Yes. However you are not sure then try www.dslreports.com/mspeed from your device and try the 300k test. View your result to verify that you are in fact using EDGE.

yes however some proxy settings are needed.
I use the $19.99 blackberry plan and it has worked since day one with no problems at all.

by the way your username seems very familiar...do you frequent Solecollector or ISS by any chance?

Is there a program I can get that will let me know if I'm connecting via EDGE or GPRS? I know Cingular's version of the MDA displays and "E" when it's Edge instead of a constant "G"

Hello all -

I am just getting into customizing my TMobile MDA and would like to try to save valuable program memory - seems as though it's pretty thin as is!

Sorry, this question has probably been asked already , but couldn't find the answer easily...

What programs can be installed directly to the SD card, and how to I make the program install there vs internal memory? Also - is there any way to move programs already installed internally over to the SD in order to free up program memory?

anything can be installed to the sd card. Some apps wont work from the sd card though. To move an app to your sd card, you will need to uninstall it and reinstall it tot he sd card. when you go to install an app, you will get an option to install to the device or the sd card. This is providing you have the sd card in the slot.

hi, i just got my mda last week, i love the phone. the problem is that when i instill active sync on my laptop it wont let me install. its showing that i need a new version of windows or a new service pack version.. i have a windows xp pro. im also wondering if theres a way to get around active sync.. like dragging files into the sd chip. for the meantime i have to use my gf's sidekick 3 to put files in my 1gb sd.. thanks in advance

Never mind. Resco file explorer has a registry editor.However, I would like to know the steps involved in tethering my phone to my laptop and browsing using the Edge network. Is there a link to the instructions for how to o that?

okay got WA2 working... but is it me or does it sometimes cause the mda to lock up?
is there a way to find out how many soft resets you've done on the mda?
and everytime I try to get sktools systems tweak to set the folder that contains rings the folder on my storage card my mda locks up( is that because how many files I have in that folder?)
and if WA2 is gonna keep giving me problems I'm gonna save my 10 bucks + the 4.95 for each upgrade

Dont know how to help you with the sktools issue. I only use it to freeupram. As far as the WA2, just keep using the beta releasses and you wont have to pay for anything. I have been using WA2 since march and havent payed a dime. I dont have the freezing issue. I do know that if you access the windows directory it take a LONG time to see whats in it. The folders within the windows directory takes a while too. I dont know why it is freezing up on you though. Keep in mind, it is Windows. I do about 4-5 soft resets a day just to get the ram that I want. I know its a pain in the4 ***, just thank good ole Bill for that one.

I'm still on the oem rom waiting for the tmobile version rom update...
wa2 so far is pretty cool been trying to get it to run smoothly for the longest... but when my phone comes out sleep mode it seems like my mda is stuck on the white screen for almost aminute but it does unfreeze tho I notice but I been doin soft resets...

No, if you use the new beta releases, they dont have to be payed for. You only have to pay for the final releases. I have yet to pay for a version yet. Check the wa2 forums and look at the stickies somewhere up top and there should be new release info and downloads.

I also originally linked my phone to my aol account and received my emails through my phone. Then I did not want it anymore so i took off the account, but they still send me emails through text messages and I do not know why. Does anyone know how to stop this? Thanks

set up the account from the mda thru my email .... then go to aol and delete the pop3 access to your email to the mda... then go to mytmobile and delete the aol account from sending emails to mda... then go to mda and delete the account again

I have a question. when u put a mp3 ringtone on your mda is it as loud as when u play the song itself like with the the media player. Set as the ringtone its very low and i can barely hear it. Is this the same with everyone else or just me??

You need to go to options/edit chat service.

You will actually have to remove a chat service then readd the chat service with the new logon information.

Reading through this forum is your best place to get info for the MDA. There are about 6 of us who posted on here regularly about anything you need to know. I know there is alof of pages, but if you have an idea what you are looking for, just do a search of this thread to find what you want. Sorry couldnt be more help.

If i remember correctly, stereo bluetooth (A2DP) is available through a hack or reg edit, or rom update... How is this done again?? And is a rom update nessecary?? Or can i keep the OEM rom and do a reg edit to gain A2DP??

you can either:
1. install tornado a2dp addon (check smartphone forum, or go to aximsite.com, check mingkee's sig)
2. upgrade ROM to 2.2x (official is 2.26)

There are a few posts about keyboard skins in this thread. Unfortunatly they dont work for the MDA. If you want a KB skin, you can get resco keyboard. You can get it here...

Only the qvga skins will work for the MDA. You have to purchase resco kb after the trial expires, but at least you can check it out for a while to see if you like it.

I have Resco Keyboard on my MDA and LOVE it! Resco makes very good programs, I got their utility pack on Handango, it includes Explorer, Photo Viewer and Keyboard Pro for 34 (31 if you are a Club Handango Member)-

does anyone have the cab file for realplayer for mda - I tried downloading one off of realplayers website and the one that says pocket pc is the wrong version for the mda... I read on one thread that there was one that worked, tried that version and it didn't work...

But will it play RealAudio files? I don't see those extensions in the list of supported files. The local newspaper's website host the local NOAA weather station but it says you need Real Player to listen to it.

tcmp won't play realmedia files,. and opera mobile lets me download the files and I have to transfer them to my pc and then play it.... but I think they working on a version that plays on the mda

yes opera mini/mobile can be installed on mda... go to www.opera.com (opera.com) and choose download:then select wm5 devices and choose the opera download site from the site if you are using the mda to download it from...

nevermind the issue with gmail,I already fixed it ( had to go to gmail and enable the pop3 access, then go to my tmobile and add the email account and it works great now....

Keep in mind that by using that setup you are getting your emails at a delayed rate since the Tmobile servers have to fetch your emails, and then your MDA retrieves your messages from Tmob. A much better option is to upgrade to the latest rom, setup a free mail2web.com email account, connect your mda to that mail2web account, then log-in to your gmail.com account & have it fwd all your messages to that mail2web account. Using that method you will get your emails a lot faster, or instantly if you choose too.

I'm running the new 2.26 tmobile official rom ( not foolin with the custom ones yet) I have a mail2web, yahoo, gmail, hotmail, and I had a hotpop account emails sent to my phone.... I use each email address for different people.. don't want no junk on my mail2web account or hotmail....

another question I have is about wifi.. when using wife in my neighborhood it connects even though it has a week signal, but I used hitch hiker and it won't never connect unless I choose to connecf to the wlan and then about 2min later the connection is gone, and the tmo wifi app only disconnects if the signal just drops completely.. whatsup with that...

Try using WIFI companion. Its a great app. Wont kick you offline and lets you choose what connection to connect too without connecting you automatically.

I've been reading and i just want this confirmed by any1 who knows. i saw something that said when u IM it goes thru data service, so does this it isnt charged as a text message? like u wouldnt need a text messaging plan??

That is not totally true. It depends on the IM app you are using. OZ and built in IM apps counts towards text messaging. Agile, and I think IM plus, use the internet to send your IM's, therefore wont work unless you have a data plan. But will NOT count towards text messages.

On another note. I have been looking for a WORKING tv remote app for the MDA that uses the IR beam. After many many tials and failures, I have found one. Its is called NoviiRemote. You can get it here.

While it is not freeware, there is a trial. Its is the first and only remote app I have found that actually learns that buttons from you own remote by beaming it into the IR window. I am using teh deluxe version, but I am sure the classic will work just as well. I may actually have to purchase this app. After of course testing out the IR range limits of the MDA.

OK FOLKS ....... For all those who want real player I made it simple ..... I used the instructions found here and created a file so you can just put in your phone install and all works. There is a sfv checker file included to be sure integrity is correct . The file is 502k in size. It is located on my server. If you want to do it all yourself the original instructions are here at this link :::

Now for my instructions easy as follows :

1.) Download realplayer.rar from my ftp
2.) Unrar with winrar (which is free to try and free for pocket pc)

3.) move folder realplayer to your phone
4.) Execute RealPlayer.EXE on the phone, using File Explorer and click yes to all the warnings.
5.) Now Real Player is working ....
As per the page problems :

If you got an error message saying "file or url not found" follow these steps

* Open up smartexplorer
* go to File->Open->Manage File types...
* scroll down to .ra
* Menu->Edit file type
* ensure that the "command to execute" is something like "\storage card\program files\real\realplayer.exe" "%1"
* you need the quotes around the %1
* do the same for .rm

The menu works but u still cant stop the video.

I thought I had seen a posting about setting an alert in Pocket Outlook so that any time an email was received you would get an alert. As it stands, my MDA (TMO 2.26 ROM) seems to only notify if Outlook is not the active application. If my MDA is holstered, but outlook is on top I get no notification... Can anyone point me in the right direction. I would prefer not to use a third party message app to accomplish this, just a reg tweak or something like that.

if you go into settings/personal/sound and notifications, you can set a notification when you get a new email. I have 3 email accounts setup on my MDA, and I get a notification when any of them gets a new email message. If you get a new hotmail email though, it wont work.

Thanks, I have that set, but I don't get notification if Outlook is the active application. This is an issue if either I set down the device or holster it and Outlook is the active app, I won't have any idea that there is a new message until I happen to check....

yea, i didn't either until my bro, who has an sda, showed me that when he selects a certain profile on his sda, his phone automatically switches to silent/vibrate when there is an appointment thats set to "busy". When u think about it, it would be a very useful function cause then you wouldn't have to remember to set it to silent when u are at an appointment and be embarrased by a rap or rock song goin off in a meeting or class.

can someone help me out real quick... I'm trying to use the music files on my minisd card as ringtones without having to copy them to my mda internal storage... I got sktools but when it creates the rings folder it locks up my mda for a few minutes and when i put music files in the rings folder it still doesn't show the ringtones in the windows sounds options.... help me out.. and now all my notifications are high pitched like the chipmunks....
and I have the tmobile 2.26rom and now my notifications like alarm don't never go off because the phone has been getting memory sucked out of my phone everyday... I almost have to reset my phone every night b4 bed and in the morning in order to keep the memory running good... what's up with that

it depends on what I want to here at the time.. but I hate to have to delete the file and then reset the file..plus it takes away from my storage memory..
and dammit it lost my stylus earlier today so I had to order rone from daydeal.com
good thing they have free shipping on all accessories and no taxes... tmo stores don't stock mda stylus replacements In VA... that's some BS

Use a regular pen ... Works fine for me or a pencil .... Now as for the rngtones all you do is save the 4 or 5 you want to use on your memory and the rest on the card ... Then you change up as you fell ... So simple mate ...

I know you're asking about an MDA.. but on my SDA, I just copied the sounds files I wanted into the root directory of my storage card (So just /Storage Card/), and it worked for me.

I did the same thing just put music files in my root directory of the storage card and I thought invented the wheel...
its better than copying files to the mda, takes up to much memory unless you cut the mp3s up...
I have been noticing that the root directory of the storage card has limitations in size( I kept getting not enough storage space errors -while downloading files..)

I noticed that error when the device didn't have enough storage space... I think somewhere along the line I changed the registry to store temp files to the storage card, and I stopped getting that error.

that's not the same error... your root folder on your storage card has limitations on what can be "floating" in the root folder... now when I download files to storage card and that error comes up I just select a different folder on my storage card... I also deleted some unnecessary files from my storage card and replaced them with mp3 files ( added three new cds ) and deleted some porn...lol

since a lot of you guys want to do some crazy difficult stuff, i'll make it easy and ask 2 easy questions. how do you turn off the sound when you tap the start menu and open up folders? also is there any way to be able to choose between using your phone for outgoing calls or your bluetooth headset when the headset is connected? thanks

Ok ... You must have not even read the manual for the phone if you asking those questions. There is an option for sound ill let look in the book for that. And for the latter question you can click turn off handsfree ...

it really came with a welcome guide and quick start book. after playing with my phone i saw that i have to open up the menu in order to see the turn off hands free. you'd think with a phone with this many features it would be up to par with old sony ericssons i used to own that would automatically bring up the option when making each call

Why clog up the screen with optins you may not want at that moment . Most people dont like pop-ups ... But if you want it that way maybe you can find a reg tweak that will suit your taste ......

I have found that many features on this phone are accessed in places that make absolutely no sense. As for a user manual, I didn't recieve one. My MDA cam with two think books and ONE CD which contained the ActiveSync Software. As a longtime Blackberry/Palm user, my experience with handheld devices goes all the way back to the first PALM - when phone integration was a fantasy. No device I have ever owned had a decent owners manual. The owners manual always seems to cater to the "how do I create an calender item/email/dial a phone call" anything even remotely advanced like switching to a headset or turning event sounds on or off are never covered. I have searched through every menu/application I can find and I still can't find where to actually turn off system sounds like clicking on the start menu. I found where it appears you should be able to turn them off (settings/sounds), however there is no option there to turn off these sounds.

Ok ... I hear you .. Dont know where you brought ypours from but I got about 4 books and 2 cds with mines ... Ill help you with the sounds since you didnt get the books ..... the start button sound is controlled by the voulme button when you push the slide switch on the side.... The screen will show you 2 slides and the 1 on the left is for those sounds ... the screen tap is located in settings > sounds & notifications ... Any other questions ?????

But you can get all of your questions answered at HoFo!!

For volume, btw, you can also just tap the speaker icon.

I bought my phone from a TMobile store... I don't want to turn the volume down on those sounds. I don't want the event. If I turn the volume down I wont hear any system events (appts, calendar, phone ring, etc). If I'm in a meeting and need to open any application that doesn't have a hard/soft button, I really don't want the clicks happening (I don't care for them at any time to be truthful!

) Make sense? As far as I can tell there is no interface for turning off the start menu clicking. Two options I'm considering - replacing the existing wav with a blank one and poking through the registry - I'm sure either will work, I just haven't had time to spend on it. try this
use your stylus and click the little speaker icon on the top menu bar and slide the left slider down to the lowest but not to vibrate and leave the right slider at the top... it should work so that the phone still rings...
if not just put the freakin phone one vibrate...

When I had Verizon service, I could block an unwanted phone number, so it didn't ring or leave a voice mail. I read the manual, searched the T-Mobile site, but could find the setting to get this done. It is a very useful feature to block ex-wifes, old girlfriends, or junk voice mail.

I kinda fixed the problem.. had to call my voicemail and then delete the messages... then I sent a test voicemail message and then I got the notification...what kills me is that my voicemail notification always say 1 new message not 6 new messages which sucks...

Yes the MDA does support a 2G minisd card. I got mine from ebay for like $70. For another $6 i got a minisd/sd usb card reader. You can go here and check out all the 2G minisd cards that the have on ebay.

You wont be dissapointed in getting one. I have %95 of my apps installed to my card and still have 1.7G leftover for music and movies. That leaves me with plenty of room for my 19 ringtones and 12 message tones I have on my device. I still have 22M of storage memory on the device itself. Cant wait till they get a 4G minisd. I may try a 4G microsd when they release one with a card converter. Dont know if it will work but hey WTH, why not try it lol.

That should only turn off the screen taps. If its turning anything else off, you might want to start worrying LMAO j/k. You can also turn off the hardware taps to get rid of the tapping when you hit the buttons.

Well I use a 2gb card brought mines the 1st day I got the MDA .... Best thing to do is add a emory card and install apps games and misc there ... Many hacks in order to move your browser and other memory thats normally stored in phone.....

There are many ways .... easiest way is to convert the video to a format that your windows media plays on the MDA ...

I recently purchased the MDA for free on a 2 yr contract and i must say am pretty satisfied with it so far, from a sk2 to this, its great... to me even way better than the sk3 that my friend has... I have a query, I was going to get a internet plan with my plan but my friend told me I can get free internet using WIFI so by my house and at work i always get a connection so therefore I don’t need that internet plan from t-mobile saves me money, but I was planning to do that ROM update but my friend tells me with the new ROM update I wouldn’t b able to connect & get the internet free anymore cause t-Mo gone charge me is that true? And say i did wanted to update is there a way where i can save my text and MM messages to my card or transfer them to my pc do the upgrade and then transfer them back to my MDA?

Short answer for the first question is no. T-Mobile didn't break that functionality. With their latest rom 2.26, I can still connect to my home and work wifi access points just fine. Alot of people get confused wifi with T-Mobile hotspots. Wifi is free, T-Mobile hotspots aren't.

For the second, when you have it connected by usb and activesync, browse to your phone and look in the databases. You'll see quite abit you can copy to your desktop and then back after you loaded the new rom. But be warned that with upgrades, restoring databases can cause problems if they changed the database structures a touch between roms...

I'm tweaking my new MDA and added magic button. I have it set to autostart. I've noticed that it locks up after closing about 10 applications or so, consistently. When this happens, I have to soft reset. When it attempts to launch, I get an error message, something about not launching due to unknown author or needing to reinstall. I have reinstalled MB, but continue to get the same error on launch. I currently manually start MB and run without other issues until it locks up. Is there anyway to prevent the lockup or launch issues? I'm running the new ROM 2.26 and the new radio ROM 2.47. I also have Tweaks2k2 running. Thanks!

you create your own ringtones by using mp3 files(u can use your home pc to chop them up and shorten the mp3 file and then put the file in your root folder, or if you have minisd card save the file to the root folder on minisd card)
also use the SEARCH BUTTON IN THIS FORUM or READ THE LAST 150PAGES IT SHOULD BE THE ANSWER TO ALL YOUR WORRIES

ps.. not trying to be funny but if you start from page one in this thread you will find out some cool info

Since the Dash, MDA questions are just plainly ignored because most are switching over to the Dash........big deal!!

I don't know why the moderators decided to put the sda/mda and dash in the same forum other than just for categorizing purposes. Still, it sucks for MDA users because users are switching over and support will be dwindling down fast.

I propose that the sda/mda have its own forum again.

Dont mind my name...I have the MDA now, came from the sk2. Forget the monthly plan! save yourself some money and get AGILE messanger. Its free and is exactly like AIM on the sk2. It even has some extra features not included with the sk2. I have had it for 2 weeks now and works great..Sometimes it gets annoying because it still has a few bugs. Still worth it though.

agile messenger is pretty good, I don't use AOL anything ( boycott their company - they charge u too much money for service that's almost free on internet - all it is a GUI and that's all, plus when u try and cancel it takes verification of the alphabets backwards and who yo great,great,great,great grandaddy had an affair with, and then they still beg u to keep it )

Hey...I joined this site a LONG TIME AGO before I had the MDA. I was considering getting the I730 but never did. BUT im here now and I have had the MDA for 2 weeks. Its great...I havent found anything I dont like about it. Ive installed a few things and they work great (flash player, pocket nester, magic button). I wanted to ask what other applications you have installed and you use and like the most? I have been looking around for the past couple days trying to catch up, but if people could do this with links to where they got it it would be a huge help. Im gonna be getting a 2GB soon so ill have nothing to worry about when dloading

I have had no problems with Agile on my phone, only problems with AIM. MSN connects flawlessly everytime. AOL tries to get me for "turboing" and all this other BS.

I can chat all day long and send image flawlessly on my Agile as long as I get signal/service from Tmobile where I am at.

p.s. I forgot I had an sk2, what is that again? Some kinda phone that a lot of people like? lol.

I hate to take this off-topic, but have you found any way of getting the MyFaves interface onto the MDA? Someone mentioned ripping a dialer, and putting the icons on the desktop, but the thread has died.

We've been trying to get that on the home screen of the MDA, and somebody mentioned somewhere you could rip some dialer from another ppc, and you could get the same type of thing on the MDA.

..Okies .. I heard about it but never used it ..... Wonder if they will send you an udate for your phone .. Have you asked before we start playing with new modds ???? Cant hurt to ask for a download if not I believe the program is in the dash we can extract it ....

There are rumors T-Mobile will have an update for the MDA for the myFaves interface, but it's a longshot. The Dash thing I had heard about too, I don't think anybody with the Dash is interested in sharing the ROM's though

Guess what commerical just came on now? A T-Mobile myFaves one

Well hopefully 1 of the shops I do work for will have the dash . ,. If they di ill download the rom ... Then I can share the rom out and hopefully someone can get the MyFaves extracted ...... Have to see if I dont have to upgrade my contract toadd it ... Not signing for another year just for a feature ....
