back in box.

But what I think happend is, The device was left on my desk without charging all night and for reasons not sure, but possibly related to the .5amps charging, battery got totally drained out.

Sorry for the late reply, but I've been out of touch.

Yeah, the manual says that if the battery is totally drained, you have to use the AC charger to recharge it (I think that's the only thing in the manual I read!). They were basically saying that you can't charge it with the USB cable when it's fully drained, you have to use the AC. They didn't even talk about a car charger in the manual, so I don't know how that would work if the battery was totally gone (assuming you're using the right one, of course! Now you got me thinking--I better check mine...)

I will just sacrafice the RAM, which mind you has not been bad for me, since I put Spb Diary on my Spb Pocket Plus tabs, usually about 19-20MB's, till I can upgrade to a phone with 128MB RAM in future.

I keep flip flopping. I download Wisbar Lite, but I really didn't want to deal with uninstalling Wisbar, installing Lite, etc, until I was fairly certain this is what I wanted to do.

Re: "sound hook". I've tried disabling it and haven't noticed the difference. What events is Wisbar hooking, and what does it do - is this where it replaces system sounds with those from its theme?

Also - with Wisbar loaded up, have you noticed that you have no control over System Volume? You can set it -- but then Wisbar will set it back to 1 it seems (unless it's just on MY system!!!).

Does that happen in your setup?

I've been experimenting with built-in themes (such as WA default) and Pocket PC Default. Memory seems to be holding up better than with Juni themes, and if *seems* that the system is faster as well. Not quite as fast as with NO Wisbar at all...but the speed diff may be worth it to keep Wisbar.

Need to get an additional stylus for my MDA. I looked it up on ebay and none of those MDA stylus' look like the extendable kind I have. Where is a good (reliable) place to buy one?

Posted by: jonazen

BTW: I DID read that Wisbar Lite will be support WAD (wisbar advance desktop)...which is an interesting possibility. This means that you could conceivably skin EVERYTHING (entire desktop), have have several virtual pages - but built on a much lighter base that Wisbar Advance 2.

However...although the version of WL that's supposed to support WAD was planned for release a few weeks ago, I don't see any sign that it's out yet. Could be any day now...

Well the version I just downloaded last night, says it supports WAD. Ill check it out in a few inutes and get back to you guys.

Update: It does not support it. Lieing bastards lol. I guess he is still updating WAD to work properly with WBL. Guess we can just wait and see.

Turns out that the "support" info was a bit misleading. I posted the question at Lakeridge Software, and learned that the issue is with WAD, not WL. Seems that the latest beta of WAD works with WL. Haven't tried this yet ... looks like it will require some serious time investment... but I'm curious.

Still experimenting with lighter weight WA2 skins before giving up on it completely. Generally good results, except that it really seems to interfere with sounds on various odds ways still -- such as overriding my System Volume settings (from PZP) and forcing it to 1 ever time.

Can you check your system volume setting with WA2 installed, and see if it does this?

I did notice that when I used the slider on the side of my device to change the volume, that it changed the OEM volumes slider on the startmenu bar. It never changed the WA2 volume slider bar. I never tried changing the volume with the WA2 slider. I always used the device slider.

Where can i get the new WAD beta? I dont think that it is the one on the lakeridge site.

Update: Nevermind, I found it through the forums. I was looking through the WBL forums not the WAS, HAhA.

AS far as Flashing your ROM to 2.17. There is also a flash from xelecin that will flash you back to OEM ROM if you need too.

Still some glitches with WAD and WL. When you try to run it by going to next page ro previous page, it just brings up the task switcher from WL. I need to read the forums a little more to see if there is an explanation for this.

That Earthcomber looks pretty cool, but checking the site out it seems to only do big cities and metro areas, I live in a very rural area (Mendocino County) and travel in mostly rural and small/mid size towns here in NorCal, does it do those types of areas as well?

Back to minimo - pulled a couple of sites it was working okay, even howard forums looked aiight... but when I pulled espn.com it crashed like a pickup into a jetta....I will test it ou somemore over the next couple of days....

about flashing the rom I have to get my laptop somewhere so I can download the file, I hear its about 40mbs... i'll probably deal with changing the rom in a couple of weeks.... my mda seems to running aiight with the oem rom... just that I can't access some of the google stuff, and not being able to use java midlets...

not sure off all the areas - in the description of the program it says if you travel to certain citys it gives you a map including landmarks, resturants, etc.... it has other mapsyou can download but you have to signup for the membership, I just didn't do it yet.... another program you might wanna try since you in norcal, would be Metro... its on www.freewareppc.com - they update that program bout every week with new citys... I'm in Newport News VA and they have maps in there but the only problem is that metro is for the subway system... there is a roadmaps program but I didn't have luck running the app...
matter of fact there is a street maps program that compusa sells for like 30bucks it has all the street maps of the us on there but I'm looking for a freeware version first to make sure I'm getting my moneys worth...

theres also a free weather app like sbp weatther but its called weather to go 4.0 --- it has a plug in and looks almost like sbp weather but it only updates when being synched to the pc, and it would let me change the default cities but there is a menu that lets you change it, but the today screen never changed....

if anyone has dopeWARS post your highest score...

and are there anyother games similar to dopewars or like that's style of play out there?

Posted by: robpet2

earthCOMBER actually has almost every city in the usa... if you can't find the city on www.earthcomber.com/mobile
then just go to the site straight from your pc(desktop) and search that way and then use the updater to load the map...

Posted by: ilvla2

Thanks, I checked that link and it does have maps for where I live and every other area, I was impressed, thanks again! I am going to put it on my MDA now!

Posted by: robpet2

I signed up with them last night... it apears that site works better with opera mini instead of PIE... METRO is another program that is helpful too, it provides bus schedules and train routes ( basically public transportatio ) to and fro within a city, I think it tells you driving direction but I can't remember, I removed a few days ago but I think I still have the cab for it... I removed it cause I haven't used public transpo since living in newyork almost 10yrs ago... but metro has worldwide cities...

earthcomber seems okay I have to load up the map for my area later on.. it comes preset with new york city...

Posted by: robpet2

just realized I posted the wrong link, here's the right one.

http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/

they have plenty of free programs and the site looks better than most freeware sites......

Not sure this will help Jonazen, but I have never had a problem with sound using WA2. Volume stays were I put it.

My biggest issue right now is background light goes to 10Sec, even if i put it at 5 min. I had it going good after crash, but went back to defaulting to 10Sec. Like ur sound, that's driving me bunkers.

I read something about that on Lakeridge forums. Starting to wish my Wizard had 256mb RAM and a 500mhz processor...Then I'd simply keep Wisbar and WAD and be done with it. Tempted to try that combo anyway, along with OMapclock to speed things up....

Still don't understand the way Wisbar Advance 2 is messing with my system volume. Not sure if it's right, or if my install is corrupt. Frustrating, because it seems that with it setting system volume to 1, not all notifications are being handled by the Wisbar theme, so I'm NOT hearing some notifications. Can't be positive just yet...but something doesn't seem right here...

I haven't actually tried measuring the range...but I've actually been surprised at how good it's been. I find that when I'm standing outside some small office buildings in my area, I often pick up several WLAN's, even though some must be across the street. In places like Panera's or my local library, I get wall to wall reception. At home, I can connect from anywhere in the house (and it's a good sized house), as well from my front porch or rear deck. So far, I've left the Wireless LAN Power Mode set to the midpoint between "Best Performance" and "Best Battery".

Do you have range problems everywhere? Or could your issues be related to one particular WiFi router?

There are probably hundreds of posts in this forum on that subject...

In short - yes - with a single mod and a bit of a workaround, a number of bluetooth headsets will work quite well with MS Voice Command.

The mod, often referred to as "the bluetooth hack" and packaged fairly elegantly by Darryl Burling, changes settings in WM5 so that MSVC is the program invoked when the phone becomes aware of an incoming bluetooth request (as when you tap the connect button on your headset).

The workaround is needed because the combination of MSVC and WM5 doesn't properly close the BT audio connection at the end of a call. So if you were to just depend on the call ending to also end your BT audio connection, you'd be disappointed -- the next time you tap the connect button on the headset, Voice Command would not respond. For the headsets that this works on, the workaround is to tap the connect button an extra time AFTER your call has disconnected and the headset has signalled that to you. That closes the BT audio channel and effectively resets everything so that it's ready for the next time you need to invoke MSVC from your headset.

Finally - you should be aware that NOT all BT Headsets seem to work well in this scenario. The Moto HS850 is one of the ones known to work this way, and the Cardo Scala also has been reported to work. I know that a few others have as well, but I'm not sure which ones (you can search the forum for more info). Best to be sure FIRST that your intended headset will work with MSVC, or you may be wasting $60 to $100 on something incompatible.

BTW: Not sure, but the the BT version may be a factor -- e.g., BT 1.1 vs 1.2...

You cannot get to the registry folder as easy as you would using a table top pc's run/regedit, which would give u the registry. Unfortunately WM5 devices are not so simple. You would need a regeditor found in many online stores. I use Kilmist editor found here, http://www.jcvlending.com/maddogx007/html but you can also find others just about anywhere like handango.com or pocketgear.com. Good luck.

Total commander works good too. Its free, and you can get to the registry and edit with it. As well as having an FTP. Wish I would have known all of this before bying resco, lol. Oh well live and learn.

Jonazen gave u valuable information. We tested this to death on this thread. It's not that no one wants to help, but we drilled this to death, kid you not. I personally posted a dozen posts about this topic alone including remedies like BTSoundOn Utility. Jonazen and I plus anyone involved at that time, gave much input on this matter. It's hard to sit and type in detail the findings, and expect someone to just do it all over again, but I will help you, if possible.

I posted many remedies for MSVC and BT headsets. The bottom line is this.. My older Motorola H700 newest Motorola kid on block, would not work with hack and connect button. Thus I used a remedy called BTSoundOn. Other BT headsets that do work, in additional to what Jonazen gave you, are the Motorola H500, and Jabra BT150.

I tried seaching for you on what I hve posted with HOFO, but not simple to screen. For the most part MSVC does not support BT Headsets, and this has been an ongoing discussion beat to death here. Want to learn more, here is a link from Windows Mobile Team Blog dedicated to this issue with some of my posts there too, and my resolve with BT headsets that can't use the connect button. http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile.../03/524289.aspx

BTSoundOn is a great utility cause you can assign it to a button on device to initiate MSVC. As Jonazen said, the issue is in releasing the call after a session with MSVC, but BTSoundOn initiates sound over BT. BTSoundOn is a wonderful tool to have for any reason on your device. If you want to play games over BT in private office, etc... Again you can find it here, http://jcvlending.com/maddogx007/index.html

But the best solution for me so far is, the H500 BT headset. The H700 ended up as a gift to my son-in-law who does not use MSVC on his BT Cell phone. The reason the H500 works for me, cause you can use MSVC hack, and connect button works on 2nd try, sometimes 3rd, not a perfect science, but works without messing with device. I hope they resolve this in future OEM, as well as A2DP cause I have tested the Tornado cab file and the HT820 stereo headsets to death, which also work with MSVC connect button. Good Luck bro. The best thing to do is just ask questions as you try something out.

Another pathetic question, but I was in the market for an FTP. Glad u mentioned that. But where is the FTP feature of commander?

And wht do u think of this new RUU upgrade to 2.2 or something? Is it worth it from 2.17? For more RAM I will give it a try.

I downloaded it for safekeeping, and might get around to trying it. But as I recall, it's the same radio and OS as in our 2.17 version, so those parts won't change (not positive, but pretty confident this is right as per xelencin's posts on xda-developers.com).

Part of the reason to try it would be that he's worked on making this version tighter and cleaner than the 2.17 install, and reportedly you wind up with more available working memory than with the 2.17 install. Again - this is off the top of my head, no 100% positive, but pretty sure this is right.

What I'd really like to do is learn how to make my own CAB's and custom ROM installers with all my own favorite software...

alright so i got my MDA about 2 weeks ago and decided to buy a sandisk 1gb mini sd....so i put all my programs such as; spb backup, spb weather, spb pcoket plus, agile, opera web browser, and a few games.....and i have them all installed on the storage card which is great....

The thing is my MDA is still running slow....sometimes someone will call me and it will juss freeze and i wont b able to answer the phone or anything and then i have to soft reset it....i noticed that my program memory is the standard 44.08mb and i usually have about 20mb free....i was wondering if there was anyway to move some memory from my storage card in order to help the programs run smoother....or if theres any other way that i can speed this baby up or at least not have it crash at least once every day sometimes twice....i have the opac overclocking program and i use it sometimes but then forget to start it again after my mda goes on stand by and it resets to its default 180mhz....

One other thing that happens is out of no where a windows sync screen will appear stating the last time i synced my pc with the MDA and then wont allow me to do nutting else the screen juss freezes up.....its annoying and happens often....anyway i can turn this off??....

IF anyone has similar problems or has ideas or a solution to any of these problems i would greatly appreciate it if they would assist me in this.....thanx

If you hit the \ it will take you to your root directory. The double tap the \\ at the top of that list and you will get to the ftp, lan and registry folders.

As far as 2.2. I did a quick read about whats new with it. It seamed like all he did was changed some of the extended rom files. I may be wrong on that. Im fine with 2.17 and the 1.12 radio rom.

Thanks on FTP. I think your right bro. I just got off and read every post concerning the 2.2. I just don't feel it's enouph to jump off 2.17.

On another note. Remember when I tested the HT820 to death with the Tornado cab file A2DP. Well I was at the XDA site and this guy responded to my experiment, and said, "I believe there are issues with the moto HT820. They apparantly only work well when either direct connected or bluetooth connected to another motorola device. As supporting evidence for this hypothesis, the HP iPaq/Logitech bluetooth headphones work great with the tornado A2DP patch".

I think Im going to try another Stereo Head setup and the Tornado A2DP. But got to figure out where to buy the logitech, like from cirtuit city, or comp usa, incase this guy's theory is wrong, I don't want to get stuck with them, but worth a 2nd try before u buy again.

Thanks on FTP, would not have looked there. Not as simple configuration as I have experienced with other FTP programs, but worth trying to get on my FTP for FREE!

Update: Like a fool I did not have the wi-fi turned on. When I did it was easy to configure, and flew into my ftp!!

The guy Im talking to on XDA about the A2DP is using a Cingular 8125 (Wizard), and the Qtek Rom. But same tornado and he said the HP Stereo Headphones are available at Comp USA with 21 day return policy.

First of all, if I have learned anything about the MDA is this. It's all a trial n error. Many of us here have tried many different configurations. I personally do not experience any problems with my phone. On the contrary I may have other issues, like needing more ram, or that my back light defaults to 10Sec, but my phone works like a charm, and my MDA freezes rarely.

So if I were u, I would go back to basics. I would cold boot device, and re load all my apps over again, but this time try one or two at a time, and see if MDA does not freeze up on you, especailly twice daily, that is weird. Cause if this continued for you, hate to say this, cause I just had my own scare with battery dead, but could be issue with ur MDA. Cause this is unsuall for this device. I would also consider upgrading to the ROM 2.17, but that's personal.

In computers my bro, when in doubht go back to basics. Trouble shooting is a process of elimination. Does ur MDA freeze up with nothing but factory Ext Rom?. If no! Then re-load your stuff one by one. You have 40 MB's of ROM, not sure why some many people are concerned about using it. Apps like Spb Pocket Plus, Spb Diary, Spb Weather, Tweak2k2, reg editors, anything that requires a key or registration, or configuration, is great candidate app for my ROM. Once you get it together, make image backups with ur Spb backup which includes everything in your ROM. I am a big believer of Spb Backup bro. This way when all goes well, but then it freaks out on you, you have a perfect image of when all worked great! With all your keys to software, device configuration. About the only darn thing I have to do, if I restpre a self extracting file from Spb Backup, cause the beauty is, you don't have to load Spb backup to restore, the only work I ever have to do is enter a new PW on device, other wise, my hacks are all there, everything. So try something different.

That's the reason I would try it, for more working memory. After soft reset, I only get 16, sometimes 17MB, depending on the weather I think (j/k). After FreeUp RAM, I only get 1MB more. I'm thinking of trying the 2.21, then varying the order that I install software.

Re the radio, it's the same as in 2.17; but the OS is 2.21.4.1 vs 2.17.7.2 in 2.17 (although I don't know if that means much!)

I got it as well, but frankly after reading the posts, not sure I want to go from 2.17 to 2.2. I really want TMO to get of their hinee and get the official upgrade. Cause Im curious as to what they will do. will they include A2DP, will they change the Ram leaks? One fact is certain, they are a billion dollar research company, and I am sure they are spending moolah getting an official ROM together, someday, which is the only frustration.

Im not quite sure Im conviced of that. Cause if you read all the posts for the 2.2 some people are claiming 20MB's after upgrade. Well on a good day, playing around with MDA I may get 20MB. I would be happy if that was a consistent number, cause I am not convinced that is determined by the 2.2. I believe it's determined by what you have installed, and in what order, what configuration. I mean I can remove WA2 and get 2 mgs back. The only solution for me is a device with 128MB RAM, not another ROM upgrade. Unless TMO comes up with big changes in future official ROM. I would be a believer, cause like u I boot up with 18 or less, started out this week great, but something again is eating up my memory. I would be happy with 20MB free after soft reset consistantly.

On 3rd day now with no reset - lots of calls, texting, 3 spb weather refreshes, many activesyncs, some web browsing, some photos. Down to 11.3MB though. Still pretty zippy though, even with Wisbar Advance 2 running (using a light weight skin). Running FreeUp RAM now -- but it will probably take a solid 5 mins at this point, and probably return about 1500k. So I'm close to doing a reset soon.

If the OS really is a new version, then I think I'll try it. MS tends to fix memory leaks in newer versions, so this might be a worthwhile upgrade just for that.

EDIT: FreeupRAM gave back about 2mb, but I was still at just under 13mb...so I reset. Started out with 19.3mb and I'm running freeup ram once more to see if I can push it over 20mb as a starting point...

OOPS! Weird result with Freeup RAM right after book. LESS memory than before running it! Now down to about 17.95... NOT what I had in mind. Oh well. I'm done for tonight...

Yeah, I'm not sure I'm convinced either.

I think you're right on the install order and the configuration. Last hard reset, I loaded MSVC before anything else because I was going to be driving all day--and I think that was a mistake for memory use. Since my first backup was right after that, I figure I might as well try the 2.21 since I have to go back to square one anyhow, if I'm going to correct the install order.

I'd be happy any time with 20MB after a soft reset! And without anything running except phone calls and email alerts, I'm down to 11 or 12 in a couple of hours, 9 or 10 in 4 hours without a reset.

Man, I'm talking myself into starting from scratch again!

News for the 2.2 arena.

Well troops, after all my posts here today concerning the 2.2 Rom. I was on my way to bed, and got very frustrated that my device is soft resetting at less then 14MB, tonight just over 13Mb of Ram. SKRam Up has been helpfull, but not enouph to get me back to 16 or so. After than battery crash I had, I got things working so nice, with Spb Pocket Plus and diary on tabs, but something lately is eating my RAM up seriously! So I decided to upgrade my ROM again from 2.17 to 2.2. Not for any other reason than I hope it will give me a consistent RAM number, especially around 20MB if possible. So I am re installing everything in different order too. Which me luck boys..

The upgrade went well, and I even CID unlocked again. Not sure if I had to, but RUU did not ask me or give me option. I figured go for it. Anyway reboot ok, and just loading WA2 first this time. I will post again my results tomorrow.

Update on Rom 2.2

Already my results are not terrible encouraging. I cold boot device with 2.17, after EXT ROMs, RAM was at 26.37. I ran 2.2 upgrade and after EXT ROM, RAM was just a little better at 26.64MB. Remember I have not installed anything yet.

ROM is at 43.35MB FREE but I did not record the figure with 2.17.

I just bought the MDA today from http://www.howardforums.com/wirele...CFTKJCwodJGWD-w, got it for $250 but they gave me $325 back, so I made $75. Kinda nice. I had to sign up for the $29 data plan, but only for 4 months. Phone suppose to be here on Thursday.

Looking forward to learning all the ins and outs of this phone. Sounds like a lot of capable people hang out here. Currently have the Treo 650 with Verizon, but really unhappy with the new 700p (crippled by Verizon), so jumped ship to T-Mobile.

I'm running the oem rom and after a soft reset I start the day with about 21mb of ram... during the day I mught use the calculator(for work), check email with tmobile fake push, make some calls, play a couple of games, check HOFO for updated post, and that's about it- by end of 10hr day down to about 15mb, use skram and boost me back up to about 18mb, today for some weird reason ram dropped down to bout 12mb but mda still ran smooth, just sof reseted after clearing cache and skram and now back to about 20mb... PIE sucks your ram down I've noticed, so does opera...

Well finally a man that makes sense. Ofcourse I paid 415 for mine, but had it way before anyone else could get it from TMO. Your in good hands with HOFO here. I haven't had a conract for 4 yrs from TMO. But you made out, I like T-Mobile, just hate contracts.

What I don't understand is why you wouldn't just do a hard reset and then not install anything ... run the device for a couple days on a flat ROM and see how the RAM reacts. If the memory leak persists, then you know it's in the OS and not your apps.

If the leak goes away, load your most important program next. Run it for a couple of days, and if you're still good, load the next important. This will help isolate what's causing the leak. Trust me, all of the "must have" software people have on their phone is anything but. You'd be surprised what you'll live without when you figure out it's got a memory leak in it.

Rom 2.2 update ***News***

So far I can't say I have noticed a tremendous difference between th 2.17 and 2.2 ROM. But if I can keep the Ram consistent I will be very happy with upgrade. I am trying to restore my device when time permits, like juggling apples.. But so far I have loaded, in this order, WA2, MSVC, Spb Pocket Plus, Spb Diary, Tray Launcher and Spb Weather, Spb Backup. All in ROM. I feel these are very important to my daily routines now and are the biggest memory hoggers. Plus I don't want to hassle re loading them, so they will be in my 1st new Spb Backup self extract image.

WA2 took almost 3MB's to load. I started at over 26, by time WA2 loaded it saw just over 22. I started first by loading Tweak2k2 to hack registry with things like "Don't Delete my Cab Files", when happy removed Tweak2k2.

So far my soft resesets are a little higher then 19MB's, but with SKRam UP Im getting consistently 20.5MB. I also noticed every icon I place with Tray Launcher MB's reduce a little, this can add up with 10 icons. So I may just be placing those icons in TL I really use, like commander, OmapClock, etc.

I can't say for sure yet, but noticed when i close an app, I get back the 20.5MB's. Before with 2.17 I got back some but not all. Not sure if this is cause it's new install, or what, but will keep my eye on it now seriously. Cause I was down with 2.17 to 13MB on soft reset, and sometimes 17. And as Jonazen, and I3onk now me, I have gone through many cold boots to get my device looking the way I want, and have successfully done that even with 2.17, but weird things happen with MDA and RAM.

I know somethings may leak, but what I have I need to use now.. Well see..

anyone kno a way to either transfer all my contacts to my sim card?? or move them all in a bunch to my pc?? beacuse im going to hard reset it and start all over....even though ihad a backup.....i can see when i explore the mda from my activesync that theres a file called msn contacts in a database folder but i cant figure out a way to copy it or move it out.....if someone knows a easy way for me not to have to individually have to program ppls numbers and names back into the phone after the hard reset i would appreciate any help......thnx

MadDog - very interested to follow your experience over the next few days. The initial numbers aren't all that exciting, since the free mem with 2.2 seems to be about the same as it is with 2.17. But...I got really interested when you noted that when you killed an application ALL your memory was recovered. If that's consistent, that's a huge (though subtle perhaps) improvement. I don't know if the OS version with 2.17 has a slow ongoing leak, or if it just leaks ever time we open and close apps - not recovering all allocated memory each time. Either way - if the OS version in the 2.2 ROM is better at holding onto memory and recovering it after apps are closed, that will really improve the overall experience.

I suspect there are other subtle improvements in the OS as well. Microsoft has done this for years with Windows on the PC -- new releases, patches, updates, etc, generally address MANY issues, and nagging problems in the OS often disappear with little or no fanfare. For example: I love my logitech MX5000 bluetooth keyboard and mouse -- but until about 2 months ago, it would take Windows several minutes (and much futzing on my part) to reconnect with the keyboard and mouse after a reboot. Sometime around 8 weeks ago, one of the "windows updates" must have addressed the cause of this problem - because it suddenly stopped occurring -- now the keyboard and mouse connect instantly on boot up. I've seen these "background fixes" many times over the years with Windows for the PC, and I have every reason to believe that MS does the same with WM5. THAT is why I'm ready to try out 2.2 if it seems stable -- it probably has a number of subtle fixes in place that will contribute to a more stable system -- and if the memory management really is better, that ALONE makes the upgrade worthwhile.

If you already have contacts, etc in your OutLook, you can just re-sync and all the contacts will be transferred to your phone. The main thing that you need to worry about is if you have any other files (excel, word, etc) on your phone. That needs to be moved to your PC or MiniSD card before hard reset.

ok... i understand what your saying but I'am not sure how to sync my current contacts on my phone to my pc....in activesync i do have "contacts" syncronized but where is it located on my pc?? any ideas??....thnx for your help liamtoh1

If you've properly sync'd your contacts, they'll be in your Outlook contacts list. You don't have to worry about where they are on your PC because when you resync, you'll automatically get them all back again.

thnx....but still not working....in activesync i sync my pc and contacts and it shows contacts at the bottom of it......but yet still no contacts in outlook...i dunno what I'am doing wrong...can someone help?

Posted by: nyvram

Are you *sure* you have your sync settings properly configured to update the contacts on your PC? I know it gives you several options in the configuration regarding what it does when syncing. You might have accidently told your phone to not update the contacts on the PC.

I'm out a couple of days again and miss soooo much!
I got bad news though and a question. I eradicated the partition with everything I had apps, games, ROMs, Back-ups, etc. now I have nada. The question is can I back-up my current settings, apps, etc. and then re-load them after I do the ROM upgrade? I can't believe there's another one out now! MadDogX007 as always providing good reviews...kudos for that!

I actualyl wouldnt advise it. Last time I tried that, my device froze on me and had to do a hard reset. May have just been with the combo I was doing though. You can try it, hey the worst that happens is you do another hard reset right? lol

Posted by: i3onk

Well Just downloaded and installed the latest version of AEButton plus. Much better now. Alot more functionality. Much more and much better button mapping options. Glad I payed for that one.

For those of you who haven't checked it out yet:

http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php

And for those of you who are sick of looking at the plain white keyboard.

http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/fo...read.php?t=5519

Some keyboard skins.

I'm not a great advocate of Activesync. I do un-attended backups 3 times weekly using Spb Backup for contacts, email, and my documents only. I just upgraded to 2.2 and used my old 2.17 self extract file to get my contacts, emails, and my documents restored. You can use both, and it's probably a good idea, but I don't rely just on activesync for anything. Your computer could go bunkers too. I'm a paranoid backup guy.

Final update NEWS on 2.21 upgrade ROM.

Well after installing all my goodies, I mean everything any human would want to make their device look and feel more like windows should have, I feel comfortable saying that I am getting consistently over 18-over19MB's on soft reset, after using SKRam UP just slightly over 20MB's, but that goes up and down between 19.5 - 20.3. The interesting observations, when I shut down an app, my ram goes up not down, like it used to with 2.17. And so far I have not seen my RAM go down below 18.5 even after using many applications and shutting them down. Again every little thing takes away from RAM, like Tray Launcher icons, so I used less. But was surprises after Spb Weather that I still got good RAM.

Is the 2.21 ROM worth upgrading from 2.17? It depends on your situation. I was actually doing fine with 2.17 in my last restore after my battery death, but for reasons not sure, started to leek RAM big time just a week later.

So far I have noticed with 2.2 that the RAM stays consistent all day, not matter what I use, and believe me Im used everything today, and i have reset a dozen times or so testing RAM. Even with hours of no use, my RAM was still over 18.5 MB's. I would love just to see device stay around 18 or so consistently!

I know some of you have said, that even at 12MB's your device still runs good, I agree , it did for me too, but I have a couple of apps and games that require min 16MB's to run, and I would like to know I can run them without soft resetting.

Is there any other big changes with the 2.2? Not really! Not sure what this guy Xcelcin or what ever really does with these Rom upgrades. Does he just fiddle around with EXT Rom's and hacks, or does he actually get into code with Boot loader, and OS? Not sure. But I believe I am booting a bit faster. Is this a figment of my imagination cause I reloaded everything all over again? Not sure, but time will tell

I changed my skin a bit, used some of the buttons from my last skin, and messed around a little with the sound and gave myself a whole new 2.2 look. Here it is..

Over all Im happy I did it , cause I feel more stability, but that could change in the coming week, hope Im wrong, it's stable and RAM is consistent. I will be a happy campter for a while.

Wow this is awesome!! I was just in in conversation with my 15 yr old who wanted to donwload some TMO rings for 2.99 each. I told her use allofmp3.com to get the songs from 311 she wants, for 15 cents a song, or a little more, and I will manage to get an mp3 editor to get u the ring tone.

And here you are bro with a great product!! I downloaded it, and it took me a total of 3 minutes to pull up an Mp3 and edit a 1 min ring version.

Wow!

Not sure what you need, but here is what I did. I downloaded the 1.3 beta, it installed easily on PC, then opened up an Mp3 file that is 9 min long, and selected an area of the file, then used Export as Mp3, feature under file. It required another file that Audacity did not have called: lame_enc.dll
I downloaded file immediately from : http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/...se_mirror=jaist, and bingo got new mp3 with 1 min song.

Beautiful bro

Well Bro, If all you say works true for me, then I may be able to go back to WA2. Backing up my device right now. I will flash the rom, then see if I can install the backup to it. If not, then i will have to go through the whole reinstall process again. Man (Sad to say) I am actually not looking forward to doing that.

What WA2 skin is that? I wasnt able to use the mettaloid .

I second that...where did you get the cool skin, Maddog? I like that one as well and would love to know where you got it.

I did restore my contacts, emails, and my documents, which was the most important things with a phone, but was going to try restoring my last goog backup with 2.17, but got tired bro. Not a bad idea to try though?. Just remember, Im not sure again, what files they worked on or not, who knows.

Sweet man thanx.

On a SWEET note. I just got done flashing to the new ROM. WOW! I used my 2.17 backup, which needless to say made me happier than heck. Hate having to reinstall the god knows how many apps I have.

At boot up, 21.82M of RAM. That is already an apporximatly 1.5M of RAM increase on bootup. Granted that was the first boot after restoring. Im going to restore a couple more times right now and see if that will be the norm.

Update: OK After 4 more reboots, I am averaging 21.9M at startup me happy. Guess I can try WA2 again, and maybe even try out WAD. Who knows hehe.

Remember when I tried WA2 it went down 2mgs or so, but well worth it bro. Cause now you may get a more stable ram environment.

Hey on another note, you learn something everyday in HOFO's MDA hacks. This guy above posted an app called "Audacity". Awesome Bro! I am collecting a bunch of MP3 rings right now. The coolest thing is, you can highlight the part of the MP3 u want, 30 Sec. Then Export Selection as MP3, then open up new selection, highlight the beginning, use menu "effects" Fade in, highlight a little of the end and use Fade out, and bingo my Bro Professional music ring tones. I love this.

You and Jonazen and anyone else of course, has got to check it out for ring tones. Why pay! And with http://www.allofmp3.com entire cd's cost $1.01, individual MP3's are like 15 cents, 30 cents, etc.. I know this allofmp3.com is a bit contraversial, Jonathen and I read some of the critics and conflicting laws on them, but they are from Russia, and seem very legit. They have been trying to screw them for years and can't. I do pay bro! But for 10 bucks I get a ton of music. And now Rings!

Thx for the reports on 2.2 -- I'm definitely going to give it a try when I have some time. The extra memory and stability will make it worth the effort. I've been on the edge re: WA2, and it sounds like 2.2 will make it comfortable to keep, which makes me very happy. I REALLY miss it when I turn it off.

Also really like the skins you're using and the other two on your site. Think when I do this, I'll probably go for a complete reinstall of apps instead of trying to restore from one of my 2.17 backups. I'm afraid that even if the rom versions "line up", the restore will probably restore extra unnecessary sections of the registry and "grew" during the last couple of months using 2.17, installing and uninstalling junk. I'd rather have the registry be as clean as possible.

Looking forward to this, and as i3onk notes, this may even make it reasonable to consider WAD as well as WA2.

Posted by: nyvram

Amen Jon! I'm with you. I fear the registry & would just rather reinstall everythign..although I'm starting to grow quite a collection at this point and it takes awhile now to get everything going again.

Hold off on the restoring of your old backup Jona. I am having a popup come up on my saying cant execute windows\timewizard.exe. I have no clue what that Is. I need to figure it out first.

Update: Well timewizard.exe is part of the old ROMs and not a part of 2.1. I cant extract timewizard from the old ROMs so either I stick with 2.17 or go ahead with a total install of all apps. Man talk about a major pain.

Posted by: i3onk

Man I would really love to know hwo to write a cab file to write all the reg hacks I use. That would save me SOOOOOOOOOO much time.

Also, audacity is pretty cool. I actually used it to convert all of my dads old records to mp3 files on his PC. Then burn them to CD for him to listen to in his truck.

I just use mp3cutter for al my ringtone needs. Havnt tried audacity yet, for that purpose.

That's the kind of difference I was afraid of, like Nyvram. There are probably references in the registry that are making WM5 try to execute timewizard, and it either doesn't exist in the new one, or it's in a different place (dir). There may be a lot of odds and ends that don't line up between 2.17 and 2.2 just like that, unfortunately.

I've got a load of stuff that would have to be reinstalled, and I'm not looking forward to it either. That's one of the reasons I'm holding off right now.

In the meantime, though - just took a look at my MDA this morning - it was down to about 9mb available - so I'm highly motivated to find a solution to the memory leaks. Sounds like 2.2 will be a help in this area -- going to give it a try when I have a chance.

I checked out these skins for KB. It seems there is a cab file that needs to be initially installed, like with E-Ten dialer, then you can change skins all day long. But the cab file that changes some registry keys, etc., they are referring too, the link, is bad. That is exacly the reason I created my ftp site to keep stuff that sooner or later has broken links and becomes frustrating to download. Im working on putting all those KB Skins on my ftp site, but still looking for the cab file to first install and try this out.

Lord knows what I"m doing to the stability of the device...

definitely addictive. Synched my schedule this morning, had all appts. used yahoo to get directions, listened to music on way in this morning, listening now while chattin here on HoFo. Also texting my son who just got home from school. Way slick. Extras like WA2, skins, eten, are all extra icing on an amazing little device...

Today I went down to a little less then 15mb ram, and only make and recvd calls, hope this is not a sign on 2.2?

I know this phone can be addictive. I actually mess around with this phone more than any other ppc i have ever owned, and I have owned many, plus some sony clie 's that i still having laying around. I still have some older Palm devices laying around too. What can I do with them? I keep them around in case some sad looking student friend of family may need one for contacts or something.

I still have my old CLIE PEG-N710c. Was once the top-of-the-line hot sexy PDA. Screen is color, and big, but nothing compared to today's screens. Nice Palm-based system, but also limited in upgrade capability because the need for a proprietary version of the Palm OS, so it's now stuck in the past. Was also one of the first you could use as an MP3 player too. Trying to convince other family members to use it, but there's only lukewarm interest right now. Don't think it has much of a future here!

Yeah - MDA is fun. Really enjoyed it today up to NYC, all around town and back on the train. Was very cool at one point using TCPMP to play tunes, trading text msgs with my son -- earlier I was listening to TCPMP and browsing HoFo at the same time. Too cool! Even wound up using yahoo to check directions a couple of times for appts (which were, of course, in pocket outllook). Amazing to do all of this WELL in one little device.

Still have to get the buttons and config tweaked. For example: I was in the options pages of TCPMP and assigned the two soft-key buttons to be Next and Prior song buttons for the playlist -- very nice, except that it seems to have modified the settings for these buttons OUTSIDE TCPMP as well (ugh!). NOT what I had in mind! So -- some work still needed...

Re: your memory issue: I continue to find that memory (as well as battery of course) is eaten when I used bluetooth. Did you have it one today with 2.2? I'll bet that's a factor...

Intersting thought. Cause I lost the BT in my suit pocket, and just found it, so your right, used it today all day. Interesting.

I know I had bought two Clies the Peg NR70/U with swivel monitor, and another, for like 900 bucks for both when they came out, 128MB memory card, which I still use with my Sony digital camera. I gave the Peg NR70/U to my son in law, and he returned it a while back. Imagine that!

My house is a house of technology, although I hve been a little hessisitant with HDTV, just like you been in to tech for decades, since little kid I hve been fuzzing around with stuff. I was the first guy in California to actually receive a simulcast of a movie Cleopatra over radio and TV. I remember i was one of the first guys who used a dolby digital system from a science magazine. My wife once bought me a beautiful minuture RCA color TV 20 years ago, top of the line, another swivel type paid small fortune for it, eventually I broke it trying to figure something inside. When I was a kid, I used to open up the am radios, they never lasted. The first time I ever checked out a computer was with a 286 system. I opened it up, said, hmmm, took everything out of it, laid it all in front of me, like puzzle, and said, hmmm, then put it back together and said, I could put build this.. hmmm, like that new movie the nanny, hmmmm.

Does anyone know of a product like caller2picture for contacts like we have on MDA, which i can't find anywhere anymore, for my wifes iPaq so that she can see my beautiful face when I call her and hear. Is there something else available with ring tone assignments for her?

I got to figure something out, cause she drulling over my MDA.

Weird MDA problem. After a soft reboot for some time when I slide out the keyboard the screen re-adjusts as it should from portrait to landscape. Other times it will stay at portrait when I slide it out. Any ideas why?

What programs are u talking about bro? I'd kill for a consistent 20MB RAM, and I have everything but the kitchen sink loaded on my device.

Movies? Just google it, great way to find out. Follow the yellow brick links.. http://www.pockettv.com/

I have had this issue a couple of time. I had installed a couple of apps. One was a game. table tennis I believe, and another was an app that i cant remember the name of. After installation my storage dropped down to under 6M. Even after uninstalling I wasnt able to get the memory back without a hard reset and a restore. I installed these at totally different times, a month or so apart. Each time I tried it I got the same result. Check out the last app you installed. That may be what caused the problem.

Ok. What are the real benefits of upgrading to the 2.17 ROM and will it wipe out everything on my device (I use Spb backup).

I have my BT on all the time. I have tested it with it off and havnt really noticed any difference. What I think may be a cause, activesync. I have noticed various times during the day that activesync was running in the background. Seams to come on and off by itself. I am wondering if this may be a cause of some leakage.

hard and soft restores? how exactly do you do these things? are there programs, apps, games, editors, color schemes, etc etc out there that are free and easy to use if so can u please let me see some. also ne lil tips and lil things that can make my experince better please post. its for the good of all of use. lol thanks again

ActiveSync definitely eats memory...I've seen this many times when I've started with a lot of free mem, plug in USB cable, watch ActiveSync run, and then find significantly less memory left.

Haven't noticed it running during the day when I'm untethered, but it might be in the background. Doesn't show in the Wisbar task mgr -- but I actually think Wisbar might be set to ignore it and not show in that list. So it COULD be the answer. Maybe I can take ActiveSync off the Wisbar ignore list and try to watch for it.

Re: BT - who knows? Maybe it's the fact that I turn it on and off several times a day that eats memory...

Have you read the MDA FAQ? There are also over 3,000 posts in this thread alone -- MANY with excellent tips, tricks, techniques, suggested programs, screen shots, peoples' experience, etc. There's LOADS of info here. Please look around some first before asking everyone to post it all again...there really is a LOT of good stuff already here...

As Jona said, there are many pages worth of great info in this thread and the FAQ thread. Using the search is a great way to find the info you are looking for. I will help you with a couple of important things, but as far as the apps and schemes, those are things you will have to explore for yourself.

A hard reset is basically reformatting your device back to the out of box condition it was in when you purchased it. Everythign added and installed after you bought it will be gone. To do a hard reset you either go to start\settings\system\clear storage. Or you can hold the comms amnager button and the voice record button at the same time while hitting the reset button next to the IR lense. Keep the two buttons help down until you get the black screen asking if you want to reformat. At that time you release the buttons and hit the green phone button.

A soft reset is simply rebooting the device. There are two methods of doing this. The safest way is to just hold the power button down until you get the popup and hit yes. The other is to hit the little button right next to your IR(infrared) lense.
We are here to answer any questions you have about the device, but some things are just best left to find out for yourself, ie...themes, apps and games.
A good place to go for your apps and games though is http://www.handango.com

I know that reading through 200+ pages of posts seams like alot, but trust me when I say, almost any question you have has been answered. Either by Myself, Jona, Maddog, trooper, alex and a few others whos names I forget right now ( Sorry guys) hehe.

That could be it Jona. I just always leave mine on. I do all my calls via BT. Just flip open the headset and they are answered, hit the button and voice dial. Hell the only time I use the dialpad is when calling the bank to get account info lol.

OK Well, Im doing 2.21 now. Will let you guys know how it goes over the next couple of days. This is going to be a long night. Have alot of crap to install and setup. Going to try a couple new things too. Different install process, not so many voice dial contacts. Going to search the registry for activesync too. Maybe I can shut that damn thing off until i need it.

Ok guys, these KB skins are supposed to work. I havent tested them yet, but will after my installas are done. You need to register first to get to the downloads. Jona you might like these too. There is a Black and White marble KB skin

You are the master of the MDA! I'm still debating whether to go to 2.21, 2.17 seems to be working okay, I'll be checking your threads to see how it goes.

Well, so far I have a boot up RAm of 22.15M. Man thats sweet This is without WA2 installed. Everything else is up and running though. I have also cut my boot up time in half, from almost 3 minutes to about 1.5 minutes,

Posted by: ilvla2

Well, I decided to take the Nestea Plunge again, I'm re-installing stuff now, and doing some registry hacks (ie.to disable the roaming indicator) but so far, it is AWESOME!!

Posted by: ilvla2

As if a techie like me needed a reason to put something new on my Toy aka the MDA lol I got everything reinstalled, took less than an hour and a half, runs better than ever, woo hoo!

Posted by: i3onk

At one point last night right before bed, I have 23.11M of ram available. I know that was a fluke and not the norm, but it was damn nice to see that number lol.

Sounds good! So - the install went smoothly? Is it necessary (recommended?) to do a sim-unlock first on a T-Mobile MDA for this version of the ROM? If so, can it be done with 2.17 installed, or would I have to drop back to the stock TMo ROM first?

Ready to try this, as I'm getting tired of memory leaks. Just sorta dreading all the time I'll be spending on it, as I REALLY don't have lots to spare.
