Can someone who has gotten the MDA tell me if it has Voice Commander on it or a Voice software that uses voice tags?

Don't know how you got your Google Local to work, I am having ZERO success getting it installed. Almost debating returning it and sticking with my 7100t.

He has not responded since yesterday. I think he may have been running the online version, not local.

Wow, so I take the weekend off of looking at this thread and 9 pages go by. Anyway, glad that some of you have finally gotten your devices. I saw some questions and I'll try to answer if I can.

In reference to push e-mail and an Exchange server. Unfortunately, judging by the ROM currently installed (thanks tmojay), full push functionality isn't available. However, if yuor company is running Exchange 2003 with SP2 installed you can get partial push. Since there is no true how to guide since each situation is very unique, I highly recommend you go to the Pocket PC forum. There is a sitcky there entitile Quintessential Guide to Exchange and Windows Mobile connectivity or somthing to that. In there you should find everything you need.

tippymn: The built in voice software does utilize voice tags. For this reason I purchased Microsoft Voice Command which is a true voice recognition program, works great for what it is and with a small hack it functions with your BT headset.

tmojay I believe when you are in the messaging app, select the text message folder, then hit menu >>> tools >>> options, highlight text messages in the window and an options menu will appear. There you should be able to uncheck delivery notifications for your text messages. As for sounds for new message, go to start >>> settings >>> personal >>> Sound and Notifications, there yuo can make the adjustment.

As for making adjustments to the Registry, I like Resco Registry Editor, it is an add-on tot he Resco File Explorer, I posted a link to it on page 1,2 or 3.

Cheers,

Alex

Can you run Java apps? It appears that the MDA is missing MIDLet manager, cannot run Google Local etc, etc, etc. Is their a thrid party app to support ALL JAVA .jads, .jars etc?

Posted by: deemota

I have been on hold with tech support now for over an hour. My internet isnt working on my MDA. They cant figure it out. I'll keep you posted. Anyone else have this problem?

Posted by: hawee

how much is everyone getting their mda for?

i got these prices from tmobile
no contract - 479
1 yr renew - 349.99
2 yr renew - 299.99
for upgrades

Posted by: Alex301

mmeyer4663: I wish I could be more help regarding the Java functionality however I am running the Qtek ROM on my device and yes I have the Midlet Manager and Java capabilities.

deemota: What are your GPRS setting now?

I bought my UK MDA Vario for $520US

wap.voicestream.com
and something about CHAP authentication

Posted by: hawee

is the O2 mini S the same thing as the mda vario? does it not have aim msn?

Posted by: Alex301

deemota: Actually before you answer try this configuration and see if it works, it is what I am running:

Start >> Settings >> Connections >> Connections >> Advanced >> Select Networks

In both drop down menus select My ISP then hit OK. Go back to the Tasks Tab it should read My ISP only now. Continue with Add New Conenction.

Name: T-Mobile US (Whatever you would like)
select modem: Cellular (GPRS)
Access Point: internet3.voicestram.com (if you have VPN)
internet2.voicestream.com (w/o VPN)
Username/password/domain: blank

Under the advanced tab everything should be set to "Use server-assigned IP address.

Hope this gets you up and running.

Posted by: Alex301

hawee: Yes, the O2 Mini S and the MDA are the same device in terms of hardware, however the O2 comes with all the customizations from O2, which unfortunatley does not include an AIM application. I tried their ROM some time ago and I thought T-Mo put a bunch of crap in terms of customizations, O2 takes the cake. But that is my preference, if you like Today screen plugins like Pocket Breeze, O2 comes with one that is pretty nice, but bogs down the system.

i just got my mda today, and have a few questions.

1. is it possible to use email withouth signing up for tzones, just through wifi connections?
2. what free AIM clients are out ther?
3. what are advantages of flashing wiht a new rom?

thanks

Posted by: Alex301

true atlantis: Here we go,

1) the short answer is yes.
2) IM+ or Agile Messenger, I forget which one is free.
3) As of right now, the T-Mo US ROM is the newest one out there, although I don't kow what Radio version it is yet. But in short there would be no reason to reflash the device now with the exception of removing all the customizations the T-Mo throws into their extended ROM. I am the latter and that is why I use the Qtek ROMs since they are close as you can get to an untouched device. Also to flash your MDA with a ROM from another company you will need to CID unlock the device.

Alex

On a different note, I am sure there is something work related I should be doing, but I always suffer from motivational issues after long weekends.

Thanks man. Worked perfectly. How can't tech support know these settings? That's crazy. Will I get EDGE with these settings?

Posted by: HoOn

Okay, I just came back from lunch and bought th MDA. woohooo! Finally! I havent had time to play around with it so I'll see what happens. I'm not sure if I can see if T-zones work because I have the $19.99 Internet add-on already. I'll have to use someone else's SIM card.

If Edge is available in your area you will be good to go.

Thanks Alex, don't want to mess with voice tags will be buying the Voice Commander....I have waited sooooo long for this thing. I already have everything ordered for this thing. Mini SD Memory card 1gb $39 after $20 rebate, bluetooth headset, case, now to just wait for the UPS truck to come.....they say patience is a virture, guess I'm not virturous!!
My boss is soooo hoping mine comes before he gets his 8125, he 'thinks' I'm gonna mod his.....I don't get paid that much!!

Posted by: ShooBaDoop

Tip and/or trick needed:

I just bought the MDA. I've been waiting for it for several months. Anyway, as I entered in my Contacts, I noticed that I had to keep the "blue dot" pushed down to enter numbers and symbols. However, I must have hit some weird sequence of keys because I now of something like "num lock" on and can't remember what I hit. Anyone know how to turn "num lock" on and off? I've tried several key sequences concerning the blue dot, Cap/Shift & Sym/Space with no luck.

And, yes, I flipped through the manual but I don't see anything concerning the qwerty keyboard.

Thanks.

ok, i figured out how to do the email, you jsut have to add the accout, not click the button on the home screen that says 'configure my email now' or something to that extent.

agile is the free messenger

one other question, if i have added an email account, how do i remove that whole accout. i messed up the first time adding, and i want that account gone... and, how much can you have open at a time, my whole MDA is going really slow, and i have 3 email accounts, and agile running... how can i close programs instead of min them?

there is a sim card manager somewhere in programs where you can select all and delete the contacts. NOTE: this will delete them from the sim card and you WONT BE ABLE TO GET THEM BACK

Posted by: Alex301

ShooBaDoop: Double press the blue key, that toggles it.

true atlantis: In outlook, go menu >> tools >> options. Using the stylus select and hold on the account you want to delete. A pop up will come with that option.

ckbook30: I didn't have any sime contacts to start with, however a search in the Pocket PC forum might yield some results for you, I remember a thread discussing that, it was either in the Pocket PC or at xda-developers.com.

Can any one confirm if the MDA supports Java or not? If it does, will be heading out this evening to get one.

Yes you will need a registry editor to get the E icon. I think there might be a .cab file roaming around that does it for you, but I wouldn't even know where to point you for that. I would suggest the Reg Editor since it is always nice to have.

Posted by: tgenius

Alex.. I installed Total Commander to get a Reg Editor..but can't for the life of me figure out how to actually add a key once I get to the folder.. any idea?

Posted by: Alex301

tgenius: Bare with me since I am not familiar with Total Commander, I used it briefly to edit my Ext ROM but that was all, I think Resco has a better interface. In regards to the E icon, you should have to add any keys, since it should already be there. Here is the path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL

You should have a key in there title "EnableDifferGprsEdge"

Change the DWORD from 0 to 1, then soft reset.

I got my MDA today but am having a few problems

1. I can sucessfully connect to my home Wi-Fi and everything works fine. Then after a few mins of surfing, and i go to another website, it says "locating" and it will just stay there until it says that it cannot find the website. After that, anywhere i go, the same thing happens. The only way to fix this is to turn off Wi-Fi and turn it back on. Any ideas on this?

2. While visiting my myspace profile, the MDA gets extreamly slow, so slow that its as if it is froze, i cannot exit IE or anything. It would take me ages to close it. Only way to restore it is to do a soft reset. Is this happening to anyone else? Is it maybe because I have a video on my profile? I don't see why this would be a problem if it can stream videos right?

3. If i go to a link that has a video on ex: www.123.com/123.wmv, i don't get a video at all. After a while, i only get a bunch of giberish. Is this normal or not? Any idea on how to fix this?

Well I think that is all for now. I dont think I am having any other problems at the moment but i do have a question about getting a program. Is there a free browser alternative out there that would load a webpage as it normally appears. I want to have to scroll sideways instead of having it all verticle, the way that IE makes it.

Well that is all for now. Thanks

Not that I was able to find playing with the phone in the store. MDA did not launch .jar(d) file loaded from Google /GLM for local.

myspace will sometimes lock up my 1.67Ghz Powerbook

its probably the content on the page, and IIRC the MDA only has 200Mhz proc in it and limited RAM. So i'd just steer clear of navigating myspace on it.

Alex..works like a champ.... this may sound like a dumb question, but is there a quickie util to select between edge and wifi when both are available?

Also..concerning the exchange issue.. does EACH message received generate an SMS message or only when you do a send receive? I want to know whats the best route to do as my plan has a 500SMS bucket grandfathered in..but I don't want to overdo it.

Posted by: OwensStr8Clowni

Just tried calling Customer Care for help with Internet on my MDA and they just told me to wait 48 hours for the internet to come on it might be b4 but URGH i hate waiting can someone help me out

Posted by: Alex301

Another issue you might have with myspace is formating for PIE. I have hacks in place to so PIE mimics IE6.0 plus I don't cache websites to improve speed. I was just able to log in and navigate myspace, but I don't have any video running in there.

I just ordered a Screen Protector for the Wizard MDA, can someone please help me with how I can put some of these programs onto my phone

Posted by: Alex301

tgenius: There are no utlilies that I know off for quick switches between GPRS and wi-fi, but searching the Pocket PC or xda-developers might yield some results. As for exchange and sms; how is your exchange mail pushing to your device, is it via AES?

I guess that's gonna apply to me as well.

I forgot to mention about my internet plan, its the $19.99 one that everyone said they couldn't get but, and here's where it gets complicated, the only reason I got it at that rate was because there was no other data plan available for me...I think it was due to the smart access thing and I had to turn down a plan and get the basic plan, I hope this works!
One more thing, the rep asured me that the instant messages were charged as data and not txt messages...I will be calling CC to verify/confirm this.

Posted by: Blak

Alex,

Can you share those hacks? Where did you get a screen protector?
Thanks

I am the Exchange Admin, so I installed SP2 for 2003 which allows the "push" to the WM5 handhelds..but since the AG pack isn't out yet... doesn't it send it via an sms when new mail comes?

Posted by: Alex301

Blak: The hacks in place for internet explorer are done through a program called Tweaks2k, find the link I posted on page 2 or something of this thread. It is about $12 and well worth it in my opinion. Aside from the IE stuff it has many other hacks that it puts in place for you and you don't have to run around in the registry risking mucking things up.

As for the screen protectors I bought mine from Boxwave.com. I use the Clear touch Anti-Glare. Been in use for 3 months now and I am not even considering replacement, holds up real well, no scratchs in the protector yet.

tgenius: I wish I had exchange 2003. Anyway, you may want to double check this in the Quintissential Guide to Exchange and Windows Mobile Connectivity sticky in the Pocket PC forum, but I believe if you are connected via an AES, you can set the device to sync at intervals, once the AKU2.0 update comes through then you will have push, but I don't believe it utilized SMS trigers since it is a GPRS sync with your exchange.

Alex,

Thanks for the quick reply. What kind of case do you have on your device (if any)? I'm looking for a glove type fitting however not sure if that's possible with the keyboard. I'm looking for something like this: http://boxwave.com/products/flexisk...mda-pro_725.htm
Thanks

Posted by: ShooBaDoop

AlexSoCal,

I believe you had previously posted in another forum (the one that's 95+ pages, I think) about the settings to use to get GMail pushed to a pocket pc device....would you mind reposting that here in the Tips & Tricks thread?

I did a search but it's not finding the one I'm looking for.

Thanks.

Posted by: Alex301

dom89: See my post above to Blak regarding Tweaks2k.

ShooBaDoop: I used Gmail on my MDA a while back when I first got it, but since I don't use Gmail regularly I haven't been keeping it on there as I have upgraded the ROM. However this thread should help you get up and running.

Gmail Config

Posted by: Alex301

Blak: You said it, the slide out keyboard makes it difficult to find slip on covers. Additionally, the leather, plastic, or metal ones that do allow for the keyboard to open just make the device bulkier. I used the case that came with device for a while, and I believe that is the best route to go, something that allows you to easily slide it out when needed. But then again I have read about people droping the device while trying to get it out of the case, and I have to admit it has almost happened to me on occasion. Right now I don't use anything but the screen guard. Just keep it in my pant or coat pocket.

Dude! On the 11th page I believe, you claimed that Google Local works. WHERE did you get it and how is it working on you phone and NOT mine?!?!

Posted by: kdenninger

Ok guys, I have an MDA (and also an SDA) and here's my commentary so far on the MDA.

THIS THING IS BUGGIER THAN A FREAKING ROACH MOTEL!

Now, that's the NICE way of putting it.

I managed to KILL it by simply voicedialing off a bluetooth headset! As in the unit spontaneously RESET!

The Java machine is NOT in the ROM. It simply is NOT THERE. Period. I am going to try to graft it in from the SDA, but that may or may not work. Without it forget about Google Local or any other Java Midlet working!

I've had to HARD reset it once already, which really pisses me off, because I had some customizations in there (History and such on the SD card instead of storage memory, etc) and of course now they're gone. Back to fix THOSE.

Oh, and it removes CABs when you execute them off the SD card. The SDA does not. That's REAL nice - NOT.

The SDA has a few bugs and needs a reset every couple of days, but the MDA is a roach motel. Pure and simple. I'm not going to say its going back YET, but its looking that way on this one - the SDA looks like the FAR more solid device.

I also think its the more usable one thus far. We'll see how I feel in a couple of days - but so far, I'm NOT impressed with the MDA at all - except for the keyboard, which is kinda nice to have.

Agree with above me. Maybe my expectations were set too high.

Anyone have a 100% confirmation on T-Zones $4.99 plan working or not working?

I have it, and at times have got a GPRS "connected" message, but was never able to pull up a web page. I've tried so many settings in "Connection", that I don't know what even got me to that point now.

Everyone that I've spoken to at T-Mobile (in the store and one the phone) don't really know jack about the phone and just want to sell me the $29 dollar package to fix my problem.

I don't really need HotSpots right now, just solid web access. Tethering my notebook over bluetooth would be nice. Any suggestions? Should I try to get the $19.99 plan?

Posted by: kdenninger

I've got no problem with tethering or internal data access on the $19.95 plan.

Posted by: frostproof

myspace is very heavy, bumpy web site. It even runs bad often in normal web browsers. So that's not going to help you on the MDA.

The onyl way for Myspace to run better is if the makers of the MySpace site build that actual web site better.

Posted by: frostproof

Thanks for the reply dom89.

Anyone had any success with the $4.99-$5.99 t-zones?

Posted by: frostproof

I'm probably going to have to fight tooth and nail just to get the $19.99 plan. From what I was told by t-Mo today, those plans "no longer exist".

Posted by: Alex301

Owen: Since you don't have a storage card (you shoudl go out and get one), then put the mp3 file you want as a ringtone in the folder: windows/rings

Ultra: I don't believe you can remove the bar at the bottom of the screen with the keyboard icon, however in IE you can go to full screen if that is what you are getting at. As for settings to improve PIE, not really without getting into the registry and playing around. See my earlier post to Blak in regards to Tweaks2k if you would like an easy way to improve that.

kdenninger: Sorry to hear about the soft reset with the voice dial. I didn't play much with the built in program since I never heard a good thing about it and went straight for Voice Command instead.

You are correct about the Java Applet, as people have mentioned this, T-Mo screwed the pooch with this one.

As for the .cab file removal, I don't understand why you would want to keep the file on the card? I only reinstall software after a hard reset, which I rarely do.

All and all I am sorry to hear that this ROM is so buggy for you, I would suggest you maybe try a ROM by Qtek or I-mate as these don't have all the limitations that T-Mobile is apparently putting into these devices.

Cheers,

Alex

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL

You should have a key in there title "EnableDifferGprsEdge"

Change the DWORD from 0 to 1, then soft reset.

So does doing this enable EDGE or just the "E" icon, ie EDGE is already enabled but the E icon doesnt show.

tedya: Edge is already enabled, this jsut gives you the E icon.

Anyone have an answer to this? I just ordered a Cingular 8125 trying to switch carriers but now I'm having second thoughts. To get EDGE through T-zones only requires a simple change in the connection settings/proxies?

My T-Zones works fine with my MDA. Look at the offical thread and see others have it working too. You need to do the proxy settings on it. Posted over and over again in the huge thread or just google for how to tether a phone to laptop on bt. the settings will work, but ports will depend on your location. some have fully open, but mine are somewhat disabled here in nor cal.

Google local also works for me, but not sat maps. cant get e-mail to work thorugh outlook, but web access works.

Now i just gotta find a decent browser as IE is pretty bad.

Posted by: ronin4740

Guys,

This may be a duplicate question but I don't have the time at the moment to search through the entire thread for the answer and hope you'll forgive me for asking it...

Is there any way to get the terminal services client application to connect to a non-standard tcp port? I've tried <server address>:<port> and <server address> <port> but both tell me that this is an invalid address.

I need to be able to do this to as several of the RDP connections I use for work use non-standard port settings.

If I can't do it with the builtin application can someone suggest an application which will let me do this?

TIA

Thanks. It's hard to browse through 100 pages just to find a little bit of information.

yeah, but on the other hand you can just google it and it comes up right away. however, i find that if you had looked through the 100 page thread a lot of questions are answered towards the end (last 10-20 pages), no need to read all the ones before it was released.

it takes trial and error to get it right. i am still playing around with mine to see what is the best setting.

good luck

How did you get Google Local to work?

Would anyone care to post the specific URL?

I'm sure that someone is going to come through here with the exact same question, and it couldn't hurt. Thanks for your tips.

I am in NYC and can confirm that my t-zones plan works fine with my MDA as well.
By default, the APN is wap.voicestream.com and I have no problem browsing.
I created a new connection and added the proxy and it's all good.

Maybe a dumb question, but this make it so it toggles back and forth between the G and the E depending on whether you are in a GPRS or EDGE area, or does the E just stay on no matter what?

did put it through extensive testing yet as I was just playing around to see what happens. will try it out more and let you know what i find. my battery is going fast as i have been playing with it all day and i have to conserve a bit since i will be without a power source til later tonight.

local.google.com is not the same thing.

They're talking about www.google.com/glm

This DOES NOT WORK on the MDA as T-Mobile ripped the Java Virtual Machine out of the unit! Without it you CANNOT run the MIDLET.

Posted by: metalzo

So has anyone gotten Java to work on it? Is there a way to just add it without using a totally different ROM? Let me know thanks!

ah... my bad. yeah i never tried the glm, however i had it on other phones of mine and wasnt too impressed since the app was very buggy. hopefully tmobile will put java virtual machine back into this somehow, but oh well i can live without glm.

Posted by: kdenninger

Its NOT buggy on the SDA, and works GREAT!

It sucks a big wiener that the JVM is missing off the MDA, since that immediately kills ANY Java application - not just GLM.

Posted by: metalzo

Alex,

With regards to Tweaks2K, does it allow you to pick and choose which hacks to turn on and off? From the website there appear to be a ton of hacks some of which I'm sure I don't need especially if they might slow down the MDA or otherwise effect the performance. Are there any free alternatives?

Also, I like the sound of Resco Explorer but I can't really justify paying for it when Total Commander PPC is available as freeware with the same functionality (granted an inferior interface). Does Resco have some added functionality outside the interface on top of Total Commander? Because if it does then perhaps I can see purchasing it. Thanks you've been extremely helpful.

Posted by: Alex301

tedya: In theory it should toggle back and forth between the two G and E, since I have yet to leave and Edge area I can't verify if it does that.

Just bought my MDA today.First time Active Sync user-already in big trouble. After installing Active Sync 4.1 to my PC (Win XP SP2) i tried to connect my MDA via USB.As soon as Active Sync tries to establish connection with MDA,my PC crashes and restarts.Any ideas?

Posted by: Alex301

metalzo: In Tweaks2k, you do choose which hacks to use or not, you just go through all the menus and tabs and place or remove check marks. There are also question marks next to each hack that will give you a more detailed description of what each does. In terms of Resco, I have yet to pay for it, I believe I downloaded the trial Explorer with the Reg edit add it. Been a couple of months now and hasn't stoped working.

Cheers,

Alex

edit: I jsut took a look at the site, you haev two options purchase and download, select download and then download the .cab file. put it on you device and run it from there.

They are probably going to come after me now.

Posted by: AlphaShark

OK, I have read several threads and can not seem to get the wap.myvoicestream.com to work on the MDA.

I need a big favor.

Can someone post a tutorial on how to do this on the MDA? I see numerous posts on the SDA but the OS is different on the MDA as you all know.

Another question:

Does anyone know a good mobile movie showtime and theater site like the one on T-zones?

TIA

I did some searching and got the suggestion to try turning off all firewalls (I have Zone Alarm Basic.) Even though I was using the USB (why would a firewall have anything to do with that?) turning off the firewall worked. Just remember to turn it back on again when you are done synching.

Great phone!

Ha! Just found out why I couldn't get Google Local to install, having my PIE mimic IE6.0 it didn't see me as being on a PPC. So I downloaded it, and it seems to work fine...not set up though for use with w touchscreen nor can I get Sat images.

Oh yeah and my MDA is struggling to close out of it. Not sure I will keep this one going

also someone please explain how to put MP3 ringers PLEASE

Posted by: Alex301

Owen: Here you go, this is for you since you don't have a miniSD yet:

1) Establish an ActiveSync connection with your PC
2) On your PC: Start >> My Computer >> Mobile Device >> My Windows Mobile-Based Device >> Windows >> Rings
3) Copy mp3 of choice into the folder in step 2
4) On your device: Start >> Settings >> Personal >> Sound & Notifications > Notifications
5) Event Drop Down: Phone: Incomming Call
6) Ring Tone: Select mp3

*For those of you that have a storage card, you can place the mp3 in the root file of your storage card and follow the other steps.

Cheers,

Alex

Lots of ROMS here: ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/HTC_Wizard/

is there anyway to sync this with my powerbook via bluetooth?

Posted by: alfer

there was some mention of the SDA having a problem where when rf signal is lost, it can take a minute or two of "Searching..." to regain signal. I have also experienced this on my SMT5600. Does the MDA suffer from the same problem? kdenn, i believe you may have commented on this issue.

While we're on the topic, how does the overall RF strength compare between the SDA and MDA?

Posted by: kdenninger

I've seen no problems with the "Searching" thing with EITHER.

The MDA's RF is nowhere near the SDA's. Its "ok", but just "ok." The SDA is outstanding.

If RF is important, buy the SDA.

Alrightee Jargan, I'll dedicate some time to trying to help you, as my setup went flawless and I am discovering some cool things to do with this phone. I don't think you should have to return it just because it won't sync. First off, I need a detailed description of what you've done to try to solve the problem.

I have installed and reinstalled the software 2 times. Restarted both the MDA and computer many times. I'm going to install it on my laptop and see what it does. I have done active sync, and different pads many times and have never had this problem. my HP 6315 never had this problem.

Jargan04:
I think what may have happened is the device driver for the MDA was f***ed up during device recognition. One way I know of fixing this would be to make sure ActiveSync is CLOSED. I can't stress this enough, make sure the task is ENDED. After it is closed on your PC, connect the MDA to your PC with the USB. Make sure it makes the standard "Dong-ding" noise when a USB device is connected. Next, right click on my computer->properties->hardware tab->device manager. Find the sub-category where the MDA is listed, and right click on the device...click properties. Click on the device driver tab, and click update driver. Make sure you search for the appropriate driver yourself, and select your CD drive as the location to search with the CD in the drive. Let me know if this works, and we'll go from there.

Posted by: jlj3394

Alright, I just talked to Tmobile for about an hour. I've been a customer since 01, so I had some leverage.

I started by pointing them to the Cingular 8125 available here:
http://www.benefitdiscount.com/nextjump/

I then told them that I didn't expect to get that price since it was a 3rd party but they needed to get close to keep me.

After some negotiations, she came up with a $239.99 figure with no rebates, free shipping (which I think is standard). I told her she would have to sweeten the pot.

So she came back with one free month of service. I told her 3. We settled on two. So my price basically came out to:
239.99
-39.99
-39.99
----------
$159.xx

Just wanted to let everyone know what they can get if they're persistant.

She also allowed me to keep my $9.99/month TZones access which I currently use on my A630 to get email (corporate and private). I don't really need INternet access on the phone, at least not if it is $30/month. So I'm going to see if I can still get emails with the $10 plan. She basically told me I'd be able to "work around it" after 2 other reps and a techie had told me it was impossible. I will soon be searching to see how to use TZones Pro to get emails and possibly get internet access.

It's a bug in the WiForums software that runs the mobile forums. It has bugged me to no end and it affects every forum that uses WiForums software. The WiForums software tries to detect the capabilities of the browser you use and fails miserably on Pocket IE for some reason.

not exactly 100% sure what you are asking, but you would have to leave it on all the time (this will quickly drain your battery).

you can set what access point you want to use i think. then just take off all the phone connection and it should only work with wifi. i think you can use wifi and take a call at the same time

A couple things:

Is your phone COMPLETELY power-depleted? If so, it needs to have the battery removed for 10-15 seconds, then you need to plug it into WALL POWER.

If you are using the USB sync cable to charge, your PC's USB ports need to be powered ports with enough juice to charge a phone. Some PC's don't have USB that has that amount of juice.

have you tried using another wall outlet? i have some outlets in my house that you need to flip the switch on the wall to be able to give power to those outlets. you're not on one of those, are you?

Not sure why this would be, I would go to your local T-Mo corporate store and ask to use their charger for a test. It sounds to me like your charger might be faulty. If your MDA is recognizing the USB cable as a charger and drawing charging power from it, it should not be able to differentiate between that power and the power supplied by the wall charger. There must be a defect somewhere in the wall charger.

go to START->SETTINGS->SOUNDS & NOTIFICATIONS->NOTIFICATIONS

there is a drop-down menu for the event. it would be one of those events. there are several messaging events and i'm not sure which one is which. anyway, you can change the sound and other things there.

good luck!

This freeware is amazing and so useful on the MDA:

(need to register to download it) but it's really worth it.
It closes any apps by holding the right softkey ... really cool !!

The reception on the MDA is truly horrible. I'm basically getting no signal at all 80% - 90% of the time at home. I usually can hold 2 to 3 bars on my Moto V300 and V551. The SDA was pretty good at holding a signal too although a few times it didn't have signal at all in a high signal area. I thought the RAZR was the worst at reception but I guess I was wrong.

Anyway, are there any suggestions on improving the reception? Anyone tried Wireless Extender repeater with the MDA? http://www.wirelessextenders.com/ce...al-booster.html

I was wondering if anybody knew of a specific screen protector i had once for my ipaq 1900. Its a screen protector thats a piece of thin plastic, but without any glue on it. It basically slides under the edges of the metal rim around the screen and stays in place like that. I really liked that protector because it was very durable and did not attract scratches very easily. Does anybody know what kind this is, and where to get it?? Thanks

Can someone post a tutorial on how to do this on the MDA? I see numerous posts on the SDA but the OS is different on the MDA as you all know.

Another question:

Does anyone know a good mobile movie showtime and theater site like the one on T-zones?

Make sure it makes the standard "Dong-ding" noise when a USB device is connected. Next, right click on my computer->properties->hardware tab->device manager. Find the sub-category where the MDA is listed, and right click on the device...click properties. Click on the device driver tab, and click update driver. Make sure you search for the appropriate driver yourself, and select your CD drive as the location to search with the CD in the drive. Let me know if this works, and we'll go from there.

It wont take a different drive. I installed it on my laptop and it works perfect. I had 3.8 on the laptop for my 6315, took it off. Installed 4.1 and it works great. Desktop is still not working right, after reinstalling it 2 more times.

The Pocket PC version of WiForums PIE AHM has not yet been developed but will be available in the upcoming days. However, I have enclosed information on how you can manually modify Pocket IE so that you can access HFME in WML mode:

----------------------------------

Download and install the PHM Registry Editor for Pocket PC (http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/RegEdit/).

1) Close/End the Pocket Internet Explorer process.

2) Using PHM Registry editor access the below registry key:

One question for those that have the MDA:
What is the AIM app like? And what features does it have and/or what features is it missing? Can you check away messages? Buddy Icons? etc...

I have unlimited texting so the main reason I want to get the MDA is for the QWERTY keyboard for AIM, Emails and texting. SKII won't work for me because I need to be able to stream audio, which WM5.0 handles with ease.
Thanks!

Hi all,
Trying to get my MDA to work with 4.99 T-zones, but I get the following error in PIE no matter what site I try to load: "This page contains errors and cannot be displayed."

Any thoughts? My settings are:
Under "Manage Existing Connections/Modem tab": T-mobile GPRS, cellular line (GPRS), access point wap.voicestream.com

Under Proxy Settings tab: Both checkboxes checked ("this network connects to the internet" and "this network uses a proxy server to connect to the internet"

Under "Advanced settigns" within the "Proxy Settings" tab: HTTP proxy 216.155.165.50:8080

And, possibly a related problem: when I try to check my email in Outlook, I get the error: "You must subscribe to t-zones in order to use this feature." But I do have t-zones, so I'm not sure what's up there.

Any thoughts? I've been trying to get this to work for hours, so any help is appreciated. It worked fine on my Treo 600.

Thanks!

Also,
Proporta also has a great scree protector that is sy on and literally invisible once place, but it is adhesive backed. I just used one on my 2125 and my TREO 650 so it is kinda fresh in my mind. The jkey with any screen saver is CLEAN HANDS, wash 'em up good. Then you clean the screen using their included screen cloth, NO LIQUID CLEANER, and then peel the back a slight bit applying at the top, smoothing down with the enclosed smoothing card and JOILA, installed. Work out any Airbubbles with the soothing card and you have one nice screen saver. I was really, really impressed. These are resuseable and washable. Also look at their Alu Leather Case for the MDA as well as their Silicon case. I recommend Proporta they have really always sent me great product in the past. They had sent me a discount code at XMAS time which was 10% Off Hardware palmplah10 and is entered at check out. I don't know if still good, but try it.

I have also used JAVOEDGE and they work well.

I like the NuShield which fits the OP's description perfecly

Other brands you hear alot about. Martin Fields. Brando, Belkin, Fellowes,

Not sure I want to wait until "someday" I have a reg editor that works with the SDA/MDA but has to be ActiveSynched. I recognize this Registry Editors name and would like to get it. ok hopefully someone can help me out here. i don't remember where, but i somehow have linked my pop gmail account to text messages on my mda. i keep getting text messages whenever i get an email into my gmail account. i even did a reset to factory defaults...and it still happens! where can i delete these gmail settings? it's listed with a star next to "text messages" in my accounts options...and i can't delete it! someone please help...thanks!

I am searching for the answer, but in the mean time...

I just set up my POP account.

Now it says "Checking ___ of 2109 headers"

How do I bypass this? I just want to start fresh and get the latest messages...None of my old ones. Thanks!

Posted by: moschops

Did anyone get their "Modem Link" working for tethering? I followed various instructions elsewhere for the HTC USB modem but after dialing I get various errors (like 692). Yes I did deactivate my Active Sync connection.

I suspect the main problem is that when I start Modem Link and select USB as the connection it style lists below "wap.voicestream.com" as the APN which is odd because elsewhere I have it set to internet2.voicestream.com for the T-Mobile GPRS connection. I appear to have no way to edit that value and my attempt to force it from the computer side via extra initialization params didn't work.

Is this something I have to hack on the registry to fix?

So far I've been rather disappointed with my MDA - in terms of usability it leaves a lot to be desired.

BTW I did find a much better manual than the one that came with my device - its on the T-Mo support page for the MDA: http://support.t-mobile.com/knowbas....SERVICE=Manual

But nothing about thethering and "Modem Link" :-(

Posted by: moschops

Well I tried one last thing for tethering before heading to bed (and I really was going to be asleep by 1am until I managed to completely crash the MDA and have to do a hard-reset... doh!)

Following the instructions from:

http://en.pdamobiz.com/en/forum/for...D=25&PN=1&TPN=1

I found I didn't quite have the modem init string right, the magic value was

AT+CGDCONT=1,"ip","internet2.voicestream.com"

with the number to dial being *99# (no user name or password of course).

Finally you MUST ensure that the WiFi is disconnected or you'll never get a connection via GPRS -but if you have WiFi why are you using GPRS??? Just so happened at home I have both while I was testing so it didn't work.

After all that I get a connection no problem - I have Edge connectivity in Oakland, CA - Broadband reports clocked my connection at 138/39kbps - not bad at all.

One one remaining BIG issue with the MDA that is making me MAD - the removal of Java from the phone. Doh!!! I want my Google Local!

Posted by: dadik

I think I read somewhere on the forum that since the MDA uses a mini USB to connect and charge through your computer, you could potentially use other usb-charging cords on the MDA. For example, my wife has a 7100t (with car charger and wall charger)...does anyone have the electrical specs on the MDA as compared with the Blackberry 7100t? Could all of the 7100t chargers be used on the MDA? Don't wanna buy the thing and try her car charger just to find that it fried the thing....

Posted by: mmeyer4663

Just want to remind EVERYONE to take the time, if you have not done so already, to submit issues to T-Mobile via the contact us website. We may not get immediate respomses but at least they will have multiple records of all of the problems being experienced with the device.

Have a look at this article on my HTC Wizard Blog. You'll find a program called Registry Wizard there, developed by one of the people from the XDA Developers forum. It allows you to choose from a bunch of registry tweaks that will speed up your device, enable wifi 802.11g and more nice stuff. Most of these tweaks are explained in seperate posts on the blog, and you'll find several tweaks that are not built into Registry Wizard yet. Have a look at the archive or use the search function on the blog.

Hey guys,

Looks like I have a problem with google local - not the midlet version as I know that's not going to work (for now), but the web-based version. I can get to google.com/xhtml just fine, but if I try to do any searches from there, I get the following error:

The Page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost. Check the connection and try again later.

I was not getting this error in my old phone (Nokia 6620). I have been on the $19.99 internet2 plan for a few years now.

Most of the other pages work fine for me. http://oa.wap.yahoo.com works beautifully, but I would prefer the more natural searches of google.

Does anybody have problems with google local that is on the $19.99 plan? I do not have it setup to go thru the proxy at this time.

Thanks for the help.

Posted by: kdenninger

I managed to graft in the Java files BUT it refuses to load GLM - it appears that there are registry entries missing.

If I get it sorted between myself and the XDA-developer folks there'll be something in the wiki over there on fixing this. In the meantime if you like Java apps THE MDA IS USELESS!

Give this a shot. Might be the old MTU setting issue.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...trysettings.asp
The MTU registry setting is about 2/3 of the way down.
Let us know if it works. I have not gotten my MDA yet or I would try it.

I disabled this feature by going into my .... well, heck. Now I can't find it!!

Essentially I found a screen that gave me three (click this dot and click OK) options (trying to remember): Dot 1. Setup a new account, Dot 2. ???, and Dot 3. Configure hot buttons (or something like that)

I believe under option 3 it allows you to turn off the text notification and activate the auto checking mechanism that will go in and retrieve your email every however many or so minutes. (does anyone know how to get it to check email on customizeable intervals or even it there are default settings that one can choose from? That is of course if I could find my way back to that screen!! )

If you can find this screen, that's how you do it. Sorry so vague. Mine is running the way you would like it to be and it's sooooo much better than getting text messages.

Also, for you guys using AIM...here's what I've noticed. I'm coming from the SK2 - much more quicker AIM application than what we have here with the MDA (and even the SDA). SK2 can spoil an individual as people can't tell whether you're on your SK2 or a regular computer when IM'ing. The MDA is much less consistent in terms of when you send messages (how quickly the person gets them) and when you receive messages (how quickly you recieve them). It does work, though. Just not up to the SK2 standard I'm used to.

As for comparing this device to the SDA (which I tortured for about 5 days while waiting for this phone to come out) the SDA is a nice phone, but again, coming from the SK2, it's QUERTY all the way. The teathering setup was easy and worked well on the SDA. The MDA is a bit trickier to setup (as seen in previous posts). The SDA is *much* more user friendly. Perhaps it's my intollerance to the PDA style, but things seem so backward to get to compared to the SDA.

My overall, I'm not sold on the MDA yet. The SDA could find its way back to me. It's small, powerful, and easier to work with than the MDA. The MDA simply is more appealing in the size of the screen and QUERTY keyboard.... IMHO.

Posted by: kaptainsunshine

I'd suggest ditching the pre-installed IM app and going with Agile Messenger ( http://www.agilemobile.com/ ) Doesn't use SMS and to me seems better all around.

There seems to be a number of people who are writing of frustrating experiences with the MDA. This has me second guessing whether or not I made the right decision to order one.

For those of you that already have the device, what are your overall impressions? Do you feel it is a cool device worth spending the time to tweak it properly? OR is it too buggy to even bother with and going back?

Details of your experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
vespa

by far the best device out right now with only a few tweaks needed. IMHO....

i tried installing some software on it and all of them say they are not a valid file or something like that.... is there a trick to installing software on this thing? I active sync is and transfer the setup file to one of the folders and click on it and then it gives me the crap about not a valid file etc. HELP
btw i am trying to install SPB Weather.

Posted by: shappy0869

Anyone tried this yet? http://www.mgmaps.com/download.php

Posted by: kdenninger

Most software is loaded via ActiveSync - you connect and then run the installer ON YOUR PC. It will load over the ActiveSync connection.

Exceptions are CAB files - those you put on the MDA and execute them directly.

the one for ppc2003 will work however the way you start the program (landscape or portrait) is the way the program will work, if you change the screen layout while the program is open you will see a black portion on the screen cutting off part of the viewing area which cant be fixed, but the program does work.

i always run the prog in landscape and then close the keyboard since i am going to have to type a response anyway once received.

Not sure if this has been posted before. For everyone looking for push email, T-Mobile provides their version of this service. Go to My T-Mobile online on your pc and setup the My Email section with your pop3 account. Then setup the alerts to alert you when any email comes in. i have been doing this since yesterday and it pushes all my gmail that come in right into my MDA inbox. Works awesome. Try it......

For those of you that already have the device, what are your overall impressions? Do you feel it is a cool device worth spending the time to tweak it properly? OR is it too buggy to even bother with and going back?

Details of your experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

I work for a Fortune 3 corporation.

But what's weird is, I dont embrace our technology for the sake of using our technology.

In the past, I've had the Treo 650 Palm. And most recently the Sidekick2.

I will say that the MDA compared to the Treo 650 Palm.... Palm shows that they are better at intuition. Things just make common sense. Functions, options, how to navigate, just make sense. The MDA requires a bit more time to know the ins and outs and sometimes leaves you wondering Why?

The SK2 is the ultimate real time communicator. The keyboard, the way you navigate you can do instinctively. It's simpler. It's got a much narrower scope for what you want to do. The Keyboard is by far the best out of all the PDAs out there. Even the rocker wheel without the ability to touch screen... you can do thinks swiftly.

But for business users, it's way too proprietary so i decided to give the mda a shot.

phone wise, the speaker isn't as loud as the treo or the sk2. the keyboard travel sux and the lack of number buttons really is a downer. There's only one alt type key whereas on the sk2 it's on both sides so you can use either thumb. The battery life seems to be all right, but then i have AOL on all the tim eand i will corroborate the other guy's point that AOl is not as well integrated into the MDA as it is on the SK2. The treo verichat was nice, but was by far the worst out of the three.

Overall, the jury's still out. i wish the MDA proved to be teh best of breed amalgamating the positives and eliminating the negatives of the SK2 and Treo Palm 650 in one solid package, but alas it is not.

the MDA is good, but good enough to be $400? nah.

Ok Magic Button rules, but how do I get it to start up automatically if I reset the device?

Thanks!
